N95 8GB SMS question

When I receive a new SMS all I get is "one new message received".  I'm sure that with other Nokia's that I've had it tells you who the SMS is from, but not with my N95.  I'm on the Three network, is this something to do with the network or settings?   Please advise.

That is perfectly normal for an N95 8GB.
Some other nokia models do tell you who the message is from on the main screen but not the N95.
You can add that feature by using one of the programs below.  Try the demos and see which you prefer.

  • N95 8GB Newbie question re Text Messaging

    Hello Folks,
I live in the USA an have AT&T as a provider. I am just learning my around the N95 8GB. When I try to send a text message I get a screen with two window. One is label "Text message Center" and the other has "message center number" in it. Does anyone have any idea what to put in these windows? I tied calling the local AT&T store and they had no idea.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.
    John

Thanks for your first reply Sage.
I tried the remove the battery and SIM card suggestion but to no avail.
As mentioned in my first message, the guy at my local AT&T store seemed to have no idea what I was asking for. He said that all text messaging was "mobile to mobile."
Perhaps I need another source at AT&T or perhaps I am going down the wrong track.
If anyone else has a suggestion, please let me know. I am sure I am not the only one in the USA with AT&T who has faced this questions.
    Thanks again folks.

  • N95 8GB SMS contacts display

    Hey all
    (be nice, im new )
Just got my n95 8GB today and it's awesome, but i'm having trouble with contacts in the inbox -
what happens currently is when i get a message in it displays last name, first name - ie Smith Bob, instead of Bob Smith
Does anyone know how to change this so that it doesn't happen?
I've tried changing the settings in the contacts list but it doesn't seem to help.

There is no setting for it unfortunatley...
The best way to cure this if it really is an issue ( although time consuming) would be to swap the names around in first name last name i.e.
    First Name: Bob
    Last Name: Smith
Shows as Smith Bob in SMS
    Make it
    First Name: Smith
    Last Name: Bob
Shows as bob Smith in a message...
    Good luck

  • N95 8GB Camera question

    Hi,
I just got my phone and I love it so far! but I'm puzzled as to why the camera is unprotected? Didn't the earlier version have a shutter?
I'm very careful with it, and really don't want to hide it in a custom "sock" :-) ... I'm just surprised. Why offer 5mp and a Carl Zeiss lens and leave it unprotected?

Incidentally, according to my local nokia shop, they decided not to include the shutter on the N958GB because people complained about the shutter catching on their clothes and opening in their pockets.
    Sound like nonsense to you?
To be honest, yes. I've never had my N95's shutter open on its own in my pocket and it sounds more like the bloke was searching for a plausible answer to the question why the shutter was removed.
I think it was simply a way to reduce the production cost of the handset.
Maybe Nokia will consider putting it back on future models if enough people raise the concern.

  • N95 8gb notes question

I have a lot of notes on my n95 and was just wondering if I can save them to my laptop somehow then delete them off my phone? Was thinking maybe synch with PC suite or back-up?

Hi, if you have an Ovi Account you can use it to sync your phone , just set phone details, they'll txt the settings to your phone and you can then sync contacts, calendar and notes OTA and save them in your Ovi Account, I use it regularly (plus if you;d deleted them and needed them you can get them back by syncing away from a computer !)

  • N95 8GB compatibility question

how comes that almost every application I come accross which is for Symbian system is not compatible with this phone, even if it is compatible with N96 for example (here is an example - the Text-to-speech http://europe.nokia.com/A4286225 and themobile dictionary.
what the *&#$??? it is a real bummer

S60 is the Nokia addition over the Symbian underlying operation system. S60 is the smartphones platform (N and E series, as well as some other series). 3, 3.1, 3.2 means 3rd edition and the .1/.2 means Feature pack (FP). The edition should be though as the version of Windows (XP, for example), while the Feature pack shall be treated as Service pack. While the edition implies major system changes, the feature pack adds some not so dramatic system changes. For example, the 3rd edition of S60 was shipped with changed security, caching, kernel modifications and graphics; S60 5th edition is available for the newer touch devices (5800 and N97). When choosing application, you need to look for those stated as compatible with S60 3rd editions (also written as S60.3 or S60 3). Feature packs built upon the existing edition mostly in terms of applications. Feature pack 1, for example, brought alarm clock with multiple alarms, as well as alarm sounding when the phone is off. In general, simple applications written for given edition will be compatible across the feature packs, but will fail on another edition. So, S60 3.1 applications will probably work on S60 3.2, but not on S60 2 or S60 5. This does not apply for all applications, though. You can read more about S60 here:

  • N95 8GB inbox mess! sort/order sms by date!!

Why do ew sms messages I recieve on my N95 8GB suddenly appear in a randon spot (i.e. not at the bginning or end of the inbox list) even though I tried more than once to do "Sort by: Date"!!?

I have an N95 and installed firmware 31.0.17 in February 2009. It is still the latest version in August. The phone was OK for about 3 months, until I returned from a holiday overseas. Since then it has occasionally got confused about the date, even though I have network time updates always turned off. The phone usually decides it is several days in the future and so my calenday goes crazy. I change the date manually, then it works fine until a few days later, when it suddenly loses several days again. When I correct the date this second time, the phone usually runs OK for a month or more.
I cannot sort my messaging inbox or sent folder properly - by date, name or subject. They appear to be ordered randomly. I wondered whether this date scrambling problem is corrupting the file system timestamps of some of my sms entries....
... however, when I connect the client to my IMAP mail server (which provides sensible dates), the phone fails to present my email folder contents in the right order too!
Why hasn't someone from Nokia support responded to this thread? This problem has existed for about a year and persisted through more than one firmware version?

  • Automatic sms forwarding from N95 8gb

Hi, i have a Nokia N95 8GB on the Vodafone network, however the screen has died and i cannot see anything on it. The rest of the phone still works as normal as i can connect it via the T.V out cable and see whats going on that way, however this is not possible to do when i am out and about. I have another mobile to use in the iterm, until my 5800 finally arrives or they get it in stock, and i have set all calls to divert to the other handset. I need to know if you can adjust any settings via the phone to set up sms forwarding or if it is possible via messgae centre number adjustments via the network provider.
I hope someone out there has maybe managed this, or knows of a way to do it, im not that much of a phone buff.
    Thanks,

Yes, but you need to use an additional piece of software.
These apps will do it but they all need to be signed.

  • N95 8GB Questions..

    Hi all.
Got my N95 8GB the other day. Great phone!
The 8GB storage, can I rearrange that like i want? Will the phone make new directories if it needs it?
Why is there a "videos" and "my videos" listed? Which one does it use? Is one for movies taken with cam, and the other as a storage? Which one do I put my own vidoes in so they will be listed in videocentral? Also, will videocentral scan sub directories and include them, like the music player does?
And last, is It possible to restet the phone completly, I mean EVERYTHING, so its just like when I got it? I have been poking around. :-)

It doesnt take forever, just a day or two
It automatically processess all new media that arrives on Mass Storage, it takes time, but when its done its ok. By the way, that doesnt make small 320x240 thumb pics from your big pictures though. You'll have to wait in Picture viewer...

  • A question of N95 8GB lifeblog

I tried to post the pics to my flickr and blogger by using the lifeblog in my N95 8GB, but it keep saying " web server reported error ".
I did all the set up according this web page " www.flickr.com/tools/lifeblog/ "
Can anyone help me to solve this problem, thank you.

    @Driftmonkey
Unfortunately as happens with pre-owned devices at some stage repair shop flashed software for your locality, whilst the seven digit product code upon label under battery remains that of Italian TIM network; so when you use Nokia software Updater it delivers latest firmware against this product code (TIM).
If you have carried out green, star and three keys depressed power on "hard reset" and re-installed device software there is not much more that you can do having hopefully eliminated any possible software corruption.

  • Nokia N95 8GB Album Art and Album Folders Issue

I have been hunting for for a resolution for two issues with the N95 8GB Media Player all over the web.
    1. Adding artwork (CD Covers) to audio tracks (or albums) seems to be at best hit and miss. Most of the time it just does not work.
    2. Deleting an album delete all the tracks but deleting the album folder seems almost impossible.
Well this weekend I decided to try to solve this and I think I may have hit upon a solution.
Since so may people have the same problem I thought it worth repeating. I would stress this has not been exhaustively tested but it does work reliably so far.
I am using Nokia Music Manager 2.0. The fix is simply to convert the files to AAC rather than to M4A (which is the default). After this simple change everythig worked find for me. I can add and delete albums from Nokia Music Manager 2.0 (don't forget to refresh on the phone afterwards) AND reliably add Album Artwork.
So here is how I have been working.
    1. Set the conversion format to AAC. I have been using 'Ultra high' quality setting. Options Menu >> Setting >> Conversion Tab.
    2. Next put in a CD, select all the tracks and choose copy to my collection.
    3. While this is going on I find the artwork on the Web. A simple Google Image search with the album title and artists last name / band name seems pretty 100% to get the on the first page. Download image to My Documents / My Pictures.
    4. Once the CD Rip is complete they will all appear in My Collection. I select all the tracks in my collection for the album in question, and then right click on one of them and select Edit.
    5. I then attach the Album Artwork by clicking on the blue folder and choosing it from my, MY Pictures folder.
    6. Finally select Copy to Phone from the File Menu.
This has worked for me so far 100% and I have done 20 or so albums.
    NOTES:
To get Nokia Music Manager 2.0 I uninstalled the version of Nokia Phone Suite that came with my phone and went to
http://europe.nokia.com/A4144905I (or seach Google for "nokia phone suite"
I chose the N95 8GB downloaded and installed. At some point shortly after install Phone Suite informed me that there were updates available and Nokia Music Manager 2.0 was one of these.
I was originaly using this and suffered all the problems you guys have. After searching the web and finding no solution I decided to do some experimenting.
    Hope all this helps.
PS If you need to delete all your legacy album folders, this is the fix I found on this same site. You can do this at any time.
    1. Enable the option to be able to see Hidden Files and Folders in your Windows Explorer.
    2. Connect your n95 8gb to your computer and choose data transfer mode.
    3. Go to My COmputer >> Nokia Phone Browser >> Nokia N95 8GB >> Memory Card E:
    3. If you have selected Show Hidden Files and Folders (see 1) you should see a folder called Private.
    4. In the Private folder you need to delete the contednts of three folders
    \private\101FFC31 (mpxv1.mpd and pcv5.mpd)
    \private\101f8857\Cache
    \private\101ffca9
In all the 3 folders delete all the files Not the FOLDER
Next time you restart the music player it will rebuild the indexes without the deleted albums folders.
Hope this helps someone. It restored my sanity.

    Album Art
    Basically there are two methods
    Method 1.
You do it on the phone. Load the album art pictures to the memory card. (Must be JPEG NOT BMP)
    Load also the music files.
Open Music application in the phone. Open an album then select Options->Album art then Options-> Add, browse for the picture and select Ok.
    Repeat for each ALBUM
    Method 2.
You do it on the PC.
Get a Tag editing software like Tag&Rename, WINAMP, etc.
Edit the files Metadata to include Album Art picutres (again they should be jpeg and also they should be set as Cover Front).
Transfer the files that have Album Art using File transfer (usb mass storage) don't use MTP or PC Suite as these methods may convert the files and Album Art will be lost.
Or you can continue using your Method

  • Data recovery from N95 8Gb internal memory

    Hello
My girlfriend's N95 8Gb came to something of a nasty end over the weekend. No screen, no keyboard, camera unit's out, but, with a battery the lights still come on. The question is whether we can recover anything from the internal 8Gb flash memory. Any thoughts as to whether anything's salvageable and/or how to go about it? Has anybody been in the same position and succeeded in recovering any data?
    Cheers

Thank you for your replies cjlim and jjegan.
The main problem I've got with mass storage mode is that with no screen nor keyboard I can't really select anything. I suspect when I connect the USB cable its probably waiting for me to select mass storage or PC Suite modes before it registers as a device on my PC. At the moment I therefore don't know for sure the connection's working. As I say the lights come on, so I'm hoping the main board is still in some sort of working condition. Guess I could see if the Nokia service centre could add a keyboard and screen??
Although costly I'd be quite happy to pay a data recovery specialist to get the images back, but I'm wondering how to even find such a specialist. I've searched google for a data recovery specialist in Singapore, but to no avail. They all seem to be fine with flash memory cards (as I am), but seem to baulk at an internal flash memory chip.

  • N95 8Gb - no longer able to pair with Jabra BT8040

    Hi,
Last week I was prompted to upgrade the software on my N95 8Gb after being prompted. So I backup the phone (everthing ticked) and then upgraded to software v30.0.018, 23-07-08, RM-320, Nokia N95 (94.01). The upgrade when ahead without any issues, and I restored all the settings from the backup. All was working fine as it was before contacts, data, ringtones etc, except when I when to use the Jabra BT8040 headset (which was previously working). The headset wasn't in the paired listing, so I try starting from scratch. The headset when it is turned on always goes into pairing mode, so I tried searching for it but the phone doesn see it. I have tried switching headset on first and last, tried switching to phone off completly, but it still does work!!
Just to make sure the bluetooth is still working I tried linking the phone to my laptop which worked first time.......
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks, FC

Hi, I don't think the headset problem is with the phone specifically, I had a jabra headset, and from memory you need to hold one of the buttons for a few seconds till the light flashes/changes colour, then search for it with phone and pair it using either '1111' or'0000' , Check manual for headset or download from jabra website. As for sms/txt call your sevice provider and explain the problem, they can send you the settings by sms/txt and you can install from that and it should be ok. Hope this helps.
    Good Luck
