N97 mini cutting out

N97 Mini cuts out when using GPS. Phone gets quite hot & has happened twice since the recent upgrade to Ovi maps. This happened once before the upgrade but never since I started using a genuine Nokia car charger. All software is up to date, charger & cradle genuine Nokia. Anyone else suffering this problem?

All my phones get hot when using navigation, it's a very processor hungry application, also I've had crashing with N97, best to close all possible applications before using to leave maximum RAM whilst using the Navigation on the phone !

  • Mini cutting out after a few minutes

This problem has only developed in the past month or so. Basically my mini cuts out and shuts itself down entirely after only a few moments of running.
It did this once before when I was experimenting with iMovie years ago. I assumed it was the overheating safety measure kicking in as I was putting the machine under a lot of strain and the fan was going pretty loudly. As it didn't seem to have caused any major damage and it worked okay after cooling, I figured it was okay.
A couple of months ago I was running a few programs at the same time when the fan seemed to power up quite loudly again and it cut out again. Since then, the problem has become progressively worse. At first the fan would begin powering up for no real reason (running simple programs, machine temp monitor showing normal temperature) and now it will shut itself off after a minute or so of running regardless of whether I'm running any programs at all and before even the fan starts up. As such it is unusable and it is not even stable enough for me to do any real backup or get any of the important documents off the machine.
    Things I've tried:
Cleared as much dust as possible from the vents that may be interfering with airflow
Made sure it's got plenty of space around it
    Reset the PMU
Booted up from an external HD with a new minimal MacOSX install on it and booted up with as little connected or running as possible.
    The problem has persisted.
Are there any other suggestions for things I might try? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
The first part of your description certainly sounds like the protective shutdown due to overheating - particularly considering the increased fan speed immediately in advance of the shutdowns. However, the second part - where you describe shutdowns happening rapidly after booting the system up, and not seemingly associated with fan activity are not quite such classically clear protective shutdowns.
Even so, it seems pretty clear your mini is suffering overheating - and the fact it has done so before, and the problem not resolved, means that thermally induced shutdown is the most likely cause of the system behaviour you describe, and that it may be that the original problem was that the CPU heatsink may not have been firmly attached or that the thermal paste may have been misapplied or quickly degraded.
In this situation I'd open up the system and make sure that any and all debris inside is removed. even after you cleared the vents, there may be a considerable amount of dust and debris that has accumulated inside the system, and given there's not much room inside the casing for air to flow, even small amounts of extraneous material in there can cause problems. While the top is off, I'd also check that the fan is actually working.
Assuming all is clear and the fan running correctly, the next most likely problem is that the CPU heatsink is loose. After that, there is a possibility that the thermal pad needs replacing. This is a small pad that fits between the underside of the logic board and the base of the system with the purpose of draining some heat away from the processor to the base, and thus away to the surface on which the system sits. In itself, a failed pad would not be expected to cause the swift shutdown of the system you are experiencing, however, so disassembling the system purely to replace this is not likely to resolve the problem directly.
I would also be inclined to look at the power brick to see if there is an issue with that. If you know someone with a Mac mini (even a later Intel model), see if you can borrow their PSU for a brief test, or better yet, take your mini to their house and test it there. If the problem continues with a different PSU in a different location, and there is no problem with the heatsink or fan, then I suspect that over time your mini has been heating to higher temperatures than normal, and that eventually this had led to heat stressing of components that has now given rise to failure. You may find that if you run the system with the top casing removed and a fan blowing on it, that it will function long enough to rescue files. Trying this would be a good test to see if the problem is directly heat related.

  • Audio output using HDMI in 2010 mac mini cuts out. Anyone know of fixes?

I have a 2010 mac mini that I hook up with my Samsung C6300 LED tv using an HDMI monster cable. I have never had any issues withn this setup prior to the new Lion software installed and ever since then the audio will cut out for a split second every minute or so (very annoying). I listen to my music library and watch movies through itunes and vlc and I experience this problem with all these tasks. I also have a MacBook Pro (early 2011) that i experience no such issue with while performing the same tasks. Is anyone else having such issues or know of a fix. All my software is up to date so I know that is not the problem. Any help would be much appreciated.
    Sincerely
    jortiz0221

Lion has created numerous issues for 2010 MacMinis for
lots of folks.  However, it seems there is not a "one shot"
    fix for everyone.
For instance, I have no issues playing music from iTunes
on my Mini, but iTunes movies stutter some times to the
point of being unwatchable.  Yet, other software, PLEX and
XBMC for instance, have no similar issues for me.  But there
are others that are seeing the complete opposite from my
experiences.  Basically, I think Lion has too many "loose ends"
that are causing such a wide variety and unpredictability in
    its operation.
As for VLC, gave up on that long ago as it seemed to flakey
to me and never could get it to work consistantly.

  • N97 mini video out

Hi, i was trying to view a video recorded in a n97 mini in a tv screen. i connected a video out that came with an older n85 and played the video on the phone. the video played on the phone but not on the tv. the manual says i can output the video like this, it also said that while reproducing the video, it would appear on the tv set but not on the phone, and in my case, it was playing in the phone but not on the tv. as i mentioned, i was using a cable for video out with 3 exits that came with an n85, when i attach it the phone recognices it as a sound cable, or it does not say anything about video anyway (but the sound does not play in the tv set anyway), and i do not see, not in the tv and video section, neither in the 'accesories->video out' config anything to say, if i attach a cable in the av hole, is supposed to be a video cable, so i dont know if is something i passed by in the configuration of the phone, or is there a video out cable different than the one i am using that i am supposed to use, or what. yes i am sure the tv had the right imput selection, i even tried each option in the tv. any pointers?, tnx

You are obviously using the wrong cable. If the phone says it things you attached an audio cable, it does not recognize it as a video cable, so why should it try to send video out?
Get the right cable for a N97 (mini).

  • Why does my mini display port to hdmi adapter cut out intermittently?

I have a MacBook Air 2012. Using a bestbuy mini display port to hdmi adapter connecting to a sony led tv.  The picture and sound transmits to the tv, but the signal would cut out after 10-15 seconds and it would last about 3-5 seconds and then the picture would come back again.

to me something happened similar to me but after removing the connector and put it back was solved, and now to use it with my TV I have to make sure both are well connected to both the Mac and plug the HDMI cable and adapter tv .
I hope that solves your problems resolved as mine
    Blessings.
    Bendiciones.

  • Mac Mini Audio Intermittent over HDMI, Cuts out with Assertion in kernel.log

Hello. I've been having trouble with a mac mini (Mid 2011) that I bought on Thursday. It's running OSX 10.7. The Mac Mini is the $599 unit.
I've got it hooked up to my Sony BRAVIA HDTV (also this year's model) via HDMI, with audio configured to be delivered via HDMI to the TV alongside video. Initially the audio will play through my TV, but after an hour or two of watching something, it will cut out, and there will be no more sound coming out of the TV from the mac. Ultimately, the only way I can fix it is to reboot the Mac Mini. I've also observed that at about the same time sound cuts out, the following error message appears in kernel.log:
Aug 12 19:21:40 joshs-Mac-mini kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDAWidget at line 3957 goto handler
    Aug 12 19:22:10 --- last message repeated 5 times
As far as I know, assertions failures usually mean software problems (bugs). I suspect I may be encountering a kernel-level bug in Lion, as this error message is showing in kernel.log.
The following is a list of diagnostic steps I've taken:
    - I've double-checked the sound output device in preferences. It didn't spontaneously change from SONY TV (HDMI) after sound cut out.
    - I've tried changing output to the internal speakers. It plays sound from the mac mini (as expected). When I change it back to HDMI, still no sound from the TV.
    - I've tried turning off and back on the tv. No effect.
    - I've tried unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable. No effect.
    - I've tried replacing the HDMI cable with two other alternates. No effect.
    - I've tried other HDMI inputs for my TV with HDMI attached. No effect.
    - Note: I've got a ps3 and xbox360 on the TV that has successfully used the HDMI inputs and cables tested on. They've never had this type of problem, so I don't think there's a problem with the TV.
    - I've tried rebooting the mac and resetting the "PRAM" (Command-Option-P-R before the grey screen on bootup). Sound still cuts out after a while.
    - All updates are applied.
Does anybody else have any ideas about what I could try to fix this? This problem is pretty much a deal breaker, as rebooting the mac mini mid-movie kind of destroys the movie-watching experience.
    Thanks

I'd just like to jump in on this thread to report exactly the same problem.
2011 Mac Mini (the 2.5GHz i5 model) running Lion, Sony Bravia TV, HDMI sounds cuts out after a while with the console error "Aug 15 18:30:25 Mini kernel[0]: Sound assertion "0 != result" failed in AppleHDAWidget at line 3957 goto handler".
Interestingly, after the error occurs, I can still get 5.1 sound through Plex, but not through Quicktime. 2.0 sound and system sounds all fail until I reboot the system.
Any help would be appreciated. I would prefer not to have to return the Mini.
    Thanks.

  • All is set up ok but when I view a home movie the apple tv reverts to the menu at random times, sometimes every 30 secs or so, sometimes plays for mins before cutting out and then i have to enter menu, go to movies and select the movie then resume play bu

Whwn viewing home movies the movie cuts out back to the general menu at random, forcing me to enter menu again, reselect the movie and hit resume button.
this happens everytime I try to play a movie, maybe after 1 min of play then again after 3 mins, next time it might play for 6 mins then cut out and so on. The macbook pro is not reverting to sleep mode or closing down and the wifi signal is strong. So is the apple tv an expensive load of junk or what?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Intermittent problems are often a result of interference. Interference can be caused by other networks in the neighbourhood or from household electrical items.
You can download and install iStumbler (NetStumbler for windows users) to help you see which channels are used by neighbouring networks so that you can avoid them, but iStumbler will not see household items.
Refer to your router manual for instructions on changing your wifi channel or adjusting your multicast rate.
There are other types of problems that can affect networks, but this is by far the most common, hence worth mentioning first. Networks that have inherent issues can be seen to work differently with different versions of the same software. You might also try moving the Apple TV away from other electrical equipment.

  • N97 mini locking up - out of memory

I am currently experiencing an intermittent fault with my wife's N97 mini phones, where, unexplainable, it "locks up" and prevents any functions other than the Home screen.
It eventually indicates that it has run out of memory and to close applications. There are no applications running and the only way to clear this fault is to remove the battery temporarily, and then replace it and turn the phone back on. All is good until the next "lock-up", usually within 1 - 2 weeks.
We were advised to update the software, but this has not made any difference.
My own N97 mini has not had this fault occur to date.

Looks like some application is tying up the phone memory and not freeing it afterwards. It could be an application your wife installed recently or a setting she changed or corruption of one of the existing applications. Every time you remove the battery, you reboot the phone and free it up again. I suggest resetting the phone using the *#7370# reset. This reset will wipe all data on the phone so please backup your phone before resetting. Try to backup the bare minimum to minimise the possibility of restoring the cause after rthe reset.

  • Ipad mini audio is distorted and cuts out.

Since updating to ios 7 the ipad mini sound keeps cutting out and is constantly distorted through the speakers and through headphones.
The side button doesn't mute the sound even though it is set to do that in settings.
I have two other identical spec ipad minis that are both fine and have none of thee problems since upgrading to ios 7
    Any ideas?

I had the same problem, but it was fixed after I closed down all apps and restarted my iPad again.

  • MAC MINI- Airport Connection cutting out regularly

MAC MINI- 10.4.11 1.5GHz intel core solo
My mac (above) keeps losing airport connection (to my BT homehub router-which is newish)- Has been running fine for years-changed my router-was still running fine for a few weeks AND NOW....keeps cutting out wireless signal for no reason. I have other macs/comps on same signal (nearer router also!) which are unaffected-only mac mini is... I have tried everything I can think of and been on forums etc all day...
Cuts out-won't recognise my router- then after a restart it sometimes comes back on-sometimes just comes back on itself after an hour or so also.... When its on, the signal gradually loses strength till it gets to zero-then disconnects and won't recognise any wireless devices (it usually lists a few that are in my building)....SO- router is OK as other comps are fine- it must be mac mini fault- have had no software updates recently either-so really don't know what to do next! help!

    Hi,
thanks for your reply-I have tried every channel possible (before posting my first post)- but like I say -it connects fine at first (sometimes-especially if comp has been shut down overnight)-then after about 15-30 mins the bars start dropping and then it goes and won't come back on... I know it is not the router as my other mac (which is further away from router and also is a much older computer) has never had any problems like this before and doesn't have any while the mini is disconnecting..
I have tried everything I can think of and have spent hours and hours reading through other similar posts- but can't find anything that works....
If the mini macs have a weak antenna then why has it been ok in connecting since I bought it (was one of the first mini's to come out) ? Do you think it gets weaker with age? Why is it ok for a bit then disconnects, then is ok, then is not etc etc ??
Thanks for your help anyway-any other suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated as I am about to throw it out the window!!cheers.

  • Gps keeps cutting out on N97

I have just used navigation for the second time on the N97 and the gps signal keeps cutting out making it impossible to use voice guided navigation.
Tried it next to my old Navigator which worked fine once it picked up the signal which makes me think it's something to do with the hardware not the weather conditions.
The signal cuts out every 20 seconds or so intermittently and often can't pick it up again.
    Can anybody help?

To be honest I don´t think there´s anything you or we can do to sort this out, since it is pretty probable that it is a hardware problem.

  • N97 Mini Battery

    Hey y'all
Has anyone else been having battery problems with their N97 mini battery recently.  It started 7 days ago for me. I unplugged my phone mid charge, and noticed that on my phone the battery icon was still moving as if it was charging. I thought it was cute because maybe the atmosphere or my charisma were still charging my phone for me. I restarted my phone and it returned to normal.  The following day my phone did the same thing, only this time I didn’t restart it, but eventually my phone ran out of charge. Since then the battery life on my phone has been very poor, I only get about 8 hours max, and that’s when I have not been on the net or made anything more than one 10 minute phone call.  The battery icon has stopped moving when its unplugged, but the battery life is terrible.
I have updated my software today so I will monitor it, but seriously is there something up with my battery? It has left me short two days now where I’m in town and my phone has died. I am not happy.
    Any suggestions people?

My N97 Mini is currently useless as I can't get it charged.
I have experienced similar problems as have been referred here - and some extra too: E.g. my phone seemed to be able to utilize electricity from the air as the charging lamp was on and the indicators on screen were animated even though the USB cable was off!
Using the USB port in my laptop was soon not possible either. 'Power Surge On Hub Port. A USB device has exceeded the power limits of its hub port.' was the only result in any of the three ports.
Anyway I managed to deal with the problem until one day it refused to charge altogether.
I took it for repair and they said they re-fused something (but were not very convinced that it solved the actual problem and instructed that if the problems remain I should take it back and they'd send it to a central repair shop (or something like that). The charging could be done although by keeping the cable in a certain position etc.
But now it seems to be time to send it for real repair or replacement.
Now it just looks like charging, then shuts down after a while, restarts charging, shuts down, (this forever) without ever reaching enough power to get to point to give the PIN.
Before taking it to repair i was just wondering if this is actually a battery problem, not charging related as such. ---> Has anyone experience of having this solved simply by using a new battery?

  • N97 mini Keyboard Problems

When I'm using the slide keyboard, randomly the letter "r" when pressed, opens the camera. Letters "F" , "U" and "I" dont work........If the camera is opened If i press "f" and then "r" it takes a picture. A can solve this by turning OFF the phone and taking out the battery and the reinstalling and turning ON. But is really annoying to do this every 5 minutes. Does anyone know how to solve this problem definitely?? I've tried hard reset  and won't work.

Does anybody know, when it is a newer software for N97 Mini ? I have discover some problems with the phone, and some functions I really misses from my old N95 8 Gb..
When you receive a MMS, you can not choose to answer the MMS with an SMS, you must quit, then make an SMS to the person you received the MMS from, that`s a good step bacwords..
There ar altso a lot of functions in the camera part, thats gone, you can`t adjust a picture to 5x7" anymore, only manuel cutting of the pictures or set as background.
I really misses my N95 8 GB, it had it all and it was able to use on the Internet to..
After all these years with SE, i suddenly got a N95 8Gb. And now I begin to like it!!
