N97 Backup and missing messages - best memory loca...

Backed up my data (like a good little boy) via PC Suite last night awaiting the upgrade (currently V 10.0.012) and found all my messages and emails gone. Found the solution to this (from sidtrip) in the "blackhole" N97 bugs post. It appears the update can reset where your messages are stored, and the update had reverted this to the phone memory. I had moved the message to the mass memory as I'd had messages that the phone memory was full (although I could never find what constituted this - file manager showed very little in there).
Question is, where's the best place to hold messages; phone or mass memory?
Presumably Nokia think the phone because that's the default, so a second question would be, how do you solve the weirdness of a reportedly full (but not really) phone memory?

Supplementary question; how can you move messages from one memory to the other. I've now got some split across both phone and mass?

  • Mail is unable to find responses to emails and missing messages

Since making the change to apple mail about 90 days ago, I have had an ongoing problem with missing messages sent from my desktop and iphone. They are not in the sent folder or the separate project email folder. However, the arrow next to the original message shows that the original email was responded to. When I click on the arrow, I receive a message saying that it cannot find the message and that I may have deleted the message.
I moved the Mail folder from the Caches folder and still no help.
I am required to keep all email messages sent and received. But this is an ongoing problem that has resulted in several lost messages. If I cannot resolve this issue, I may need to switch to a different email program.

oops sorry, Mailbox Behaviors: Drafts, store messages on server is checked. Notes, Store notes in inbox is checked. Sent, Store sent messages on server is checked and it is set to never delete sent messages. Junk, nothing is checked and delete junk messages when: is set to never. i also use a mac laptop from time to time but the missing messages were sent from the desktop.

  • I accidentally clicked restore rather than backup and now all my memory since January has gone

Please can some advise me on what to do..
The last restore I done was in January so basically 7 months of memory is now missing.... IS there any way of getting all my memory back??
I will pay what it takes- this is so upsetting as I gave birth and some sentimental pictures on there... yes I know I should have backed up recently.

Keeping a single copy of an important photo on an iPhone is a poor plan. You should always move photos to a computer and then backup them up from there. Then if you want an extra copy on the photo move it back there.

  • Emails with no folder and missing message

This is a problem that has stumped tech support at the product specialist level for several months.
I have many emails that I can find when I do a search BUT they are no longer assigned to the inbox or folder and have lost their content. In the search window I an see the from/to/subject/date/time but when I open the email there is the subject at the top of a blank window. This is happening on my MacPro and my MacBook Pro.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jeffrey

Every piece of mail in Mail is in some sort of mailbox. The mail I'm talking about is no longer assigned to any mailbox that I can tell. I can only see these problem emails after a search of All Mailboxes. Looking at the individual mail boxes they do not show up and are not included in the individual mailbox count. I have 3 POP accounts and 1 IMAP. From what I can guess the problem is with my primary POP account.
Anyway, I followed the instructions in the link on your post and the same thing happened when I did this a couple of months ago on my Mac Pro. It reindexed everything and I lost all the problem emails. Contract updates, special client offers, etc.. Since my Mac Pro Mail did this I have been freaked out since I have no control when an email just disappears into limbo-land. Unfortunately my habit of thinking my emails will stay in my mailboxes forever is no longer valid.
I appreciate your insights, they should have worked but once an email has lost it's mailbox and content it seems there is no way to get it back. The odd thing is it happened on both my computers and their only relationship is Mobile Me and Back to my Mac. I have my POP servers set to leave messages on the server after they have been picked up. This problem will continue because my MacPro already has emails that keep falling in this hole after the last 150+ were purged.

  • Mail Badges Do Not Clear in Mountain Lion (and Missing Messages)

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, my new message badges do not clear automatically after reading my email.  If I get 5 new messages, and then read them all the app shows the message itself as being read, but the badge next to the account and in the dock shows 5 new message.
Also, sometimes Mail will not show any messages when I switch accounts or folders.  I have to close the app and reopen to see my messages.

You could try deleteing and re adding your mail account.  But make sure your account type is "IMAP" before doing so.  If it is a "POP" account, you will loose all of your messages so it is important you make sure the account type is IMAP before deleting and re adding.

  • Best way to view iPhone sms and imessage messages from backup

Hello I have sms and imessage messages that I would like to export from my phone or computer to be viewed on another device.  I know there is a way to view texts through third party software and I was wondering if there is one that is  particularly good at it or if there was a native way to do it?  Any help would be much appreciated as these texts will be used as evidence in a court case so some kind a log format with timestamps would be ideal.

I actually purchased GoodReader because it is easy to transfer files without iTunes.  I dislike the file sharing through iTunes.   You can use a Mac or PC.  Once I was in the app I clicked the "Wi-Fi" symbol which brings me to "WiFi-transfer."  It will show this --
    "WiFi status: ON
Use one of the following addresses exactly as you see them
    1. IP-address: http://192.168.0.98:8080 <-- Local LAN address the iPhone is broadcasting on.
    2. Bonjour-address http://Myname-iPhone.local:8080"
All you have to do is type one of those addresses into your browser. (Safari, etc.)
It will take you to a page that has iPhone Connection and a list of options.  You can either create a new directory within the application or use an existing one to upload a text file.  It's rather simple, you just select "Choose a file to upload" > Select your file > Press upload > Start the app and see your text/pdf/whatever file.
You can also connect to a server to download a text file, browse the web, or enter a url.  I see it also has an ICloud folder which I'm not sure if it integrates with Apple's iCloud or not, I think it does.  I'm not affliated with the app and I'm not saying you have to buy it, I'm just a happy user.
If you don't want to buy this app let me know I'll keep looking for a free or cheaper one for you if you want.

  • Best strategy for dealing with a mixed library and missing photos

Looking at the package contents of my iPhoto Library, it appears that I have a "mixed" library (i.e. part managed and part referenced). I'm not sure how this happened--I originally created this library about three years ago when I first bought my Mac with iLife '06, then later upgraded to iLife '08 which I'm currently still using. Maybe the default setting was to have a referenced library in iPhoto '06? Don't know. I don't recall ever changing this setting.
Anyway, I was starting to manually recover some missing photos but it just occurred to me that iPhoto is simply updating the aliases to point to the photos I'm telling it to use, and not actually copying the photos into the library (I'm guessing that only happens when you import a photo). This is not what I want. I want my library to be completely managed. I understand that, as my current Preferences settings dictate, any new photos I import now will be copied into the iPhoto Library. But for the existing photos that I am able to recover, I don't want to have to keep the originals outside of iPhoto.
I read in another topic about an application called AliasHerder and I'm thinking of trying that. The problem is, I no longer have original copies of all of the missing photos. I can recreate the folder structure for some of them but not all. I'm not sure what this will do to my iPhoto Library (I have emailed the vendor for clarification). I'm wondering if I'll still end up with a mixed library containing aliases that point to a non-existent file. Perhaps someone who has some experience with the tool could enighten me.
Based on suggestions given to me in previous posts I made, I tried both rebuilding my iPhoto Library and using the iPhoto Library Manager tool. Neither of these produced the results I had hoped for. Am I better off just starting off from scratch and creating a whole new library? And if so, what's the best way to get all of the existing photos from my current library to the new one? Do I export them out and then import them into the new library? Is there any way to salvage events, albums, etc. from my existing library or will I have to recreate these in the new library?
    Thanks in advance!

First check iPhoto's Advanced preference pane to make sure you're running a "managed" library.
Since you don't have the "source" photos available to relink to your best bet, IMO, would be to continue using your current library and delete those missing photos from it whenever you come across them in day to day use. If you click on the thumbnail of a missing photos and drag it to the iPHoto trash and empty it that will delete it from the library. This way you will retain all of your organizational efforts, i.e. albums, books, keywords, etc.
When you rebuilt with iPhoto Library Manager what did the resulting library contain? If it contained your photos without the missing photos you could use it. You would retain your albums, keywords, faces, places and other metadata. You will lose any keepsakes, i.e. books, slideshows, cards, etc.
Or, you could start over as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
1 - Move the existing library folder to the desktop
2 - Open the library package like this.
3 - Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
4 - Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.
You will end up with all your photos (no missing photos) in the same events as in the original library. But there will be no albums, metadata or keepsakes. It's for this reason I made the original suggestion of continuing with your current library above.
    OT
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

I get a 'No entry' Icon and a not supported on this type of Mac message. I cannot update either as anything up to 9.1.1 tells me I don't need it yet 9.1.2 tells me I need an eligable Logic Pro Version was not found in applications.
All of my files are stored in a separate hard drive with only the actual app having been on my Macbook. Should I just reinstall?

    Hi
To run Mouitain Lion you need to update Logic.
For the updaters to work the Logic application must be:
    a) Within the Applications folder, and not in any sub-folder
    b) Named "Logic Pro" with no extra numbers or spaces

  • Time Capsule best to dedicate for backup and usb external for other data or partition TC for dual

I have lots of video and photo and have 2TB drive on my iMAC and want to use TC for backup.
    1) Since alot of video and photo, can plug in via ethernet or "cable/usb" vs. wireless to back up my main iMAC?  Otherwise very slow via wireless and perhaps better to get Seagate Go Flex or WD and go Firewire right?
    2) I do need and like to share other data shared vs. just TC to Time Machine Backup, reading this community input, can I confirm that best practice is to let TC have as much dedicated space as possible for Backup and mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC?
    Here's my use case:
    1) Time Machine tied to TC for the 2TB via wired to main machine iMAC - I only have this 1 iMAC.
    2) Like to share data with iPhone and iPAD some pictures, etc...  so do this with USB port and see data on the shared drive via iPhone and iPAD - no need to backup - just viewing - but need wireless - how does iPhone and iPAD detect this device - do I need app or something to view shared drive stuff?
    3) Like to share and light backup for couple PC Win7 laptops just to get files back and forth or share things between family member - nothing intense - but can PC win7 laptops see the shared drive via IP setup or something like that?
Sorry for multi questions - my first iMAC so still stumbling around to see what works best for me.
    Thanks,

If I understand your question, depending on the signal strength, backing up over Wi-Fi can be rather slow.  An Ethernet connection would be much faster, particularly for the first backup, which will the the largest.  Backing up to a locally-connected disk will be faster still.

I'm not sure what you mean by "mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC".  It's not recommended to share the same volume for Time Machine output and other things.
need wireless - how does iPhone and iPAD detect this device - do I need app or something to view shared drive stuff?
If you mean that you need wireless to give an iPhone or iPad access to the Internet, a Time Capsule would do that.  If you want to give those devices access to content on a Time Capsule, that's still an immature technology, although things may improve with iOS 5 or updates beyond that.

A WIn7 computer will be able to see files on the drive(s) of a Time Capsule.  I haven't tried that, but instructions are available.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Hold Sleep and Home buttons for 10 seconds until your device restarts, so you will be able to use your device again. Finally, open Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup, and make a backup. The device will be backed up when it's plugged to the charger and connected to your network

Click here and follow the instructions. You may need to completely remove and reinstall iTunes and all related components, or run the process multiple times; this won't normally affect its library, but that should be backed up anyway.
