N95 Warning - Map software may be useless

Warning: If you have a Nokia N95 and it did not come with an extra memory card, your mapping software cannot be used until you pay the extra for a card.
Some companies, such as T-Mobile, are selling Nokia N95 without a card. No problem, you think - 160MB must be enough to last me for ages! After all I want to do is to load on my one country (which is a fraction of that) and maybe a ring tone or two.
However the software DEMANDS that maps must go onto an extra memory card and cannot be loaded onto the 160MB of main memory, even if there is plenty available.
Note that this information is not on the box. If it is on the Nokia web site, I couldn't find it, and the store staff when specifically asked if I needed a card for maps said no, the maps should fit onto the main memory.
Please be aware of this if you are considering purchasing a N95.
This information was confirmed with Club Nokia, speaking to Mike. If you want to confirm this, the reference number is 1-127740290

Well I somehow managed it, unless I've misunderstood what you are saying? I didn't get a memory card with my N95 (I've got one on order), and I've download maps on mine. I even set a route between Cambridge and Peterborough and ran a navigation simulation on it. And with voice.Message Edited by preludecrazy on 19-Apr-200701:32 PM

  • Nokia N95 and Maps Software

Hi, Just recently I bought licence to Maps from Nokia for one month just to check how it works. The day I bought this I could not open Maps software for a single time. Because whenever I click on maps, its load 90% then it hang. I tried again and again nothing it does not open, I restart the mobile, nothing happen. Can you please inform me what can I do? Thanking you.

    @countryjet123
Would need to know whether you are using Nokia Maps v2.0 or Ovi Maps v3 from here:http://europe.nokia.com/support/product-support/maps-support/compatibility-and-download#/nokia-n95/
Map data is different between these versions and most common cause of application crashing is corrupt or incorrect data.
You may need to delete E:\cities + .qf file, re-open Maps application to re-initialise application and re-define necessary folder structure for Ovi Suite > Maps to re-download regional mapping.

  • N95 Installed Maps Software Glitch

    Hi,
I just bought a new N95 couple of days back. I clicked on the MAPS icon and the software seems to load only 30% and then returns to the menu screen . I was wondering if anyone had similar problems and how do you resolve this
    Thanks
    Yogithebear

    Hi yogithebear
Carrying out a hard reset returns phone to out of the box condition. If you have a microSD memory card for your phone just back up phone data to it and restore afterwards. Sometimes using PC Suite it can let you down when it comes to restoring.
For your licensed software did you download the .sis to your PC and install via PC Suite with activation code being emailed to you, in which case you can re-inatall software and re-activate?

  • MAP Software inventory

    I've been sent this email:
I am writing with regards to the letter I sent to you on the 4th of July which requested that your organisation completes a Software Asset Management (SAM)
Review in line with the Microsoft Volume License Agreement (VLA) terms and conditions.
In that letter, I advised that I would be making further contact with you via email to provide you with the electronic document called the Deployment Summary which I am pleased to attach.
I have also attached a copy of the original letter that was sent to your organisation along with an FAQ document.
I hope that my initial letter and enclosed leaflet outlined the process and requirements for the review clearly, but to recap the next steps are as follows:
    ·                     Please
download and complete the attached Deployment Summary (DS) document and return it to me within the next 15 days.
    ·                     Upon
receipt of your completed deployment summary, I will work with our reconciliation and queries team to match this information to the licensing information Microsoft holds for your organisation.
    ·                     Once
the information has been analysed, we will produce a License Ownership Position statement for your organisation. There may well be areas that need further clarification and I will work with you to do this.
    ·                     When
this step is complete, a final License Ownership Position will be sent to you and I will advise you on any necessary steps your organisation is required to take to complete the review such as identifying any areas of over licensing or addressing any shortfalls.
    ·                     Finally,
you will receive a SAM tips and guidelines document along with a certification of completion.
In order to make the process as efficient as possible, we would highlight the following:
    ·                     You
may wish to engage your IT provider or a dedicated SAM partner to assist you with the process. We would recommend that you use the Microsoft pinpoint tool to find a specialist SAM partner.
Visit www.microsoft.com/pinpoint and select ‘Software Asset Management’ under the competency tab.
    ·                     Our
records hold information on all purchases under a volume License Program only. When completing the Deployment Summary, we recommend that you request from your IT partner/s a list of the OEM (pre-installed and hardware) or Fully Packaged Product (boxed retail
copies) that you have purchased. This is to ensure that we are evaluating your total license ownership position.
    ·                     If
you have purchased Volume Licenses under a different company name or have acquired licenses, for example from the acquisition or merger of another organisation, please have this information available.
    ·                     To
assist you with your inventory, the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit (MAPs), a free software program, is available for download. This tool can securely assess IT environments of up to 100,000 PCs. It is available at www.microsoft.com/map
I trust that the above information is clear however, should you have any further queries, then please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
So I've downloaded the MAP software and installed it on a Windows 7 machine. Ran a scan and it shows the machines on our LAN. How do I get the info MS actually need like Microsoft Office licenses
    is use for example?

In regards to licensing, it is important to make the distinction that MAP is just a data collection tool and does not determine compliance. Licensing is mostly about documentation and you can use MAP to help compare what it finds to what you have for license
documentation. If you have any issues with using MAP or generating reports, then we can help, but for questions about licensing, you will need to direct those questions to the licensing professional you are working with.
There isn’t any one report that will give you everything you need for the audit, since the information required can vary. Here are some of the more common ones that you can use; I will try to break them into groups. All of these reports can be generated from
each scenario's detail page, most of which are found under the Usage Tracking scenario group.
    For Windows operating systems:
You can use the reports found in the Active Devices and Users and Windows Volume License scenarios. The Active Devices and Users report has additional columns at the end if you need to make notes about machines, such as development vs. production machines,
machines that are still in Active Directory but no longer exist, etc. The Windows Volume License scenario requires that remote PowerShell is enabled on all of the applicable client machines.
    For applications installed:
There is not a report built into MAP that gives detailed break outs by machine, but directions for exporting the data manually into Excel can be found in
this blog post. If you are only interested in summary information, you can find this report in Environment > Windows Environment.
The Microsoft Office suites discovered can be seen in any of the Office feature scenarios that are in the "Desktop" scenario group. Even though these reports are created from the perspective of helping someone plan their migration/upgrade to a certain version
of Office, it can also be used to see which Office Suites/products are installed on each machine.
For software servers (SQL, Exchange, etc.):
View their respective summary pages under the Usage Tracking scenario group.
    For CALs:
To get Windows Server, SQL Server, and SharePoint Server CAL info you need to enable logging on the supported servers and then import and parse those logs after they have been collecting the data for long enough. We recommend 90 days but you can work out the
amount of logging that will be acceptable with your licensing professional. As you might imagine, this is a more involved process that is detailed in
this TechNet Wiki article. Exchange, SCCM, and Forefront Endpoint Protection will have data without importing logs.
It has been my experience that the licensing people are willing to work with you on what machines should be counted. I’m not sure what documentation they may need, but I would certainly ask what is and isn’t necessary.

  • N95 autofocus problem software related

I've had an N95 for more than a year. Part of the reason I bought it was the 8 GB - could take lots of pictures and video. I'm very disappointed. For reference, I am an eye doctor. I know a lot about prescribing glasses, I know optics, and I have done quite a lot of photography.
As with most cameras, the N95 "take picture" key may be partly depressed to get the focus, then fully depressed to actually take the picture. (Auto mode.) It then takes sharp pictures, if lighting conditions are right, and the phone is held steadily.
It can focus on everything from 20 cm or so to infinity. (Try partly depressing the button, you'll see the picture go in and out of focus, then fix on the sharpest setting.) (With some of the other modes, EG landscape, the focus is "fixed," IE, the camera does not try to autofocus, and you can take pictures a lot quicker.)
So - the fact is established - the N95 hardware is capable of mechanical focussing, and some of its software can also detect which focus setting is the best. So it is not "handicapped" from birth. It should be possible to do something sensible with it. However, it behaves as a gifted child with an attitude problem. "No, mommy, I don't WANT to do homework!" (It's not that the homework is too hard.)
However, there are three big problems:
    1) In "landscape" mode, the focus is not on infinity, it is closer. Thus, pictures of faraway objects taken in this mode are not sharp.
    2) The most vexing. When in video mode THE FOCAL LENGTH IS FIXED - and cannot be adjusted. Mine is sharp at 30-50 cm, but out of focus at distance. It SHOULD BE SHARP AT INFINITY! Who's interested in filming stuff at 30 cm distance? I cannot express with a keyboard alone how annoyed I've been. Sometimes I've put my eyeglasses (I'm nearsighted) over the lens, and the video becomes a lot better.
    3) There is no way to adjust focus "manually," even though it should be technically possible.
So, spare me the condescending stuff about image compression, light conditions etc. **bleep**! And, YES, of course I have set the "video quality" to "TV high quality." Doesn't help. THE PROBLEM IS PURELY OPTICAL! Otherwise my eyeglasses would not help. No, they don't enlarge the image, they just help the focus. (And, no, you cannot borrow my glasses )
I've seen a lot of other discussions about this issue with the N95. None of them seem to give a good answer. Neither have I found a way of taking charge over the focal length. So, my questions are:
    *    Has Nokia come up with a solution? Has anyone who has sent the N95 in for service actually gotten some help?
    *    Is there some other software one can install that can do a better job than the **bleep** cam software of Nokia?
    *    Is it possible to hack or tweak the existing software to change the set points for video? (I assume it goes into a mode like this: "Set focus at 034, resolution at VGA" etc. The "034" (a totally random number, not related to anything) doesn't fix on infinity. Could I hack the setting so that it goes "Set focus at 015, resolution at VGA"? (Of course, one would have to change numbers a couple of times to get it right.)
The N95 promised so much, but delivers so little (the camera is not the only problem), it is giving me an ulcer. Next  time I'm not really motivated to get a Nokia! I want revenge. Apple, can you make me happy?

Just a little addon - yes, I have the latest software / firmware updates installed.

  • Trying to upgrade N95 from Maps v2.0 to Maps v3.0

I have an N95 with device software v31.0.017 and I the latest update to the Nokia PC Suite v7.1.30.9. I have downloaded Setup_Nokia_Maps_Updater_1.0.8.exe and installed it on my PC. When I run the program it cannot find the N95 connected via USB.  PC Suite however shows that it is connected and it can be synced etc.. The download maps application in the suite was updated yesterday but now no longer works with my v2.0 maps software on the N95.Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong :-) I have been back over everything several times and I can't see it.  Thanks,  Stuart
If at first you don't succeed, try again. Then quit. There's no use being a damn fool about it.
    -- W.C. Fields

Deleting the cities folder and the qf file made no difference. I am trying to update the application - not install it from new. This should be a simple process you would think but it seems to be defeating others as well as me. The question is this: if the other applications can see that the N95 is connected via USB why then can this updater program not see it? I cannot see that the existance of v2.0 map data can be relevant. Can anybody who knows this particular piece of software give me any clues or point me to an updated version?
    Many thanks,
    Stuart - G3SNA

  • N95 Missing Map Data

I have just upgraded my N95 to the latest firmware and to the latest mapping software. I have also updated the Map Loader to the latest version. I then deleted all the maps from my N95 using the Map Loader software and (apparantly) successfully loaded maps from England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France and Germany.
The problem is that when I try to use the maps only the high level roads and features are there. When I connect to the web, I can see MB's of data steaming down to fill in the missing bits. Likewise, there are no routes and these have to be downloaded in real time.

Well Nokia own Navteq now so i would just keep on reporting it until they get their finger out.

The error message "unable to update the software" will appear.
    I have version 12.0.013.
Come with ideas, I have contacted Nokia's support and they want me to send the phone to them but it may be the final solution.

  • What do you get on the free maps software

when you first buy a nokia n95 8GB which i may do i need to know what you can do with the free gps not the premium. can you locate your possition and track your self to a destination of your choice, is there a postecode search and does it show your possition on a map in real time whilst on the move?

Maps is little more than a digital atlas that will also find you GPS position and a place or point of interest. Any notion of planning a route to that place and navigating that route needs the licence.

  • Activating map software without internet - 6210 Na...

Hi, I have just been given a 6210 Navigator as replacement for my company phone.
I want to try out the Maps software - apparently according to the box there is a 6mth integrated license included.  Problem is my company do not allow any data connections at all, hence, when I try to load the software / maps, I get asked to go online to validate but cant.
I have used the nokia maps updater and uploader software to put the latest versions on with the hope it would check the validation for me but nope, still wants to go online via the phone, and as far as I can see you cannot connect via pc suite and use my laptops internet connection?!?
    Any help greatly appreciated.....
    Mick.

Problem is the 6210 hasn't got wifi.
The only solution may be to get it activated at a Nokia Care Point or use someone elses sim to activate the license and then contact Nokia Care to have the license changed back to your own sim card.

  • Mapping software/website for 8120 Pearl

Hi, I'm wondering what the best mapping software or website is for the 8120 Pearl.  I'm talking about something like a Google maps application, I don't need GPS.  I do have the Google maps mobile software but it requires A LOT of data transfer.  Is there anything else out there that is less data-intensive and has good coverage in Canada?  Thanks a lot.

Most of them require GPS. Google Maps is a good one that doesn't, as it allows the cell tower location service to find you.
