N97, a great phone.

I got to say this, i have started to like my N97 more and more.
This weekend i was on a fishing trip with a few friends and they all used android phones. After just one day i was the only one with a working phone although i used maps (love the latest update by the way) and other programs, i had no battery problems what so ever.
Why on earth do someone by a cellphone that needs to be attached to a poweroutlet to work?
Just wanted to tell you this.

Dear N97dissaster, please read my post again and take it for what it is. I never said the n97 was perfect, and the post wasn't really about the n97 either. - It was a reply to someone who actually did write something constructive on these boards. - And I just said that I think that is nice to see that once in a while. - And yes, I do know that these boards are here for troubleshooting.
I have never said that the n97 was a prefect device. - And I'm not going to make any comment about the n97 as there is thousands of posts here about it already. If you wanna know, my n97 is my backup-phone.
Now, I know people are facing lots of problems with it, and I believe a 100 per cent that you do it too.
My post was just my opinion of the fact that the OP wrote something constructive. - I would have replied if he had a 5800 or whatever.
The OP is happy with the n97's battery life, and he has the right to be so, as much as you have the right to be dissapointed.
But my reply was ment for the OP - not you.
I'm sorry the N97 didn't live up to your expectations and I hope you will find one device that suits you and makes you feel you get what you paid for.

You'd need an app like Skype to video call with other phones.
Data transfer is not supported via bluetooth and iphone to iphone is not supported at all.

I bought that great phone NOKIA E51 but it needs a FIRMWARE UPDATE because the built'in camera gives photo(and videos too!) in VERY VERY "green" color that's too bad (MY OLD 6630 , so only 1,3 megapixel is best in photo quality against my actually E51..!)

phone. However, I feel that there are some shortcomings with the

1) The camera has a VERY noticeable green tint
2) The video playback in full screen mode using RealPlayer is VERY
slow and choppy
3) In the "Missed Calls" part of the call log, there is NO way to
determine WHICH number of the contact was the call missed - "Mobile

Great phone BUT! To much Google...

My present phone is a Razr Maxx HD and I love it. My wife uses the "M" and is totally happy with it. Motorola always have produced great phones and I intend to continue to use them. However, I am really getting fed up with the behind the scenes functions. A phone is a personal item. The least Google could do is default all of the backups to off. With Google+, Verizon BUA, Circle of friends, Picasa and God know which others, I am afraid to take a picture these days not knowing where it may end up. The one App I did enjoy, Motocast apparently rubbed Verizon wrong and it disappeared from the new phone. My phone directory looks different every day depending which "backup" chooses to update and I end up with numerous copies of everyone's listings.. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!!

Actually no I didn't buy this phone. The insurance company couldn't replace my original Razr, (you know, the pre Google era model) so happily they sent me this one. Yes I bought Motorola and I will again. I know Motorola is now regrettably owned by Google. Your intended insight is well known by everyone so I can only take it as sarcasm.
I have owned Motorola products since they came with vacuum tubes. Something you most likely are too young to know about. They have always produced superior products and I doubt if Google will ever improve the quality.
I realize it is best to use one and not both backup methods. Which is what I was complaining about in the first place. The new phone came with all of this turned on by default leaving the user to search and muddle through the endless deep corners of the operating system to disable. The first thing this phone wanted to do was backup all 1047 pictures on my sim card to BUA. All while setting in the car using Verizon data. Luckily I caught it at picture 47. Google did it again that night but this time on Wi Fi.
Again, I have few issues with Google products. I have a problem when they do things on their own without letting the customer know. I bought and paid for my phone. It does not belong to Google and Verizon, (nor the NSA) to do with as they please. I thought perhaps mistakenly, that this site was a place to let them know. If so, Verizon, please give me back my Motocast.
Believe it or not, and other than that, I am a happy Motorola and Verizon customer and have been for quite some time.

The N97 is an old phone now, I'm guessing you've never formatted it?
After lots of use, installing apps-uninstalling apps, browsing internet etc your phone gets clogged up.
If you don't want to fully wipe your phone try clearing old text messages, internet cache, call logs and see if that helps.
I would however recommend a format to "Spring Clean" your phone. Backup all your data using Nokia Suite and pictures, video's etc stored on the internal memory and then type *#7370# code 12345.
This will wipe all data from the C: drive, contacts, messages, calendar entries etc. next restore your backup and re-install any missing apps.
Hopefully you should see a massive difference in the speed of your phone after doing this and should also be able to install the app.

I bought a n97 today. I checked the web browser. ıt is said that flash is running but i get in to facebook. No video can be watched.
Besides i can't acess to my interset server of my banks. My banks internet server works with flash player. i could acess with n78 but not n97.
Facebook chat on the facebook official site do not appear. The browser do not show it...
It's not a computer. It's not a smart phone. It's a fool phone...

Can you not make do with the Facebook app? If facebook chat is a must, try Palringo from Ovi Store.
What happens with your bank's website? I had problems with mine until I started using the D Pad for navigation then it worked fine.

N97 looked great on the TV - So what exactly am I ...

First 'smart phone' I've purchased and am extremely frustrated with the thing.
Why does it just continue to try and connect to a particular wifi even though its out of range and clearly impossible to connect to? Surely it should check to see if its available and if not, move down to priority 2?
And why won't it connect to the internet via the packet data method when there is no wifi is available?
My friend uses a blackberry and he never has to go through all the steps I have to when we go for lunch. His finds the hotspot and connects, meanwhile mine is telling me it can't connect to the office wifi. Yes I know, we aren't in the office anymore!!!
I understand that you assign a connection to each tool that requires it but why can't you select "wifi where possible and phone line (data packet) if not"?
I got this on an 18 month contract to get the price down but I am seriously thinking of selling it and purchasing a bb once xmas is out of the way.
Or, is just me not being geeky enough to use the thing??

Here's an example of one of my problems and maybe you can tell me how you solve it.
I have the weather widget on at the moment and it is connected via the office wifi and works great. The trouble is when I leave the office the widget will just keep saying 'connecting'
Even when I arrive home it will continue to try and connect to the work wifi. The only way I can get it to connect to my home system is to delete the widget and then set it up again, this time selecting my home network as the connection it should use.
What I would like it to do is to connect via the phone network when I leave the office and am on the road and not in a wifi spot and then when I get home, connect via my home network.
I don't think that's too much to expect.

Great job with the new firmware (40) - adds a lot of nice features
A couple of minor problems/questions:
Predictive texting has had a "Previous" button since.. er.. probably the Nokia 3310.. It's incredibly useful, yet you took it away. Why would you do that? I know that I can tap my finger on the underlined word and most times get a menu of the choices so I can go back, but sometimes I end up highlighting text, moving the cursor or achieving nothing. I know I can also hammer the Next (*) button until the phone runs out of guesses and the menu appears but..
How about some smart way of going previous, like a gesture (press and hold *, then stroke upwards)
Or maybe you can show the menu right away (or make it configurable) and have * move through the menu (like Sony)
While we're talking about that menu; it's a bit unusable, moving a page at a time like it does. Everything else in the UI has a scroll bar or kinetic - how about making that consistent?
I'm still not really clear on how sometimes I can scroll a text kinetically and other times I end up highlighting a load of words.. What's the difference in terms of pressing the screen?
Dictionary gripes (I've had them for a long time, and I've raised tickets for them, you've said you'll fix them or you have already fixed them, but then you don't fix them)
1) How about, DON'T add new words into the dictionary unless they have actually been spelled in using the "spell" option - this automatic adding of words built from predictive compounding just rapidly fills the dictionary with garbage
2) If youre going to persist with the dictionary garbage filling, at least give us a dictionary editor facility so we can remove junk words again!
3) The manual says "when the dictionary is full your newly added word replaces the oldest added word" - if this is true then this is a very silly policy. New words should replace the LEAST USED word, not the oldest! No wonder I keep having to teach my dict the same words over and over (because a few bad design choices cause it it fill with garbage)
All in, it's getting better, and the texting on my 5800 seems much better than the N95, but with just a few small efforts it could be made brilliant.
How about offering alternate keyboard layouts to help attract people switching from other brands? Like Microsoft did in Word when they wanted to pull customers from Wordperfect; give them the same key combos as a reason to switch. This should be even easier now the buttons are graphical rather than plastic
An unrelated note.. on the dial screen, the button that deletes is a C character, on all other screens it is a bac arrow <- character.. Why the inconsistency?

1. Cant really help you with predictive text as I use qwerty. Try it.
2. Menu - icons still arent kinetic scrollable, hence main menu and app menu. Although it would depend on the user, since I have organized my app and main menu to have only one area unscrollable through kinetic scrolling in my phone, the games folder.
3. Kinetic scrolling in nokia goes like holding an area and moving it and letting go, like using that area as a "handle".
4. The things you mentioned wont likely reach Nokia by posting here. Nokia employees from the software department only seldom go around here as this is a user-to-user help forum, moderated by Nokia employees hired to do that job. ^_^

N97 Camera Crashes Phone

When I slide my camera cover open the camera application starts but it only gets as far as the black screen with a few icons on then the phone freezes for a few minutes before resetting. Opening the camera app from the menu so it uses the secondary camera does the same.
I've done a hard reset on the phone and tried to reinstall the firmware but the NSU will not let me as its already up to date.
Is there anything else I can try before visiting a repair centre?

Having the same problem just like many other N97 users out there.
There was even a youtube video showing this.
Hoping this would be fixed on the next firmware update.

N97 and speaker phone problem...

just curious here...I'd read this topic sometime ago, in regard N97 have some sort of speaker phone issue for the other party you're phoning with do not hear your voice very clearly and get intermitten cut off???

Ross, i'm not sure, but here in the states AT&T refers iPhone users to contact Apple for tech support, etc.
You may try restoring the iPhone using iTunes and or restoring most settings in Preferences. That may help. Some have found fixes by removing the SIM card (iphone off), and reinserting it...
My first guess would be a software issue. Aside from that... you'd have to contact Apple and have them send you a new one if you're nowhere near an Apple store in the UK.

Two Problems with An Otherwise Great Phone

1. I have been having problems getting a message that my SD card was unexpectedly removed. (Not the exact wording but close enough) I can tell by looking at the Gallery that it isn't lying because I can tell instantly that half of the photos are missing.I have to turn off the phone, remove it from its case and then pull the strip weather strip on the left side open to give me access to system SD and the additional storage SD. The SD is tightly in place, but I still have to pop it out by pushing in a little and raising the end and letting go. I completely remove the SD and replace it pushing it in and down making sure the spring has locked. I turn the phone back on and all is well but it will happen again. There does not seem to be a pattern to when this happens.
2. This is probably the hard question or problem. I had started having problems with my home Internet provider (Fairpoint). My two desktops and two laptops would no longer connect to the Internet. I have a Wi-Fi home network setup using NETGEAR wireless. My DSL router is connected directly to my wireless router. The two laptops are wireless, a new desktop is both Ethernet and wireless and my older desktop is Ethernet. I have wireless printers, a ROKU live streaming box, Blu-Ray DVD player all hooked connected wireless. One day, all the PC's stopped connecting to the internet. They were all connected and confirmed to the wireless router. The DSL indicators showed the internet was up and all the other devices worked. ROKU would connect to both Netflix and Amazon Prime. After talking to Fairpoint internet support for a while, they had me log into the each PC and go to my wireless network connection properties. There I had to go to the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties and change one setting. I had to deselect "Obtain DNS server address automatically" by selecting "Use the following DNS server addresses". The Preferred DNS server was set to 66.243.238.22 and the Alternate DNS server set to 137.118.1.32. Everything was rebooted and everything connected to the wireless as usual, including mine and my wifes phone (Droid Incredible). Everything including all of the PC's connected to the Internet, but now none of the phones connect. The phones are on the wireless network but they will NOT work with any software requiring Internet connectivity like Chrome or the Facebook app and the weather apps. I cannot find anywhere on the phone where you can set Internet Protocol properties or setting DNS server addresses. I live way out in the woods and have a weak phone signal. Sometimes 3g, sometimes 1g but mostly no g, but I can still get a very slow connection to the internet with the phone set to Mobile Data, but that costs money. Can any networking guru help me out here? I can sure use it. For those that took the time to read through all of this, thank you.

It turned out that the problem was the SD card. I replaced it with a new
one and have had no further problems with the "unexpectedly removed" error.
Another question, if I have Skype or other similar ap loaded, whenever I try
to initiate a call in the car using BlueTooth and speaking the name I want
to call, the phone responds with the correct name and says it is
calling...but nothng happens. If I look at the phone a pop-up message is
asking if I want to complete the call using Skype or Verizon and I have to
make the selection on the phone by hand, which obviously is a driving
distraction. On the older version of Android I think there was an option to
not make calls over the internet unless connected to WiFi, but I cannot find
a similar option on the current version 4.1.2. Is there a way to do this and
avoid that pop up question?

Nokia N97 Mini:Substandard Phone Arrogant Customer...

I have been writing to Nokia at various forums for a long time now for the problem.
Let me state the order of my problem :
·         I have purchased a Nokia N97Mini which has been having problems from the first week of purchase.
·         I spoke to the customer care representative and I was told that despite spending Rs 25000/- Nokia cannot do anything about the sub standard phone. I would have to go to a Nokia Customer Care Center.
·         I have already been to a Nokia Care Center on 25th Jan 2010.My problem was temporarily solved and I was not given any Job Sheet Number.
·         The problem again resurfaced and I was advised by your team member Shabina Yasmin to go and submit my phone to the Nokia Customer Care Center.
·         I went to the Nokia Customer Care Center on 29th Jan’2010.They reloaded the software and all data was lost. They did not give me a Job Sheet number although I asked for it repeatedly. Neither did they keep my mobile Phone with them. They said they have updated my Mobile Serial number in their records and the mobile phone would work fine now.
·         Now my phone still has a problem and keeps on hanging once I receive a call.
The Address of the Nokia Customer Care Center is :Saksham ServicesA-1/1,first floor,Acharya Niketan,Mayur Vihar Phase-I,New Delhi-91. The details of my Mobile Phone purchase are as follows:

First off, I must tell you that I am not a Nokia employee and this is a user-to-user forum.
I would advise you to contact the local Nokia head office, and report the conduct of the service center. Nokia does not run these service centers, and they are simply local companies who have bought the rights to represent Nokia as their authorized service centers in your country. You should therefore contact Nokia through the contact us button on your local homepage, and report the less than satisfactory service of their affiliate. Also ask them to refer you to another service center where you would receive better support, or to perhaps if possible handle your problem directly.

1- No puedo hacer llamadas desde la pantalla del BBM. Si alguien ha enviado mensaje y tengo un Chat, deberia poderse llamar desde alli. Tampoco existe en la pantalla de SMS ni de Mail. Al poder el dedo en pantalla para que despliegie la barra de menu a la derecha, NO ESTA LA OPCION "LLAMAR". ES NECESARIO Y UTIL QUE SE PONGA!!
Tampoco se despliega "LLAMAR" al tocar ese contacto y usar el menu de abajo a la derecha (el de los 3 puntitos en vertical). ES NECESARIO Y UTIL QUE SE PONGA!!
2- No se entiende bien la forma de "vincular" un contacto a un contacto de BBM. Deberia clarificarse la funcion.
3-Cuando marco un numero de telefono, no aparece el numero telefonico al que llamo en la pantalla sino solo el nombre del contacto. Es muy util saber a que numero de todos los de su tarjeta de contacto, le estoy llamando.
4-En el historial de llamadas, deberian aparecer las llamadas entrantes y salientes, perdidas o no, en una sola oportunidad. Si alguien me ha llamado 4 veces y lo he llamado 3, por ejemplo, no deberia aparecer 4 veces en pantalla sino solo 1. Al tocar dicho contacto es cuando deberia desplegarse las 4 llamadas y las 3 realizadas. Ese problema existe tanto en la pestaña de llamadas Perdidas, como en la pestaña Todas.
5-la BATERIA !. la BATERIA!!! NO DURA NADA, SIMPLEMENTE ASI! NADA.! y SE CALIENTA!!
6- Definitivamente debe mejorarse la sincronizacion de contactos de un dispositivo del software 7 al 10. La mayoria de mis contactos no se transfirieron, ni al hacerlo a traves de Blackberry Link. Y trate de restaurar una copia de los contactos desde Blackberry Protect de mi antiguo dispositivo al Z10, y nada. Ahora me llaman y no se quien es. DEBE BUSCARSE LA FORMA DE ARREGLARLO.
7- la forma de silenciar rapidamente el telefono, no existe. La persiana negra(con la pequeña cama y la luna) que se baja para poner en stnad by el telefono y no entren llamadas o notificaciones, solo se despliega desde la pantalla inicial (pero teneindo cuidado de no abrirla completa, pues sino no baja la persiana sino el menu de opciones de configuracion, bloqueo de rotacion y otros) ESTO DEBE MEJORARSE como en el 9360 que con apretar la tecla Q, se cambiaba al instante a "vibrar". ESO ES SUPER UTIL Y DEBE BUSCARSE LA FORMA DE ARREGLARLO.

I am a Blackberry fan and support the brand and its products. I have a Z10 Blackberry since 4 days and BLACKBERRY should IMPROVE / SOLVE the following: (HOPEFULLY SOMEONE WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF TECHNICAL CHANGE IN PROGRAM, READ THIS)
1 - I can not make calls from the BBM screen. If someone has sent message and I have a chat, you should be able to call from there. Nor is there on the screen for SMS or Mail To power your finger on screen to despliegie the menu bar on the right, NOT THE OPTION "CALL". YOU SHOULD INCLUDE IT AND IS USEFUL!
Nor displays "CALL" by touching the contact and use the menu below to the right (the 3 vertical dots). YOU SHOULD INCLUDE IT !
2 - not well understood how to "link" a contact to a BBM contact. Function should be clarified.
3-When setting a phone number, do not see the phone number that I call on the screen but only the contact name. It is very useful to know what number of all of your contact card, I'm calling.
4-In the call history, should show incoming and outgoing, missed or not, on a single occasion. If someone has called me 4 times and I've called 3, for example, IT DOES NOT HAVE to appears 4 times on screen but only 1. Touching the contact is when should deploy the 4 calls and 3 performed. This problem exists in the Missed Calls tab, including the All tab.
5-the BATTERY!. the BATTERY! NOTHING LASTS NO, JUST SO! NOTHING.! and HEATED!!
6 - You should definitely improve contact sync software device 7 to 10. Most of my contacts are not transferred, nor to do it through Blackberry Link. And try to restore a backup of contacts from Blackberry Protect from my old device to the Z10, and nothing. Now if someone call me and do not know who is. FIND A WAY TO FIX IT!!.
7 - a faster way to silence the phone, does not exist. The black shade (with the small bed and the moon) which lowers to put in stand by the phone and incoming calls and notifications, only unfolds from the initial screen (but careful not to open it complete, since it does not lower the blind but the menu with configuration options, rotation lock, etc.) THIS MUST BE IMPROVED as in 9360 with Q key press is instantly changed to "vibrate". SUPER USEFUL AND YOU SHOULD FIND A WAY TO FIX IT .

Would like to add the following:
1. Why not make it so that when you open your landing screen and you show live, text msg, live emails, etc that you can touch the icon from that screen and go directly to text msgs, emails, etc.
2. Since the Hub is the core of this system why not make so that you can always go back to the hub with one touch no matter where you are.
3. Lastly for us reading challanged older folks please when trying to read small emails that you are able to enlarge and automatically reformat to fit the screen as earlier version of BB did.
Overall enjoying the phone , being my first full touch screen , but seem there are some very simple things that could be changed to make the experiance more user friendly.

Great phone but texting problem!

Love the phone (my first iPhone) apart from the signal. Put the sim in any other phone i get full signal.....iPhone 4 i'm lucky if i get 1 bar!
Even at the times my signal goes higher i can't send a text....keeps failing. Does anyone have any suggestions to try?

Have you tried resetting network settings in preferences? and perhaps shutting down your iPhone 4 and restarting it? It could help.

Thank you! It was in the Utilities Folder and I was able to move it to the home screen. Thank you so much for your help. I'm an old dude (64) and still learning my way around my beautiful Apple products (MacBook, iPad 2, and now the new iPhone 5). This is great ****! LOL!
