nope it gives you the ability to see your wallpaper better, plus if you have email widget and stuff you don't want everyone to see its easy just swipe and its gone. i actually think it s a nice feature . its keeps the home screen clean, less cluttered that is the purpose of it

  • N97 Home Screen Problems

Can somebody please help me here, I've just got an N97 as upgrade from N95 and I'm tearing my hair out already.
The widgets on the main home screen, ie the box you can amend via 'Add Content' with the contacts/calender/mail/camera or whatever ppl want to put there, that surely should shortcut to that partic application? I have the above 4 shortcuts in a horz line across screen but cant access them indiv.
I just get the option 'Settings/Remove/Change wallpaper' when I touch the box, I get the same kinda problem with the Favourite Contacts box, I cant quickly call or text anyone.
I must be something really stupidly wrong but it took so long to get the N97 to sync with Outlook properly that I'm getting frustrated.
Any help would be really appreciated.

  • N97 - volume not working on home screen

Hey all - My latest n97 undocumented feature (read bug) is that when I'm on the home screen I cannot adjust the volume using the hard keys. It does work if I go into the music player but when I come back out to the home screen it still doesn't work. The phone is definitely unlocked.
Any ideas? Anybody else having this problem?
I really want to like this phone but lots of bugs like this added to the too small amount of RAM plus the design flaw in the camera lens cover makes it very hard.
Hopefully some of these bugs will be fixed in future firmware updates but Nokia you should've put more RAM in this device. I suspect you know this already and when you come out with the N97 v2 with more RAM it will just be an admission that you made a mistake. I won't be buying it and I won't be buying another Nokia. I also have a scratch, not yet affecting image quality but given that I've taken really good care of the phone I think it will be just a matter of time until I get a scratch across the lens or flash.

Its a memory leak problem I think. A simple restart will fix it.

  • N97 mini - blank/unresponsive home screen & nokia ...

I have been having problems with my Nokia N97 mini.  It froze yesterday, and I removed and re-installed the battery to restart the phone.  When the phone came back on, the email widget had changed from Nokia email to the messaging email option (the one that you get under the messaging icon - it doesn't download in real time and rarely downloads the full message).
It froze again and I had to re-start it again, and this time, the home screen went completely blank.  It either shows the little boxes for the various widgets (they're empty), or the screen is completely blank.  Occasionally the screensaver (slideshow of images) comes on.  The home screen is completely unresponsive, and the only way I can get the phone to function is by pressing the menu button and navigating from there.
I have tried to re-load my nokia email so as to fix the email problem, but whenever I go to the "Email setup" or "Sett. Wizard/Email" options (under applications) the phone freezes.
I should point out that my phone downloaded Nokia Messaging 10.2 today, and the update history section says that the update was successful, but I'm still having serious difficulties.
I have tried restoring factory settings, but that didn't help.  I'm seriously considering trying a  hard reset of my phone but am unable to back up my information using Nokia Ovi Suite.
Does anyone have any suggestions re how I can start enjoying my beautiful phone again?

I would recommend trying the hard reset. If you can't backup using Ovi Suite you could trying either synching your phone with Ovi Suite or MS outlook or backing up to a memory card. Better still do all the above to be sure.

  • Empty favorite contacts on my home screen, N97 min...

    Hello,
I am trying to add my favorite contacts to the home screen of my brand new Nokia N97 mini.
When I add the "favorite contact" from the content list, an empty (light black color) bar appears on my homescreen while I would have expected to have the contact names/pictures as  have 5 contacts marked as favorites.
Moreover, when I click on this bar, nothing happens, it looks lie the 4 spots are empty!
I have tried many other approaches (delete all favorite contacts, keep only one favorite, add new contact and set it as favorite) but it never worked!
For your info, in the content list I have "favorite contacts" and also "favorite contacts II". Is this due to the fact that I have 5 favorite contacts?
    Could someone please help me?

Hi, restoring the backup, could have caused your problem, try a soft reset and JUST restore your contacts and calender, NOT settings ( the settings from previous software could cause conflict/problems, better to set up phone again manually )
    Good Luck

  • Nokia N97 empty home screen freezes out of nothing

Last week my Nokia N97 type RM-505 was delivered, and I had to hard reset it three times since then. I have updated the firmware to V 11.0.021. The problem is as follows:
The home screen freezes totally out of the blue. All the widgets are on screen, but empty, including the selected profile and date next to the clock. The only thing that works is the clock itself. The contacts shortcut has disappeared as well.
By using the menu button I can still perform most tasks on the phone, the phone is much slower however and the battery runs out faster. Reinstalling the firmware or going back to factory settings have no effect at all. The phone has been in this state for up to six hours, either on or off (with the battery taken out).
The problems seems to occur at random, once when I turned it on in the morning, once when using it and twice while not using it but when the phone was turned on. I used a hard reset (*#7370#) the first two times and the third time after I used the *#7780# reset.
I was thinking of returning the phone, but the last time it returned to normal after typing in *#0000#. I couldn't make out however if this was the cause for the phone going back to normal or that it was just a coincidence.
At this moment my phone functions normally, but I am quite worried that it will freeze up again and I have to perform a hard reset again. I have read on a Dutch forum that somebody had exactly the same problem, so if there are more people here please report, hopefully with a permanent solution.
    Solved!

    Hi...
I was having the exact same problem with an N97 I bought 5 days ago. It randomly froze and all I could see was the clock working. But an added problem I had was that my screen and keys were both locked so I couldn't even perform a hard reset. So basically my phone was frozen, all my widgets were blank and all the keys were locked. The screen unlock key wouldn't work either and opening the slider wouldn't unlock the keypad either. My phone doesn't have a warranty either so I was on the verge of being royally scr**ed.
Luckily after searching around for a few hours, I found these steps to get the keypad unlocked long enough to perform a hard reset:
    1. Take out the battery and reinsert after 1 minute.
    2. Connect the phone to a computer and let charging begin.
    3. Turn on the phone with the slider open.
    4. This is important: Do NOT let the screen lock. Press buttons, the keypad button on screen, anything.
    5. Hopefully once a few buttons are pressed the numeric keypad on screen should come up.
    6. Use *#7370# and default code 12345 to perform hard reset (or soft, depending on your choice)
    7. Phone is back in working condition.
However once I had performed all these steps and reinstalled my widgets and stuff, I woke up this morning to find my phone stuck again with the keypad locked. After reading this post I connected my phone to the computer to unlock the keypad and removed the email widget. After restarting my phone it seems to be working just fine. Hasn't gotten stuck or anything for a few hours now. Hopefully the problem won't resurface and I will be able to update to the new firmware and have this issue resolved once and for all. Will post updates if the problem happens again.
    Thanks for all the info!

  • Nokia N97 show up on the PS3 home screen

Last night i turned on my PS3, the phone show up on the home screen. i was able to listen to music and access photo of the phone. I thought that was neat. Anybody try it yet?

It's part of the DNLA (uPNP) stuff. It is quite neat. I've been using it since the N91 8GB days. Most Nseries phones work with the PS3 in this way although playing high quality videos sometime stutter, easier just to copy them to the PS3.
Also you can connect your phone using USB mass storage and the drives or memory card will show up in the PS3. If you have a PS3 with card reader ports (like the 80 GB version I have) this is not such a big deal but well another option.

  • Nokia n97 mini home screen keeps disappearing

    Hi all
I have only had my 97 mini for a week now and it is by far the worst phone I have ever owned. I have spent over 12 hours trying to get it working correctly, but alas I am ready to give up. If I leave the phone sitting for over 15-30 minutes and come back to it my home screen is gone. Only the two black key boxes are left at the bottom of the screen with no text in them. I have no clock either just my wallpaper and signal strength.  To reload the home screen I press menu key and look in open apps, then hit home icon to reload the widget. I have tried a hard reset, updating firmware and now formatting memory and hard rest. So far no luck.
I have found when I have no messaging services loaded ie. exchange or nokia email, the issue it is not as frequent.
Can anyone shed any light on what the cause of this isuse is please? I am ready to throw it out the window. My sony C702 had a few issues, but they are very minor when compared to this piece of crapola.
What a wast of time, Nokia can I jhave my 12 hours back please????
    Ice

I,ve had this problem and the only thing you can do is long press the menu key, elect home screen and it will come back ! Very annoying, but tends to be intermittant, may go a few weeks without a problem, then occur for several days, if you get a solution please post !!

  • Email Notification on Home Screen

Hi everyone, todays N97 problem appears to be as follows..........
After going through half a dozen email clients i finally went back to the default one installed in the phone and for the past 4 days i have been using it without any problems what so ever. Today though, after recieving a new email, i retrieved it from my inbox, read it and deleted it (phone memory) as i have done previous days. Todays problem seems to be that the new email notification on the home screen is still there after deleting the last new email.  Even after i mark all the emails in my inbox and delete them and then re-connect to my inbox they appear again, this has only started to happen as of today.
Ive seen in other forum posts that this cant be de-activated? How can this be the case if i have been using the client for 4 days and im only having this problem now? Its a notification, so technically of course it can be removed or stopped.
Please please please help with this solution, the only one i can find at the moment is switching the handset on and off which isnt a solution what so ever.

exactly.. This was very unwelcome.. I undrstand the contact bar widget has limited space to put everythin we want.. But in shortcut bar home theme y did they remove email notification.. Tht was very unwise..
Moreover we should be able to choose what we'd need on the home screen.
Moreover the Contacts bar home screen widget takes an awful amount of RAM! Abt 5-6MB i guess.. Lets see what v60, as rumored, has to offer..

  • N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

I have my nokia N97 almost a week now. This morning opera mini froze and I couldn't turn it off so I removed the battery. After reinserting the battery and turned the phone on I got the White screen of death (WSOD), just a white screen with the word nokia on it. I tried to boot it without the simcard and also waiting 30+ minutes before reinserting the battery. But I still have de WSOD...
Do I have to keep it on to drain the battery or are there other methods to fix this problem. I don't feel like sending it to Nokia because I have to wait more than 2 weeks before it's fixed...
The past 2 weeks I have used it intensively, installed a lot of apps. Put 300+ songs on it and and some movies. I had the email widget on the home screen, I heard that's one of the problem on other forums...
Any ideas how I can boot up normally....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    WSOD
    Hard Reset
    The combination is:
Shift + Space bar + Backspace + Power your phone
    Instructions to bypass WSOD:
All you need is: Methodology 1 as posted by some other user
    N97
    Charger
    Follow these steps:
    Turn off your phone.
    Insert charger.
Remove charger right after screen lights up.
Wait a couple of seconds till screen turns off and just after that press power button.
After standart vibration notification just put your charger in.
VOILA! You can insert your PIN again!
I am using this method for almost a month and it seems that this is only one way to boot up my N97.
It would be nice to hear if this method works for you
Anyway, I have found a solution, that works for me everytime the WSOD comes up. It goes like this when WSOD keeps coming up:
    Instructions to bypass WSOD:
All you need is: Methodology 1 as posted by some other user
    1. Pull battery and re-insert it.
    2. Power up the phone by holding the "Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" and wait 30 seconds or so.
    3. After the wait the phone should come up normally asking for the SIM passcode and everything is fine.
"Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" is a sort of "soft reset", it keeps all the installations and everything as opposed to the "hard reset".
Hope this helps, and let's all hope that Nokia QA start testing their smartphone software with a little more care. I cannot imagine that normal people would live with such blatant bugs.
    My solution to yesterday experience
    What I have done:
    1. Switch Off Nokia N97 by pulling out the battery
    2. Pull out the SIM CARD and Memory Card
    3. Switch on The Nokia N97 without SIM AND MEMORY CARD
    4. Then do the Factory Settings by going to phone menu options because by this time WSOD will be over.
    5. Then Insert the SIM and restart it.
    6. Again Switch Off the same and insert Memory Card.
    7. Switch on again and restore settings as backedup whether in your PC or memory card to get last settings.

what do you think about home screen...  i try gdesk and another apps. its so bad...
Message Edited by cexen on 28-Oct-2009 08:18 PM

Have you tried device without memory card in place? Pain as it may be backing up essential data, you may have to consider a "hard reset" to exclude any possible software corruption or possbly re-install current version of firmware.

  • Problem with home screen shortcuts

this has ocurred several times. I am in the messaging application, click to update mailbox and while it is trying to update the email application crashes and closes completely. I am returned to the home screen but now the shortcut I had for my email account inbox is gone, replaced by a shortcut to the music store. I had to manually fix this several times but then I discovered that just leaving it after a while the correct icon would reappear.

The advice above may well be correct (depending on the phone you are using which you didn't mention  )However if you follow it, I would advise backing up Contacts, Calendar and Notes ONLY, as if you backup your settings and restore them it could re-install the problem ! Also somewhat easier to dial *#7370# followed by 12345, but the choice is yours and it will take a while to set up your phone again (assuming you have an S60v5 phone, 5800, N97, X6 etc)
    Good Luck

  • N97 White Screen .. Phone wont boot at all ... Stu...

    Hello all,
So I have finally stumbled upon the White Screen of Death ... Really sad that it happened but I still have hope that it may work. THe phone does not boot up and its stuck on the Nokia logo
    [Long read]
It happened one before a day and I managed to find a helpful topic
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=141381
It had everything regarding reset codes and whatnot, but the really helpful message was from grschinon .. ( he seems to know what hes doing ) .. for he shared an amazing technique of holding the green and red buttons while booting up the phone, and it worked !!
But yesterday, it happened again  .. The screen wont light up and the keylock was stuck, so I just removed the battery ... I turned it on while assuming that the red/green button technique will work, but it didnt
I tried it over and over again ( been trying for half a day actually ) .. but with no avail, it didnt work ..
I tried connecting it through usb, with the wall charger, different combinations of buttons ... meh none worked
Its really annoying that half of my friends keep saying, THIS is why you get a blackberry .. and similar stuff .. My previous phones are all Nokia and this is just a huge dissapointment .. the N95 is 500000 times better than the N97 in stability and etc ... I was anxiously waiting for v2.0  ... now my n97 is dead
     [/Long read]
I understand that there is a solution that will FORMAT the whole phone, but I dont want that, there are lots of pictures on my internal memorycard (32gb one) and 30+ applications (if not more) .. I seriously dont want to lose all of those ..
So do you know any other way that I can fix the problem ?? Is there a soft reset combination that i can use rather than the hard reset one??
Please advise, your comments are really appreciated,
    Kind Regards,
    Z

These are the solutions that i've colected over the internet:
    I hope it help's you!
N97 White Screen .. Phone wont boot at all ... Stuck at Nokia logo
They instructed me to turn on the phone pressing the green, red and camera button at the same time as I pressed the power button.
It worked and the phone started.
I didn't need to format my phone.
Had the same problem with my White N97 (not that the colour probably makes a difference).
Was using the Facebook App on the main screen as a widget, tried to start it up by touching it - it seemed to not start even after waiting or trying multiple times.
So i thought to myself, "I'll just reboot my phone, that should fix it."
    BAD IDEA.
Got stuck on the White Screen with the Blue "NOKIA" on it, so i thought...i'll wait and see what happens.
    Nothing...for hours.
So i pulled the battery and put it back in again....powered on....same thing..."NOKIA"...and nothing else.
Repeated this about....10 times, getting more and more nervous that i had turned my $950AU phone that i had boasted to my friends that is better than their iphones....into a useless brick.
So, i turned to Google looking for answers...
Someone said they left the battery out of the phone until it went flat and had some success.
I found something about other users having a similar issue with other software  (Garmin GPS software), and also the "Mail for Exchange" application.
They mentioned something about the only way to get it working again was to hard reset the phone to stop the apps from going online...
I REALLY didnt want to do a hard reset, as i had a bunch of apps and data that i DID NOT want to lose or spend like 3-4hours re-installing.
SO...I got thinking...how can i stop my apps from trying to go online without a hard reset.
So this is what i tried - and it worked!
1- Power off phone (if power button responds)
    2- Pull out battery.
3- Remove memory card (if you have one)
    4- Remove SIM card.
5- To make sure phone has no residule power hold down power button without any of the above inserted.
6- Re-insert battery only (without SIM card or Memory Card)
7- Cross your fingers and toes. (optional...but if it helps what the hell.)
    8- Power on phone.
9- IF the phone prompts you to go online in any way Select NO. (or if it says do you want to activate Offline mode say YES)
10- Press Options key when you get to the home screen and select "Content to offline mode"
11-  Make sure "Offline" is displayed in top left corner near where the signal bar usually is. ( if it doesnt say "Offline" press the power button briefly, and select "Offline" (should be underneath the "Pager" profile)
12- Once you have made sure your phone and applications are in offline mode - Power off phone using Power button.
    13- Remove battery
14-  Again to make sure phone has no residule power hold down power button without any battery or cards inserted.
15- Re-Insert SIM card, Memory card and Battery.
    16- Power on Phone.
At this point the phone should start up as per normal, I knew it was working straight away for me because my SIM card prompted me for a pin number. (which happens normally for me when I turn on my phone)
After the phone is ready, i just put my phone back into online mode by selecting my "general" profile, and put my content back online.
Please note: This is what worked for me. Results and Mileage may vary.
It seems the issue is that the phone startup is being held up or stopped due to Programs or Applications tring to go online.
For me I suspect it could have been the Facebook App due to the problems i had before powering off my phone the first time.
I am going to put my Content to offline mode if I need to reboot my phone again, at least until nokia pull up their socks and release a fix for this.
Side note: my N97 is also running Version 11 Firmware. ( not that it may make a difference)
Good luck to all with same problem, hope this works for you too.
Had the same problem but I just removed the extra memorycard and formatted it on my computer before I put it back...
after a few days trying without micro sd inserted
the result is, n97 still stuck in white screen nokia logo
it happend always if i turn off my phone without sign off the facebook app widggetz..
here is how to crash your phone
put facebook widgetz on nokia standby screeen
and then put it online mode
    klik the facebook app
just do anything in your facebook for check it already connected
    klik end key
now turn off your phone without sign out the Facebook
    turn on again
and boom your phone will stuck on nokia white screen logo
and it will never boot forever..
sometime when you take off the batery and reinserted again it can boot normaly but the percentage is 20% only..
soo if your n97 can boot normaly after FB "accident" that mean you lucky and i sugest you unistall your FB ASAP before n97 stuck again on white screen nokia logo..
is anyone have problem like mee??
i like to hear another opinion...
i think nokia already knew this problem, that way when you check ovi and your phone set to nokia n97 the facebook app is missing...
    my firmware is v11 already

  • 5800 XM: Problem with Home Screen

    Hi People,
This is the problem I have and any assistance will be greatly appreciated.
Well, the problem is on the home screen (desktop) of my phone none of the icons are working. When I select the "Shortcuts Bar" as the homescreen theme, the phone does not display any of the shortcuts on the home screen. When I touch the locations where the shortcuts would be (on the homescreen) I can see the hit area getting highlighted, but nothing happens (also none of the shortcut icons are shown either).
Further, the "phonebook" and the "dialler" icons at the botton of the screen don't work either, when I "touch" them (atleast the two icons can be seen here, but nothing happens), plus pressing the "green" hardkey does not bring up the dialler screen as well.
I tried everything I could think of, such as stripping out all themes and even tried a facotry reset, but none of these did any good.
Everything else works fine on the phone (including the contacts bar on the home screen) and the phone has 40+ mb free (C drive). So, I'm pretty much clueless as to what might be wrong here.
Greatly appreciate anyone's help on this.
    Thanks,
    Gehan

the last option might be a way to go since you can't even acess dialer. it is not recommended for all things but in those cases it might wrok for you also read carefully
With all these operations I recommend you TAKE OUT MEMORY CARD and DO A BACK UP OF YOUR STUFF!!!
NOTE: In front of the hash key ( #) there is also a STAR key that people often miss and state that the code does not work.
1.. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data) Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345.
2.*#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
    3. hard reset - hold the following buttons * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, /GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button.
