N97 - Mail for Exchange self signed certificate

I would like to use my N97 for sychronizing my nokia with my office e-mails (MfE 2003). Sync keeps on failing. I assume that my n97 does not accept the self-signed certificate we are using (unlike the iPhone and any other HTC or Windows mobile based device). I tried to install the certificate on my nokia - however all versions offered for conversion by my internet explorer are not recognized as a certificate by the n97 (either unkown format or just displayed as text).
Can anyone help? (I am afraid I have to deal with our self-signed certificate - so there is no chance to approach the problem from that end)
Many thanks!

I am also having the exact same problem. My company uses Exchange Server 2003, but I cannot get the Nokia N97 to sync using Mail for Exchange. I too am guessing that it might be related to the fact that we are using a self signed certificate.
When the sync failed, I tried to browse to our web exchange access on the N97 web browser, but that wouldn't work either (I have successfully been able to do this on a Sony Ericsson C905 and a BlackBerry Pearl, but the Nokie N97 says it is unable to perform the operation).
Can anyone confirm if the issue is in fact the self signed certificate, or make any other suggestions? I do not want to push my company down the path of getting the certificate signed if it's not going to solve the problem.
Thanks!

• Mail for Exchange and SSL certificate

I have a little problem with Mail For Exchange and my Nokia N80. I have self-signed certificate for Exchange mailserver and when I am synchronizing e-mails I got always message: "The site has sent an untrusted certificate. Continue anyway ?". I underestand that my certificate isn't verified by any root authority, but if I have synchronization schedule set at 15 minutes it means I have to confirm this message four times when I am not with my mobile one hour. So question is:
Is possible to import self-signed SSL certificate into Nokia N80 and set it as trusted ? If yes, please describe me how, because I have tried import the certificate as CER (it was opened just as NOTE on Nokia), I tried to convert it via openssl to PEM (the file was not recognized) etc... Thanks for any help in advance.

Go to your outlook web access website and click on the lock and then view certificate. The details and then you can save it in DER format to your desktop.
Then go to this site:
http://www.redelijkheid.com/symcaimport/ and insert through the browse button and then copy the link to your phone.
Then you should be able to download it
You can also go to your IIS default site on the exchange server and directory security and export your certificate under edit certificate.
I have tried everything now. I can download my certificate and the valicert from GoDaddy, but the Nokia phone is still saying "do you trust this certificate" every time the phone syncs.
Our firm have taken the E-phones away now and went over to windows mobile and all of them worked within 10 minutes without any errors.
The funny thing is that when you try to call nokia, they wont help you with Mail for Exchange, and it is there program
I know my GoDaddy certificate works on windows mobile phones, so It must be something with Mail for Exchange.
Every guy I talked to about symbian phones have told me they always gives problems with SSL. I am a bit **bleep**, but can conclude that Nokia is for the private consumer.

• Step by Step Instructions for Installing Self Signed Certificate using Certificate Modification Tool

I am looking for some step by step instructions for installing the self signed certificate from my Microsoft SBS 2003 server on a Treo 755p and 750p. In particular I need some help with the form of the actual certificate and how to use the Certificate Modification tool.
Some questions I have are as follows:
1. When I install the certificate on a Windows Mobile device I used an exported version of the certificate. This export is done using the DER x.509 format. Is that the same form I’ll need for the Palm? Do I need some other form? Can/should I just use sbscert.cer file that is generated when SBS is configured?
2. Does the self signed cert need to be installed on the computer being used to update the Palm or do we just need to be able to access the appropriate .CER file?
3. There are three things included in the PalmCertificatesTool.zip file:
Trusted CAs (folder)
Cert2pdb.exe
PalmCertificates.exe
How do I use these tools?
4. It looks like the PalmCertificates.exe file opens an interface that will allow me to browse to the desired .CER file. Then I suppose I use the < Generate PDB > to create something that needs to then be uploaded to the Palm device? Not having any real experience with a Palm device how do I upload and install this file?
5. Once uploaded do I do something on the device to install it?
If there is some white paper that provides step by step instructions on doing this that would be great.
Thanks,
Walt Bell

Thanks for that.
I have one question after reading the article 43375:
The article has you "Turn of AutoSync" and then "Reset the device". It then indicates the device should be left idle.
The next step relates to running the PalmCertificates.exe, navigate to the certificate file and add it and then run the < Generate PDB > button. Should the device be connected to the computer during this process? If so, at what point after the reset do you connect it to the computer?
Thanks!

• Is the N97 Mail for Exchange or MfE 'provisionable...

Background info: I used to carry two phones, the N95 and the E51. Before MfE 2.0 came out, MfE was not installable on the N95 (or any N series phones). So I bought the E51 so that I can use MfE to have my corporate mail pushed to me. Today, I'm the proud owner of the N97, with MfE 2.9.176 installed. No more carrying 2 phones, and everything is synchronizing just fine.
Last week, my company announced a new policy regarding mobile devices. Soon, they will enforce new security policies as available in Exchange 2003 SP2. This really got me worried, because I spent quite a lot of money in investing in the N97!
We all know that Nokia states that only the E series devices fully support all security policies of Exchange servers. (Nokia calls this 'provisionable' versus 'non-provisionable' devices.) But here's the kicker. In the Mail for Exchange Guide for Administrators (http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guides/MfE_admin_guide_140709.pdf), in chapter 2, section 2, part 1 titled "Are your devices 'provisionable'?", it states the following:
Eseries devices are provisionable
Nseries devices previous to S60 3.0 Feature Pack 2 (FP2) are not provisionable
Nseries devices after S60 3.0 FP2 may be provisionable
Supported devices not designated Eseries or Nseries may or may not be provisionable.
Well, that is kind of some good news. But it left out key information regarding my N97, specifically S60 5.0. Does anyone know if the N97 can be categorized together with those Nseries devices "after 3.0 FP2"? Or can anyone identify specifically what security policies/features are provisionable in the N97 device? This is important because I need to make the case with the IT management to put me in the exception list, if at all possible. But I don't want to stir up anything until I know exactly what can or cannot be done with the N97. This will be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Not only is Nokia's myriad of different web sites each requiring its own login credentials, they also have a myriad of places to go get software. I have always thought that http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com will have all the latest enterprise software coming from Nokia, but no, that is not the case. It turns out that http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/mail-for-exchange is the place to get the latest version. Just select your device, and it'll give you the download link for the latest.
Just so you know, even http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com doesn't have N97 listed as a device yet.
I really hope Nokia takes this consistency issue seriously just like how they're working on the consolidation of logins...

• N97-Mail for Exchange - MfE - Windows Live Mail - ...

I would mostly appreciate if somebody could provide me some help and tips on the above mentionned subjects.
I've got a N97-1, I installed MfE and the latest update 3.00 (79) and installed all the upgrades from Nokia (on Nokia website)
I'm working with Windows Live Mail for my mails (with several mail adresses, but the one synchronized is the hotmail (.fr) one) as well on my computer (in case I upgraded too my version of WLM) and via internet.
I'm using my N97 for business purposes and really need to be able to work with mails, calendar and contacts
I'm facing the following problems :
- the synchronization of contacts failed (I tried at least 30 times, including by erasing all my contacts on the phone) ==> the first sync lasts a few minutes and randomly 3 to 5 contacts are synchronized on the phone and then stops and the following syncs failed with the message Error System, try later. The contacts created on the phone are properly duplicated in WLM, but the ones created in WLM are not synchronized and do not appera on the phone (I saw 2 or 3 questions on that subject but without any answers)
==> I removed the contacts from the sync but it was only to have the opportunity to get my mail, please let me know what I have to do to get my contacts on my phone
- as I know the tasks sync was not functionning (it is ok for me I can manage with memo events), I only requested calendar and e-mail sync but the synchronization is frequently (and apparently randomly?) failing with the message Error System, try later : it happens as well when I'm connected via my office internet provider as when I'm connected via EDGE or 3G+. The only solution to have the synchronization functionning is to make a "full resync" and in the worst cases (the "re sync" synchronizes but the following sync is again in error), I have to remove the battery of the phone.
==>since nothing informs of the error, I'm steadily checking the Mfe entries to be sure I received all my mails!!! quite time consuming!!!
==> of course the resync is a nightmare because I have to check all the appointments I created directly on the phone, write them on a paper, resync and then recreate the appointments directly in WLM
==> when I resync, only 1 sent message is placed in the Sent file (le most recent)
NOTA : I removed the option "email notification" to have my email sync functionning (no need for me of this option, it is only information)
==> please let me know what I have to do to have my sync working properly
Additional information concerning the Syncparameters (sorry the translation from french to english may be inappropriate...!!)

Back sync : all the entries
Initial sync : Suppress entries on phone

Address [email protected]
Pop up new message : no
Signature : no
Signature : nothing
Send the message : immediatly
Back sync : 1 week
Just another point : I checked the Mfe logs for error system messages : Exception during ping seems to be THE typical message
I went through various blogs and discussions (in France, UK, US,...), I checked all the available upgrades (and browse all the files describing the benefits of the releases) and installed everything. I tried many many things to have my sync working properly and my contacts sync on my phone : but really I cannot find solutions. HEEEELP !
Thanks in advance for your response

Thank you for yor very quick answer and your tips. Unfortunately it won't solve my problems :
- emoze is excellent but the free version is only used for push mail (not calendar and contacts)
- profimail by lonelycat as well (and is not free)
Thank you anyway

• N97 Mail for Exchange problem

So, after my previous MfE disaster (it deleted all the contacts from my Exchange server, subsequently I was unable to get into MfE settings to change anything) I decided to reset the phone and start from scratch. I reset it using the code *#7370# which I found on this forum. It seemd to work, the phone behaved exactly as it did from the box. I got it started and downloaded the Messaging app. At the end of this process it gave me an error message "installation failed" but immediately then went into mailbox setup, showed another "preparing for installation" message and then went through the steps for setup.
The problem is that when I get to selecting "Mail for Exchange" as the type of mail I want to set up I get a message that there are too many accounts of this type already on the device (obviously there are none) and won't proceed.
I have repeated the whole thing twice from hard-resetting the phone onwards, and still get the same problem. I have looked in the file manager for any thing which look like old config files but can find none.
Any suggestions?

Thanks jg72 - that's certainly interesting. It does kinda make sense with you saying that, to a degree - but still a little strange?! I've managed to fix it myself last night before I read your post (so I think?!) by simply downloading the MfE .sis for it at: http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com/mail_for_exchange_downloads.php
The N97 isn't listed, and N96 install as mentioned earlier in this post throw an error on my phone saying it's not compatible - so I downloaded the .sis for the Nokia 5800 (ExpressMusic) - since it's the only other phone I know with the S60 5th Edition OS on it. I seem to now get further, and am able to configure the settings for push email!!! It was the "Nokia Email" app (different to MfE) that was given issues, and my "Mail For Exchange" folder was empty? I don't know if this was right with my handset being brand new out-of-the-box, but after installing the MfE .sis - I can now configure the server settings.
Now I need to speak to my administrator about what the settings should be !!!
Good luck everyone else having issues - hope this all helps you!

• N97 Mail for exchange - System Error

Im setting up my profile on Mail for exchange, entered same deatails that is on my n96, I then
start to sync and it reads..,
Connecting...
Connected.
then a nice useful message that says system error.
Ive switched phone of, back on still the same issue
any ideas?

I have had this issue with my N95. The problem is the architecture of N series phones. My email works seemlessly on an E65, an E63 and other WinMo phones but not on N95 using MfE. This problem occurs usually when the exchange server tries to push security settings like automatic lock. Automatic Lock, is supported by both E and N series, however N series does not take the enforced security from the Exchange server which is what causes the problem. If you try some public exchange server viz. www.mail2web.com, it works fine with N series phones but not managed exchange like in large organizations.

• Firefox 3.6.3 does not bring up the "add exception" option for a self-signed certificate

Hello. The company website I use has moved to a new server. The new server required some changes apparently, and now I am receiving the message CompanyXYZ.net:987 uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is not trusted because it is self-signed. The certificate is only valid for Now, on 1 of my 3 computers, I received the I understand the risks, and an option to Add an Exception. However, on the other 2 computers, I simply receive the previously described popup window and no option to proceed. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you for your genius.

I already have the browser.uxl.error_pages.enabled setting set to true, but I still do not get the option to add an exception for an internal certificate. I'm trying to connect to the iLO port on an HP server. Thanks.

• Cookbook for creating Self Signed Certificates using certutil

Hi,
I am trying to create a self signed certifcate for internal use. Can anyone point to a step by step procedure? The few that I have found on the web don't seem to work.
Thanks

• Re: Mail for Exchange and SSL certificate

I think this is what you need to do
1. go to the page from where you have to install certificate
2.You will see lock symbol at the right hand side of the page, click on it and save it on your desktop PC by going to details page
3. Open Nokia PC Suite --> FileManager and trasnfer the certificate from your PC to FileManager
4. Click on the certificate inside FileManager and install it, while installing allow it to choose its place automatically
Then try synchronising your mail, you ill receive it for the first time when you connect then it wont ask you for that again till you connect next time.
Hope this helps

Here's how I got my Nokia to accept the certificate as trusted. It may not work for everybody but it worked for me and after the past week of messing about I am truly grateful for that...
Basically, I uninstalled then reinstalled Certificate Services through add/remove programs. I then followed the advice on this site (below), but only as far as requesting a cert through IIS Manager.
http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/SSL_Enabling_OWA_2003.html
I followed the advice until this section (mainly because it wouldn't allow me to request a cert through IE on the server...)..
"Getting the Pending Request accepted by our Certificate Authority"
I then opened "certification authority" on the server (through administrative tools) and right clicked the cert authority which will have the same name as the cert you had just requested and selected properties. In my case, something like mail.mydomain.co.uk...
Under the General Tab I highlighted "certificate#0" in the CA Certificates box and clicked "view certificates".
This opens the cert and I then clicked the "details" tab and saved the cert to a location using the "copy to file" button.
Using the wizard I selected the first option "DER encoded binary x509(.cer) gave it a friendly name, saved it somewhere handy and closed the wizard.
I then copied the file onto a pc with the Nokia PC Suite installed and copied it to the documents folder (although any one will do). I guess you could bluetooth or email the cert as well..
I then browsed to it on the phone, clicked on it and it let me save it automatically into the certs folder. I restarted the phone, checked SSL was on and bingo the certificate was trusted and remains working today... You might have to delete an existing cert if you already have one installed as it won't let you overwrite it..
As I say, I can't say this will work for anybody else as I have probably fiddled around with the server so much it has gone west in some respects, but it works for me and that'll do for now...

• Self Signed Certificate for Exchange 2013

What's the draw back for using self sign certificate in production enviroment

Hi,
Based on my research, here are the disadvantages of self-signed certificate:
1. The certificates aren’t trusted by other applications/operating systems. This may lead to authentications errors etc.
Note: To overcome this limitation, some IT staff add the self-signed certificates to the Trusted Roots Certificate Authorities. However, using this workaround may to additional time that needed for management and troubleshooting.
2. Self-signed certificates life time is usually 1 years. Before the year is ended, the certificate may need to renew/replace.
3. Self-signed certificates may use low hash and cipher technologies. Due this, the security level that implemented by self-signed certificates may not satisfy the current Security Policy etc. .
4. No support for advanced PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) functions (e.g. Online checking of the revocation list etc.).
5. Most of the advanced feathers of the server side applications required to impended a PKI (Public Key Infrastructure). By this, self-signed certificates advantages cant be used.
For more information, you can refer to the following article:
http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/yuval14/2011/09/23/the-advantages-and-disadvantages-of-using-self-signed-certificates/

• How do we create self-signed certificate using java packages

Hi All,
I require some information on creating self-signed certificate using java packages.
The java.security.cert.* package allows you to read Certificates from an existing store or a file etc. but there is no way to generate one afresh. See CertificateFactory and Certificate classes. Even after loading a certificate you cannot regenerate some of its fields to embed the new public key – and hence regenerate the fingerprints etc. – and mention a new DN. Essentially, I see no way from java to self-sign a certificate that embeds a public key that I have already generated.
I want to do the equivalent of ‘keytool –selfcert’ from java code. Please note that I am not trying to do this by using the keytool command line option – it is always a bad choice to execute external process from the java code – but if no other ways are found then I have to fall back on it.
Regards,
Chandra

I require some information on creating self-signed certificate using java packages. Its not possible because JCE/JCA doesn't have implementation of X509Certificate. For that you have to use any other JCE Provider e.g. BouncyCastle, IAIK, Assembla and etc.
I'm giving you sample code for producing self-signed certificate using IAIK JCE. Note that IAIK JCE is not free. But you can use BouncyCastle its open source and free.

• Cannot accept self-signed certificate on some machines

I'm trying to connect to a certain server that uses a self-signed certificate - the admin thinks that's safer than accepting thousands of unknown intermediate CAs, and he has a point; witness the Certificate Patrol add-on.
When I try from some client machines with various OS, FireFox versions etc., it works. I can accept the certificate permanently.
But on at least 3 machines, I get an error message "unable to obtain identification status for the given site", and I cannot confirm an exception and get to the site at all.
2 of those machines have FF 10.0.4. But on another machine with FF 10.0.4, there is no problem.
On machines where I can store an exception, when I look in the certificate manager, the certificate is marked "(not stored)", and I cannot view it. What does that mean ? A few other certs in the server store are also marked not stored, while most have a certificate name and are viewable, along with one marked "no nickname".

The issue seems to revolve around a cached HTTPS redirect when the server certificate has changed. I have filed https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=767611
The "not stored" issue I realize is due to a permanent excep[tion for a self-signed certificate being stored as a certificate authority, with a placeholder in the servers tab

• Help w/ self-signed certificate in SunOne 5.2 P4

I'm running SunOne 5.2 P4 and I'm very new to the whole SSL thing and want to enable SSL in SunOne for some testing.
However, all attempts at generating and importing a certificate of varying lengths (512, 1024, 2048, 4096 bits) results in the following error in the Certificate Install Wizard of the Console:
"Either this certificate is for another server, or this certificate was not requested using this server."
Could someone point me to some instructions or walk me through the steps for generating self-signed certificates so they will import correctly? All the instructions I have seen so far say to send the "Certificate Request" to a CA for signing. I don't want to do that. I just need it for testing and would like to know how to do it locally. I assume this means self-signing it.
Thanks!!

It's not necessarily the server-certificate itself that is self-signed. My guess is that the CA that signed this certificate uses a self-signed certificate for itself.
Your certificate chain might look like this:
Your certificate <<signed by>> Your CA <<signed by>> Your CA
Your CA isn't a trusted issuer by default, therefore you need to import the CA's certificate into the truststore.

• Mail App Not Working with Self-Signed Certificates

First and foremost, I apologise for starting another thread that is 90% similar to others but I wanted to avoid falling into an existing context. Like may others, I am having issues with the Mail App in Mavericks but I have an email account other than G-Mail.
That being said, here is the issue I am having. Until recently I never had an issue sending and receiving email from various accounted. My Internet provider, an Exchange account, even a G-Mail account.
Yesterday, my Web hosting provider issued a new (self-signed) certificate as the old one had expired (which was also a self-signed certificate). While I am able to still receive messages, I am no longer able to send any.
I have tried numberous possible solutions to no avail. I have removed and readded my email account, I have refreshed my SMTP settings, I have removed all semblence of the account from my Key Chain, added the Certificate manually with full trust, and I have even flushed the caches from my ~/Library/ folder. The last one perked up the Mail App but did not restore my ability to send messages from my Web provider's SMTP server.
I suspect this is a bug in the Mail App but I'm hoping I can find a few last solutions before I file a bug report.
In the meantime, I am using another outgoing server from my Internet provider. It will do but for consistency I'd much rather use the outgoing server that came with the email account in question.
I am all but convinced it is the Mail App as Thunderbird is able to use the SMTP server just fine and I am still able to send messages using the exact same settings on my iPhone and iPad.
In case it helps, I am using a Early 2011 MacBook Pro with the latest Mavericks update (which ironically was meant to solve some issues other users had with the Mail App).
On a related note, I wish I had stayed on Snow Leopard. I did not have a single issue with that OS. Now I feel like I am working on Windows Vista again and I am waiting for the Apple version of Windows 7 to set things right.

I am using an iPhone 6 plus on iOS 8.1 and suddenly my Yahoo email account will not populate to my Mail app. I have deleted and re-added the account and also re-booted the phone with no luck. I get the spinning wheel up by my Wi-Fi signal that suggests it's attempting to do something, but the bottom of the Inbox only says "Updated Yesterday." Has anyone else experienced this or can someone, especially an Apple employee, tell me how to fix this?
There is no Apple in this user to user technical forum, if you want an Apple employee you would need to take your phone to the Apple store.
What happens when you switch to using cellular data? Does your email update?
FYI - Yahoo email account is notoriously bad, you can try their app.
