if you have no back up in icloud or itunes the best you can do is sync with your computer and get back  what you can from there

  • N97 firmware help

    Hi all.
So in South Africa, we have Vodacom and MTN who are our biggest mobile service providers. Both are full of nonsense. So I got my N97 from Vodacom with the old firmware 10.something and the MTN version already has the V11.one. We have different product codes for the phones compared to the Euro ones. I want to do the firmware upgrade but apparently I have to use the RSA product code in order to do this. Thing is, Vodacom hasn't even approved the latest firmware (even though their competitor, MTN has!) so my warranty could void if I update. I was wondering if by using the Euro product code, it would change my RSA device product code?
I'm just a little stuck, would love to hear of any help at all, even from someone at Nokia.
Btw, do I need to backup or does this device allow for a FW update that keeps all my information?

yes you need to do a back up always when youperform such operations on your phone. my advice to you is WAIT, it is a very expensive device and you will VOID your warrnaty by changing the product code. keep on calling your provider and keep on annyoing them as they are hte only ones that can release the update for your phone. again choice is yours but i would not adivse it as it will VOID your warranty and you will no longer qualify for free service if needed in case something happened to your phone. out of pocket expenses can get very high for high end phones.

  • Mac Crashes in the middle of Time Capsule backup --HELP!

Been using time capsule for several months without any issues. In fact, it has been great until recently. A week or so ago, my MacBookPro began crashing in the middle of a time capsule back up. Just suddenly the MAC curtain comes down and tells me I must restart. When I restart I get an error message which I have copied into this message. I tried erasing a whole months worth of backups but still get the same problem........is it possible my MAC has gotten a virus?? Anyone who can help, your comments would be greatly appreciated!!!

Got this problem fixed. It seems the 10.5.3 update corrupted the update somehow. You can perform a disk image repair on the existing backup or just delete all your old back ups and start from scratch which is exactly what I did. Good luck!

  • Unable to switch/open/close apps, shutdown or backup - HELP

    Hi guys,
I'm not so much of a newbie, but I'm kind of lost here and I need your help. I'm working on a MacBook Pro with Leopard.
    *Weird Behavior:*
    - I cannot open applications (no response when clicking on dock's icons).
    - I cannot close applications (no response when right-clicking on dock's icons).
    - When I click commandoptionesc, nothing is listed in the "force quit application" window.
    - I cannot switch between applications. Command+tab won't work. Expose` won't function. I can continue to work only in the active window.
    - The top menu bar stays on the last active application, and stops responding (no response even when clicking on the apple). After few clicks on it, it disappears.
    - I cannot restart, shutdown or log out.
    - My only option in this situation is to do "hard reset" by holding the power button for a few seconds.
    *When this behavior occurs:*
    *1. Connecting external Hard Drive*
I have an external HD, 250 Gb, connected via USB. I've been using it for a few months with Time Machine, as my backup volume. Suddenly this week, this "weird behavior" started occurring every time after I connected the drive (maybe when TM got into action). At first I assumed it was caused by a malfunction with the drive itself, so I formatted it. Didn't help. Whenever I try to backup - it fails to pass 46.8 Mb, and the "weird behavior" starts occurring again.
    *2. Starting DiskWarrior*
So I decided to preform some checks on my internal HD. I installed DiskWarrior, but when tried to run it, the moment it asked for administrator password - "weird behavior" started and I couldn't type the password (another of its symptoms).
My only option was to burn DiskWarrior on CD and boot from it. I did, and indeed it found some errors on my internal HD and rebuild the directory. It didn't find any problems in my external HD, as it is still formatted (blank). I thought maybe now the problem got solved, but then again - no. Still, trying to open DiskWarrior, trying to use Time Machine - all cause this weird behavior.
    *3. Starting SuperDuper*
I came to a conclusion that I need to reinstall Leopard, but I still needed to backup my system, and since Time Machine was not an option, I tried to use SuperDuper. But here again - when pressing the "Copy" button in the software, it asks for an administrator password, and weird behavior happens again, and I can't type the password (or do anything else but hard reset again).
So, something is definitely wrong with the system, but without performing backup, I can't reinstall Leopard.
I would appreciate getting your thoughts/suggestions, especially if anyone else has ever got into this weird behavior, and maybe found a way to solve it.
    thanks,
    -Omri

Install OS X on another hard drive. Hopefully you have one.
Put Disk Warrior and SuperDuper there.
It sounds like a problem that has existed with Leopard, more often back in 10.5.0/.1 but also seems to be back now with 10.5.4 judging by the threads, with USB devices, hubs, and cables. When FW doesn't work, usually USB does; but, when USB doesn't... try FW interface.
Beware of which USB/FW drive case enclosure you buy. Try these would be my suggestion:
http://www.macsales.com/firewire in bare case (transfer your drive) or full drive + case.
When you hard restart, the directory, journal, cache folders, and whatever files are open at the time in memory and have changes not written to disk can be damaged, corrupt.

  • Corrupt backup - help restoring without losing all my SMS'

    Hi all,
(not sure if i've posted this in the most appropriate place - wasn't too sure where it should go...)
I have been having issues with icloud since installing iOS 5 on my 3GS. I took the phone to the Apple Store and after much deliberation, they suggested that the only solution would be to erase the iPhone completely and restore as if it were new as there is most probably an issue with a corrupt backup (previously i had been restoring from backup as i didn't want to lose photos, data etc.).
So, i went away and did this, but obviously lost everything that wasn't held in iCloud. However, this process did fix the iCloud issues  - so, we have established that the backups that were being taken were corrupt somehow.
Now, given that i don't want to lose all my photos, sms' etc. I reverted back to the original backup (i.e. to the broken version) as it's still usable i just can't use the calendars.
It seems like i have to make a choice - have a fully functioning, working phone but lose my SMS history (unacceptable as i have SMS conversations from a close friend who sadly died) or have a phone that is semi-functioning but retains the text messages (not ideal as i use calendars on my mac to set up meetings etc. would be helpful to have this on my phone too!) .
I have searched and searched and searched the web for methods of exporting sms' onto my computer or back onto the phone but so far have been unsuccessful in all attempts. Ideally i would like the texts back on the phone, but if this isn't possible then at a minimum i want them to be on my computer (i am currently attempting to use the iphonebackupextractor but having issues with this too).
Does anyone know of a successful method of getting SMS' off iOS5?
Given that iCloud backups take the SMS' it's very frustrating that i can't save these somewhere on the cloud and have them download separately like i can with emails, calendars, contacts.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.  I do not believe there is anyway to save your SMS. At some point, you are going to loose them either as part of a phone upgrade or change, software crash, whatever.  One thing you could do is take screen captures of the SMS messages you want to save.  To do this, position the message on the screen and then hold down the Home and On/Off Button for a second or so.  You should see the screen go white for a brief moment simulating a camera flash.  Now your screen is captured in your photo library.  You could keep doing that until you've captured all of them.  Not necessarily ideal, but it's at least a way to make a backup of the conversations.
    Good luck.

  • After reinstalling 10.6 Time Machine deleting ALL backups - Help!

I recently reinstalled Snow Leopard. I then re-enabled Time Machine and let it run for a while. Then I discovered to my dismay that it had deleted several months of backups, and it looked like it was going to delete them all. So I turned it off.
Does anyone know why it is doing this? I have done reinstalls before and TM has picked up seamlessly from where it left off. But not this time.
A thought: I deleted the entire Caches folder from my Library - could that made TM think it needs to start from scratch with a brand new backup?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It may depend on exactly what you did.  If you just installed a fresh version of OSX "over" the old one, Time Machine should only back up the new version of OSX.
If you erased the HD first, then installed OSX and used Setup Assistant to transfer everything else from your backups, it shouldn't have done a full backup.  Sometimes, however, it does anyway.
If you erased, installed OSX, and used any other method to put your data back, yes, Time Machine will do a new, full backup.  You can't prevent it on Snow Leopard.   (There is a way on Lion).
If you really need the old backups, your only option is to let Time Machine start fresh on a different drive.  You can always see and restore from the old one via the Browse... option, per #17 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.

No.  That folder is automatically excluded from backups.

  • Need to restore trashed time machine backup - help

    Help..
I was recently burgled and my iMac and my backup drive ( on which I used TIme Machine) were taken.  So I lost everything. (No, i didnt have the time or extra monel to create another backup for off-sire storage, a mistake i will never make again)
I have an older ext harddrive that I used to use for Time Machine backups, but since i decommissioned it from being a backup drive, I deleted (trashed) the TM backup folder on it, and have written new data on there.
So far the situation is sounding grim, I know.   Surely there must be a chance of recovering at lease something from the drive.
Will things like MacKeeper  or Stelar phoenix Mac Data recovery  (or others) work?
Please help.  I have lost the majority of my life's work (some was on other drives thankfully).

MacKeeper is something to avoid.   Period.   There are data recovery services but they do tend to be expensive.   Type 'data recovery' in the search box above, you will certainly find some recommendations ... the link below is typical.

  • Icloud backup help

My ipad has seemed to have locked me out. My screen says "icloud backup" then it tells me that my ipad hasn't been backed up in 12 weeks. It gives me instructions to back it up, but they don't seem to work, can anyone help me?

Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • New or Backup--Help!!!

I got the iPad with Retina Display on Friday and love it.  My 4th iPad.  Tonight, I decided to connect it to my MacBook (summer 2012) to try to remove an app that went to the stage of installing but never finished.  When I hold down the icon to try to acquire the X to delete it, it doesn't have an X and won't delete.  This time  I chose new so that I could choose the apps I wanted.  With my New iPad (3rd Gen.) I restored from backup, and my iPad went crazy because I have some 300 + apps.  This time, when I set it up, not connected to my Mac, I just put the ones on my iPad that I wanted.  When I connected it to my MacBook tonight, it asked me if I wanted to restore from Backup or as New.  The Backup was actually a backup of my previous iPad, but I was afraid that Restore as New would remove everything I had spent the week getting in place.  What is the right next step???

You know, when I first saw your name, I thought you were Middle Eastern, but I am a retired teacher, well aware of the fact that people far too often place little importance on saying someone's name correctly. I always ask my students the right way to say their names. Sadly, some are so used to having it mispronounced, they default to the wrong one, and
Dah-veed becomes David. Personally, I like Dah-veed much better than David, similarly with May-lee-sa instead of Melissa. I truly appreciate your help. I recently sold my iMac because I never used it. That was my default backup site, and I had failed to see that I could now backup via the cloud independently. You showed me that. You also showed me the next step. Grateful. Thank you and God Bless!!

  • Time Machine NAS Backup HELP!!!

Have been in and out of a local mac store to no avail.
    Heres the story so far.....
A few weeks ago I made a time machine backup of my Macbook on a Buffalo linkstation NAS. I followed instructions from the internet in which I made a sparsebundle image on local HD, move it to NAS, then tell Time machine where the new file is (or something very similar to that)
This was done and after waiting 14 or so hours it completed.
The next day I went into timemachine and could travel back through the 3 backups it had made.
    All working fine
2 days later my laptop was stolen. This laptop has all of my teaching resources, all of my student marks on it. I felt relieved remembering that I had made my backup.
When I got another laptop a few days later from school I could connect to the NAS and see the sparsebundle image ...but.... the size was changing from 7mb, to 900mb, etc. Acting very strangely.
I left it at that and decided I would take it into a local mac store to help.
When they plugged in and connected they could see the share point but there was no file in it. No sparsebundle image. Now I freaked at this moment thinking I had lost everything, but, when I looked at the info from the NAS it showed that 63gb were used in the timemachine sharepoint. But we couldn't see it. And have been unable to see it since connecting with a Mac to the NAS.
I brought the NAS home and tried connecting to it with my PC and could see the sparsebundle, but it was now a Folder.
I copied that folder to an external USB HD and took it into the mac shop again.
    Now things get interesting.
It turns out the sparsebundle (now a folder) is 63gb large, when exploring it there is one folder within with almost all the data, in this folder there are 8000 odd files at 8mb each.
These files are "Unix Executable Files" and the technician at the mac store is stumped. The timemachine was working with laptop. That laptop stolen, new laptop can see sparsebundle but its behaving weird, next day no laptops can see sparsebundle but PC can, next day files in the sparsebundle are "Unix Executable Files"
Can someone please help. This backup is very important not only for my teaching resources but also a lot of student work.
I hope someone else has had a similar problem, I am at my wits end now.
    Please Help
    Daniel

All you could hope to do is copy the sparsebundle to a work drive then use Disk Utility to see if you can mount it and repair it. Otherwise you are out of luck as far as I can tell. If the sparsebundle is damaged and cannot be repaired by DU or if the sparsebundle cannot be mounted, then there's nothing one can do to recover the data.
I would strongly suggest you not entrust your backups to an unsupported backup system - the NAS - using an unsupported hack. TM does not support backups to a NAS device other than a Time Capsule. Even using a USB drive connected to an AEBS is not supported (although it will work.)
Personally I would recommend you start making multiple backups. Use TM for your daily incremental backups, but also use another hard drive and another backup tool to make a bootable clone of your hard drive. This way even if one backup goes awry you have a second one. Having taught for 30 years I understand the value of backing up the backups.

  • Project Backup Help! No disc burning device found?

Hello, I have a iBook G4 with a SuperDrive and Iam trying to backup a iMovie project. The version of iMovie is 6.0.2. The problem is that iMovie for some reason is not realizing that the SuperDrive is there. I go to File>Burn Project to Disc..., and I get "No disc burning device found, if you have an apple supported drive check your connections." I know it is an apple supported drive because it works with all other iLife programs-including iDVD. I find this annoying especially since I need the project backed up to put on another mac. The drive I have supports DVD-R(RW) & DVD+R(RW). I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks in advance!

    Hi-
Forrest, you're absolutley right about Tiger and DVD support, but, Patchburn will more fully allow utilization of the optical drives abilities, and provide better media support (broader compatibility).

  • Develop Settings lost after backup: HELP!

I have opened LR5 and found ALL the pictures have lost development settings that cost me hours of work.
Or better: when I open a folder in the Catalog the pictures are first shown for a couple of seconds with the edits (for example BW) than as originally imported. All the development settings are gone and can't be found anymore. The history is empty.
The last thing I did when I last used LR was a backup.
I opened the backup Catalog, but also this one doesn't show any edit.
Is there any way to recover.
I am honestly tempted by throw this software to the waste bin.
    Thanks for any help.
    Max Polix

While regular backups of the Catalog are a good idea, it should not really be necessary to make them every single session IMO. It is (of course) better to become confident and sure enough in the use of the software, that backups are needed only for "background" protection. If you don't trust the software, or don;t trust yourself with the software, that prevents you from progressing - so it is first necessary to understand what kinds of thing can go wrong, but also what kinds of thing cannot go wrong with LR.
Example reasons why your edits may seem to disappear from view, include firstly, that the images may have been Reset. This option applies default values to all the various adjustments, replacing whatever edited value they may have shown prior to that. However, those prior adjustments still remain accessible within each image's History; having being automatically logged to the Catalog as you have gone along, in this case as the previous step before this latest "Reset Settings" step.
Or perhaps the metadata settings may have been brought in from the file on disk, e.g. by accidentally selecting "Read metadata from file" instead of "Write metadata to file". If metadata had not previously been written out from LR to the file, then this would be like going back to its beginning "as first imported". Or if they had been saved, at some earlier point, you would be in effect recalling this earlier state again, to the top of the History. Again, however it may appear, this loading-in of the metadata is a NEW thing happening to each image. The previous step in the History still holds the PRIOR edits of the image, as they appeared before this happened.
So it is worth looking at the Catalog that you have - almost always information still held there is the key to retrieving things back to where you were before. It is important to resist rash action here: NO re-importing, NO Syncing folders, until you have worked out what the situation truly is. Then of rectifying whatever specific thing has got temporarily out of shape (most often, this is a matter of updating something within the Catalog itself), and then... carry on.
    regards, RP

  • ORACLE EXPORT BACKUP HELP

We have a DB about 20 GB in size. We have setup the database to be backed up using the EXPORT utility every 12 hours (1 am and 1 pm) using the NT scheduler. Every time a .dmp file is created along with a .txt file which outputs the status.
    I want to know -
Should the database fail, how does one recover the data backed up to the last backup? Is it using the IMP command and specifying the file name XXX.dmp?
Are there any other operations that need to be performed or is it as simple as it sounds (I am sure it is not).
Any help in the form of 1
    1.) Suggestions
    2.) Reference material to read
    3.) Solutions
will help me a great deal.
    Thank you

Without seeing the script or the output, it would be difficult for me to say. Most production databases are backed up in the following manner:
First the database is run in archivelog mode (this makes a copy of each redo log as it is cycled).
    A script is used that:
    Places tablespaces in backup mode,
Copies the datafiles to a seperate location or Tape,
Places the tablespaces in normal mode,
    Makes a backup controlfile
Copies all redo and archivelogs to another location or Tape.
In some cases a Full Export is also performed.
In the event of a database or tablespace failure, the last backuped datafile(s) in question are recovered then the archive logs are applied to recover the database up to the point of failure (not point of backup).
The export file can be used to recover database object dropped in error, or recover some data without recovering the entire database.
