N95-1 v21 Firmware review

I was just wondering what Nokia should include in the next firmware-release after v21 for the nokia n95-1. After I upgraded from v20 to v21 I had many expectations concerning the changelog (http://www.allaboutsymbian.com/forum/showthread.php?t=58226): Flashlite3, faster menu, rotation improvements...
however, here's a BIG, FAT buglist:
- Flashlite works fairly good with youtube although quality is worse than with mobitubia or emtube BUT other flashsites as myvideo.de or google video are terribly slow (50% speed, sound not properly synched) AND when resizing the page (to 75 or 50%) only the left quarter of a video is displayed
- opening menu folders hasn't become faster; only if folders have already been opened and therefore loaded into the RAM the menu seems faster
- rotation improvements are only noticeable when rotating the screen while displaying pictures or when having zoomed in. in all other situations screen rotation has become even slower (e.g. in the menu, or when having a full active standy with calendar and to do entries) AND when rotating the screen counterclockwise (e.g. with rotateme) there are loads of localization errors (e.g. OPTIONS and BACK are interchanged) and the camera viewfinder mirrors everything; in general, rotation is not very responsive
- and that's another annoying bug: the device has become less responsive (is this the revenge of the keypress bug??:tongue
- i'm getting the feeling that the e3 demo has a reduced framerate compared to v20
- "GPS position acquisition is *much* faster than in V20." - this is simply not true, it still takes around 2 or 3 minutes without A-GPS to lock my position
- if light sensor is set to minimum, the backlight sometimes is switched off even if I'm in a quite dark ambience (-> I can't see anything for approx. 10 seconds)
- sometimes WLAN-scanning just goes off involuntarily and, even if I switched it off, the phone displays all available networks
- standby-time improvements? i didn't realize any. I checked v20 with Nokias energy profiler (switched off everything possible, offline mode, no memory card inserted -> 0.06W) and then v21 (same process, again 0.06W)
- WLAN wizard has remained the same; if I want to choose e.g. my home wlan "ConnectionPoint" (secure) it is not always displayed in the access point list. then I choose "search for wlan" to find it; everything's alright, "ConnectionPoint" is found but when I choose it, I have to enter the WEP key - extremely annoying!!!
- a couple of bugs can be found in the music player. the responsibility of the media keys is considerably slow, it takes half a second to e.g. pause - I want it to pause immediately! And, if you push the keys several times in a row it stops the music only after your last push.
- the volume keys are not switched when changing to landscape mode; it means that when playing back a video you have to press the LEFT volume key while the volume bars rise in the RIGHT direction
- the browser is not fully developed; when rendering a website, the browser gives you a "first glance" at some parts of the page, but then there's a couple of seconds a white screen after which the browser renders the rest of the page. I don't get it, does the browser get the desktop resolution at first and then tries to allocate every object to the phones' resolution? Tell me.
- layer ads cannot be closed as they are wandering together with the mouse
- and lastly, when trying to watch flash vids not on youtube in landscape mode, the browser often crashes.
I don't think these bugs are related to my device only as there would be no logical reason for this (I mean NSU distributes the same firmware to everyone with n95-1 and I definitely don't have hardware-related issues)
Okay, enough about bugs. I would like to give my thoughts about what should be included in the next firmware-release:
- ASR (as seen on n95 8gb v20)
- everything should be supported by the 3d accelerator, esp. Flashlite 3 (it uses the CPU only), then video playback would work way better
- page file (no more memory leaks); I'd rather have a temporary slow reaction of the phone while it does memory-eating procedures like videoediting than "out-of-memory" popups
- there should be an expert's view option in the settings app to have access to more specific settings
- GPS data should be queried at least each half a second from the chip to have a smoother position tracking. it would also be more accurate, since there wouldn't be such large jumps from one position to another when driving really fast
- one should be able to switch WLAN completely off, not just the scanning; correct me if I'm wrong, but how can it be possible that even if WLAN is supposedly switched off, the scanning starts so incredibly fast? shouldn't there be a warmup phase of the antenna??
I hope you guys read it and provide me with answers and opinions!!!

I have recently installed v 21.0.016. A big concern is that I used to use the "GPS Data" application often, but this has now been removed!?
1) Any idea where I can find the GPS Data app to re-install?
2) If not available, which 3rd party apps could show me speed, elevation, coordinates etc?
As a comment the Maps application is IMHO not as feature rich. I used to be able to plan a route and then start tracking my position on the highlighted route as I progress - this is no longer possible
Thanks in advance for any insights

I used Sandisk 4GB SDHC card with my N95-1 V21.0.016, currently had all my mp3, MV,internet links, photos, wallpapers, software, & games all installed in this 4GB card except "Yahoo Go" in phone memory (as advised by Yahoo), my 4GB card available memory is around 890MB left with 2,989MB used for the above. i found out that original Nokia apllication like "WLAN" icon, "Dictionary" icon, "Search" icon already HIDE in phone ...coz when i go to assign shortcut item, i found there are still exist & still can be assigned shortcut in navigation button but it won't shown in phone menu...anybody know why? I can say that it is pretty good to start a fresh upgrade firmware like V21.0.016 for N95-1 with fresh installing ie not RESTORE from previous firmware back up data...but we had thounand of valuable data ..so what can we do? So when think of this important data , we r sure to restore bac. Once restore sometime depends LUCK..If lucky enough all data restored is OK & workable but not all the time is so good..I already reformat V21.0.016 three times but there is some problem must be happen....tired !

Something you are installing. Some third party application is causing this problem.
Try NOT installing all those games and other applications or install one by one until you find which one is causing the problem.

i used only Sandisk 4GB sdhc card , used up 2,885kb card memory, available card memory is 993kb...phone memory around 100MB. Every time i on my N95-1 (v21.0.016) , i hav to wait abt 10 minutes to get the phone totally boot up to menu...i installed quite a number of games in card memory, now my RAM available when just boot up left 25MB instead of 28MB ...is this more Games will causing this problems? I also installed more than 1,500 mp3 songs in card memory but i don think this will cause the problem..Now i wonder i copy my 4GB data to Sandisk 8GB card will hang my N95-1 if i save more content in 8GB card? anyone can help?

This is characteristic of installing applications and themes to the mass memory. Do not to that.
Once the phone has started up next time, uninstall all the applications and themes on your memory card and install them in the phone's central memory.

  • The N97 is still rubbish on v21 firmware

After upgrading my N97 to v21 there were some improvements but the phone was still very slow and still had several bugs, stability issues, and poor reception.
As I had upgraded without a reset I decided to try doing a complete rebuild of the phone to see if I could iron out some of the issues that I had been having with the phone. So I uninstalled all of the apps, formatted the mass memory, hard reset the phone, reflashed the v21 firmware, hard reset the phone again, performed the setup, re-installed the apps, reloaded my media, and reloaded the maps data. As you can imagine this is not a small undertaking with just the reloading of media and maps taking several hours even though I only use a third of the mass memory.
So after all of this effort the phone was slightly better but still suffers from bugs, stability and performance issues, and poor reception.
Nokia this just isn't good enough for your expensive flagship device. Firstly the consumer shouldn't have to go to this amount of effort for a firmware upgrade and secondly after the v21 firmware upgrade the N97 is still not reliable, terribly slow, and provides a very poor user experience.

The Nokia N97 and the Nokia N97 Mini are rubbish phones. Unfortunately I am locked into a contact, so will have to use this piece of rubbish until 2011. Nokia just don't seem to be able to get it right, as even the new version of the Ovi Suite does not work correctly. I have tried loading this on a machine running XP, Windows 7 and Vista, and the Ovi suite still does not work correctly. When you sync your contacts, it takes for ever, and then gives you an error message. I will never use another Nokia product, they seem to have lost there way

(snip) shall any one from nokia reply our inquiries, why the update is still not officially released ?
Whilst it would be nice for a reply from Nokia - this forum from Nokia is a One-Way Conversation with them - they "sometimes" read but dont ever reply, as this is designed to be a Peer-to-peer forum, so the only replies you'll get are from interested/well informed users, and may not be gospel truth.
They choose not reply which can frustrate most new users, the older ones tend to just put up with it. /end
The online code number checker is sometimes behind. When the release is official, then it normally appears on this page: http://www.nokia.co.uk/link?cid=EDITORIAL_799361 as have all the other updates.
When it does you will, depending on if your handset has a branded specific software, be able to download and install it, when its released for your product code. Until then you have to sit tight.
I dont know why some service points have it, perhaps they have it for beta testers or something. I know I use every function on my phone and if there is a fault in the software I'm highly likely to find it. Unless they are adding more stuff into the N95 the current V20 performs pretty well.

Thats the networks fault, not nokia's.
Depending on which network you are on you may never see v20.

  • N95-1 V21.0.016 MAKE APPLICATIONS DOWNLOAD FAIL !

I notice that this V21 in my N95-1 make my application/software/games installed in difficulty ! sometimes some games & application just cannot be installed properly...but it "eating my memory card memory". I do check my application manager but suprise to know that application not installed but memory already being occupied ! If some games successful installed but it really take times to installed ! Previously i was using N95 with V12.0.014..no such problem at all...install anything is so fast & no system "crash" with same application or games as now...It seem like phone system have to travel a long "circle" only can get thing done , worse still sometime is out of installation after long "travelling".
I really sad with this firmware V21.0.016 with N95-1 released ......

Something you are installing. Some third party application is causing this problem.

  • N95 cannot update firmware in Australia?

    Hi,
I have a Nokia N95 purchased on 7th August 2008 from Telstra Australia on a 24 mth contract. Firmware is V10.2.006, I would like to update the firmware to the latest version to hopefully iron out a few bugs and generally speed this thing up. However, when trying to update via a PC/USB through the Nokia updater application I keep receiving the message that my firmware is already up to date. It quite obviously is not, research has indiacted it is V21 or later. Can somebody please explain why this service is not available to me?
    Thanks all,
    Smarteee.

  • Nokia N95 8gb latest firmware update 21/02/13

Hi, I have had a problem whilst updating my N95 8gb and now it appears, I think, that the  firmware version I have is an older one than I had previously, but there isn't anything newer showing as availaable. I have 35,0.001. I am sure that the last time I had a problem, after it was "flashed", the firmware I had installed by the shop was this and then when I got home and went to restore my files, there was a new update available on line. The rreason I say this is that the icons and colours etc are like the version installed by the shop, about 1 year ago and when I updated the software everything was different. If what I am saying is correct, does anyone know if this newer firmware update has now been withdrawn or can anyone throw any light on the subject as I am a little confused! Thanks

If your N95 8GB is RM-320 the last available firmware for all product codes is v35.0.001. Using restore via Nokia Suite can only reset your individual personalisation settings.
