N97 Internet Shortcut problem

I just updated to the latest firmware update using NSU (11.0.021), now that it has been rolled out on 3 network (UK) and have one slight problem with my Internet shortcut on the top shortcut bar on the home screen.
The icon has changed from the usual large globe, to a small white page with WWW running up vertically and a small globe next to it. When selecting the internet shortcut I am taken straight to a web page, as opposed to opening my bookmarks menu.
I have changed the setting to open straight to the bookmarks menu and when going in through Menu > Web it opens to my bookmarks but to matter what I do, the Internet shortcut on my home screen always tries to take me directly to a website and bypasses my bookmarks menu (and it is either Planet 3 (network's homepage) or Google Mobile!) depending on whether I connect through the network or through Wifi. I have made sure the shortcut is directed to Applications > Internet and not a bookmark.
Also, when changing themes to one with a different icon set, the Internet shortcut icon stays like this and no longer changes to the icon which came packaged with the theme for internet.
Anyone have any ideas on what happened or has had this problem following the firmware update? I just want my large globe icon pack on my home screen (it is still the large globe in the Menu) and want it to take me to my bookmarks menu NOT a website!

Hi there
I had the same problem when i upgraded mine and found it most annoying - however i did manage to fix it and its relatively simple. Hold down your finger on the widget and then select settings (assuming you have it on the 4 icon favourite shortcut widget if that makes sense) - click on the shortcut you want to change (i think it will say internet but can't remember) basically change that shortcut to the application thats called 'web' thats it - The icon will change to the globe again and it will then go to your default homepage.

Internet Shortcuts saved on Desktop open new instance of Firefox 3.6 using clean profile--how can I make it open all shortcuts using current profile?

I rely heavily on Firefox's profiling ability to assist me in my web design projects. Lately, using Firefox 3.6, I have run into some problems with how it opens Internet Shortcuts that are saved locally (i.e.- shortcuts that reside on my Desktop). When I double-click on one of these shortcuts, a new instance of Firefox 3.6 is loaded with the saved website from the shortcut, but it's also initialized a fresh profile (i.e.- my bookmarks are gone, no add-ons, etc.--it's as if it uses some sort of "hidden" clean slate to load the shortcuts).
Is there any way to force Firefox to load all shortcuts into whatever profile I'm currently using at that given moment? I think the reason this has happened to begin with is because of the fact that I did some stuff to Internet Explorer awhile back that caused some problems with the Internet Shortcut associations and it all led to this eventuality.
I'm running Windows XP Pro and have the following profiles with my Firefox versions:

When I go into the "Folder Options / File Types" and double-click on "Internet Shortcut", I have the following within the "Advanced" settings (for the "open" action):

"Use DDE" is checked...
"DDE Message" is blank...
"Application" is "shdocvw"...
"DDE Application Not Running" is blank...
"Topic" is "System"
Again, I think the root problem here is to do with the profiles and how they're handled when being opened with Firefox but I can't discern how to apply a fix with all this as I've obviously goobered this up a bit. I would really appreciate some professional knowledge on this and would prefer to avoid any reinstalls of anything if possible.

To save your sanity with this issue, my advice is to find a method other than desktop shortcuts to open those URL's.
1. Desktop shortcuts are going to open the Default Browser.
a. With multiple versions of Firefox installed that would be the last version that was installed when you have Firefox set as the Default Browser in Windows..
b. The Default Browser is going to use the Profile that shows a Default=1 in the profiles.ini file.
c. The Default Browser with the Default Profile isn't going to open if you have any other versions of Firefox already running, and the -no-remote command line parameter doesn't work in this situation.
2. The use of multiple Profiles and multiple versions isn't officially supported by Mozilla, and all the Bug reports that I have ever read about Requests for Enhancement have been WONTFIX'd by the developers. Basically we have to work with the limitations in Firefox and maybe improvise work arounds by ourselves. I've even seen a few threats about removing Profiles altogether in RFE Bug reports about Profiles.
I have had so many problems over the years with this Default Browser / Default Profile thing over the years that personally I find it easier to just set Opera as the Default Browser in Windows rather than have a Profile get b0rked because some other program I am using decides it wants to open the Default Browser unexpectedly. I don't use Opera for much, but it is a lot better than IE for purposes of being the Default Browser, considering the quirks I have seen with Firefox and multiple Profiles.
I have written a number of postings over at the MozillaZine Builds forum over the years about installing multiple versions of Firefox and using multiple Profiles. There's a lot of tips and comments provided by other multiple Profile users in one of those threads. Why don't you read those threads and see if it gives you some ideas or solutions I haven't thought of.

N97 Wi-Fi Problems

I have just received my N97, and was wondering if anybody would kindly help with the following problem:
My N97 connects, no problem, to my home network, using wi-fi, however, if i attempt to open, any of the pre-installed apps ( i-player, Facebook etc) the N97 automatically attempts to connect via gprs.
I cannot find any settings, that allow me to change the app settings.

Under Connectivity you will find a folder named "Destinations" where you will be able to setup multiple access points under one connections point. i.e mine defaults to a Connection point named "Internet" where I have 3 access points
WLAN
Orange Internet
Orange Java
I have prioritized em in that order so when my WLAN is out of range the phone should automatically search for the next priority access point in this case Orange Internet and if that ain't available then it should search for and connect to Orange Java.
After you set this up make make it your default access point for your browser and every other app that allows you to define an access point.
Hope this helps I'd advise you to download the User guide and read the whole "Connectivity" Chapter to fully understand this.

Forms Browser window and Internet shortcuts

Hi,
We are in the process of migrating our Forms 4.5 app to 9i, and have hit a problem with Internet shortcuts, in that the shortcut grabs the first available browser window.
Separately I had added some Javascript that warns the user of an attempt to navigate away from the page, because the seemingly unused browser window is of course vital, however the Internet shortcut is now useless.
We could, as a precaution against Internet shortcuts, open an extra browser window before our Forms browser, but I don't believe that 3 windows for every forms application is the right approach (gross understatement!).
Can anyone offer any alternatives?

If you are using IE 5.5 or higher as the browser you might consider hta technology (microsoft specific, I peronally would avoid it...). Look at subject HTA Applications on the microsoft site. HTA stands for HTML Application. It is HTML that runs outside the browser's security domain as client software.
We have implemented this method for a customer who insisted on having the Webforms applications being started exactly the same way as was the case with c/s, i.e. from windows menu shortcuts.
A beter way I think, is to offer a home page with links to the Forms Applications.

A possible solution for "foreight language keyboard shortcut" problem...

Everyone know the problem of losy keyboard layout when Final Cut is used with foreight language keyboard. We loose the COMMAND-Q shorcut.
As PieroF suggested in many posts in final cut express forum, there is a workaround:

+a. the problem exists also with the Italian keyboard (in addition to other languages, as pointed by other posters)+
+b. the workaround I described in my previous answer works fine :+
+- close FCE (if open)+

+- drag your own language (Italian in my case) again on top of English (at the end the window will show the same original settings, but something happened in the heart of Leopard...)+
+- close System Preferences+
+- open FCE: now all shortcuts work as expected, and are correctly listed with their corresponding menu commands+
+It's a workaround, it's not convenient (I'd better have this bug fixed), but apparently you have to apply it only once for each system startup.+

As stated by Piero, you have to follow this procedure after each computer startup.
I found a way to restore the COMMAND-Q shortcut with the keyboard and mouse system pref panel.
Simply add Final Cut application and add a +custom shotcut+. Be careful to type exactly the "Quit Final Cut Express" menu.
This solution allows to restart the computer.
It's work with Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro under Leopard 10.5.4.

I like your suggestion because the keyboard shortcuts defined in the system preferences do not require redefinition at each startup. So in theory we could define all missing/wrong shortcuts this way, and not only the cmd-Q as you suggested. Boring, but we could do it once for all.
The only problem is that I don't know how to define shortcuts for submenus, for example "Render Selection/Both": it seems system preferences allows only to define shortcuts for the menu ("Render Selection" - in this case absolutely useless) but not for the submenu.
Do you know a way ? (I looked in the help, which didn't... help).

My setup is:
Cable Modem -> Mac Mini --> PC Laptop
... with the connection between the mac mini and the PC laptop being the built-in mac mini airport using internet sharing.
Hi, I've been trying to set up Airport internet sharing with the mini, to no avail. It works off & on, but invariably the internet connections drop after about 10 minutes. The only way to get it started again, is to go into internet sharing, turn off internet sharing, then turn it on again. It will work for another 10 minutes or so (slow) after gong back to the PC laptop and reconnecting, then it chokes again.
I've tried the connection both with & without WEP, same behavior. I read somewhere that OS X only plays well with using Channel 1, so I tried that. No luck. Tried with and without Interference Robustness, no luck.
Tried with WEP on and using 40 bit hex keys using a "$" prepend in the mac as suggested on this web page:

Same behavior, works for 10 minutes, then it chokes again.
Tried with & without the firewall.
Yes, personal web sharing is on.
The PC laptop works fine with any number of other wireless routers out & about town, at my girlfriend's house, so forth.
Any chance I have a bum mac mini wireless card or antennae or something? The reception strength on the PC laptop is good.
Just don't know what to make of it. So stupid, it seems like something pretty basic that ought to work.
Yeah yeah tell me to get a wireless router, but I'm not going to do that, that's one major reason I bought the mini in the first place and it would be nice if it worked as advertised.
Any other suggestions?

this is me again. A week ago or so, I noticed there was an automatic update to the wireless on the mac mini.
Since then the performance is much improved. My PC laptop connection to the mac mini no longer drops spontaneously.

Yes, on occasion, when I leave and then come back to use the wireless, the laptop will not reconnect after multiple attempts; I have to turn of internet sharing and flick it back on again, but then it works all evening fore hours and hours straight with no problems.

I have a BTHub4 - My iMac, iPhone, and children's iPads all connect to the internet no problem. I cannot get my 2 MacBook Pros or my partners MacBook Air to connect. Have tried diagnostics - says to change DNS but it is correct.

This is extraordinary. I have moved the router and also tried resetting it to its factory strings. We have had this router for over a year and all our devices have always worked. Now all four laptops will not connect to the internet. Only one oMac and our phones and iPad.
I have had far more devices running at once before but now all laptops are timing out on connection. Some say this iIP address is already being used but if I manually set to a slightly different IP address it does not help, noir if I manually set to the correct IP address. Why would all our laptops (four) suddenly be unable to connect?

Every email I'm receiving as of this morning is accompanied by an email from [email protected], entitled "Internet Mail - Problem during delivery processing"
Is this an issue on the Mac server side or a problem with my Mail app?

My Wife and I both have an Ipad and an iPhone, I use an iMac and my wife a MacBook Pro.
I have this problem with all my devices.
My wife has NOT got this problem.
We both use a [email protected] email acount.
Just compared the settings:
For "Incoming server" I have p03-imap.mail.me.com
My Wife has p02-imap.mail.me.com .... and has not got this problem.
I have setup a new rule for incoming mails (for the meantime):
move all incoming emails from [email protected] to trash and delete it.
Works fine for now,......until APPLE deals with the problem.

Shortcut problem

I am having a problem linking to an external .chm in my
software application help. I've read the posts about shortcut
problems and am trying to use Pete Lee's javascript. I saved this
javascript in a file names 'getChmDir.js' which I added to my
RoboHelp project and then added as a baggage file. I included the
following in the HEAD of my truecode:

What I'm trying to do is use an image with a hyperlink to a
specific file in an external .chm. My current hyperlink is:

Runtime Error has occurred. ...Error:Object expected.' 'is as

My thinking was that I need to supply the application,

know much about javascript, but I've been successful in applying
Pete's javascript for mynotes and Peter Grainge's javascript for
show all/hide all.

While there are problems with shortcut controls, opening an
external .chm should still work with a direct call <A HREF=
"MaestroFlowcharts.chm::\Task_Flow\cc_start_care.htm">. This
provided the external and calling .chm are in the same folder. I'm
also assuming you are calling from a .chm as opposed to calling a
.chm from WebHelp.

Omni 10 mostly internet connection problem, also difficulties responding generally

Dear all,
For two weeks now i am proud owner of an omni 10 tablet. However, i already encountered some problems like the loss of the audio System, which was luckily restored with the help of the hp support via telephone.
Unfortunately, my tablet is not properly connecting to the internet since yesterday. It also has problems opening PDF files with 'adobe read', deleting or newly creating appointments in the challenger app and foremost it sometimes does not open the settings section depite repeatedly tapping on its button..
Most important currently is the internet connection problem. Is connects but says at the same time that the connection is limited. Additionally, it does not offer any solutions to this. That happend with three differend routers so far..

Uninstalling Safari 4.0.4 breaks Internet Shortcuts, HTTP no longer handled

Installed Safari 4.0.4 on Windows 7 to see if my site was truly as compatible with Safari as it was with Chrome. After checking it out I uninstalled Safari and it deleted the protocol handlers for HTTP breaking Internet Shortcuts.
When I click on an Internet Shortcut now I get the error: "Unable to open this Internet Shortcut. The protocol "http" does not have a registered program". I have Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome 5(dev), and IE 8 installed, and Chrome is my default.
Tried re-installing Chrome and Firefox to see if it would repair the handlers Safari deleted, but with unchanged results. I'm hesitant to try reinstalling Safari for obvious reasons.
Has this happened to anyone else, and if so, how did you repair your HTTP protocol handlers?

It hasn't happened to me, but the following page gives a good account of how to go about changing a file assocition or protocol in Windows 7. (If it's like the equivalent control panel in Vista, the "Protocol" section is way down the bottom of the list that comes up.)

How to import internet shortcuts?

I am setting up a new laptop after a HDD crash. I have copied across my Data, from a back up Ext HD. I have my old IE "favourites", saved in folders as "internet shortcuts", on my new C drive.
Please, how do I get those favourites / bookmarks into FireFox?
I have read elsewhere that I have to import them first into IE, but the method described seems to only allow import of one file at a time. I have c 600 bookmarks.
I am using Win7 Home Premium and Firefox 10.0.01. I have IE9 on this computer.

If you have IE Favorites with a .url file extension then you need to copy those to the Favorites folder in your Windows user account to make IE see then and probably Firefox as well if you want to import IE favorites.
