N96 on 3 in the U.K

Has anyone on 3 managed to update to software version 11 yet?,i am being seriously messed about by 3,currently on my 2nd N96 due to various faults,i have attempted to hand the phone back in exchange for a different model but they wont accept it,i am now 3 months int a new contract with my second handset which is away for more repairs as i type this message!!!
I think handset 3 will be here for xmas, what a joke 3 are, they appear to think that v11 is the fix of all fixes,if thet was the case why are Vodafone charging into the distance with v12.5 ???

The only solution is to buy a handset SIM-free direct from Nokia (some retailers such as CPW for example have their own product codes and you end up in the same position as with a network-branded phone).
Yes, it's much more expensive but you know what you're paying for. The upshoot is that your contract can be considerably cheaper if you don't get a (crippled) handset with it.

  • New BH-905i on N96 fades every 11s the music for 1...

Yesterday I received my new BH-905i (the batteries were fully charged overnight) which was easy to pair with my N96 (SW 30.033.098.1). But when listening to music from my 8GB microSD, the sound fades completly every 11s for 1s and then comes back for 11s to do the same on and on. This does not happen when listening wired. Also streaming the same music from N96 through Blutooth in my car works with no problems. Is the new BH-905i defect or is this a known problem?

If the headset appears to be faulty (and it does) either return it for repair/replacement or ask for a refund. I've heard nothing but good reports about it and would assume your headset is faulty !

    Read http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/3.2/configuration/guide/c32mint.html#wp1153947
A zero value for the VLAN identifier (on the Controller > Interfaces page) means that the interface is untagged.
The default (untagged) native VLAN on Cisco switches is VLAN 1. When controller interfaces are configured as tagged (meaning that the VLAN identifier is set to a non-zero value), the VLAN must be allowed on the 802.1Q trunk configuration on the neighbor switch and not be the native untagged VLAN.
Cisco recommends that only tagged VLANs be used on the controller. You should also allow only relevant VLANs on the neighbor switch's 802.1Q trunk connections to controller ports. All other VLANs should be disallowed or pruned in the switch port trunk configuration. This practice is extremely important for optimal performance of the controller.

  • BBC IPlayer vodafone N96 were abouce is the app

I cannot find the bbc iplayer application on my N96 can any one help please ??????

Corrected the subject 'coz I didn't have a clue what you were on about until I read the question.
The iPlayer isn't always pre-installed on the N96. You need to download it from the BBC's website.
Point your N96's browser to http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/ using a wifi connection.

  • Issues with the Nokia N96????

Im currently on a contract with THREE network here in england. I am due my upgrade, and I was planning to go from the N95 to the N96 - on paper it looks like an awesome handset.
Ive been into my network suppliers shop today to ask about the N96, and was warned by the manager in the shop that Nokia have ceased shipping these handsets to them due to complaint and problems with the processor on the handset.
Ive been warned by several people that the handset is very slow, freezes up when performing anything demanding, or even when trying to find a file on the handsets internal memory and thats its just not fast enough.
The manager in the Three shop told me that there is an issue with the processor not being powerful enough for the phone, and the amount of memory the phone has. He also said that software teams across most UK networks were working around the clock on a software update to paper over the cracks, but he reckoned that this wouldnt fix the problem completely, as the chip is just not up to scratch full stop.
I just wanted to find out how true everything he is saying actually is. I know first hand from people I know who own them that this handset is infact really quite slow, and Im now put off owning one at all. If there is someone in the know actually from Nokia reading this, your replies would be appreciated I really want this phone and have done since I heard about it, but Im not prepared to risk signing a new 18 month contract with my network, and then end up with a handset which is not fit for purpose!
    Cheers

The N96 as shipped with the v10 firmware had major issues.
The v11 update fixed most of these and the v12 was a further improvement.
Your shop manager is lost about what is happening with the firmware. The networks themselves don't write it or fix problems, instead nokia provides them with the updates and they alter them with there own network branding, add apps etc. before allowing Nokia to make it available to those who hold there branded handsets, some of these alterations have made the problems worse.
Because it takes the networks time and money to do this to every firmware patch they are sometimes slow to release or don't release at all.
Note that it is rumoured that Nokia are working on the v20 update but no release date has even been rumoured yet

  • Why is the N96 not compatible with DVB-T for the U...

Just a bit dissapointed to find out that the digital reciever for the N96 will not be compatible for use in the uk as we use dvb-t but the phone is only compatible with dvb-h. Is this true or is a bunch of lies spread by the darkside? or is more the truth that it wont be of much use untill the swith off of analogue in 2012?. The phone looks brilliant but the tv function was a big selling point especially over the new i-phone and other pretenders. Is there no way the tv tuner can be made to recieve dvb-t signals through software changes for example.

To me this is a much better feature than DVB-H because you can comfortably watch on the move. DVB-H just like DVB-T isn't very good whilst moving.
That's totally inaccurate. I've used DVB-H both in an N92 and N96 and while in the train or in a taxi and it works really well. Of course if you get out of coverage it will say "No signal" then once you move to signal area it will continue. But while moving within the coverage area it works really well.
So I'll have to disagree with you on this one.

  • Nokia N96 - A long review!

The Nokia N96 Long Review by Jupstejuho
    v. 1
(Please notice that this is the first published version so I will
be making this much longer a bit later if you just want me to do so)
In this case I have only reviewed the phone's main software
things, not many of its good-too features.
    --> A BIT INFO -->
Firmware used: Unbranded Scandinavian v11, upgraded to that from v10 wich was originally branded
Phone used: Elisa Finland network branded, simlocked Nokia N96-1
    Operator used: Elisa Finland
Memory card used: 512MB (have not actually even touched it as the 16GB has been fine for me
More settings used: Screen brighness set to full 100%, display light set to disappear after
30 seconds of inactivity, Online mode always on. Screensaver set to none.
    1. THE FIRST WORDS
OK, as all of the active Nokia people around the internet already know, there
are many reviews in the internet considering about the famous, all-new Nokia
N96 smartphone. It is a new part of the Nokia´s 3rd generation phone series,
the N-Series. The Nokia's N-Series is a quite big group of some really good
phones using much more advanced technology than the previous camera phones
that Nokia, and many other well-known phone companies have made. That is the
Nokia's N-Series in short. But, I am not writing this long review for all you
Nokia-People to just tell you what Nokia N-Series is, you basically did not
come here to read about that. I am writing this because I want to show you
my first feelings about the Nokia N96. I hope you have time to read the whole
    review
    2. ABOUT THE PHONE'S DESIGN, LOOK ETC. ALL ITS OUTSIDE-SEEING THINGS
So let's start from the usually first things that most people want to know
about a phone before buying it, the phone's ergonomy. The Nokia N96 feels
really, really good in my hand. Althought the phone seems to be quite big,
it fits in almost anybody's hands really well. It is not so thick, comparing
to my good old Nokia N91. And that impressed me pretty much. The phone is
relatively wide, but does not weight much (about 120 grams). The phone's
outlook is something I like, it is somehow much like the Apple's iPhone
within its big screen and black'n'white and grey colours. But, I was very
sad when I actually realized the biggest mistake made in the phone's
design. Its outer casing is actually made from cheap plastics, wich leads
to the very unliked feature... The Nokia N96's cheap plastics are in all
only not good-looking, but also really effective fingerprint magnets! The
phone's outer casing takes fingerprints really easily, and you can see
them very well in a bright sunlight, that is something I really hate. But,
that is luckily the only problem on the phone's design, I think. Just that
the phone's front side is quite widely crowded with many buttons. I really
like the phone's frontside's media button, as it reminds me of my good
old Nokia N91's Musicmenu-key. It is surrounded with the play/pause, stop,
forward and backward keys, and the already-known menu key, C-key (also known
as the backspace key) plus the green & red answering keys and the two
softkeys. All this is has been made to fit around the phone's joystick,
wich also had to include the handy Naviwheel option, but they removed it from
the software, wich is sad in my opinion. They have removed the handy
pen-key, wich formerly worked pretty well as a shortcut for many nice
programs that i used to play around with my old Nokia N91, that is sad but
I guess they had a good enough reason for removing the key.
    >>> To the phone itself, features etc.
    3. PHONE'S USER INTERFACE IN ALL
The Nokia N96 uses the same OS that almost all N-Series devices use, the
Symbian S60 3RD. But this time it is not just that. The Nokia N96 is one
of the first phone's to get the new, famous Feature Pack 2 (FP2). A feature
pack is like the "Microsoft Service Pack" for phones. Just that you cannot
upgrade any NON-FP/FP1 device to FP2 unless you really are an employer of
Nokia, and that the Feature Packs are for phones, not for computers
Symbian S60 3RD is the 3rd edition of the famous Symbian OS for phones,
wich has all the features that are required in order to say that a phone
is REALLY a Smartphone. OK, I am now comparing the FP2 Nokia N96 to my old
Pre-FP1/Non-FP1 Nokia N91. The phone's standby screen is pretty much the
same. Just that you can also set the standby screen to be in 3 different
modes. No active standby at all (The old S60 style), the normal already
known active standby row of 6 different program shortcuts and a new
arrangement, the one that is more complicated. It has the icons in the right
side of the phone's standby/idlescreen and you choose the icon and you see
its features at right side. Anyways, I chose the good old S60 3RD arrangement
as it is not too complicated for me. Going to the phone's menu is easy, you
just press the menu-key and that's that. The taskmanager is renewed, this
time it is horizontal and looks better (I guess they have made the idea from
the nice IQ AltTab program wich I used to use with my old Nokia N91. Yeah,
well pretty much nothing has changed. The phone's messages application has
been also renewed... It now has only 2 message types: Text Message and Sound
Message. If you want to send somebody a MMS wich contains a sound clip,
that means you have to choose the Sound Message-option. If you want to send
a normal SMS, or an MMS wich contains picture or video etc, you have to
choose the Text Message-option. Just choose that and write your message.
If you only add text into that, you are sending a normal SMS automatically.
Add any MMS-content in it and it will automatically be an MMS message.
That is a quite nice new feature. The phone also has a new Themes-application
and its icon has been removed from the phone's menu! You can get to it by
setting up an active standby shortcut for it but it will take you straight
to the Active-Standby Themestyle option wich is a part of the Themes
application. The phone still lags pretty much, as it is brand new.
The same problem was with the Nokia N95 when it first came. I guess the
phone does not have so much features that the Nokia N95 does not have.
    Well that's all about that.
    4. MEDIA COMPLETION
The Nokia N96 is advertised as a Videoplayer phone. That is true, but that
was not the reason why I bought the phone. The phone can play MP4, 3GP and
surprisingly they are advertising that the phone can also play WMV9 videos.
That is actually true, but the phone did only play the video's sound, not
the video itself Well that is OK for me as I do not have a reason for
playing WMV videos with my PHONE. The phone can also of course play music
but supports only a little amount of filetypes. Pictures are (surprise,
    surprise) supported too.
    4.1 DVB-H
One of the phone's new main features is the DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting
Handheld) receiver. That means that you can watch digital television wherever
that is available. Here in Finland we can only receive DVB-H signal in the
big cities (luckily I live in Oulu and I can receive DVB-H signal in here...)
But I would be pleased if I could be able to see that signal in places like
cars, trains, planes and ferries but that is not gonna be possible ever,
because only a really small amount of phones have the DVB-H and hardly anybody
watches it. I do not look it unless I have a good reason as it takes a lot
battery. You can also record DVB-H and schedule recordings, that means you
actually have a recording television receiver in your pocket But I do not
have any reasons to do such a thing.
    4.2 VIDEOS
The phone, as I said earlier, is being advertised as a pocket-sized video
player. The phone has some pre-loaded factory videos (Some advertising
videos and 1 Transformers Movie). I tested DivXPlayer and it played
small video files (like 100-200MB) really well but when I tested a 350MB
TV-Series episode, it lagged all the time after playing it for 2 minutes.
I also tested CorePlayer and Smartmovie and they both had the same problems
except that the CorePlayer played the file hardly for 2 seconds and started
lagging. But I converted the same file with SmartMovie converter to a 80MB
file and it had much worse quality but still it played with no lagging at
all You can also convert any video to a .3GP or .MP4 file but I guess
that it is better to play your video files with SmartMovie or DivXPlayer.
The videos captured with the phone's camera are relatively big, a 4minutes
long video with the best possible quality that the camera has, is over
50MB big. Oh, and one more thing: I just also realized that the phone
supports Winamp Remote really well. Just for all of you who are not familiar
with the Winamp Remote: Winamp Remote is an application wich lets you watch
any videos from your computer´s hard drive over an internet connecton with
quite high quality. I tried that and I was amazed that it worked. Althought
you have to put the flash player as default way playing the video, because
it laggs too much when watched using the Real Player. Oh, and that brings
one another thing to my mind: The Nokia's default web browser now also
supports Flash videos I tried youtube and it worked pretty well. And,
as I said earlier the Winamp remote Flash Videoplayer also was able to play
my PC´S videos So, Nokia N96 is good for what it is originally meant for:
PLAYING HIGH-QUALITY VIDEOS ANYWHERE, ANYTIME whenever you need to do so.
    4.3 MUSIC
The phone has music keys and I just love them. But the music player is not
anymore being started automatically when the phone is being started and
that means you have to manually put it on if you want to be able to use
the music buttons for playing music. That sucks. The phone has really nice
stereo speakers and they are very loud and I just love them. The earphones
supplied with the phone are really, I mean REALLY bad. They suck, but with
20-40 € you can get some good earphones like KOSS. They have also removed
an old really nice feature. The phone always lists the newest added music
tracks to a list, but you cannot anymore add the newest tracks easily to
another self-made playlist. That is what I hate as I used to do that with
my old Nokia N91. :@ That sucks, I don´t know why on earth they made such
a change in the Music Player. Quality of the music played with good
earphones is quite amazing. But also playing music eats the battery as fast
as a worm diggs itself into mud, you cannot play the music so long time,
but as I am not a music freeak that does not matter so much to me (I prefer
listening to .XM keygen music with my computer and Logitech speakers) But
I can also listen to Keygen music with the LCG Jukebox, I have done that
once for real at school and I just loved that as it made me more creative
    at the arts lesson
    4.4 PICTURES/CAMERA
The phone has a 5MP camera with a LED flash and a red LED light
to "help" with taking videos The phone takes really good images
especially when the phone's flash is used. It can take amazingly good
pictures even when there is no sunlight at all The flash is really
amazing. I don´t know why, but I even think that it takes better pictures
at night comparing to the pictures taken at daylight. Umm, I guess you
can use the phone as a camera in emergency situations when you need to
be able to take a picture of a good situation. The front camera wich is
intended for Video calls takes really awful pictures when there is not
enough light, especially the videos ARE JUST AWFUL but that is just because
who would use the front camera to take pictures of anything else (just for
testing purposes and taking some stupid images of yourself Um, and yeah I was
surprised about that, but it does not matter at all anymore Taking videos
with the 5MP camera at the back is nice because they have quite good quality!
But they are also relatively big and I guess that is one more feature that sucks,
as the video quality is not too good! One more new and really nice feature is
that you can set the phone to automatically save the location where the picture
was taken into the picture's metadata and view the location in the Nokia Maps
application. Almost all photos that I have took with my phone have a "geotag".
    5. NAVIGATING/GPS
The Nokia N96 also has a GPS receiver with A-GPS support. I was first surprised
that the phone really knows where you are in just 10 seconds or a bit more. But
when I noticed that it is only caused because the phone has A-GPS and I had set
it on. And what is so bad about that? The A-GPS does not know where you are so
specifically, the accuracy in A-GPS is almost everytimes something like 100
meters so using the phone as a navigator is not so good but I guess it is just
fine for me! The phone has 1 year navigating license for the Nokia Maps application
(wich BTW sucks), but I prefer Garmin wich is better in all ways But while I
was testing navigating in the car, it was working fine. When Garmin said that
"waiting for better GPS signal", it only took about 5 seconds for it to already
show me that it had a full signal with 5-10m accuracy! Yum that is going to be
a nice feature because I am going to use it while travelling at Europe next summer.
Navigating is much, much better comparing, for example to the Nokia E90 and
some external Bluetooth GPS receivers. I am pleased that I know that I am always
carrying a really powerful GPS navigator in my pocket, and it is ready whenever
i just need it to be used
    6. N-GAGE/GAMES
Nokia N96 also has pre-installed Tetris and an activation code for that is being
given with the phone (wich BTW WAS NOT WORKING FOR ME!). I installed brothers
in arms AND IT LAGGED LIKE A HELL?! What the hell is the problem with that, they
did not add a 3D Accelerator chip to the phone and they are still advertising
it as a "Good N-Gage gaming phone" Haha, I just shall laugh about that. I guess
I WILL NOT BE USING THE PHONE FOR GAMING THEN. So overall, if you did not already
understand my opinion about the Gaming features in the phone: DO NOT THINK THAT
THE PHONE IS GOOD IN GAMING... Also, tried Vampent´s vNes and it was not able
to start emulating (it was when I tried with my Nokia N91! Well, also the joystick
is a limitation wich makes it nearly impossible to play games with the phone.
It actually isn´t a joystick at all (they do not even advertise it to be that
I liked my old Nokia N91's joystick as it was really nice for playing games! But
playing games like Tetris should be fine. Also I will be going to try playing
games with the numeric keys, maybe that will be fine ;D
    7. THE 16GB MEMORY + SDHC Memory Card place with hotswap support!
Yep, that´s true. I was first really impressed when I heard that the Nokia N96
has a HUGE 16GB memory and also A SDHC memory card spot. That was one of the
main reasons why I really said myself: If I am going to buy a phone, it will
definitely be the Nokia N96 unless something REALLY impressive will become
to the markets. I put my favorite tracks and kept almost all of the factory-loaded
videos in the phone and I still have a bit over 10GB free space (I also took about
hundred photos) not even mentioning that I also have installed Garmin Mobile XT
with all European maps to the phone (also Navicore and TomTom, they just weren´t
working and I was too lazy to be able to remove them or try solving why they
weren´t working) They are advertising that the phone can take up to 40 hours
of good guality video. Yeah that is just amazing and it is true too. Borrowing
to one guy's words who has been showing the N96 prototype at youtube: "So you
really, really have enough space on this phone" That is so true. I just wonder
what the hell I am going to do with all that 10GB left space ;D
    8. A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE BATTERY LIFE
Many have complayed about the Nokia N96 battery life. I cannot understand why!
It has better battery life than in by Nokia N91. Two listed examples by me:
    * I just charged the phone at around 7pm. I went to sleep and the clock was about
10pm. Before that, I decided to put a 1 hour long TV episode to a scheduled
recording. The phone did that very well. And I was surprised that when I looked
at the phone's battery state: It showed me that it had 100% full battery life!
And it kept there until I watched the whole 1 hour episode, then it still had
6 bars left of the 7 bars maxium. Pretty impressive.
    * I put the phone to charge itself a few minutes before I went to sleep.
At morning I went to school. At there I watched TV episodes using Winamp
Remote for about 30-45 minutes. Then I listened to .XM keygen music with
LCG Jukebox for about 2 hours! Also I was playing with the phone a bit more
time too. When I went to home, it had something like 2 or 3 bars left. That
is not a very good example but that is already enough for me, and the
phone has had much better battery life after this case
    ---> [OVERALL REVIEWING] ---
    * The Nokia N96 is a good mediaphone but it is also enough
good to be used as an officephone. The stereo speakers,
DVB-H, GPS and a good camera, 16GB mass memory and a
SDHC memorycard slot... That is just everything I would
ever want from a phone! But all this comes with a price
wich will make most people just dream about the phone,
or buying it from an operator with a cheap price like
I did. Even thought the firmware is buggy, I can still
recommend the phone for anybody who likes to have a
good-looking phone with all possible mediafeatures!
The phone is still buggy but that was with the Nokia N95
too. I cannot understand why people are saying that
"Nokia N95 is soo much better and looks better..." that
is so not true. The N96 beats N95 hands down! And overall,
the phone would be too perfect if it would not have bugs,
all new phones have bugs! Think about the iPhone, it was
not even able to send a MMS message but it has been enabled
in the new firmware update. Also iPhone has been buggy when
it first came but it has been improved much. The same will
100% surely happend with the Nokia N96 too! They already
have released v11 wich has made my phone a bit faster too
+ A big screen with bunch of colours!
+ 5MP camera takes good quality photos
+ GPS finds location fast with the A-GPS feature
    + Really good stereo speakers!
    + Supports WMV
+ The phone is not too thick and it is smaller than N95
+ The phone just looks sooo good!
    + 16GB memory + A SDHC memorycard slot!
+ The phone's 1-9 keys are nice and they can be easily pressed even
thought they are really flat! Writing with the phone is fast
+ The phone just looks so good!
+ DVB-H with scheduled recording and awesome quality!
+ Battery life is just enough!
    - The GPS is fast but mostly not accurate except at outside
    - Music-Player no longer gives an option to add a freshly added
music track to another playlist I have to find all the
freshly added tracks manually from the All tracks-section if
and when I want to add them to a nice playlist
    - The front camera has a really bad picture and video quality
    - The software in the phone still has many bugs
    - A fingerprint magnet & Cheap plastic materials
    - Price!
    - OH, the gaming features just suck

Um, yes I can (BTW, nice that there are other N96 likers too, as I am also very surprised that there are so many haters )
You can get Winamp Remote from here: http://www.winamp.com/player/free-download-full?lang=en-us When you install it, choose Winamp Remote as a part of the installation. You can get more help from the Winamp Forums. Winamp Remote should be easy to use, but if you need more help ask from the Winamp Forums or PM me (One of the main things is that you have to have ports forwarded fine, that is quite hard to explain but go to: www.portforward.com and follow their instructions meant just for your router, I am not sure that do they have instructions just meant for Winamp Remote but if you are lucky enough you just should be able to do the tricks in half an hour )
DivXPlayer is available at here: http://labs.divx.com/system/files/private/DivXPlayer_S60_3rd_0.sisx AND PLEASE NOTE that DivxPlayer takes so much memory that it CANNOT PLAY FILES OVER 200MB. I tried a 150MB DivX .AVI video and it played very well but I tried a 350MB DivX .AVI video and it lagged like a hell. You can use Lonely Cat Games (LCG) SmartMovie to convert about 350MB file to a 80MB file with just fine enough quality. I know that talking about "illegal" things is forbidden in here but just a small tip: Find a good Mobile Phone stuff forum, they are giving some good and CR@CKED applications for free (normally they are asking huge prices for them) There are dozens of good mobile forums just waiting for somebody who needs all that stuff For example the SmartMovie will put the video's image grey after two minutes (if you have converted the video with that tool) of playing it. But just some little googling and you are fine to go But supporting software studios is also important, so if you just have enough money I really suggest that you buy all your softwares!

  • Still ashamed of using 5800, and being the butt o...

Just before posting this message, I saw a few comments about N97, and I can understand exactly the disappointment and frustration these users are, because for the past 4 months, these are the agonies I experienced.
Want to reiterate, over the past 9 years, I only use Nokia phones, impressed with each phone that I change, the functionality, the speed, their thoughtfulness for users, reliability. All until I made the ultimate mistake of changing to a 5800XM
Just want to ask, how did the development of the S60 5th edition go about. Because I still feel that each screen, each module is designed by a seperate person.  What do I mean?
For example, Writing a SMS has a different layout for different language. Writing in English and other language for example, different screen [of course I notice there is only left and right button for English and 'Up down left right' buttons for other languages.  The Green Tick placement is different.
I don't know how other Nokia users feel, but being in an area whereby we do use multiple language to write and reply SMS, this is terribly irritating.
Why am I irritated? Simple reason being, in the other phones [eg 6280], simple, phones give better User Interface [UI], consistent, functional, well thought out. And here suppose to be a new phone, and the functionality has gone back equivalent of 5 years ago.
Guess these modules are written by 2 different person, and they both have never shared on how to improve the module together. Plus I guess the author of these modules come from an area whereby they will only write SMS in one language only and never experience how users need to switch between languages, or even multiple languages within 1 SMS.
I can expect people helping Nokia to explain.. oh.. it's a new software on S60 5 EDITION. Things are new, lots of development needed, untested. What I cannot understand is, even if they just had followed their previous successful formula of UI, what could be wrong? Just because it is a new software, functionality has to suffer a total loss?
Also the excuse of 'oh, you must understand, this is touch based, and it is different'. I find it one of the worst excuse. Touch based means more intuitive. So Why can't it just be the same level of functionality, with only having to touch. Instead, they come up with new formats which they try to be creative with their UI and failed miserably.
Challenge for the dear people at Nokia who did the UI for 5800 [and now N97 I guess since they use the same software].
    1) Select a user in your phonebook and prepare to send him/her a SMS.
    2) Write a SMS in English, but suddenly you need to key in 10 characters in Chinese.
    3) Click on the Green Tick.
    4) Stare hard at the USER name, and can you tell me the mobile number you are sending out to? Do you know you are sending out to the correct number if the user had 2 mobile numbers, one landline number, one office number, one fax number in the phone book. Stare hard and tell me it has never occured to you , you may just need to see the number beside the USER name, just to make sure it is the correct number.
    Challenge 2
    1) Key in your best friend number to send him/her a SMS.
    2) Send out the SMS.
    3) Look at the Sent box.
    4) See your best friend's name? NO!!!!!... you see your best friend's number only? BUt hey, wait a minute.. I also have his number in the PhoneBook. Why do I see the number here?
    5) Oh, of course if I wanted to see the name displayed out, I will have to select his name from the phonebook, select send SMS to him, only then will I see the name displayed in the SENT box.
    6) Yes yes, I can see this is a new feature, because in the other phones, with actual keypads, this has never been seen before. Numbers keyed in are recogznised by the names if they are in the PHONEBOOK list.
    Challenge 3
    1) Select Adaptive Search functionality.
    2) Select on your PhoneBook
    3) Select on the bar to search for Steven [or anyone that starts with a S]
    4) Wow, all the letters pop up for you to select the key. Yes, it is a fantastic idea.
    5) Ok, you found your friend's name and called him.
    6) Ok.. Now go to SMS, and you can't remember his number. Select the search bar.
    7) Please don't tell me you don't see the difference in the screen. Coz most likely you will see that the alphabet ends with R, and you will have to switch to the 2nd page to find the S.
    8) Please be honest to us, and to yourself. Do you find that intuitive? Do you enjoy going to the second page in the SMS mode, but you get the full list for the phonebook.
    9) Or is it because it is possible that different modules are done by different person who don't bother to review and see if they could have programmed it consistently?

    -- Continue
    Challenge 6
    1) Has anyone notice how big and friend the alphanumeric keypad for SMS is? [admist all the inconsistency of different language]
    2) Big nice buttons for us to press. Nice
    3) Think the developer just like nice big buttons to press on the screen. But wait a minute, I need to SMS, and I'm in the SMS mode.
    4) Look at the display of SMS. 4 lines [use small fonts and you get 5 or 6]. Wonderful, I get to see 6 lines maximum, and but WOW!!! I get BIG NICE numeric keypad to press - something that took up 3 QUARTERS of my wonderful huge over 3" display screen.
    5) Maybe the developers felt, why would you want to key in so many lines of text. All you need is nice big buttons to press.
    6) Maybe some will argue, this is to make it friendly, nice  and easy to key in. Or, there's limitations to how big or small the buttons can be.
    7) True, but hey.. look at the calculator layout. Yah I agree, there are some buttons which are different from the alphanumeric keypad for SMS, but look the layout and size. And look at the number of lines of display.. Don't you think that you would like to see that much of your text [if you had key in 160 characters?]
    8) Or would you rather write your message, missed out something in the front of your message , press the NICE GREEN TICK BUTTON, see it displayed on a full page, select the area, then go into the TINY TEENY WEENY space, position the cursor with those NICE HUGE LEFT RIGHT [UP DOWN buttons also if you hare in different language mode} to that area which you need to change on that tiny text area.
    9) Doesn't it feel good?
    8) If you tell me the calculator is functional at that sizing using the keypad, what is so different from SMS texting?
    9) If I know better, the keypad layouts and sizing should be interchanged between the functionality.
I guess, no one at Nokia will ever bother to read these. , or even admit to seeing all these comments.
Some can brush these comments aside.. "We can't please everyone", or "These are just wishlist. We have to look at the big picture", or "Customers will never be satisfied" or "Don't worry, they COULD be included in the next FIRMWARE update".
Or all they need to do is to believe once again  that " we design phones to be used and enjoyed by everyone" and not "my developers has to do this this way , so be it"
I was curious about other touch phones, so I took a look at the various SamSang a song that was LeallyGood.  First time user of their phone, and I was enjoying the intiutiveness. Guess that is what our dear Nokia developers lack, the "Human Touch". After all , they are the largest phone company in the world. Maybe they will bother about their customers and supporters, fans when they drop to being the 2nd, 3rd ,4th or last
But at least I must still admit, speed wise, 5800XM is still quite acceptable [when compared to the N96 which I made the mistake of buying in replacement to my 5800XM]. Imagine how I feel, to get 2 phones that gives nothing but headaches, heartaches, being rediculed when people see you using a Nokia phone. Double regret within 6 months. Have you waited 3 secs to respond to your selection. And the number of reboots, hanged up application, unresponsiveness..
Anyway, I'll leave my gripe about N96 till a later stage.  It' s not a problem with symbian S60 V5 or V3 or whatever programs.  It is a lack of "HUMAN" in the company that is causing all the problems.
Why am I frustrated. All I see solutions around is " Oh!!! Have you upgraded to the latest firmware", "Do a *#7780*, do a *#7470*, if you can't solve it, send it to CUstomer Care. Same solution to different problems? Ever think about the root of the problem?
Firmwares frequency. Too much and nothing gets changed except "stability issues, better camera quality".  What a joke, you get a phone with 3.2megapixel inbuilt... and the first pictures you take is horrible. Then with updates in firmware, the pictures gets better. Why on earth was it first released with horrible quality pictures and improved with updates? Is camera function something new for the company? Or no one bothered to test the product before launch?
Or wait for 6 months for a huge update [to clear 4 dozen faults, problems,]. In the meantime, the company is trying to say "Oh well, too bad you bought a reduced function phone. If you want the phone to work like a real phone, please wait till we accumulated enough problems from feedbacks, my developers has time to rectify the problems and we will release the updates when the time is right. If you cannot wait, please buy our latest phone [for eg. N97], which solves some of the problems you are facing right now, but has 3 dozen of new problems"
By the way, I've been to Nokia Customer Care since the 1st week of buying the phone. I've already visited Nokia Customer Care 6 times over 6 months. Not too much, about once a month. I guess that's quite acceptable to most people? Or is it?
I really wonder, what phones do the developers at Nokia use if they need to purchase a phone. And I mean purchase like everyone else. And I'm really interested to know what phone does the boss of Nokia uses. If he had seen all these problems, would he use it still.

  • Can't get videos on N96

Okay I have a feeling this is just me being really stupid, but I've wasted a ridiculous amount of time encoding videos over and over again that I hope someone can just give me a simple answer.
I have movies that I ripped off the DVDs (legit) using VLC. I used .mp4 for the encapsulation method, mp4v @ 1024 kb/s for the video codec and mp3 @ 192 kb/s for the audio codec. Those don't work on my phone, and I have tried encoding those files with variations of mp4v, h264, mp4a and mp3 at various bit rates with little luck. I have gotten to the point where I can get a file with that plays in nokia video manager (the DVDs as I ripped them don't, I get a missing codec error) just fine, but when I transfer to the phone I am only getting audio, no video.
So does anyone have a good way to encode videos for use on the phone, and the specific settings you use?

  • Can't locate Wi-Fi on Nokia N96.

i cant locate wifi on my Nokia n96
Moderator's note: The subject was edited. A new thread was created.

Hi, McMozelle. If you're trying to find the Wi-Fi settings, go to the phone's main menu > Tools > WLAN wiz.. To start a search for available WLAN's, select the status and then Search for WLAN. Otherwise, may we know the reason why you're trying to locate your phone's Wi-Fi?
We'll wait for your response. BTW, welcome to our community.

  • Puzzled by N96 and N81

    Here's why i'm puzzled.
N95/N82 and others carry the omap 3d cpu... (I thought for n-gage ??)
N96 does not support N-Gage, because "lack of 3D chip"
N81 supports N-Gage, however it too has a "lack of 3D chip"
    Now if you go to
    http://www.glbenchmark.com/result.jsp
You'll see that the N81 is actually slower than the Nokia 6110, because it has no 3D chip.
    See where i'm going?
Compare the N95 to the N81 on the game, Global Racer, you'll see how the N81 does what the Nokia 6110 does, about 3 frames per second if that.....
So the million dollar question, if the N81 supports N-Gage games then so should every single Nokia phone which does not have the omap CPU... the 6110 is faster, faster cpu, no 3D chip, yet i don't see N-Gage mentioned anywhere...
What's going on? How can a phone without a 3D chip which is found in the N82/N95 etc play n-gage games?....

To the best of my knowledge (and that's saying something), the N96 DOES support Ngage.
I don't know where you got that information. Like it was said 3D acceleration doesn't automatically prevent Ngage compatibility.
According to Nokia's little chart, it will not be supporting n-gage, but the point was not that it *can't* support, it obviously can along with every other symbian 60 nokia phone Nokia's released over the past couple of years, just that they're deciding not too...
    http://www.nokia-tuning.net/index.php?s=processor
What interests me is that if the next gen phones of the N Series no longer use the omap cpu from texas instruments then the 3D acceleration will just be a relic from the past... obviously, the STn8815 Nomadik cpu (ARM926 332 MHz)
is going to be pretty powerful as it can support all that video functionality in real time to record tv shows and play them back, i'm betting it can pull off some nice calculations for games..... but that's another story.
    http://www.st.com/stonline/products/families/mobile/processors/stn8815.htm
info on the N96 processor above.
The TI OMAP 2420 range processors can handle the 3D processing as you can see the n-gage phone itself where all this gaming began uses a 32-bit RISC CPU ARM-9 104 MHz which also happens to be in all of the "cheaper" models which is why every single phone should be capable of using n-gage and playing n-gage games..
just that nokia chooooooooses not to for the N96.
    http://www.planetn96.com/images/n96vn95.jpg
As indicated on the chart from nokia (just the image is externally linked) that might be a no no, if it is, sorry i'll not post an image externally linked again, but the screenshot is directly from the nokia site which i can't seem to find...
it clearly states that N96 will not be support n-96, although quite clearly it could easily be added.

  • Can't change the date and time

On a recent trip abroad, my N96 automatically switched to the local time on arrival, but it failed to switch back to UK time when I returned. Now my phone is stuck 3 hours ahead, and it won't let me change the date or time manually. When I select Settings | General | Date and time, and click Open, 'Change' flashes up briefly, but even if I'm fast enough to click it, nothing happens.
I've tried reverting to the Factory Settings, but that did not resolve the problem. I've also checked for Firmware updates, but there aren't any. Any suggestions for fixing this would be very welcome...

Your operator doesn't seem to support time autoupdate while the operator you connected to while abroad does.
Go into the clock settings and set auto time update to "off". Then set the time zone to "GMT 0:00 London". This should bring the clock's time back to what it should be. If it doesn't, at least you can do so manually now (having auto time update set to "on" removes your ability to set the date and time manually).

  • N96 Keyboard lock problem

    Hi everybody.
With my old n95 when i closed the slide the keyboard was locked. when i opened it it was unlocked again.
With my new N96 when i close the slide it doesn't lock. it locks itself in a certain amount of time (i put it on 10s), but i can't seem to unlock it with a key.
    Can't find the unlock key...
    help me!

Refer to the "Getting Started" guide that came with the phone. It'll show you the location of the keypad lock switch. It's a good idea to look at the documentation sometimes...

    Hi rshan1994,
For how long have you been having this issue with the Facebook app, and what Nokia phone do you have? What connection are you using when accessing Facebook? Please make sure you have a good signal if using data connection, or you can also use Wi-Fi; if your phone supports that type of connection.
