(N95) Datamatrix reader

Hello all!
I have a N95 which came with a 2d code reader by default. The problem is that after reading a code, the only option avaiable is to open an URL.
A 2d code can pass much more instructions to the phone, such as 'save as new contact', 'send a SMS', 'Go to URL', and, of course, the default option of showing the text coded.
I needed to install the Kaywa reader to get the option of 'send a SMS' after reading the code, which was created using 'smsto:mobile_number:text'. Also the reader by UPCODE and I-NIGMA worked sucessfully with it.
Is Nokia going to update their reader? Where can I argue someone from Nokia about this?
Thanks in advance,
Paulo Franzoni

The type of barcode it reads are called Data Matrix codes, they look like a square made of lots of random black & white pixels (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datamatrix)
Although these kinds of codes are not so common here in Europe, they are more popular further accross the globe and getting more common here. Some magazines in parts of Asia have lots of these codes throughout which allows the reader to find out secret information or gain access to secret websites or even to get free stuff!
Although it's easy to say 'why would anyone want a barcode reader on their phone' it's probably better to have it on your phone for those odd occasions when you do come accross a Data Matrix code and can scan something, rather than not - after all it's only a tiny application on the handset; just see the fun side of the possibilities it provides.

  • N95 8GB Isnt reading/detecting any memory card.

My N95 isnt reading or noticing that a memory card is inserted, I tryed formating it it wouldnt let me, a message comes up saying "Drive not found". Even when i create a fold inside it a massage comes sayinf "Param error".
    Clicking Open says empty.
I tryed to formating on the PC, but nothing changes, its still says the same thing.
I tryed 2 new memory cards and both gave me the same messages.
could I have some help pls.

I remind you that if you have something calling itself a Nokia N95 8GB that has a memory card slot, then it most certainly isn't a genuine Nokia device.
This being the case, all bets are off when it comes to hardware compatibility and you will receive no support here. All I can say is simply that the µSD card reader in your phone is most likely not an SDHC reader, meaning that it won't accept cards greater than 2GB.

  • Is there a facility to put a GPS aerial on the N95...

I got the N95 really in order to have a neat GPS/OS map system for hill walking and a phone in one and have just been trying my N95 with some OS 1:25000 and 1:50000 maps from Viewranger (excellent mapping product, excellent service). Walking about with the phone open in your hand to maintain GPS reception is a pain - I wonder if there is the facility to have a simple wire GPS aerial like a headphone wire for FM reception so the phone could be in your pocket (except when you wanted to check the map) and the wire outside? Bluetooth would drain the battery too much, especially if GPS was running. One other option would be a case like an IPOD case that runners use, strapped to your arm to leave your hands free - perhaps those are available - anyone know the answer to these two questions?
Idea for Nokia - how about making the maps downloadable by country - for example Europe is a whopping 1.4GB and took me more than an hour to download, fortunately to my PC. To be able to download just single or multiple countries would be great.

Does this GPS receiver work with Nokia Maps? If it does, how do you get the phone to use it instead of its internal GPS receiver?

  • Putting Video onto N95 8GB

I have tried to put an .avi file onto my phone using the nokia video manager but it just said converting video and didn't finish. I left it overnight just in case it was really slow but in the morning it was still in the same spot. i then tried to convert it and send it to the pc rather than straight to phone in case that worked but still no luck.
any ideas on how to get the video manager working or what settings i can use to convert myself as i can use Super converter. also if i convert it myself, how do i put it into the video folder on the phone?

Nokia N95 CAN read AVI files all you need is the right software.
    Try:
    CorePlayer http://coreplayer.com/
    DivX Player http://www.divx.com/mobile/
    SmartMovie (just google it)
I don't recommend Nokia Video Manager if you have long clips (over 30 min long) since it will fail.
See my blog and posts here:

    El_Loco
Do we need to install coreplayer in the phone ? OR N-95 can read AVI directly ?.

  • Remove N-Gage that came with Nokia N95 firmware ve...

I've noticed that when you uninstall the N-Gage aplication,
it leaves in the Nokia N95's read only memory (ROM,)
the aplication ngiinstaller.exe, this causes a death link in the
    aplication menu called Games.
How do I remove this link, it's no longer needed, they sould'nt even putted the N-Gage standard in the firmware, the link does'nt delete by hand, only says that it is not removable.

  • Hotmail,text messages and an N95

I have configured my hotmail account to send me a text message whenever I get specific emails. The trouble is that it only sends one line of the email and I have to send a text message reply to get more of the email. This is very time consuming and expensive!
Can anybody help me with this?

Ask Microsoft to change Hotmail to send more of the message (however, it'd be more expensive for them, so they're not likely to do so).
Or use the N95 browser to read the Hotmail messages: http://mobile.msn.com/wml/
Or get the Microsoft Live software for the N95 to read/sync your Hotmail inbox to the Messaging application directly.
Or get the paid (for fee) POP3 access to your Hotmail mailbox.

  • N95 Firmware Updates

Anone care to explain the following.
From the Home Page, Click on >
Get Support & Software then under > Make your choice >
    Phones and devices,
Click on the arrow for the drop-down
choice of phones, and choose the Nokia N95
(not the 8GB) Choose the N95 and then
    Click on the Go Button
Then under the big flashy purple advert,
Click on > Update your Nokia N95
Then read the text under >
    Update your Nokia N95 software
    Here is states:
    Software version 20.0.015
for your Nokia N95, enhances your
device's battery, stability and performance etc.,
Is this version still available? and if so,
how do I get it. Also, why is it
that when you follow the links to the Software Updater
for the N95 it comes up with Version 21.0.016
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The information on nokia's site sounds like it's a bit out of date. Some of the regional sites can be a bit slow.
The latest version is v30 which released a few days ago.
When you use the nokia software updater it offers you the latest version thats available for your specific phone, based on it's product code.
The latest version isn't always available for all product codes, especially those that belong to network branded models. This is because the networks have to approve new firmware before nokia can distribute it.
If the updater offers you v21 or v30 there is no way to choose an earlier version instead.
The best (and most up to date) place to see which update is available is here:

  • N95 8gb SPECIFICATIONS?

    hello everyone,
i am debating wheather or not i should still buy the n95 8gb cell phone, but some things are stil getting in the way of my frustration. Like 1. will resolution on screen be pixealated even with video and pictures...(this i heard throughout the internet)....and is the battery life really a big difference compared to the n95 european model.....please if anyone can answer this
    NOKIA N96 rocks

Maybe what you have to consider for N95 8gb is :
    1. no slot for external memory, which means that you will stuck with ONLY 8gb.
    2. no lens cover
    3. higher price than original N95
    4. only black color
BUT the rest of the features are a quite big improvement compare to N95 original.

  • N95-I love it!

Anybody with good things to say about the N95?
Me personally I am loving it as I have just switched from a SE W800i, I was getting soooo bored with SE's lack of new looks and interface...I was going to get a K810i but it still looks the same...
    N95=ACE

I love mine too! Working in Thailand with my N95 I read all the papers. Browse the internet, keep in touch with friends back home via email, watch sky news, listen to all the podcasts. I even watch movies with Real Player, listen to all the BBC radio I want and watch the BBC news downloads!Take great pictures and video and upload to Twango so family and frends back home can veiw!Play great games: Skyforce, Alien pinball, Tomb Raider. Love using Peerbox! Get all weather and travel info via worldmate. And with all the music I want to hear on it too. Oh yeah and make phone calls! The N95 is a great multi-media device and I haven't even listed all the things I've got mine set up to do.One thing I have learned over time is something folks back home don't always have the luxury of; is don't buy a branded phone. My N series phones have always worked great over here. Well done Nokia, this one really takes the biscuit!

  • N95 Disappointment

    Dear all,
I used to be a sony ericsson fan and was contemplating purchasing the new k850 but changed my mind and bought an N95 after reading many reviews. I would like to share with you my regret! the N95 is a nightmare! PC suite is full of bugs and errors and to this day i can't back up my contacts. i recieve messages from contacts but don't see their name in the message. only their number appears. i have searched this forum for answers but nothing... the battery life is silly, really. the camera only gives decent pictures in very well lit environments and the list goes on. I will revert back to Sony Ericsson very soon and i advise all people looking for their next phone to steer clear from Nokia

Been using Nokia phones for 10 years now. Used the PC Suite only once several years ago - installed it, played for a few days, hated it (useless programm which takes without asking a lot of PC resources), unistalled it, never used it again. Perfectly doing everything what I want with my phone without PC Suite.
I consider the pictures from N95 to be great and enough for me in most cases not only for viewing on PC but also for printing. You have to find some review to compare the pictures from N95 and K850 - Ive seen one on the net, but dont remember the link. Youll be surprised.
And last - Sony Ericsson used to make truly good phones, but this year they havent done anything even close to the last Nokia N-Series models.

  • When i can get the nex fw of n95 8g?

V20 have shown off!but it is too bad! i am waiting for a better one!when i can get the new fw?
    who can tell me?
    Do better than the best!

I don't use ASR (useless feature, IMO; I tried it and it seemed slow and annoying, so I turned it off).
I don't see any problems with the "Help" feature (not that it says much that I need to know, but the "Help" application seem to work just fine for me, as well as the Options -> Help selection in all those applications I tried). No bugs as far as i can see.
I don't think I've ever seen an out of memory error on my N95 8GB (I saw it on the original N95 when browsing web sites with big web pages, but never on the N95 8GB).

the formatting can be done with PC, that is simple enough though it would be helpful if keffa would not only say "file system changes" but would actually say what those changes are. I presume though he means FAT32, which can be done with a computer. What remains to be seen is if N95 can format FAT32 itself. For those who have N95 can they say which file system N95 formats the memory card by default?
Yes, the changes are indeed from the FAT file system which only supports up to 2GB partitions, to FAT32 which can be taken further.
Although you can format the card on your PC, the N95 cannot read FAT32 which is why the firmware upgrade will be needed.
At the moment the N95 will natively format the phone in FAT and can only read FAT partitions. The firmware upgrade will allow it to read FAT32.

  • N95 SLOW IMAP protocol

I am using IMAP on my N95 for reading email.
It appears to be very very slow.
The systems people here have traced the IMAP daemon on the server when the N95 is reading email. It seems that the N95 insists on checking all folders even if they are not subscribed to. And since I have almost 2000 folders it takes forever.
I wonder if there are others that have have experienced a similar problem and/or if there is a fix for this problem
I have recently updated the software on the N95
    Thanks
    Ole L Madsen

    Hello,
I've also been facing issues with my N95-1 (RM-159).
It recently went to repair under guarantee due to a distorted loudspeaker, and came back with updated firmware (v35.0.002).
Prior to the firmware update (I can't precisely tell which one it had before, but it was the one it came from the factory, and was was customized for the local cell phone provider, so I think it wouldn't help), it was fast and responsive eventhough I had my gmail configured and my work e-mail (2 different mail boxes).
Now, if I configure just the gmail account, it takes about 15 seconds to open the "messages" application, and if I select the mailbox, another 20-30 seconds to open. If I configure both, it can take up to a minute to be able to access the "messages" application. The whole phone becomes very slow and sluggish until I shut down the "messages" application.
I will try to reset both the phone memory and format the memory card to see if it helps. But I would like to know if anyone have here a workaround to get my phone working as before with the original firmware.
Not even counting with the problem I'm facing that I'm not able to update ovi maps to 3.0 version due to a failure on ovi maps updater, that can't get enough information from the phone (code 3, unespecified error number 1).
