N96 update - SOS

Hi everybody.
Sunny greetings from Portugal.
I just tried to upgrade firmware on my N96 and in the middle of the update
got the message that the operation failed. Even the Recover option failed.
So I tried to turn on the phone and got a black screen.
Then I tried the "3 finger deep reset" (depress these three keys simultaneously "*" "3" "green phone" and then power on ) but got the very same result (black screen).
PLEASE, can anybody help me?
Thanks

Dear grschinon, as per my knowledge and my personal experience, I want to tell you that if the mobile is not purchased from authorised distributor channel, not imported that piece specialy for that country and customer purchased it from other country or not from right channel then NCP not gives service still if it is under warranty. It is my personal experience. Once I purchased N82 from Dubai and I got same problem and my country NCP not gave me paid service also because they told me that it is european region mobile and here we give service only for asian region mobile. I have to send my mobile Dubai for reflash it. I got free service there because my mobile had Dubai warranty only. I had contacted every possible sorcer of Nokia like NCP of 3 city, email, call but nobody help me because my mobile was purchased from other country.
If you like my post then give me "Kudos" star...

  • N96 Update - No update

I see many users talk about v12 firmware for the Nokia N96. I am however, still stuck on V10.065, the NSU says there is no update available - I am experiencing the same problems as many of the N96 users out there.

    You are welcome
Just keep in mind that all attempts to blame the manufacturer are lies based on a lack of technical knowledge.
One last thing that you may want to try is a nokia care point.  On rare occasions they do have newer versions of operator branded firmware that haven't made it onto the updater yet.

  • Nokia N96 Updated But Problems

Hi there, I have had my n96 for a couple of months now. Timed Had Come To Debrand It and update it i updated it to v12 from v11 then i couple days later v20 was released so i updated it to the latest but then bang. update finishes fine and phone was ok for a couple of mins a friend rang i picked up and phone turned off. and wont turn back on since. all i get is a white light and then after 10 or 20 seconds i think the phone turns off (dont no because the light dosnt come on). is there anyway i can fix this. i am technically minded so any help would be appreciated. thanks folks.

Firstly follow the advice in this thread
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=topfaq&thread.id=112
If you get down to the hard reset and that doesn't fix it then it's a trip to the nokia care point where you will have to pay to have your phone fixed back to its original config as you have voided the warenty

  • Anyone Solved the N96 Update Issue?

Wondering if anyone has come up with a solution to the problem of being asked to remove battery, charger and retry etc when using Nokia PC Suite to upgrade the firmware?
I have a branded T-Mobile N96 and the firmware update is available now to 11.###
I can't get past the step where it asks me to disconnect the charger and press the power button - very frustrating!
    Anyone solved it?
    Cheers

I had a lot of trouble updating my N82 using vista. It worked fine using XP. I have successfully updated other phones using vista but I still prefer XP for updates.
You should consider a reset as a last resort. Back up before you do using ovi suite if you have any pre-installed content that has a licence key. If you have installed any apps to the mass memory it may help to format that before a *#7370# reset.
Reset to factory defaults (*#7780#) : Restores settings but preserves user data (photos, 3rd party apps etc)
Reset (*#7370#) : This reformats completely the C: drive. All applications and files stored on this drive will be lost and clean default files will be rewritten.

  • N96 Update Fails

I'm currently on the 12.043 firmware, and I'm trying to update to the 20.050 firmware.  The upgrade starts, but it seems to hang at 14 minutes, then it says that the phone disconnected and it can no longer continue the upgrade.  It tells me to unplug the USB cable, battery etc, which I do, however this just comes up with the same result.  I've been trying this on and off for about a month, with the same result each time.
Anyone know how to fix this?!
    Thanks in advance!

A fota update is much safer and quicker. However if your update is only available using NSU then your options are limited. You have an O2 branded phone. The firmware on network branded phones have been modified by the network and they don't tend to do a very good job. I have a non branded N96 with no bugs when I hear people complaining about buggy phones because they bought subsidised phones that have been badly modified by the network.
Anyway, enough of that ranting. Your update could be stopping for a few reasons. Make sure you have a good broadband connection as a poor connection will cause the update to fail during the download stage. You should also make sure you have the latest version of pcsuite. If you already have the latest it may be worth your while reinstalling it.

  • N96 Update problem.

Hi. I just bought a new n96, which seems very nice, made in finland, brand new etc, however I decided to update the software via nokia pc suite. It sees the phone, and says that I can update it from my current version to a new one. However during the "updating the software" stage, when the bar is about 15% full, it says that there is some sort or recovery problem and I should try to take out my battery, reinsert it again, plug in the charger once again and press continue. Tried it, however the same problem occurs over and over again. What can I do about it?
Also, where are your repair and support centres in london (do you have any, I failed to fine them on the website)?
    Many thanks

I have successfully updated my software yesterday. Now I have V11.101.098.1 and the phone performs a little bit better.
Make sure you got the latest version of NSU which is V1.4.64en. Please follow the instructions step by step. I also thought something was wrong with the NSU and the instructions when I come across the 'recovery' bit. Be patient and you will get there. It takes a few minutes, more than you thought it would. During the 'recovery' bit, leave the usb cable connected and just remove the battery and put it back on. Press 'continue' and then just press the power button on the phone only once. You will NOT see an immediate response from the phone or the NSU. This is where you have to be careful not to unplug the usb cable. Trust me after a few minutes you will see things start to move again, fast. Just before completion the phone screen switches on in 'test mode'. You will see the ' N96 Disconnected' message on the system tray through out most of the process. This is normal and you just leave things as it is.
Read the on screen instructions please. It is all there.

  • N96 Update issue

I have an update available (11.101), but the update doesn't complete.
The full 127Mb (or whatever) downloads, and it starts the update, tells me approx 15 minutes left, and just seems to freeze at that.
Sometimes it comes up with the phone recovery screen, sometimes doesn't, just stays at 15 mins left forever!
I have uninstalled the software updater program, and re-installed, same thing.
I had an N96 recently, and it worked fine, but I had it replaced on insurance yesterday, and now doesn't work.
    Any ideas?

The reason why the warranty is lost is because you have modified the handset. I agree that the reasoning is more commercial than technical but that's the way it is whether we like it or not.
Orange taking your handset back is yet more proof of their incompetence. Once outside the period during which you can return a handset after taking out or renewing a contract you're supposed to contact a Nokia Care Point for repairs, not the operator. A Nokia Care Point will know that you've changed the product code and will be in their right to refuse to repair the phone under warranty, and could even refuse to repair the phone at all.
Nobody buys phones from me -- I don't sell them. However, you're right in that something like 90% of phones in the UK are obtained from operators with contracts or PAYG rather than bought SIM-free direct from Nokia or a third-party retailer. Personally, I am one of the remaining 10%, preferring to pay the extra price and get the phone as it was intended by Nokia instead of crippled by an operator, and get access to firmware updates sooner.

  • N96 Update and refomat

Hi i am about to update my n96 and then reformat it by typing in *7370# but i do not want to lose all the pre installed vids etc. will backing up with pc suite save all these and have my phone be as it was before the update and reformat? thanks

The user data protection feature in this new model should protect the licence keys for preinstalled content, but just in case you should also backup the phone with Ovi PC Suite (note: not standard Nokia PC Suite) before taking the action.

See this faq for reasons as to why you cannot update:

All you can do is wait.
Also make sure you check for FOTA update as sometime they are released that way.

  • N96 Update Error

Hell everyone, i was just updating my N96 when it lost connection and told me to do the following steps remove the batter, usb cable and charger and reinsert it. But it keeps doing the same thing. Now i try turning on the phone and am getting a blank white screen and its just there going of and on back. Can some one help me please

MrBenjamin, I'm afraid you will have to take the phone to an authorized repair centre. You may try the hard reset procedure once more (Make sure the phone is turned off. Press and hold down 3, *, Call(green) buttons simultaneously. Turn on without leaving them. Leave the three buttons only when you see the region selection screen). But I'm not very sure if it'll work.
    Good luck

  • Nokia N96 updating problems

    Hello
First, I know N96 is an old phone, but I wanted it so bad, and i got one few months ago. I bough it with 20.050 firmware in it, and when i went check for updates (OTA) it said, and it always says no updates available. I checked the code behind the battery and its: 0543719, checked on the site says there is newer version firmware for my phone available. I tried updating with Nokia Software Updater, again latest version, but it shows error saying it can't identify my device. A friend of mine told me he updates via Ovi suite. I installed it and tried to update. It detected my phone, firmware and everything, it downloaded the latest firmware, but when i go to install, it shows that my usb is disconnected, and then connected again.. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zy8EZd0uBYc)
Is there any way i can update to the latest firmware? Can my phone die or get stuck on the oldest firmware if i do recovery? thanks.

There are 3 ways to update the firmware for the N96 and they are
    1. OTA (over the air) which is the preferred method.
    2. Ovi Suite/Nokia Software Updater
    3. Nokia Care Point.
There is always a risk of bricking the phone if the update fails. This will then definitely require a trip to the local Nokia Care Point.
Sometimes when I encounter problems with the updating process, I actually hard reset the phone using the *#7370# reset code before I update. This could rid the phone of any settings etc that may be causing the problem.
Remember to backup your phone before attempting anything.
    Good luck.

  • Nokia n96 update software

Please help! I am trying to update firmware of my nokia n96 from 10... to 11... version. It is so strange but everything starts just fine then it stops at 9.2 mb of 124 mb to download. It says the connection is lost, busy. Can anybody help me out with this please? It is making me crazy,1 month of trying... EVERYTHING STOPS AT 9.2 mb exactly everytime... Please help

It's most likely a software conflict on your PC. Make sure that you close all other running programs and ensure that your PC is fully up to date. Also try re-installing the NSU.
If it still won't work then you need to try the update on another PC. If that is not an option then you can get your phone updated at a nokia care point.

    Hello
i have problem with my nokia n96, when i open nokia pc suite and go to software update show me 11.101 and only two applications are available: mail for exchange and nokia messaging. I do not see there download the software or something like that. Software is from 2008 i want to update this phone but i can't. I downloaded NSU but this can not install... Please HELP. I want in update polish language.

Is your phone locked to any Network ? Availability of update depends on region / Product Code and also for locked devices an approval from the Operator is needed. In any case it seems quite a long time that the phone has this version. You may ask your local Nokia Care whether they can help updating the Firmware to the latest version ...

  • N96 - updating to V20 with only little memory left

    Hello
I'd like to install the new firmware for my N96 but I don't want to do it without advice:
My C: drive on the phone is nearly full - about 8MB left and a few times a day, especially when I'm using maps, web and music player at once, it says: memory almost full, delete some data (or something like that, it's a translation from dutch).  I tried to empty this drive a bit, but it isn't possible I think.  No music, photo, video or documents on that drive.  I just installed too much apps (I always put them on the C drive to be sure it works good).
    So, in fact: two questions:
    - Is there a way to get rid of some data on my C drive?
    - Should I install the V20 firmware with only little space left on the C: drive?
    Thanks for your help!
    Dieter Vanmarcke, Belgium

i never install applications on C drive, i always install them on my memory card, always ( i have a N78), and i have never once had a problem. make sure that you are using a reliable memory card too, such as Sandisk, but not Kingston or especially Transcend, as there have been many reported problems with them. you are lucky too in that you have mass memory on N96 (the 16gb space) so install there even if you do not want to install applications on your memory card. i find that installing applications on the memory card and not C drive makes no difference in speed of the applications. but its always better to keep as much space available on C drive, as happens with computers, so the device isn't slowed down in operation and you don't get the Memory Full warnings.
i would backup all your data first and do upgrade to v20.050. even though N96 has User Data Preservation, i would do another hard reset after the firmware upgrade to make sure everything is clean. then restore all your applications and stuff back.
If you found this or someone's comments helpful or like what that person has to say, please give some Kudos to their post!
