  • N96 OTA Update

I have an original N96, never been upgraded.  I haven't had any major problems with the phone (quite a few minor ones) and wanted to wait for a few Firmware updates, before I took the plunge and updated.  I just did a OTA check and my phone did download an update.
I of course intend to make a full backup before running the update, but just wanted to check if anyone else has done an OTA update and whether they lost any information or data off their phone.  Just to give me an idea of the time I will have to spend getting things back to the way they were....
    Cheers

I have done 3 OTA updates on my N96 and they all worked seamlessly with no loss of data whatsoever.
However, you should still take all the necessary precautions and do all the backups. We don't want to tempt Murphy's Law.
OTA is the only way to go and I am sure you will agree once you've tried it.
    Good Luck with the update.

  • N96 Firmware Updates

I have got N96 today and I want to update the firware from v12 to v20 but FOTA says v30 is available, please any help about this cuz under v30,the feature is supported.I prefer v20 to 30

Unfortunately, you cannot pick and chose which firmware to update to. Nokia suite or FOTA will only offer the latest available version for you to update to.

  • N96 V20 Update: Connection Lost during OTA update ...

Ok, I decided to update my N96 thru OTA this time. I chose "Check for New Updates" from the phone's menu but while checking if there was a new update, the phone told me "the connection was lost!" with the WLAN modem.
I am now little concerned about using OTA. What happenes if this happens right in the middle of "updating process?"
I wanted to try NSU but this time NSU said the latest firmware was still "V12". No luck there either. I guess V20 isn't widely available around the world yet, or is it?
I don't think NSU would tell me that there was no V20 available yet, where there really was.
By the way, my phone is purchased directly from Nokia (unbranded, no operator branded.)

The update may not be available on NSU yet for your product code
One of the cool things about updating OTA rather than via NSU i sthat if the connection is lost, not only does it not crater the phone, but you get the option to resume your download from where it left off rather than the begining

  • N96 Firmware update

I am aware that a new firmware has been released by Nokia for the N96. However i am not able to get hold of it yet. I have a UK Vodafone phone & contract.
1.Can you advise how i can install this new firmware?
    2. Will it address the various problems such as:
    a) software crashes and freezing,
    b) phone reboots itself for no reason,
    c) GPS location is not always possible, but when i use google maps on the phone my location is found
    d) Music player will cause the phone to shutdown if you use it for more than 60minutes
    e) battery feels warm when several applications are running or you are doing anything continuously for more than 15 minutes
    3) is it possible i can download the firmware via your website and install it myself?
    4) will i need to unlock the phone to get the update now?
I have had the N95, N95 8GB and now N96 phones. Sadly they all failed to live up to the hype of matching the power of the IPhone, which i am reluctant to buy. If i cant get hold of the firmware and i still have the software glitches then i may be forced to become another Apple IPhone fan.
Like most people here we just want a good phone that can do all that you claim it can do.

hi there Smurph, read this informative article written by one of our senior users Grischnon: http://linux.sgms-centre.com/nokiafaq/branded-phones/ i'm afraid what Post007 was trying to say always comes out rather muddled, so i will explain it in short for you.
Nokia provides the firmware to Vodafone and other operators usually before the generic firmware (or what others call de-branded; unbranded) is released via NSU or FOTA by Nokia. it is then up to Vodafone to modify the firmware to their tastes, or if they don't wish to then they won't. if the firmware is modified by Vodafone it becomes branded firmware and is given back to Nokia who will then distribute it through NSU or FOTA for the specific product codes for that firmware (i.e. product codes will be for the Vodafone variants of the N96). this is why Vodafone tell you to go to the Nokia website to update your phone, no operators actually handle the update processes themselves. another reason they tell you this is to divert the blame to Nokia, and Vodafone not accept resposibility for the laziness/poor attitude taken by their programmers to put out updated firmware for their phones. or excuses for why they firmware is so crippling. so in essence, they're not really being truthful, yes. it's not really Nokia's fault in this case, its often Vodafone's.
i'm unsure if you can get out of your contract as Vodafone probably has all the jargon to cover themselves for their inadequacies. by preying on the customers lack of knowledge, they suck more unsuspecting customers in to make more money. this should answer your question pretty well.
please throw some kudos our way, it would mean a lot to us
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!

  • N96 firmware updated for vodafone1

VF have at long last released their crippled version of v11 firmware.
    N96 - RM247
    current 10.065
    update 11.018
even though its cripled etc - this is just the software overlay - the os enhancements are needed - get it

i have to agree with psychomania, the suit is just a fancy GUI that links all of the independent launchers together, when you click on the updater icon is just finds the core updater icon in the install directory and runs it, just like clicking on the shortcut icon on your desktop and running the updater like that ! although i have just checked and it seems to be working as you have said so i will let you of for this one

  • N96 - V20 update - lost connection - failed update

    Hey Guys
I'm trying to upate my n96 to v20 and after the download through NSU it looses connection, the phone reboots but NSU goes to recovery then says it's failed to update.  I've done the 3 button reset, re-installed PC and NSU but no joy. Is there anything I can do?

    pedro74 wrote:
Any ideas why I keep loosing connection on NSU? It's allowing the download but when it says '15 mins remaining' it looses connection with the phone.  It's at exactly the same point each time????????????
    Hi pedro74
Once downloaded it is stored locally temporarily so doesn't keep downloading. When you say that you have un-installed PC Suite + NSU, I am concerned that corrupt registry keys will now preclude a satisfactory installation here.

  • N96 firmware updats on a Mac or Windows 7?

Iv got firmware v12 and would like to update the firmware to v30 on my N96, touble is there seems to be no support to do this on a mac or windows 7???
I even installed a virtual xp os on both systems, but in both cases the phone is detected and works fine running PC Suite......but in both it fails to detect the N96 when running the nokia updater?
also using the phones upade option though *#0000# fails as it says no updates avalable from Nokia.

Have you checked that v30 is available for your product code, http://www.nokia.co.uk/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-software-update/can-i-updat...
I've heard that some people have managed to get NSU working under Win7, there are a few threads in the SW updates section if you want to search
You could also  take the phone to a nokia care point and have them do the update

  • N96 after update V30

    Hey all
I updated my N96 and now it wont start...
I turned on the phone and the screen goes white (as it should be)
but after 2 seconds it goes blank.. But the navigation keys are still light
    Any suggestions?

Have a look at the link below and see if any of the other suggestions help. If not then I'm afraid your only alternative is to send it to a Nokia Care Point.

  • Nokia n96 software update not complete, and now my...

after trying to update my nokia n96 firmware , via nokia suite, my phone goes idiot and when i power on my phone , it slow down so much, and screen freezes ! i've tested it, if i flip my phone and take it away to go to stand by screen, then flip on screen, now i see everything is right ,but if going to menu, it freezes and should to wait to display off and again press any key to display goes on and show me menu! and any work in my phone that change the screen, done with off/on screen to shows ! what happen to my phone ?!

First, Try re-installing the Firmware thru' Nokia Suite.
Else, Back-up all your data thru' Nokia Suite and Soft Reset the phone by dialing *#7370# followed by 12345 (default code unless changed by you..) when prompted. After the reset re-install the Firmware  if necessary..
Be warned that this Reset will erase all dta from the Phone memory. You need to restore the data and MAY have to re-install a few applications.

  • Nokia N96 - Problem Updating Music library

Hi, I have transferred some music to my N96 and I am now trying to Update my library to show the new tracks. I have done this lots of times without a problem but today I had it refreshing for 2 hours and it didnt change off the refreshing screen. I have tried stopping it and taking my battery out and still no joy.

Since posting this problem I have been able to use the Music Player quite normally.
The problem and solution, I believe, lie in the way that Nokia's proprietary software (in the case of Macs this is Nokia Multimedia transfer) organises music files.
Nokia Multimedia Transfer organises music into folders named A-Z (and 0-9 if applicable) by artist on the phone. It also truncates folder and file names - folder names seem to be truncated to 13 characters and file names to 9 - fortunately, ID3 tags are not affected.
Any attempt to subvert this hierarchy will result in an incomplete scan of the music library. As Nokia and other methods result in completely different file structures it is necessary to remove all previously synched music from the phone and making a clean sync using Nokia's software.
Additionally, I discovered that as I was trying to synchronise multiple media (music, photos, videos, bookmarks) the whole process would become kind of stuck - that's why I tried alternative methods of synchronising my music. I have completely given up on all other media synchronisation for the sake of getting the music sorted out.
This isn't ideal but at least it works and it saved me from jumping up and down on my phone in shear cartoon frustration!

  • Nokia N96 Firmware Update issues!!!!

    Hello,
On the website, it's showing an update named  PR1.1 (or  11.018 / 11.101) however, after I updated my phone (via PC Suite) it's now showing: Software Version: 30.033.098.1.
More than this, now I have an issue. When I try to launch LIVE TV, it doesn't open no matter what. It's trying to open and then closes itself. Before, with the older firmware 20.xxxxx it at least allowed me to search for TV or something but now it's not working at all.
Can someone please explain why does the new firmware update is showing 30.033.098.1 and not the PR1.1 or 11.011/.101 and why I'm unable to go through the LIVE TV now?
    Many thanks for your advices/suggestions.
    Best Regards,
    Mr A

You could try talking to him about his problem rather than just telling him to reset his phone, and if you are just going to cnp the same response in every thread you reply to then at least format it so it is readable
In this casre I agree a Hard reset is probably called for as his issue is not standard for an n96 running v30
v20 & 30 are typicaly very stable  with very little difference to the user between them, the one change the user will notice is that the mobile tv ap appears to have been messed with, tho being as most users can't recieve anyway Its not something that is looked at often
If a hard reset doesn't fix your problem then come back and tell us
    and remeber BACK UP FIRST

  • Nokia N96 software update

How do i update my N96 i am having problems with most programs not to run including Nokia Messaging Email, Skype etc. The phone is slow i tried resetting the phone but still no change, my software or firmware is bad. Help!

You will not find any update for this more than 5 year old device. If you have never updated it, you may try your luck by following the procedure mentioned HERE .
You may check if you get the 'Re-install' option as seen in the attachment.
BTW, what Reset did you try ? Was it only a Factory reset or a soft reset by dialing *#7370# ? If you have not tried the later, first back-up all your data as the reset will erase all the data from the phone memory. Then dial the code mentioned followed by 12345 (Default security code unless changed by you..) when prompted.. Then see the difference ..

  • N96 firmware update - product code starting 057

I've recently bought an unbranded, sim-free n96. The product code is 0573063. I've tried for weeks to try and update the firmware in the hope that this will solve some of the speed issues I am experiencing. I understand that network branded phones need to wait for the network to approve the firmware but why can't I update my phone? I've tried both NSU and FOTA and neither work.
    Can anyone please help?
    Details
    Product code : 0573063
    Firmware : 10.065
    Type RM-247
    Cheers
