  • Problems with ViaVoice under Leopard, especially key mapping problems

ViaVoice's behavior has changed considerably under Leopard. First I will discuss the key mapping problem, since I'm eagerly looking for an answer to this problem. At the end of this post, I will voice some of the other problems I've experienced for those who may be interested. The key mapping problem may be specific to the fact that I use a foreign keyboard with a US version of ViaVoice.
    INTRO:
I have used ViaVoice on my Mac for years, more or less without problems (ViaVoice's bugginess is notorious).
Those who know ViaVoice will know that one has two general options for dictation. One can dictate into ViaVoice's so-called SpeakPad, which allows special formatting, editing and dictation error correction within the dictated text, or one can dictate into "external" software such as Microsoft Word, in which case ViaVoice just sends a string of characters to that software. SpeakPad appears to make strong use of the operating system's built-in functionality for character formatting, document formatting, etc.
    *MY PROBLEM*
I have a German keyboard on my PowerBook, yet dictate in US English. When I dictated into SpeakPad under Tiger, all characters appeared correctly. However, when I dictated into Microsoft Word using Tiger, I had to switch the keyboard mapping from German to US to get all characters (that means including the characters that are located at different positions on a German keyboard than they are on a US keyboard such as y, z, apostrophes and parentheses) to appear correctly.
Under Leopard, things have changed. Now it doesn't matter whether I dictate into SpeakPad or Word; the results are the same and many characters do not appear correctly.
If set to a German keyboard, y and z appear as expected. To name a few irregularities:
    "(" appears as ")"
    ")" appears as "="
    apostrophes appear as "#" and
    ";" appears as ","
If set to a US keyboard, y and z are interchanged. "(" and ")" appear as expected. Apostrophes appear as "\" and ";" appears as ","
By comparison, if typed (as opposed to dictated, as in the examples above) "correctly" (i.e. based on the letters printed on the keyboard) on a German keyboard set to imitate a US keyboard:
    y and z are interchanged
    apostrophes appear as "|"
    "(" appears as "*"
    ")" appears as "(" and
";" appears as the symbol for "less than"
Since I don't have a US keyboard, I can't say how it would behave if set to imitate a German keyboard, i.e. if there's a correlation to the results I get when I dictate.
Since I was previously able to dictate correctly into SpeakPad by setting the keyboard to "German" and into Word by setting the keyboard to "US," I presume that this is a problem in Leopard, not ViaVoice.
*OTHER PROBLEMS WITH VIAVOICE UNDER LEOPARD*
In addition to the aforementioned key mapping problems (that may be specific to those of us with foreign keyboards), ViaVoice appears to have lost considerable functionality in Leopard. I cannot access SpeakPad's Preferences and the correction window. Moreover, the traffic-light like window buttons have disappeared from the VoiceCenter (although they work if you click where they should be). SetupAssistent appears to function.
I've written to Nuance about these problems, but have little hope that they will invest the time in producing a patch since they haven't released any updates since 2003.

    Thrums1,
I've never had to "register" ViaVoice after updating the system. I thus suspect you haven't fully followed my above, three-step advice (particularly step 3).
    1) Reinstall ViaVoice from CD.
    2) Update to the latest version (using the patch downloadable from Nuance's website).
    3) Replace the “temp” and “users” folders (in the "ViaVoice" folder at the upper level of your home directory) by a previous copy thereof. When I say previous copy, I mean a copy from when ViaVoice was still working properly, e.g. a copy from when it was running under Tiger.
As I said, I've gotten ViaVoice to survive several system updates by following the above steps. To my knowledge, the last step is critical since it saves you from having to reconfigure ViaVoice under the new operating system (in this case Leopard). I suspect that ViaVoice is crashing on your system because it's trying to start some module of the SetUpAssistant that is incompatible with Leopard (as many are). If you instead use old copies of the "temp" and "users" folders (from the previous system), then ViaVoice doesn't have to go through the initial "registration" process; ViaVoice doesn't need the SetUpAssistant; and all is (more or less) fine.
    Good luck!
BTW, to my knowledge, Dictate only runs on Intel Macs. It thus won't run on a G4 iBook, just as it won't run on my PowerBook G4.

I just took apart may laptop for cleaning and upon re-attaching the keyboard and everything else, I noticed my Numlock key light no longer turns on? I double-checked and made sure the wires were all plugged correctly. The Caps Lock key light works fine. Any ideas? Perhaps it burned out?

My battery life at a full 100% charge is about 2 hours 22 minutes (backlight and key lights at lowest level). Should I go complaining to Apple or do I just need different software? I've only had my mac book since August 2011. The battery dies in 2 to 3 hours with some web surfing (little video play) and photo editing etc. I really don't feel like taking my computer all the way to the apple store to wait there for 5 hours to hear that I need to call someone blah blah blah. Any advice? (BTW Safari hasn't been working since I last updated my mac, WHYYYY?)

  • Macbook Pro Key repeat problem

I've had my MacBook Pro for almost 2 years now but it's recently started to have keyboard repeat issues. The keys are not physically stuck but behave like they are, in a totally random manner - including the delete key and the space bar. Messages will end up lookinggggggg a bittttttt like thissssssssssssss. Very annoying.
This tends to be accompanied by a sluggish trackpad too. Then after a while - it behaves normally again.
I have nothing else attached - anyone any ideas?
    Thanks
    curlydog

I've been having an occasional key repeat problem for a while, I'd say for a year. I'll be typing, and then I'll stop, and the last key I pressed starts repeating and keeps going until I press another key. I've also seen it miss characters sometimes. This happens more often than a key repeating by itself. I'll be sure I pressed a key, but I get "wrds like ths." Maybe I'm just not pressing a key "deep" enough. Sometimes I've tried typing a bit slower and that seems to help.
I regret not bringing my laptop in for someone to look at earlier, but I've been very busy for the last couple years. The problem hasn't occurred often enough to make it a problem that I felt compelled to solve right away. It just feels like an annoyance, like, "Come on. This shouldn't have made it off the line like this!" I don't want to start a "war", but I had a Windows laptop before my Mac and I never had these problems with the keyboard. There are other attributes I like about my Mac, so it's annoying but not a big deal for me.
I usually run VMWare Fusion 2.0, and I've suspected that it's a culprit. The problem doesn't just occur on web pages, though that's where I usually notice it when it happens. I've seen it in TextEdit as well. What I notice is it happens when I've got something else running in the background taking up CPU time. Maybe the computer is swapping to/from disk. Sometimes I've seen it happen on a web page with some slow Javascript on it, again taking up CPU time. It seems to me it's a matter of the hardware or software missing the signal from the keyboard. Perhaps it's related to the "keyboard sleep" problem, which I've also seen, where the keyboard and trackpad just go dead. In this case I put the computer to sleep for a bit and then wake it back up. That brings both back for a bit, but it usually reoccurs, in which case I reboot it.
I've been hoping that Apple would come out with a patch for the key repeat problem. So far I haven't seen it. Would an upgrade to Snow Leopard fix it?

  • Numlock key lights up when I press F5 and no chime is heard on start up

    HI,
I have a 12" iBook G4 with a broken screen. So, I cannot see anything on the screen, but till a couple of hours back I could hear the start up chime. I connected it to an external monitor to see if it shows anything. Nothing came up on the screen. So, I pressed all combination of buttons on the keyboard. After that nothing is working. The numlock key lights up when I press F5 and not F6. I inserted a CD, but it doesn't come out when I press F12. The Caps Lock is working fine. Any help will be appreciated! I want to use my iBook with an external monitor.
    Thanks!

  • How do you fix key light eyedropper after yosemite upgrade in ae cs5.5

since the yosemite upgrade the key light and every other eyedropper in ae crashs the program. a pop up noting: Unable to obtain the User 'Language' registry key at: Software\Adobe\After Effects\10.5\ Defaulting to 'en_US'. could domeone please help? thank you

If you change the After Effects preferences to use the system color picker, that might help. But, as Todd says, you're using software that is not supported on that OS. I'd recommend upgrading to CC because it has tons of useful new features (copy with property links, anyone?) and is on sale right now for rather cheap.

  • X240 keyboard indicators light problem

    Hi,
The indicator lights have seemed to have swapped positions on the keyboard on my x240.
When I press the mute key, the light on the microphone key turns on. When I press the microphone button, the FN key lights up. And finally, when I hold down FN + esc, the mute light turns on.
Not sure if it was a coincidence, the time is usually auto set with the internet time. However, the time had also changed and was wrong. I changed it back, but the indicator lights on the keyboard are still wrong.
Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks

  • Having a real difficult time with Key Light

I'm reading Mark Christiansen's After Effects CS4 Studio Techniques and Ive read the section on using Key Light 5 times and still cant get a key like his examples.  I'm trying to conquer two things that just are seeming impossible. One to retain the whisps of hair blowing in the wind and 2, to get rid of the green spill on the edges.  I've tried the 3 Pass Method, which he does not very cleary explain, and I cant get the edge matte that it is supposed to produce.  He leaves some of the important infomation written in the side notes, and other things are just plain confusing and he does not make clear reference to the examples on the DVd.
Can anyone help me conquer this keying or at least point me in the direction so that I can learn this Step by CLEAR Step.
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
The principle here is simple - it sounds as though the execution is what's tripping you up.
First, let's get the principle straight. The whole reason to do this is to avoid using Keylight for anything but your edges in order to give them the subtlest possible threshold. This means breaking apart the image, and the most elementary way to do it is to start with three passes: a garbage matte to get rid of background noise/rig that doesn't cross the edges, a holdout matte to get rid of holes in the matte, and finally the edge pass. In more complicated shots it is necessary to break the image down further, for example doing one edge pass for hair and another for the body, etc.
So you can start by just applying Keylight and creating your key.
What I have you doing if that doesn't simply solve your key is to spread the resulting matte (using Simpler Choker with a negative value) so that it's well outside the edges to create the garbage matte. In the previous CS3 version of the book I instructed that you do this on a separate layer and use Stencil Alpha blending mode to apply the result to the layers below, one for the edge matte and one for the holdout matte. You can still do it that way if it's clearer.
Otherwise, on a single layer the steps are
    1. apply Keylight, refine the matte and then leave the View menu set to Intermediate Result - that's important, it insures no color shift
    2. spread the matte with Simple Choker, set to a negative value (usually in the low double-digits)
    3. apply Keylight again to get your edge matte
And after that, if there are holes in the matte, fix them by masking out a separate layer of the same source, below all of the others.
    I hope that helps.

  • N95 keys not working.

For some reason my n95 keys have just stopped functioning. Not all but some. the C,up and toggle left will not work,1 and 8 wont work either. Phone hasnt been dropped or gotten wet or anything stupid like that. I am on the Isle of man at the moment and has really annoyed me. Was working fine and all of a sudden they would not work...anyone got any ideas?
Message Edited by gc33 on 28-May-2008 04:04 PM

Finally got my N95 working on two occasions now even when soaked in Salt water which badly corroded every contact on the circuit board!!
If you feel confident, (you've got nothing to loose) Remove the battery and carefully strip your phone down to the bare board. Each connector simply plugs in to its female socket, take care on handling the data screen put it away somewhere safe!
Use a sewing needle or similar sharp instrument and carefully scratch between each and every solder joint on the phones circuit board and connectors.
Do not scratch any ribbon cable terminations unless really necessary!
Take your time, work carefully and  use a magnifying glass if needed, afterwards flush the cleaned joints with a solvent based electrical cleaner and allow the joints to evaporate dry.
Clean any noticeable dirt away from all areas of your phone and carefully reassemble your N95.
Replace your battery and hopefully your phone should reboot without loss of any data!
You can also try a system reset if this fails, you will loose some data, but I haven't found this necessary. (system reset info already posted)
    Good luck
    Boovy
PS my son's N95 has also been through a full wash cycle in the washing machine and all we needed to replace was the earpiece speaker! We did need to dry it out over 2 days against the tank and placed in a sock of dry rice!!

  • N95 Key problem

I went to sleep with a working phone, woke up not even 2 hours later, went to check it and for some reason none of the buttons are working. On the slide piece or the keypad. The only thing that seems to work is the on/off button on the top. Ive tried restarting it numerous times, taking the battery out etc, but none of these seem to work. My alarms are constantly going off, which i cant stop due to not being able to press buttons, and turning the phone off doesnt stop it either.
I recently updated my phone using the nokia updater and since then my phone has been a bit on/off with things.I was wondering if the update has any related issue? The lights on the keys all still light up which says to me that things are all connected properly? And that it might be a software recognition problem?
My phone was originally purchased August 07, however they replaced it Feb 08 due to a previous problem. Would this mean that I would have to pay for repairs as it is over the 1 year warranty of when I purchased it?

    Hi kattaklysm
Firstly not knowing whether you are in Euro zone or not, I am unable able to say whether warranty is 24 or 12 months here.
I might suggest that you leave battery out for at least 10 minutes, then perhaps see if Nokia Software Updater will recognize the phone and re-install the firmware and reset device by keying in *#7370# followed by 12345 (default Nokia lock code unless altered by yourself)

  • Sound   Key board lights problem

    Dear all,
I have a mac book pro 13 inch i5. I have the latest version of MAC OSX 10.7.4. Now i recently Installed a program call Unibeaste, foolishly i didnt completely understand what the program was used for. I read online that i could use to by a legitmate version of mac osx lion and install it on my HP computer so that way it would easier to sync my laptop with my desktop.
There is just one problem that i am having that is driving me nuts and i cant seem how to fix it, suprising there are alot of tutorials on how to install and use the program but their are none telling you how to remove the program.
I installed unibeaste on my laptop and did the restart as it requested me to do, then after that i notice that my laptop now has not sound whats so ever. I hit the sound key more than once to raise the volume but all it does is remain on mute. I look for the drivers and it turns that the drivers for my speakers have vanished. and on top of that the feature that allows to control the brightness of the keyboard is also not working.
I have a time machine back up, but ofcourse knowing my luck and i cant find it and most likely i wont find it.
My knowledge of computers is limited and i am having a hard time figuring what the **** is it exactly this program did to my laptop. If anyone can please help me with this i really appricate it.
I am looking for a solution that can help my maintain the system that i already have without having to purchase a new version mac OSX lion.
or if i have to i will just upgrade to the new mountain lion (if that will solve my problem)
    please someone help me.

You would probably be better off at posting this question in the forums for the MacBook Pro.  Since all of us in the forum here have MacBook's we don't all have MacBook Pro's so you would probably get more responses from that section of the forums as they are specific for that kind of computer.
