N97 GPS poor / news from Vodafone (germany)

Since i just returned my first N97 for poor GPS quality
and now am returning my second N97 for poor GPS quality AND
an american keyboard (qwerty), because im german in want my qwertz-keyboard
I just called the vodafone support service.
(sidenote: have to say that this is the best support service ive seen so far on this planet!)
They just told me that I will have to wait for another week to get my new N97 (the third!), because
they sent the shipping back to NOKIA, because they had too many returns regarding the
GPS quality (fix and loss) with this phone. It seems that NOKIA changed something to have a lot
improvements, maybe in hardware too. So vodafone is just waiting for another shipment of NOKIA
where the GPS quality is fixed. And of course i dont care if I have to wait another week as long as
I have a working GPS in it.
Seems that NOKIA really had problems with the first productions.
Glad that vodafone is telling them and taking care of this issue
cheers.
ps: the rest of the phone is fine, although a lot is still beta, mine is working really fine,
because was able to free up to 48 MB of my C: drive.I still belive this solves a lot of issues with
this phone. detailed articles:
/discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=149756
Some other firmware updates will do the
rest and im quite confident that the software will mature as it was with my N95.

I don't know if this solution will work for everyone else with GPS/Sat nav problems but I have found a solution that works for me.
I have had some success using Ovi maps/Sat nav when only having the integrated GPS on the N97 switched on but that was in a very big open field – which isn’t very useful.
But at home, outside in my garden I was unable to get a GPS signal using the integrated GPS only. I tried many times, left the phone standing up as directed in the manual/web site without any success. With the network based GPS switched on I had been able to get a GPS signal.
But then I noticed something. While I have the N97 charging either at the computer or when plug into the wall, I have been able to get a GPS signal/Sat nav within a couple minutes just using the integrated GPS, yes the N97 picks up my location indoors and the signal remains even after I remove the charger. So I’m assuming this with work with a car charger as well (I haven’t got round to getting a car charger yet!)
I hope this solution works for others with GPS issues

No. Vodaphone Egypt and Vodaphone Qatar are two different carriers. They have the same parent company, but you can not use a phone locked to Vodafone Egypt with a Vodafone Qatar SIM.

  • N97 GPS Problems - Hardware or Software?

Sorry to start yet another thread on the N97 GPS problems, but reading through all the threads there seems not to be any clear conclusion as to whether or not the issue is a software/firmware one, in which case potentially fixable, or a hardware one, in which case the phones have to be sent back and replaced.
My personally feeling is that it's hardware.  Some people have no issue but many have a problem.   I have the same issues with losing the satellites, poor GPS accuracy, etc. both with Ovi Maps 3.01 and with Google Maps, which again to me points to a hardware fault.  Updating firmware from v10 to v11 made no difference to GPS performance.
So, I wonder if people agree with me that it is a hardware issue and the phones have to go back, or if there is some hope of it being a software issue and thus being fixed?
Anyone had any success in sending back an N97 for replacement because if the GPS issue? Mine is a UK 3 branded N97 black, free as part of a contract, and I have a feeling that 3 are likely to resist replacing the phone if they can.
    Mark

I believe that the GPS problem in N97 not a hardware problem but a software problem with the Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.
    Below explanation why:
I have been using Nokia Maps 2.0 on my previous phone – E71 for more than one year. It worked pretty well and stable. One important remark – it is important to configure the server for AGPS under Settings well...
About one and half month ago I decided to install on my E71 the newest Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.0. And ... immediately my problems started. The GPS performance worsened – I was continuously getting messages about GPS lost, recalculating and usually concluding that I am on a parallel road to the road which I was actually driving – horrible...
Also my colleague with N82 made the same mistake (installed Maps 3.0) and got the same problems.
Because of this problems I have removed this new version on my E71 and went back to Nokia Maps 2.0. And guess what? - The problems were gone!
Two weeks ago I bought my N97. It comes only with Maps 3.1 so I was expecting problems. And ... indeed I have them all. Bad thing is however that I cannot go back to Maps 2.0 on N97...
I tested GPS accuracy with three different phones (N97, E71, E75) and two versions of Nokia Maps. What I can see is that its normal to be about 80-100 meters on average. This is not a specific N97 issue! And apparently should not be a problem because Nokia Maps 2.0 works great even if this application shows accuracy of 100 m. Probably thanks to the Assisted GPS.
So my conclusion is that it is not a hardware problem but a problem with (a part of) the software of the Nokia (Ovi) Maps 3.x ! Maybe with a GPS Driver? Or the functionality of the assisted GPS?

  • N97 GPS cannot get a fix..

My N97 gps is having difficulty getting a fix on my position.
i was side by side with my fiance E71, and hers gets  a fix in less than 20 secs. Whereas my N97 takes a long time, and after that, It just say unable to get a fix on the locatin, GPS works poor in enclosed area.
    Any help?

I do not think that the N97 hardware is a flaw because I have tested it, see my other feedback in the forum and what I did.
In brief, I get a GPS fix in 1 second with a 8cm ultra thin copper wire coiled and hidden under double-sided tape under the orignal label antenna. This is done by first coiling this wire over a double-sided tape and then purely slightly peeling the original anntena tape, and placing this double-side tape (with wire) onto the plastic. Then stick the original antenna tape back into position: all fully concealed, without screws or opening the phone.
Even, if I remove this antenna extension, I still get a GPS fix between 5 to 15 seconds. I will say the antenna extension increase the signal strength of GPS signals and give a GPS fix in 1 seconds instead of 5 seconds, and also help to provide GPS fix under (metallic roof) shelters. Without the antenna extension, it is not possible to get a GPS fix under metallic-roof shelters.
I installed Garmin Mobile, and accidentally found a file 20006e9c.sis in the private folder in the mass memory which help to get a GPS fix under 15 seconds, under all weather conditions. Then when I remove this file, I cannot get a GPS fix under 15 seconds, it took about 5 minutes to get a GPS fix under clear sky, no signal under bad sky.
Now I tried with Nokia Map. Without Garmin and the file, it took 5 minutes to get a GPS fix under clear sky, and no signal under bad sky.
Now I tried Nokia Map after Garmin activated (with the file), and I get GPS fix between 1 to 15 seconds under all conditions. And with the antenna extension, it is between instant 1 second to 5 seconds.
So I will say that the N97 hardware is ok, except the GPS software. I cannot see the private folder in the phone memory as it is blocked (my phone is not hacked). I believe installation of Nokia Map created some new files in the private folder but every installation create different file in the folder (just like Garmin).
Some N97 work well because the file created in the private folder improves the GPS fix while other files deteriorate the GPS fix.
My suggestion: if possible, remove and re-install the Nokia Map in the phone until the file created is the one that improves the GPS fix. Sorry, I only know the needed file for Garmin is 20006e9c.sis which should be in the private folder. For Nokia Map, I do not know what file, and anyway I cannot access the phone memory.
Cheers! I believe in the Nokia Equipment, though not in the firmware, especially the GPS software

  • N97 GPS problem!

There has been already some discussion about GPS but I want to start new one topic-
I would like to know is there any N97 or anybody which N97 GPS is working fine without any problems?
Today I made my first real navigation trip and I saw that my N97 with newest maps and phone sw was useless.
GPS signal is going to lost very often and my position arrow is coming too late for corners and turns. Also speed shows very often 0km/h and sometimes it goes totally grazy when poistion is lost and it's starting to calculate route again and again and it never ends without starting whole navigation from the beginning.
Well when I was returning back to my home today i decided to use my Nokia LD-3W Bluetooth GPS receiver and when I used that and also phone's A-GPS then MAPS  worked very well. None of problems.....
I truly hope that this GPS problem exists on every released N97 at this time because then it would be most propably SW related problem, not HW problem. Of course it can be also HW problem but I do not belive that.
Also some other Nokia phone models have had almost similar problems (with early sw versions) but those has been fixed by phone sw later on. But I must to admit that not so bad that I faced with N97 today.....

I believe it is a hardware problem. I use GPS Data all the time and it never fails that my N95-3 and E71-2 both get a good GPS signal that doesn't fluctuate constantly or randomly go in and out. It doesn't matter what application I'm in either, whether that be Google Maps, or Nokia Maps. The N97 has a diffiicult time finding and keeping hold of a GPS signal. Both of my N97's (first and second) are exactly the same.
The antenna is the problem. There is no doubt in my mind. All the software in the world can't make up for an antenna that can't keep a signal. It can mask the problem to a certain extent, which supposedly Nokia Maps 3.1 does, but it doesn't solve the real issue here which is **bleep** hardware.
Even on days and nights where there are not clouds in the sky, I get the "GPS does not work well indoors" error message while driving around in my car, trying to use the "GPS Data" application. My N95-3 and E71 never tell me that.
Nokia, as much as I like them, screwed this phone up hard, and to be honest, they've been doing it for some time.

  • £750 bill from Vodafone as iPhone sent 20GB last month, please help!

    Hi
I have just received a shock data bill from vodafone. Apparently my iPhone has been using between 500 MB - 1GB a day for the last month.
I have had the phone for almost 18 months and cannot work out why this has suddenly happened. I have not downloaded a new app or changed my usage at all.
I checked the phone and it states that it has sent 20.7 GB of data, and received 1.7 since last reset (October).
I only use the phone for calls, texts, and social networking. I have wifi at home and barely use cellular data.
I contacted Vodafone as I wish to dispute the bill (I am happy to pay for what I have used, but I cannot see how I have used this!)
They state that if I can show it is a software issue, they will write off the £750. At first they suggested I send it to them and they would check if it was software or a fault, until they realised it was out of warranty, then they said they can't look at it unless I pay £150.
They suggested giving apple a call, but I looked on website and to call them will be £25 and I am not sure if it will resolve the issue.
What can I do? The phone is still on iOS 6.0, I realise the data issue could possibly be resolved by updating, but am reluctant to do this before the phone is checked out (if I can get apple to check it out). For the time being I have restricted all data to wifi.
Is it likely to be a fault/software issue? I have not sent any files anywhere etc. If I drive to my nearest apple store (at least an hour away) will they look at it/are they likely to help/admit it is software and give me some proof for vodafone?
    Please help!!

Contact the Apple store directly (or Verizon) as Apple (nor Verizon for that matter) monitor these forums.

  • Porting Issues from Vodafone

I took out a new EE contract last Wednesday (1st of July), gave my PAC code for my number to be transferred from Vodafone. My port date was set for last Friday (3rd July), i had a confirmation text from EE on that date saying my number would be ported. By the end of the day my EE sim now had the number i was porting, however all calls and texts were still going to my old vodafone sim. This is still the case. I have been told to wait until midbight on Friday, then 5pm the following day, then "it will sort itself out by Monday morning", then "wait until Tuesday morning" - all have passed and i still do not have a funcitioning EE service. I have now been told that there is a know issue with Vodafone and it's currently affecting any Vodafone customer porting their number. EE can now not give me a resolution date and won't give me any further information. I spoke with the vodafone porting team who said there are no issues on their side. Given i am less than 14 days into my contract, currently i can only see cancellation as the option, reading some of the horror stories on here it does concern me this could take weeks to resolve. Not a great first impression for a new customer EE

Cancellation would not help your situation, if you cancel your contract you'd be unable to take your number with you because half your number is still with Vodafone and the other half is with EE.
This is also not EEs fault entirely. When you port a number from one network to another, the network has to ask your old network to release the files associated with your number. In your case Vodafone hasn't released all your files, so not all your files has been transferred across to EE.
While I completely agree you have had appalling customer service, completing a port manually (a specalist porting team has to manually port your files across, this can take a while due to them having to wait for permission to access Vodafones mobile number porting system) can take time.
If you contact EEs specialist complaints department on 0808 121 3333, they'll be able to get the ball rolling a lot quicker than normal customer services can.

Import into the iMac using  iMovie 11and played back full screen on the iMac has the look of  soft VHS tape, not tack sharp and pronounced video lag when panning or when a subject moves across the screen.  Has anyone else resolved a similar issue? • Locked iPhone 3g from Vodafone

My brother bought locked iPhone 3g from Vodafone Egypt and now he won’t to move to another carrier,
but iPhone is locked to Vodafone Egypt
and they say we are not authorized to unlock your iPhone to all carriers.
How can I unlock my brother iPhone even if I will pay fees?

    Julian,
I think he wanted to say they are expected to offer phone official unlock since Vodafone Egypt sells Iphones at the full price of the factory unlocked units sold in many other countries.
I am in the same boat as he is; however I took an extra step and discussed this with Vodafone Egypt; since the phone I bought from them is about 4 years old now and of course I moved to a newer one (factory unlocked this time ) and I am still their customer anyways.
Vodafone Egypt responded they don't mind unlocking the phone (as an exception since they don't officially offer this option); however they said they don't have the software needed to perform the unlock, they suggested I should contact Apple directly and they will be more than happy to authorize the unlock if contacted by apple.
Now Apple, can you help with this one ?

  • E61 from Vodafone. Not found by NSU

    Hi there.
Recd branded E61 from Vodafone on Tuesday this week (19SEP06). Details:
    1.0610.04.04
    19-04-06
    RM 89
    Nokia E61
Product code on label = 0531060
    Model E61-1
Downloaded NSU yesterday (21SEP06) and followed all instructions. Only error is that NSU does not find the phone.
    Should it? Any ideas?
    Thanks
    MJ

so today I called Vodafone. Why? because they placed a **bleep** looking card in the E61 box on which they claim they have "experts" ready to help us get our new phones up and running and in good shape. Trust me, they are no experts; the kid I got today took several attempts at understanding my very simple question about updating an operating system.
However, I had a brain-wave. I tried the whole process on my daughter's laptop. Everything worked fine, connecting first time and, yes, NSU told me that there is no update available for my phone. Same as you, I have 1.xx and there's a 2.xx out there somewhere.
Regarding my own laptop, who knows why it had problems. The security system was disabled and still it couldn't find a phone on the end of a USB cable (even though PCSuite can find it...).
It's a mystery, but we love our toys; so we persevere.

  • N97 GPS Fault??

I have a nokia branded N97 which has the latest firmware updated.
I am having aproblem with the GPS signal though. I have AGPS set to on with a valid data connection and the correctr server set up (supl.nokia.com).
However it really struggles to hold any GPS signal at all.  Getting an initial hit isn't too much of a problem but it can't keep hold of it. When tracking using Maps or Garmin, it is constantly a good few seconds at least behind where I am which makes using the sat nav very difficult / virtually impossible. It regularly then drops the signal and will pick it up again anything form 2-20 seconds later.
Is this a fault with the handset / GPS / firmware does anyone know?? How is the best way to check??
I have tried a friends N97 side by side and this track perfectly so I can't see it being a signal issue. The weather is clear and I'm not in a built up area, yet it still regularly fails me.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Chris

Hi Supersizechris, I'm from Singapore. I've exactly the same problem as yours. Mine N97 sent to the servicing center on the 10 Sept 2009 till now it still @ the servicing center. I think this N97 GPS is the hardware problem. I've this problem since day one day. I thought Nokia will fix this problem on their next coming firmware but I've flash my phone to V12 still the same. This week I suppose able to collect my phone & hope Nokia will fix the GPS problem. If not I'm gonna to ask Nokia for refund.
