N96 storage and usb

Hi All,
I'm wondering the best use of the storage capabillities of the N96. I've just bought an 8gb card then thought , why ?
I guess I'm really asking where do most people put applications, photos, games, music etc. All in one place or ?
Second question.
After my N96 died after a nokia software update, phone is being replaced free btw. I'm wondering if there is a software glitch with the usb power or something. I have had problems with my computer losing I'ts connection to the 96 but none of our other phones do, N76, N70, N95.
Maybe other posters have had similar experiances?
Thanks for reading
Pete
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I always install applications in the phone's central memory (C: ) and use the mass storage exclusively for media like music, videos, photos etc. I use a memory card for doing backups and nothing else.
The usb disconnection problem has nothing to do with power, mainly because the N96 doesn't draw any from the usb port. It's more likely to be your computer.

  • What is the best external hard drive for macbook pro I think I want firewire for storage and usb for time machine

I have a macbk pro. I think a usb external drive would be fine for time machine but I'd like a fire wire external drive to store files.
Any recommendations on brand? The last recommendations were dated 2006/7
I have been waiting for a 1TB  g-drive. Apparently they are special order. I did not think I needed anything larger than 1 TB to backup the 500GB internal drive.
I thought I'd get something bigger for storage. From what I have read I think its best not to partition the drive for backup and storage.
Also I'd like to have a bootable copy of my internal hard drive is that possible?

Don't know about the Best... But I have been using these without any issues...

  • Setting up time capsule for storage and printer, but not internet

Hi all. I am a new mac user and got time capsule yesterday. I am only using it as storage and USB printer; not for an internet/network use. During setup, I didn't see any option to configure it this way. I did a backup successfully, but the amber light blinks continuously....I am assuming because there's no ethernet/modem? But if I don't intend to use it for that, is it normal for it to always blink amber? Should I find a way to tell it that it's not to be used for that? Or do I just ignore it and live with the blinking light? Thanks.

Paul's suggestion did work - thank you!
However, my anal retentive personality still wonders why there's not a more intuitve phase in the setup process that allows the user to clearly define what they're using it for....i.e. rather than manually override an "error".
Of course, i do have new questions, too -
If the capsule is connected to a computer both wirelessly and with ethernet, which is the preferred/default connection used?
The setup tells me to update firmware, but i haven't yet and it seems to be running fine....any recommendations?

  • What is the best USB powered portable 1TB hard drive for a macbook pro that allows Time machine to work, windows (thru Parallels software) and mac storage and is available in Australia?

I agree with teh OWC sggestion above, but why must it be USB powered? I find that far more unreliable, and the low power devices slow.
I'd frankly get a good external enclosure and buy a bare drive.  But the OWC stuff is quite good - vastly better than some of the majors (WD being aprime example of stuff that's boderline quality and often not compatible)

Been using an Avastor HDX-800 for storage and backup, also a SUPERDISK for smaller stuff; recently the SUPERDISK does not appear on the screen, and the light blinks while you hear it spin, also the Avastor has started to have the same problem, both USB conncected, both worked well before, but both now spinning, blinking, and not showing up on the screen as before,
Interestingly they both appear in the System Profiler, but just not working the same as before
I have tried other USB ports, but the same responce,

yes I did reset the PRAM, but no benefit, still the same problem
my usb devices are:  keyboard, mouse, printer, SD-USB-M3, and LaCie d2 DVDRW:
the mouse and printed are plugged into the keyboard: i have tried to move, these around, and have even tried just the mouse, printer and SD-USB-M3, but still the same problem

  • PCI Communication Controller and USB Mass Storage Device driver was missing

    Hi,
Recently i formated HP Pavilion Slimline 400 PC series and reinstalled with windows 7 32 bit.\
initially i found a lot of driver was missing. i have gone through hp support forums and almost all drivers are running on 64 bit with minimum requirement OS windows 8.1.
i couldn't find it anywhere. under device manager, these two devices are being shown with yellow exclamation
    PCI Simple Communication Controller :
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C3A&SUBSYS_2AF7103C&REV_04
    PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_8C3A&SUBSYS_2AF7103C

    USB Mass Storage Device :
    USB\VID_054C&PID_02A5&REV_0100
    USB\VID_054C&PID_02A5
Please kindly provide the link for the drivers, so i can use my PC.
    thanks in advance

    Hi:
Did you install the USB3 controller driver so the device you installed could work?
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?DwnldID=21129&lang=eng&ProdId=3467
The USB Mass Storage Device is something you have connected to the PC.
Specifically a Sony® MicroVault USB Flash Drive.
If my suggestion to let windows update find the Intel Management Engine driver, didn't work, see if this driver from Intel works.  It also has the hardware ID for that device in the setup information file.

  • EA4500 Mac OS X Lion and USB storage

Hello everybody, I have EA4500 and usb had drive attached to router.
Ok, I can acces USB storage through FTP on my Mac OS X, I can acces it through smb in Windows 7 (running on the same macbook in vmware) but i can't acces it through smb directly from mac os (finder).
I tried finder-->Go-->connect to server and entered smb://192.168.111.1/Data or smb://admin:[email protected]/Data anyway i had error "The share does not exist on the server. Please check the share name, and then try again."
Also, I installed XBMC for MAC and XBMC can acces to storage by smb.
    Where I am wrong?
PS. Drive formatted as HFS+ MBP early 2011 (OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion GM doesnt matter dont working in both). Connected to EA4500 by ethernet (wifi connection dont work too)

Hi please check on this link:http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/Unable-to-access-network-drive-with-OS-X-10-7-Lion/td-p/955..., this may help the problem that you are having right now.

  • IPhone storage via USB and WiFi

    Hi,
I'm looking for an APP which allows to use iPhone as USB Key (storage), and to transfer files via USB and WiFi connections.
I've found some, but I would like one which offers both transfer mode: USB and WiFi.
Could you tell me the best APP that you know?
    Thanks,
    Chris

    neuroanatomist wrote:
There is no app for USB storage, because the SDK does not allow developers to write apps to access the dock connector for data transfer. Plenty of apps for Wi-Fi storage in the App Store.
Could be... in the past "FileApp" (previously FileAid) supported USB data transfer, but now they say "Removed USB connection support - as per Apple request FileAid no longer offers the ability to access files via USB"!
    http://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/fileapp-previously-fileaid-document/id297804694?m t=8
Why did Apple disable this offer?
Sometimes Apple plays very closed environment... too much commercial, not enough friendly
I've found another App which supports USB transfer, "Flash Drive" from "Readdle":
    http://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/flash-drive-view-save-with-drag/id300366636?mt=8
    Do you know this App?
USB is faster than WiFi.. and with 32GB storage, USB technology should be the minimal level of data tranfer!

  • KDE 4.2 and USB Mass Storage , does not write data until unmounted

    Hi,
I have a Nokia phone that I connect for USB mass storage, and KDE 4.2.2 does not seem to write the data to the device until I unmount.
Is there a way to force the write so it happens right away?  It's annoying because I can't see any progress when it copies the data at unmount.
    Later,
    Snorkel

That's kinda the way linux does things, not specifically a KDE issue.  It's so that the system only has to write out to the media only once, even if you separately add/delete/move 50 different files.
I think you can run 'sync' and that will flush all the file system buffers to disk.

  • Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Can I use two Time Capsules? one as an extension of my laptop (for music and video storage) and the other one to back up everything from the laptop and  Time Capsule (for music and videos)

Not via Time Machine.   It cannot back up from a network location.
The 3rd-party apps CarbonCopyCloner and ChronoSync may be workable alternatives.
EDIT:  And, if you're going to do that, you could back up from the Time Capsule to a USB drive connected to the TC's USB port.  Second TC not required.

  • My iphone external hard drive keeps disconnecting so it tells me I disconnected improperly. I have changed electric cord directly to outlet and usb also direct, and it still happens.

I store ALL my photos (400 events) on an external 1T hard drive. The hard drive keeps disconnecting so it get a msg telling me I disconnected improperly basically which is a serious no no. I then have to re-start. I have tried connecting directly to the wall outlet, to a super duper surge protector and also have connected the usb (was on a usb port) directly to the computer. But it continues to happen a total nusance. What do I do?

I would first contact  Seagate's tech support for a possible solution. If that doesn't prove successful then I would try a different product or consider building your own.
    Basic Backup
Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    Silver Keeper
    Retrospect
    Super Flexible File Synchronizer
    SuperDuper!
    Synchronize Pro! X
    Synk Pro
    Synk Standard
    Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
    Cool Drives
    OWC
    WiebeTech
    Firewire Direct
    California Drives
    NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Mac Mini and USB 2.0 hubs (hubs stop working within a month)

I have an aluminum Mini running OSX 10.6.6 (Snow Leopard). With only 4 USB ports, I have need of a USB hub to accommodate my external drives and other peripherals: keyboard/mouse, camera and iPhone have to use the existing ports in the Mini (difficult access to ports due to space limitations), leaving one port for up to 4 external drives (older drives 40-60gb used for backup and extra storage).
I have problems using powered USB 2.0 hubs with this computer; I have 'burned out' 2 hubs since buying the Mini in February. They just flat out stop working, though they still show power (the power indicator light on the hubs); no peripheral is recognized when plugged into the hub (which worked fine for about a month). I can unplug the 'must use Mini ports' (camera, iPhone, charger, etc) and the peripheral drives are recognized and work normally when plugged directly into the Mini ports.
One hub was a Belkin 4-port hub (about 1 year old) and the other was a GE 3-port hub with several flash card readers (19-in-1 card reader), also about a year old. Is there any reasonable explanation why powered hubs would suddenly stop working, related to use with the Mac Mini 2010 aluminum version?
I had worse problems with the USB ports in an old (~2006) Mac Mini (out of warranty), where the USB ports in the Mini stopped working, which is partly why I bought the new mini. In light of this tidbit, (be honest, please) are there known issues with Mac Minis and USB?

Each of the external drives has its own power supply; I generally only use one drive at any one time, but on rare occasions I have powered up more than one to confirm or transfer files. I don't leave any of those drives on when not in use, and when everything is working I properly eject/unmount them before turning them off.
There have been times when I powered up a drive connected to a powered hub and both the hub and the drive indicated activity but the drive didn't mount. On those occasions the drives sometimes would not appear in Disk Utility, and other times would appear, but would not be "mountable". I didn't know what the best way to deal with that was, so I would just turn the drive off, hoping the lack of mounting on the desktop meant no real drive activity was occurring and I wouldn't risk data loss or drive damage. So far all the drives seem to work fine when plugged directly into the back of the mini.
The main external hard drive I was using when the Belkin hub failed (iomega 40g) is USB 2.0 only (no firewire). I have another drive that is only firewire (la cie 60g)... so it wasn't a factor. Two other external drives are ACOM, one 40g one 120g, and then there's my old iMac G5 disk (display fizzled and everything but the disk recycled through Apple's recycling program) which is mounted in an external enclosure and is part of the USB contingent, but is not being used for anything but backup (all three both USB 2 and FW400 capable). (I know, too many toys... but why throw them out?)
The USB hubs both had their own power supplies, too, and I never used them without power (though I tried it as part of troubleshooting, before reading the Apple article on USB and power requirements). Other USB devices that only work when plugged into the mac directly are my Epson Stylus CX4800 all-in-one, and my Radio Shark.
So, whaddya think? Should I risk buying another powered USB hub or just live with plugging in peripherals to one available USB port (through a short USB 2.0 extension) and only use one at a time? That would be a bit of a pain, but if there are no issues you've heard of with Mac USB ports (several unanswered questions in the Mini Support forums here involving USB and peripherals, I noticed), what else would explain the seemingly short lives of USB hubs?
Oh, here's something I just remembered: the last time the Belkin hub was working (last night), I had my Radtech BT mouse charger cable plugged in (not charging, mouse not attached) along with two of the external hard drives, and my Fuji camera USB cable. I got an error message onscreen (on the Mini) that a drive had been improperly ejected (or put away?), yet the hard drive in question was still mounted on the desktop. I looked at the hub, and the loose ends of the charger and the camera USB cable were touching. Could that have caused the error (and maybe the hub to fail)? (Edit: the camera cable I think was plugged into the mini's one available port; 3 external drives and the mouse charger were plugged into the hub, _but only one drive powered up and in use (3rd edit)_. The camera end of its USB cable contacted the mini-plug end of the mouse charger... could that have short-circuited the hub? +That wouldn't explain the failure of the GE hub a couple weeks before... but I don't know if any of this is connected, so to speak--2nd edit.+)

  • Mounting NTFS,FAT32 and USB FLASH drive

    Problem and problem!!
I am going to fade up with Solaris 10. Please somebody help me!!
Problem is with mounting my FAT32, NTFS partitions and USB flash drive (twinmos).
How can I mount FAT32, NTFS file system and my USB flash drive in Solaris 10??

cN: the N'th disk controller installed in the system
tN: the SCSI TARGET id. Also used for atapi, firewire and usb mass
storage device, but it's always 0. Use to identify a specific disk
    device on the disk controller.
dN: the SCSI LUN id. For atapi devices this is 0 for master device,
1 for the slave device. For usb mass storge devices this field could
contain a value > 0 - for example usb flash card readers often
present the slots for the various flash card formats as multiple LUNs. For simple usb flash memory sticks, this should be
    LUN 0.
sN: the slice N from the SunOS disk label. On a media without a
disk label, slice 2 can be used to access all of the medias contents. Solaris SPARC supports slices s0 - s7, Solaris x86
    slices s0 - s15.
pN: on Solaris x86 only: p0 is the whole disk (similar to slice s2,
when there's no SunOS disk label), p1 - p4 are the four primary
    fdisk partitions.
The ":c" suffix assumes the media contains the fat filesystem in
a separate fdisk partition, searches the fdisk partition table for
the first partition containing a fat filesystem, and mounts the
filesystem from that partition. On Solaris x86, instead of using
"p0:c" you could also use one of the p1 - p4 device; but the pN
fdisk slices don't exist on Solaris SPARC.

  • Mass Storage via USB

Why Mass Storage via USB is not available?

All mobile devices are designed to keep routine connections minimal to keep the cost down, but equally all smart devices are capable of some features which include the transfer of large amounts of data. The typical user should not have major problems balancing the two.
We got this comment from team who developed the Lumia 800:
"Experience shows us that 16GB is the optimal storage size for the vast majority of everyday smartphone users."
    Lol, yeah right.
    1)  If one is on the move often, no access to free WIFI, no unlimited 3G data plan(no such thing unlimited 3G at my location), transfering large amounts of data that way means $$$$$$$. That's provided the internet connection is dependable. Having usb on the go or SD card allows for less dependancy on constant internet connection
    2) 16GB is not enough for video & music storage, it's 10GB or less after application storage. That's why I use a SD card along with my 8GB E6 and purchased the 64GB N9 instead of 16GB.
If this WP7 going to replace Symbian after 2016 & wants to go at it this way, it's sad, esp for long time Nokia users
