N97 - Maps?

I've had my N97 since June. The Maps app is kind of cool, I use it a bit. I activated a license for the Drive Europe maps or something which has now expired, and when clicking on it to reactivate the license it wants £5.96 or something a month. Well I don't actually want to pay anything to use the maps, they're not that great - I have Sat Nav in the car anyway.
But I'm confused now. Do I actually need to pay to use the maps app then or what? I have downloaded the full European maps (1.9GB from the Map Loader desktop app in PC Suite mode), and the maps are on my phone, and I appear to be able to use them. What's the fee for? What do I get for free? It's all a bit confusing to be honest.
Any ideas? Ta!

correct maps are free to use it is the voice nav and turn by turn that you actually pay for in nokia maps. as long as you don't need those services you can keep on using maps and keep updating maps via nokia map updater/uploader and you will be fine.

  • N97 - Maps/Navigation Question (probably a rather ...

I have managed to update my actual maps. So that's good. My compass seems to work, so that is also good.
Before the Maps update I managed to save my home address and set it as a Favourite. Since the update of Maps (the app) and the actual maps themselves, I can't seem to save another Favourite location – such as my work address.
So, this may be a very dumb question, but I'm allowed a few surely? LOL Phones I'm OK with, computers are my livelihood – but GPS is a whole new confusing world to me. OK – I get the basic concept – my device communicates with a silver dish in the sky and decides where I am, I tell it where I want to go, it determines where that is and charts a route for me and guides me on my way (I hope – if the Telstra ad on TV here is any indication, that could be problematic).
How do I save a darn new address and make it a Favourite – I can't even save an address now, yet clearly I did before, because my home address is still there.
Also, I gather I have to subscribe to this thing if I actually want driving instructions etc. For $79.99 a year, it seems rather expensive – what am I actually getting for that $79 when the use of the satellite seems to be charged on my phone bill.
    I'm so confused.
Can someone please give me a kindergarten intro to GPS/Maps/what am I paying for/anything else I need to know?  How to save an address would be a good start!  Or is the answer to that, that my trial period has run out?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Dear Advanced Sage.
There are 4 components to a "SatNav" system.
1 - A GPS device, which triangulates your position using satellites in space. The same principle that land surveyors use to locate a point by measuring its distance from (at least) 2 other points.Your location is identified as a pair of co-ordinates on the world mapping convention system, latitude and longitude.
    2 - A digitised map (or twelve).
3 - Some software which  locates the identified co-ordinates on the digitised map, and the co-ordinates of any other "known"location. The map includes data about the various roads between the 2 identified locations, and determines the permutations of ways to get from A to B. According to your chosen priorities (faster route, shorter route, no toll roads, no ferries, etc) the software will inform you of the "best" route. It will normally do this by showing you this route, possibly step by step, on the screen of your SatNav.
The cost of these 3 elements  is paid for (once and for all) in the purchase of the phone.
To make the work of the number 1 component easier, that is, the task of the GPS to locate you in the first place, the GPS designers came up with AGPS - "Assisted" GPS. The assistance comes from the phones natural ability know where it is to a crude, but useful, extent by knowing the location of its "cell". This knowledge helps the GPS to calculate its position more quickly, by narrowing down its area of search. For the GPS to acquire this information, it needs to use the phones data connection to send and receive a small chunk of data about the cell, which gives the initial rough position to the GPS.
If you select this AGPS option in your "Positioning" settings, you have to pay for the data connection, or it will come from your data allowance. It's not a lot, and speeds up the operation of the GPS, but it's not necessary for the operation of the GPS.
4 - If, in addition to the visual directions from A to B, as shown on your screen, you want the SatNav to give you directions as you travel, this is known as "Navigation". It's like having a Navigator (as in rallying) sitting in the passenger seat, giving you directions as you go.
Nokia charge a license fee for this "Navigation". From what I've seen recently, the current licenses on offer cover periods up to 1 year. I bought my Navigation license for my old N95, and I was then able to buy a 3 year license, which worked out cheaper per year. I've now tranferred my license from my old N95 to my new N97.
Actually, I didn't have to do anything to "transfer" the license. You can set the license, on the Nokia server, to be linked to either your sim card, or your phone. If you link it to your phone, it will work with any sim card in the phone. If you link it to the sim card, your license will work. no matter what (nokia SatNav) phone you put your sim card in.
    That's about it really.
To sum up, the GPS, software, and maps are all included in the price of the phone, including the software and maps updates. If you choose AGPS you will have to pay for the small data charges from your data allowance. (There's no point in buying this phone without an "unlimited" data allowance - personal opinion). For "Navigation", turn-by-turn direction, you will have to pay for a license.
For what it's worth. I still have my old N95. I felt sorry for it, it's still a great phone, because it was left with no "Navigation" license, although I still had a perfectly working GPS. So I treated it to a copy of Garmin Mobile XT software. This installed perfectly on the N95, and, unlike the Nokia "Navigation" license, you only pay once. There's no term license. Once you've bought it, it's yours. It cost £50 GBP, and is accurate and easier to use than Nokia Maps. It wouldn't work on my N97, though, so I guess it is only for Symbian 3 devices, not Symbian 5. I bought a cheap "Pay and Go" sim card, to enable the Garmin software to use AGPS. The first time I used it thoug, it worked perfectly, and was quick to find my location, even without the AGPS assistance. A lovely bit of software.
    Phew ...

  • N97 + Maps 3.01 no gps signal and crash

On maps 2.0, N97 works perfectly.
Then I upgraded to Maps 3.0, GPS gets cutting off, so navigation is not useable, and cant get GPS fix/ signal easy. Even in open areas, need wait for 15 minutes and need to move the **bleep** n97 around to have some GPS signal.
Then yesterday i upgraded to Maps 3.01, No GPS signal at all! And when I press Options > Tools > Settings > Navigation maps crashed and goes back to standby screen.
Well, with all the bugs accumulating of the N97, we can burn this piece of **bleep**.

  • N97 Maps Download via Phone

    Hi,
I recently purchased an N97 and wish to download maps via the phone/wifi.  I do not have a computer for which I am an administrator so I can not use Ovi/Nokia Maps on any PC.  I can use a wifi connection to download.
The Ovi website boasts how you can save downloads by installing Nokia Maps but I can't find out how to download them via the phone.  I read something about them downloading automatically when you are in a location but then you'd be on roaming and incurring £££££s.
Does anybody know how to download Maps via the N97?
    Daniel

Futher to phonehacker's comment - what you cannot do that Map Loader allows is to download entire regions over the air - you will only download that area that is in displayed on the screen.
So what you would need to do is to scroll around the area that you wish to download with your Wlan connected to allow the data to download. then move on to the next.
    Cheers
    Chris

  • N97 map problem

Hi, my n97 ovi map and google map having problem, when i try to use ovi map or google map then always appears on the screen " Licence to connect expired". i have deleted the map download again but still it does not work.

Also, what version of maps do you have ? 3.04 is available that gives wifi location as well as network and GPS . You could also install Google maps , and see how accurately it positions you as that also uses GPS. Finally, how long are you giving the GPS to locate your position , as an initial GPS lock can take several minutes (which is why all the other methods are available !
    Good Luck

  • N97 map 3.1 updatedAve

I UPDATED MAPS TO 3.1 THEN USED IT A FEW TIMES. I AM GOING TO FRANCE IN A FEW WEEKS SO USED MAP LOADER TO PUT FRANCE ON BUT AFTER THAT IT ASKED ME TO UPDATED AGAIN + C: DRIVE UPDATE. AFTER THE UPDATE YOU HAVE TO RELOAD YOUR MAPS SO THE PROBLEM STARTS ALL OVER AGAIN!                   P.S. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS USING MY N97 AND SOME TIME IT WILL ONLY TYPE IN CAPS IN SOME TEXT BOXS

I have a similar problem now. I do not get to install the update, and then I am not able to download the maps.
Seems I have to update the application on the phone (3.0) before I can get the PC app to work, but the phone app is asking for more memory (which there is plenty of).
Anyone who can assist me in this?

  • N97 - Maps 3.04 - difficult to create a multi-poin...

On the face of it, the fact that Maps 3.04 can allow a multi-point, ordered route to be created is a good thing. However, I find building such routes to be difficult, particularly where they involve a mix of places stored as Favourites and places from the map.
If I start from Favourites and add a point from there, then try to add one from a search, what happens is not a "free" search but a "nearest per category" list - not always any good for what I actually want.
I can sometimes add point from a search or the map first, but I am not finding the interface particularly intuitive.
Can anyone advise me how I might form routes of this type more easily?

    Exactly, is very bad.
Imagine that you have save your a favourite route and then you want to modify it using only your phone, for exemple adding a new point.
Then when you select the add anew point it doesn gives you the possiblity of adding a point from the map wich is really bad. Instead , it offers you
the category list that pmrtvcom mentioned aboved. Really annoying.

  • Nokia n97 maps wifi?

    hi,
i need help configuring the phone to connect via WIFI for maps, and not use the AT&T network. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Hi s60mjk23
Bear in mind that there are two processes at work, firstly the Assisted GPS feature accessed through "Positioning" only requiring very small amounts of data for a positional fix and secondly within Nokia Maps application where "Go-online at start up" may be "Yes, No or Always ask"

  • Nokia Maps (Navteq) from N96 to N97

    Hi,
Is it possible to move Nokia Maps (Navteq) from N96 to N97 and how?

Map Loader tells me I'm using
    Map Loader 3.0.28.0
    Nokia N97 (Map version 0.1.22.103)
And the phone tells me I'm using
    Maps 3.03(54) (from Betalabs).
There is no Services tab any more, and the Map Loader Help only tells me I can download Maps and Voices. The Help doesn't mention Services.
I got my 3 year Western Europe licence about 18 months ago, for my N95. As soon as I plugged my old sim into the N97, and ran Maps (2.0 at the time) it went off to the internet and "verified" the licence info.
At that time the Map Loader app had a brown interface, and didn't change for a long time. The Services tab gave a priced list of all the extras, and you could buy them through the app. It also explained that you had the choice of whether to link your license to the sim or the phone. I remember thinking it through at the time, and deciding to link it to the sim, because I still have my N95, and sometimes switch the sim into that phone. Since Ovi has taken over the app, all that choice and explanation has gone (at least for me).
Maybe I'm not seeing the Services tab because I'm using the Betalabs version  3.03(54)?
    Edit:-
By the way, I used to get the Services tab when I linked to my N95 running Maps 2.0, but I don't remember the version of Map Loader I used at the time.

  • Upgrade Nokia Maps with Linux

I don't use Windows. Is it possible to install latest version of Nokia Maps 3.0 on my 6210 Navigator with Linux? I mean where can I download sis file? Then I can transfer it on phone via USB or BT and install.
May be I have to buy Windows to upgrade phone software?

    Hi,
The Nokia Maps Updater is currently only compatible with Windows Operating System (XP and Vista). This would be the main method of updating to Maps 3.01.
On some devices (e.g.N97) Maps updates are available via the Software Update application in the Device Menu. It might be worth checking if you have this available. (note that this requires donwloading data over the air, and so to avoid costs it is recommended to connect via WLAN)
The .sis file is not available as a seperate download for Maps 3.01
An alternative is to download the Beta version of Maps 3.03, however please note that Nokia Care line cannot offer support for beta products. If you are interested please check out http://betalabs.nokia.com/ovi-maps
    Kind Regards

  • N97:Ovi Maps crashes after a few seconds

On N97 I had Ovi maps working like a breeze for some weeks now. All of a sudden I see this behaviour. Open Ovi Maps, see the main page, click on My Location the map appears a message about connecting might cost you something and the Ovi Maps disappears.
What should I do the get Ovi Maps working againg. Oh, btw Internet works just fine.

The original maps app that came with the phone will always be there (like music player or photo viewer or web browser) Maps 3.04 works fine on my N97. Best way to install is to remove (as you said you did) all Nokia/Ovi maps from Installed Applications, then download Ovi Maps 3.04 Beta from Nokia Beta Labs. Then use Nokia Maps Loader on PC to first remove old maps, followed by downloading and installing the map data for your region onto the phone (the stuff the Maps app uses to find where you are and to navigate) to avoid having to download 'on the fly', this speeds everything up and avoids data usage. Maps should then work fine ! Well it works for me !!

  • N97 Nokia Map

    Hi guys,
Anyone know the application name list in the Installed Application:
(Setting --> Application MGR --> Installed apps.)
    Nokia Map (7MB)
I uninstalled this application call Nokia Map and I free 7MB from the C.
But my MAP icon still found in the application menu and the MAP is still working fine.
Ohhhh dear, what had I done ?
    I also don't know ........
This morning I notice the latest update of OVI MAP (9MB).
After I download the update from OVI and installed, the Nokia Map is appear in the Installed apps. list again with 7MB. shhhhhh
** the goal is to free more memory of my N97, I might uninstall all the application until the phone is NO MORE MEMORY FULL issue.
    Best regards
    Anderson

Despite the phone being short of RAM you DO need about 20 meg free on C for the phone to run reasonably quickley, there are 100's of threads advising on this, Opera Mini is NOT a memory hog (although Opera Mobile is) there is no need for an anti virus on a symbian phone it is simply a waste of space and resources. Do a search on the forum for optimising memory you will get lots of advice.
