N96 GPS use in Egypt

Dear All,
Yesterday I purchased my Nokia N96 from the Nokia dealer where I live in Cairo, Egypt (I have to state that my country along with Syria and North Korea are the only 3 countries in the world that does not allow the GPS mobiles). At the same time all the previous models like N95, N95 8GB (which I also own) and N82 are available in the black market in Cairo without Nokia warranty.
Any ways, the N96 is available now in Egypt through the authorized Nokia dealer with a note on the phone box mentioning that the GPS is disabled on these units as it was manufactured only to be used in Egypt.
As an advanced user, I knew that most of the modern mobiles processors contains the GPS as an integrated part of the processor and I assume that N96 is no exception (it use a dual ARM 9 processor with 332MHz Clock Rate).
So I came up to a conclusion that if Nokia wants to sell this phone legally in Egypt through the authorized dealer and according to the governmental rules it will disable the GPS using a software to block the GPS Comm. Port not by eliminating the GPS as Hardware, (a year ago HTC did the same thing when the Tytn II (Windows Mobile) was introduced to the Egyptian market but I solved this problem within 1 week after I purchased it on December 2007 by flashing the phone ROM with the help of a very friendly Web site for the Tytn II fans, they offered the original English ROM that upon installation freed up the GPS Comm. Port then in a separate folder they offered the Arabic Language files that enables the users in our region to read, write SMS and e-mail in Arabic)
So, is there any available way to do the same thing to my new N96? I tried Nokia Software Update but I got a message stating that I have the latest software version for my region)
Current mobile details:
SoftwareVersion: 11.018
Date: 13.9.2008
Custom Version: 11.018.098.1
Language Set: 010
RM-247
Thank you for your kind help and sorry for bothering with this long letter but I have to tell the story as it is.

the GPS was the reason why the 6110 navigator was never offcially released in Egypt. with the N96 a solution was found to disable the GPS in order to be able to sell it.
unfortunately, trying to change the phone to enable such a feature will also void your warranty, and i echo grschinon's words regarding this.
i think you have invested a good amount of money in this phone to void the warranty doing this.
Fear not those who argue but those who dodge

  • N96 - GPS local maps and voice guided navi for 3 m...

I see on the box of the N96 :
"Including local maps and voice-guided navigation for three months"
So after 3 months there is no local maps and voice ?
    Why that ?
Even a cheap GPS at 100 euros has maps and voice forever
I dont understand. I have paid the phone and his features or not ?

I have to disagree with you there.
The system is designed to suit all users, not just those that use the phone for navigation in the car. Plus many people won't use the phone for navigation but will use it as an interactive map book.
Also with all the new and upcoming location based services that nokia now offers it is very important to have up-to-date maps.
If we had to pay for map updates then many of the location based services wouldn't be accurate or worth using.
So for a phone based navigation program it makes much more sense to get free maps. Obviously they have to recoup the map costs from somewhere so they have to charge for the navigation feature.
For dedicated in car sat-nav systems such as tom toms then it makes sense for them to give you the navigation for free. They make their money by charging you for new maps and maps for other countries.
So in some ways nokia's system is better because you have maps of most of the world totally free. It's also the only system that could suit the majority.
At the end of the day no one is forcing you to use nokia maps either. If you don't like it then install a program like garmin XT. This program is like in car sat-navs where navigation is free but you pay for maps. A very expensive option if you travel to many countries.

    Hello,
Can someone who already has the N96 tell me if the rumor that the GPS works even with the slide closed (compared to N95 which didn't) is true?
    Thanks,

  • N96 GPS Chip - Possible to remove and reuse?

    Hi,
My N96 has died, and am looking to get another phone - found the N96 too slow to bother repairing. However I was thinking about taking it apart and trying to use the GPS chip.
    1) Is this possible? - I've not looked inside yet
    2) Does anyone know what chip it uses - is it easy to reuse?
    Thanks
    Mark

Thanks for this, though after looking at it I'm not too inclined to use an app that requires getting into the terminal. Way too technical for me. But thanks.

  • N96 gps "power saving"

Ok, after updating my n96 to 12.043, I've noticed that the gps seems to go inactive, whenever the application that uses the gps loses focus - very annoying when trying to use applications like sports tracker!
Does anyone know if this is an intended feature, a setting that can be changed (I've looked, but found nothing) or a bug?
I've tried it in both power saving and none power saving mode and it seems to have the same effect! Makes the sports tracker pretty much useless as it is then unable to recover and regain the gps position

The main issue I have when using Sports Tracker is where to place the phone without it losing signal from the satellites. The GPS receiver in the phone is low powered and so does not need much of an excuse to lose the signal from the satellites.
For optimum reception, the phone should preferable be uncovered. It normally works from an external pocket but internal pockets are difficult. In wet conditions I would normally use it with my external bluetooth GPS receiver to allow me to keep my phone dry and snug in an internal pocket. A waterproof pouch is also a good idea.

  • N96 GPS & Nokia Maps

Can someone please tell me how to use the N96 built-in GPS and also the Nokia Maps?? Also when using the GPS, would I use my sim-card credit??

Well first of all u will have to find out whether the country u live in is available in nokia maps. If its available u have to install the map to the phone. If u use the phones in-built GPS system u will not b charged.

  • How much data does Assisted GPS use

    Guys
I'm planning a trip into Europe, we will of course be taking a TomTom, but in the event that I need OVI maps, could you tell me how much data AGPS uses.
O2 charge £6.00 per mb, so I don't want to come home and find a massive bill waiting for me.

Usually when I try to use it, I use about 6-15mb per fix. It doesnt use A-GPS again after getting a fix unless satellite signals fail.

  • GPS Use - How do I get around the security

I have two projects. Both don't work due to security restrictions.
One is the media for midi use.
The other uses the GPS in my phone.
This is strictly for personal use.
How do I get around this? Any help would be nice.

As far as I know, the only way to go around security restrictions is to have you application sigend by Verisign, Thawte, JavaVerified, etc.

  • Has anyone worked with communicating with a Garmin GPS using their protocol?

I need to obtain current position (lat/long/elev) and Waypoint data from a Garmin GPSmap 76CS using the Garmin protocol. Read only, I do not need to write. Any help would be appreciated.

I have attached a series of vis that I use to retrieve the waypoints from a Gecko Garmin gps. I think it should work with a 76CS model, although Garmin has the bad habit to change the data format quite often...
I also have some utilities to convert to UTM coordinates. Ask if you need them.

  • Upload other maps to Nokia N95 for GPS use

As you all know (I hope you do) Nokia maps does not supply maps for Bolivia, yes, I live in a big, but small country in the heart of South America.
Yesterday, a Garmin local representative offered me a copy (legal copy) of Bolivian maps ($20 per city).
Does anybody knows what format should I ask, and how to upload the maps, if possible, in order to use them with my N95 GPS Maps App???

If u want the map for Maps software in installed in ur N95
then it is useless because the only way to upload a map to ur mobile is by using Nokia Map Loader software.
try to get TomTom or route66 .

  • How can I find exhaustive explanations on GPS use ...

    Hi everybody,
I just bought a 5800 (X-Music). To tell you the truth I did not have any problem in dowloading  the maps and establishing a first  GPS lock.  For the time being I use the set off-line (no SIM card inserted). Since I have a flat internet connection at home (Wifi)  I also managed to set-up e.mail and go to internet . In other words all functions, that require an internet link, work fine with my home wifi.
What worries me is that when I will eventually use the set on-line (I do not have a flat data  profile with my  provider) I could be caught  into dowloading lots of Mb traffic spending a fortune. For the time I have excluded the A-GPS (Only Integrated is ON).
    My questions are :
How can I make sure that using the phone outside my home I do not get linked to internet  using GPS  or other features ?
What are the GPS limitations that I will face with in this case (i.e. not using any internet link)?
Thank you for any suggestion / hint

Make sure that your "Destinations" does not include your phone provider's internet connection is either not present (i.e. delete it a destination so that it can never be used at all), or if you decide to leave it for use as a last resort (as I do), then make sure it is the lowest priority of all your destinations.  In addition, modify its settings so that it is set to "always ask" when used, and set your WiFi to "automatic."
Now I know you are asking about Maps, but there are apps that will not check with you - e.g. Nokia messaging 10.2 (will use your 3G automatically), Opera Mobile, if you say "default" connection, may use your 3G, Video Center may need to be configured for your WiFi connection, etc.  In short, examine each app that you plan to use, that requires a net connection, and examine it's settings & make sure it prefers your WiFi connection.  You may want to check/search for previous posts in the Connectivity forum.
As for Maps, make sure you don't set it to log in automatically on startup, and set search to offline search & finally, pre-download any maps you think you may need using Map Loader.  You should be all set.

  • Does GPS use the internet data connection?

    Hi everyone,
I'll be using a German iPhone while traveling all over the world. The data connection is free within Germany (in other words, flat-rate internet) but quite expensive out of the country, 49 euro cents per 50kb block when I'm in the US, for example... I was hoping to use the GPS/map function a lot, but I'm afraid this will be expensive...
Does the GPS/map function actually use the internet connection, for which I'll be charged per 50kb block?
Or is GPS a separate kind of connection?
I was hoping to just casually surf the web while traveling on trains across the globe, but I guess that would be a very expensive pastime...
    Thanks!
    Alexandra

There is no charge for accessing GPS, but maps data is not stored locally on the iPhone. When using the Maps application, all maps data is downloaded from the internet - via an available wi-fi network you have access to, or via the cellular network. You can access GPS alone without a wi-fi or cellular connection, but it won't do you much good without any maps data.

  • Synchronize 2 PXI Systems through GPS using PXI 6552

I want to synchronize two PXI systems separated by a distance of 5kms through GPS.
PXI 6682 is a timing and synchronization card which can be used to achieve this. I also have a requirement to use PXI 6552 HSDIO in my application. Few channels in PXI 6552 are free. So i want to know if it is possible to achieve GPS Synchronization of the two PXI systems using PXI 6552.
    Regards,
    Sundar Ganesh

    Hi Ryan,
This is a system configuration which i am doing for a requirement. The requirement is RF Generation in one PXI system and RF Acquisition in another PXI system separated by a distance of 2kms. The applications that will be running at both these PXI systems may be started at different times. So i am thinking of using a PXI card in both the chassis to synchronize them through GPS.
Regarding this, i have already contacted the local NI FSE and together with him only we have decided to go ahead with PXI 6552 for GPS Synchronization. But i started doubting the usage of 6552 for GPS synchronization when i couldnt see the card in the list of Timing and Synchronization cards.
I have attached a schematic of the configuration. Let me know which PXI card should be used for synchronising these two systems.
    Regards,
    Sundar

  • LOCATION FINDING without using GPS using J2ME (in gsm network)

I was wondering if it is possible for me to obtain the ID (name) of the tower my phone is communicating with using J2ME (in a GSM network). I`m developing for T610. The cell info display shows the name of the tower. Is there any way i can get that text into my java program? I`ve seen Nokia apps do it, but they are C++ apps.. Is the same thing possible with J2ME?

    Hi,
Yes it is possible. Try to use receive CBS messages it will give you the location name. And moreover there are some handset model specific that you have to use. I was successful in doing the same for motorola devices.
    System.getProperty("IMSI")
    System.getProperty("CellID")
    System.getProperty("LocAreaCode")
This will give you imsi, cellid and location area code and then try to receive cbs messages that will give you the location.
It has been successfully implemented on motorola device
    Bye
