N97 Flash flooding pictures

Ok I have read a lot of post complaining about the flash flooding pictures. This means that there is a side which seems whiter than the other, this side always matches the place where the flash is sitting. I have been looking at this since I got my phone 1 month and half ago.
At first I thought this was because of smudge all across the glass, you can even find tests I did on here /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&message.id=143299#M143299
But then I discovered something else. The Flash is recessed into the glass, so there is a gap besides the flash that leads through the glasses all the way infront the lenses/sensor. So the light will travel all the way inside the protecting glass. If the glass is completely clean the light will travel without problems to the other side of the glass. If the glass is smudged the light that hits the smudge will bounce back directly to the lens. The result is the flash flood, but this is different from just a normal smudge, because it concentrates on the left side, the flash side. A normal smudge would produce a small halo around bright objects. Hope you are following me here.
So the best fix would be blocking that gap in the flash recession. So I took a sharpie marker and painted all that gap. Then I tested taking a picture in complete darkness and with the flash on. First with the glass completely clean, the result was a perfect picture. Then I smudged the glass and the result was a normal smudge with a halo outlining bright objects. Then I cleaned the sharpie with a special cleaner and took another picture with the smudge, the result was a flash flood.
So I might be wrong but this seems to be the reason of the flash flooding the pictures, if you want to experiment also, you may grab a marker and paint the whole gap where the flash is sitting, this is the wall that separates the flash and the glass. If you do so please leave feedback here. I also want to note that I also have some small scratches caused by the cover.

hello dcastrog
this is an interesting post you have written and i left a kudo for you.
my n97 is about 2 weeks old.
the first few photos i took were brilliant. then i noticed that they are starting to have a yellow section on them.
it is difficult to explain.
the photos look like they are paper reproductions that have been printed on glossy paper that has slipped in the printer.
i don't know if it because of the flash, as you have mentioned.
i just did a test, and i found that the lense itself was dirty and so after cleaning it the photo came out better.
i will keep your post in mind and continue to monitor my camera and see what it does in the future.
i will be watching for any further discolourations.
thanks
from tatiana

  • N97 Flash Flood problem (white light in photo)

The most annoying thing about N97 is that when you slide the camera cover every time it scratches the camera area and in short period it could result a permanent scratch which causes the part of the flash to enter into the camera causing a flash flooding in the picture taken.
i also had the same problem and i solved it
so i like to share it with everyone
    please see the video here

I had the camera cover and GPS Antenna replaced on my N97 a year ago under warranty, it was a known issue and should be done free of charge !

  • When taking pictures with my iPhone 4S with flash the pictures are blue

When taking pictures with my iPhone 4S and when I use the flash the pictures come out blue but wen I don't use the flash the pictures come out great. Can someone please answer my question to why that is happening

Do you have a case on your phone? Many cases get a reflection from the sides and bleed light over the picture.
The flash is naturally green/blue colour anyway..so it could be just that.

Yep. Exchanged for black and that solved it. Too much light leaks through the glass on the white phone.

  • Everytime I take a picture using my flash, the picture comes out all foggy

Everytime I take a picture using my flash, it comes out foggy!! What can I do to stop this??

The better designers are taking this into account. People should look at the case they are about to purchase. If the case comes within about an 1/8 inch of the flash, it's apt to be a problem.

  • Flash clouds pictures

The camera on my iPhone 4S works fine if I don't use the flash.  When the flash is used the picture is just a haze.  Is there any way to adjust the flash?

Figured it out.  I had forgotten to remove the plastic film on the back cover.

  • N97 Flashing Envelope problem

    Hi Guys,
Just got my new nokia today and have only transfered phone numbers accross to the phone from my old Nokia. since doing that I now have a constant flashing envelope on the top right corner of the screen.
I don't have a new message or any unread messages that I can find. And I can't see how the memory could possibly be filled with only 30 numbers.
    Any thoughts???

  • Flash Player Picture goes Zig-zag when scroll bar used in Explorer 11

Have a Gallery slideshow using Flash Player on our website but when you use the scroll bar it goes Zig-Zag.

Okay, this is the most interesting problem I've seen today.  It looks like a bug, but we're going to have to reproduce it to fix it.
The following basics would be very helpful in this regard:

At that point I can get a bug filed for you.

  • N97 Flash (YouTube problem)

For my White N97 its lagging while you are watching Youtube Videos in full screen(Youtube Desktop Version), if you tap on the video for any reason (to go back, play another Video..Etc) the whole window and browser will be closed and any other open applications or widgets will be closed too (Basically the Phone will close all opened processes) !!!!
In my 5800, the Youtube works great and without any problems !!! I hope Nokia provide a firmware update as soon as possible !!!!

  • Pictures come out cloudy when using the flash for pictures

Is there an adjustment for this or is the phone defective?

Did you take the plastic film on the back of the phone? Do you have a case on it? Did you put some kind of protective film on the back? Any of these things could cause the light from the flash to diffuse abnormally across the lens of the camera.

  • When taking photos ,with flash the picture ends up with a blue hue?

I have recently upgraded my software to the latest 4.3.5 os. Coincidently I am unable to take decent photos with the flash in low light, instead I get this blue over the whole photograph. Is this right? Beforvthe upgrade I could take goog flashed photos. any ideas?

Disregard, it was the background problem.  Can't figure out how to delete this discussion!

  • Does iPad air have flash for pictures and video rec.?

Does iPad Air have flash for camera and video rec.?

Do you mean flash the program? or flash as in a camera flash?
The answer to both is no.
Apple products do not natively support the flash program. ANd iPads do not have the LED light for a flash.

  • The ipad mini does not have flash for pictures. Is there an app that can add flash for low light?

Since the ipad mini does not have flash for taking photos in low light situations I'm wondering if there is an app that one can use with flash?

Since there's no flash mechanism on the device, I doubt there's an app. You can't control what isn't there.

  • Flash in picture before or after or in transition, white or black

Why has this not been fixed? I have done everything that has been outlined to no avail.
It almost fixes it then it comes right back. Getting real tired of it.

    Hi
*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences and is named. com.apple.iMovie.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.
    Yours Bengt W
