N97 Mistery of dual flashLED

Hi guys, i just bought my new nokia N97 white. I found a problem with the flash led. So i want to know whether its just me, or all the N97 in the world (Fatal Design Problem). Check out the photo in the attachment.
The problem are, when i use my expensive phone in low light room, the light from flash led is actually reflected by the camera cover slider's wall, creating a bright area in the photo. Since the flash led is on the left side of the lens(from viewfinder point of view), the picture will have some bright area at left. When i take picture with upsidedown position, the picture will have some bright area at right. So, is there any suggestion to avoid that bright area.

ok LED has rather poor performance in low light conditions however i just took these pics one is with the light on the other is with light off.
you can see the difference but the image is actually good. try cleaning your lense also looks like there is some particles on it.

  • N95, N96 dual CPU, N97 single? Dual CPU s60 5th ed...

I've been playing around with Nokia's new QT development stuff. It's all pretty neat. It would be even better if I could use it to develop for Symbian under Linux or Mac, but that asides..
I came across a list of platform types:
Installer for all S60 5.0 (5th Edition) devices with a single CPU, such as the N97 and 5800 XpressMusic
Seems reasonable, but I also saw:Installer for all S60 5.0 (5th Edition) devices with dual CPUs
Hmmmm.. dual CPU S60 5th edition?
It lists some S60 3rd edition dual cpu phones too: N95 and N96
So, why exactly is the N95/N96 dual cpu, but the N97 isn't? Sure that was a step backwards?
Interesting though.. I wonder what the first dual CPU S605th phone will be? Presumably, something faaar better than the somewhat dull N97! I mean, honestly.. who wouldn't put a decent GPU in their flagship phone? presumably the same people who would put OS storage in double digit MB.. grrrr ..

I aggree, however I'm not sure these devices are frog leaping to that extent.
In the case of the N95, the dual core refers to core CPU and an additional DSP and GPU
    N95: OMAP2420 - 330 MHz ARM1136 + 220 MHz C55x DSP + PowerVR MBX GPU
The N97, however,is of the same architecture (ARMv6) but with a higher clock rate (434MHz) It isn't a new generation chip per se. It's just running faster.. and without the GPU..
The N96 is a bit different.. Apparently the difference between the N95 v N96:
CPU: N96 has dual ARM9 264MHz with no floating point instructions (N95 has dual ARM11 332Mhz with vector floating point or graphics accelerator)
So, the N97 has the speed of the ARM11 from the N95, but all of the same missing features as the N96.. more or less..
This makes the prospect of a dual cpu s60 5th all the more intriguing

  • Dual boot mistery

Hi guys. I've installed the Windows 10 PRO TP build 10049 ugrade on my pc....In this I've also installed Windows 7 in Dual Boot. Before this upgrade had to choose which OS to start, after the upgrading, the starting OS is W10 PRO TP build 10049 with any
possibilities to choose the Windows 7 partition. Is there anyone else that have this kind of problem?
    thanks guys....

  • IPhone 4S iOS 5.0.1 Dual Sim failure

    Hello,
First of all I want to clarify what I mean by Dual Sim. I am using the iPhone with this SIM from the first 2G model, and it was working perfectly.
It is one sim with two phone numbers (one forwards the calls to the other). This options is offered by the Romanian carrier Vodafone for business clients.
I am not talking about two phisical sim cards.
Starting yesterday evening after upgrading to iOS 5.0.1 on my iPhone 4S (bought in Germany) I can't really use the phone anymore, I hardly have any signal and nobody can call me on both numbers.
I changed the sim with a new one from Vodafone but had no luck.
The sim is working anyway perfectly on other iPhone models (3g, 3gs, 4) with a lower iOS version than 5.0.1.
I really hope Apple will issue an update as soon as possible because right now I have to go back to an older model in order to use my phone.
Any help and/or feedback would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Sebastian

    Hi Sebastian,
I do have a similar problem. I also use a dual sim that works on iPhone4 and iPhone 3GS perfectly. I obtain the dual SIM service from the Spanish carrier Movistar.
If I go to Settings > General > Phone > SIM Applications > Dual, I am able to see wich line is active, but I can not change from one to another. If I try to change the line, the phone loses its network service and I have to switch it off and on again to recover the network service and being able to talk, text and navigate.
With 3GS and 4 I could perfectly change from one number to the other one (Before I had a Nokia N97 and it also worked perfectly). With my brand new 4S (iOS 5.0) I do have to switch the phone off and on again in order to change to the line I want to use.
Movistar Spain has recognized there is an issue with iPhone 4S and dual microsim cards. They say  they are waiting for Apple to approve some kind of new version (I guess they talk about a new iOS version but I'm not sure).
I know there is more people at Spain using this service with Movistar and they are becoming really angry (using 4S with iOS 5.0 and 5.0.1), because this issue was reported more than a month ago. It's really frustrating having paid for such an expensive phone and suffering this kind of problems...
I hope Apple will give us a solution really soon.
    Regards.

  • Give me an E72 with a dual sim

    My dream phone!
    A nokia e72 with a dual sim.
Only a real traveller with business interest in multiple countries will know the true value of a dual sim phone.  I have been using nokia phones for over 15 years now.  I always carried 3 to 4 phones at any given time, until 2006 when I stumbled upon a chinese make dual sim touch phone.  It worked alright ( I mean it served the purpose) but the user interface was lousy, it had no wifi and couldnt sync my contacts.  And worst of all it just stopped working after a few months.  Then came Samsung D880.  A very good phone indeed ! but again no wifi.  So am currently using the D880 for my overseas trips. I have one etisalat sim installed permanently in the second slot of the D880 and I insert a sim slot 1 wherever I go. But I love my Nokia e71 and can not do without it, so I have a second etisalat sim with the same number installed in my e71.  So when I am in Dubai, I switch the samsung D880 off. and use my e71.  When I am abroad, I put my e71 in offline mode and switch on my D880.  Keeping y e71 offline, still allows me to access my emails thru wifi when I am outside my office or home.
I also looked at the new samsung touchscreen dual sim phone, but was not impressed.  No wifi ! and I hate using a stylus.
So until such time Nokia brings out a dual sim phone with wifi and all the other usual great features, I guess I have to stick to my samsung d880 for my travel needs.  And as for my e71, I am happy with it but will surely grab an e72 as soon as it appears in the stores.  I did a mistake of buying the N97 last month, got carried away actually, but after a couple of days of playing with the resistive touch screen I gifted it off to some one dear.  Don't get me wrong, the n97 is the king of smartphones as on date in the market, with its awesome features and 32 gigs of memory, but it simply is not for me.
    Cheers
    Shaks

There is a very high demand for a Dual SimCard GSM phone. Many like me have to carry two mobile phones because of:
    1. Mobile operation connectivity in different areas
    2. Frequent travel domestic and international
    3. Different business and personal numbers
    4. Price of calling different mobile networks
    5. Old phone number which needs to be gradually phased out
    6. Support engineers having to carry bersonal and support mobile after office hours... etc
These are all compelling arguments for having products with dual sim capability and this perhaps why Smasung has launched 5 different dual sim models in a short time span.
I dislike samsung because of its usability and try to only stick with IPhone or Nokia when it comes to mobile phones.
India is a huge consumer base for mobile phones and a dual sim phone in my opinion can go a long way to increase the market share of apple.
Web search engines show a large number of search hits for dual sim phone and dual sim ghost cards. For travelers like me it has become a higher priority to choose a mobile phone with dual sim capability over camera and other features.

  • Is the N97 Mail for Exchange or MfE 'provisionable...

Background info:  I used to carry two phones, the N95 and the E51.  Before MfE 2.0 came out, MfE was not installable on the N95 (or any N series phones).  So I bought the E51 so that I can use MfE to have my corporate mail pushed to me.  Today, I'm the proud owner of the N97, with MfE 2.9.176 installed.  No more carrying 2 phones, and everything is synchronizing just fine.
Last week, my company announced a new policy regarding mobile devices.  Soon, they will enforce new security policies as available in Exchange 2003 SP2.   This really got me worried, because I spent quite a lot of money in investing in the N97!
We all know that Nokia states that only the E series devices fully support all security policies of Exchange servers.  (Nokia calls this 'provisionable' versus 'non-provisionable' devices.)  But here's the kicker.  In the Mail for Exchange Guide for Administrators (http://nds1.nokia.com/phones/files/guides/MfE_admin_guide_140709.pdf), in chapter 2, section 2, part 1 titled "Are your devices 'provisionable'?", it states the following:
    Eseries devices are provisionable
Nseries devices previous to S60 3.0 Feature Pack 2 (FP2) are not provisionable
Nseries devices after S60 3.0 FP2 may be provisionable
Supported devices not designated Eseries or Nseries may or may not be provisionable.
Well, that is kind of some good news.  But it left out key information regarding my N97, specifically S60 5.0.  Does anyone know if the N97 can be categorized together with those Nseries devices "after 3.0 FP2"?  Or can anyone identify specifically what security policies/features are provisionable in the N97 device?  This is important because I need to make the case with the IT management to put me in the exception list, if at all possible.  But I don't want to stir up anything until I know exactly what can or cannot be done with the N97.  This will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much.

Not only is Nokia's myriad of different web sites each requiring its own login credentials, they also have a myriad of places to go get software.  I have always thought that http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com will have all the latest enterprise software coming from Nokia, but no, that is not the case.  It turns out that http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/mail-for-exchange is the place to get the latest version.  Just select your device, and it'll give you the download link for the latest.
Just so you know, even http://www.businesssoftware.nokia.com doesn't have N97 listed as a device yet.
I really hope Nokia takes this consistency issue seriously just like how they're working on the consolidation of logins...

  • N97 contacts sync problems

Is there anyway around the N97 creating dual entries for contacts you put in your favorite contacts in the home page? I noticed this was the case when syncing to my E90. The other odd thing was syncing to the E90 removed all the favorite contacts.

I have the same problem with my N97 mini. I used gmail for months without any problem but since about a week it either keeps synchronizing forever (without receiving any mail) or stops and also no mail received. Looking at the web version, new mails are there!

  • N97 - T-mobile SIM will not allow 3g connection to...

My N97 has US AT&T 3g radio frequencies. I have a T-mobile sim card with unlimited data and an AT&T card with very limited data.
With an AT&T sim card the N97 talks to the AT&T USA towers at "3.5G" speeds no problem. Beauty!
But  when I put my T-mobile sim card in it it will only connect to T-mobile towers. It sees that there is a T-mobile tower and an ATT tower no problem but it will only talk to the tmo tower.
If there is no T-mo tower it will connect to the ATT tower but it will not be at 3G just edge.
I have tried to enter the apn settings manually but i am tripping up somewhere.
Called T-mo and tier 3 tech support said that she could see no reason why it should not work.   I pressed to find out if T-mo provisioned their sims to work at 3G soeeds ONLY on t-mo towers but she said that that was not the case.
N97 user manual mentions apn alterations being contingent on a PIN2 number coming off the sim card, but that did not sound tright to t-mo support.
Am i missing a very obvious thing like a switch called "turn on data roaming" ? My Nexus1 has that.
    Apologies for the scattered description.
    TIA

N97 does not have T Mobile 3 G frequency of 1700. It is impossible to get TMobile 3G on the N97. It does have the the 1900/2100 which is used by ATT.
The only Nokia products that works on both ATT and Tmobile 3G network are N8, C7& C6-01.
There are no other Mobile phone makers who offer  dual 3G for ATT and Tmobile.
If you need an excellent device to work on TMobile 3G network, try the N900. it is somewhat of a Computer with Cell phone and gets some getting used to. But it beats any other mobile device to date and works with TMobile 3G network.

  • Why a function within a SELECT FROM DUAL is faster?

1)I have a SELECT with a function. Ex:
    "SELECT DISTINCT function(...) FROM table"
2)I changed the SELECT and put the function inside a SUB-SELECT with FROM DUAL. Ex:
"SELECT DISTINCT (SELECT function(...) FROM DUAL) FROM table"
3)The second SELECT is faster than the first.
I discovered this problem on my tables and my functions. So I did a generic example for this forum with a common function and large table. My results:
Table has 2.196.058 records and the field is a VARCHAR2:
SELECT DISTINCT SUBSTR(field, 2) FROM Table -> Executed in 110 seconds
SELECT DISTINCT (SELECT SUBSTR(field, 2) FROM DUAL) FROM Table -> Executed in 39 seconds
Why "SELECT DISTINCT (SELECT function(...) FROM DUAL) FROM table" is faster than "SELECT DISTINCT function(...) FROM table"
    thanks,
    Fernando

    Hi hoek,
I followed your informations and, sorry, I am more confused! I did an interesting example below.
    1)I created a table:
    CREATE TABLE T
         name VARCHAR2(50)
    );     2)I inserted 10 lines:
    NAME
    A
    B
    C
    D
    E
    F
    G
    H
    I
J                                                  3)I created a function that returns the parameter concatenated with the current millisecond:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION f (param1 IN VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR IS
    BEGIN
         return param1 || '-' || to_char(CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, 'FF');
    END;     4)The query(A): SELECT f(name) AS col1, f(name) AS col2, f(name) AS col3 FROM t; gave me:

4)The query(B): SELECT (SELECT f(name) FROM Dual) AS col1, (SELECT f(name) FROM Dual) AS col2, (SELECT f(name) FROM Dual) AS col3 FROM t; gave me:
    COL1        COL2        COL3

J-254495000 J-254523000 J-254551000The result generated new values too.
5)I changed the function and I put the DETERMINISTIC clause:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION f (param1 IN VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR DETERMINISTIC IS
    BEGIN
         return param1 || '-' || to_char(CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, 'FF');
END;     6)I repeated the queries(A) and (B) and the result has generated different values. Then, with the DETERMINISTIC clause, the result has not changed
7)I changed the function and I put the RESULT_CACHE clause:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION f (param1 IN VARCHAR2) RETURN VARCHAR RESULT_CACHE IS
    BEGIN
         return param1 || '-' || to_char(CURRENT_TIMESTAMP, 'FF');
END;8)I repeated the query(A) and now, the result was different:
    COL1        COL2        COL3
    A-381048000 A-381048000 A-381048000
    B-381242000 B-381242000 B-381242000

J-381971000 J-381971000 J-381971000The line columns are equals and if I repeat the SELECT, all the result is the same too. The query(B) returned the same result like the query(A)! Now I see the cache in action!
After the tests, I concluded that the function in the subquery doesn't use cache and it is faster than the normal function. The mistery continues...

  • White banding on N97 photo's with flash

I'm seeing a problem  with photo's taken in the dark on my N97, sometimes when the flash is used the left hand side of the image has a white bar running top to bottom. Looking closely at the lens there is a scratch running down the middle. Possible cause?

Although the problem is widespread, I'm pretty sure some phones are less fortunate than others in this regard.  Other users have reported that their white banding isn't so bad, and others are reporting really bad.  My first N97 was bearable.  The second one I received, well, is horrendous.  I have no idea what I'm going to do about it just yet...

  • N97: Deleted images still appear as thumnails

I deleted some images and videos from my N97 using the Mass Memory connection via my PC.
They are definitely gone from the phone, however they are still showing up in the photo app on the phone. When I click on the thumbnail of a photo, I even get  a detailed view, but after trying to zoom in the photo app crashes. I can't delete the image, the error message says "general system error".
For videos that show up in the photo app, when I select them it says "Unable to connect to server: File not found".
Also, trying to delete the thumbnail results in the same general error.
    Any solutions?

Try this...  Connect your N97 using Mass Storage mode.  If you have Windows, open up the drive associated with the N97 under My Computer.  Before going anywhere, make sure you have your Windows Explorer set to show hidden files as well.  Go to Tools > Folder Options > View.  Somewhere in there you'll see a branch called "Hidden files and folders".  Select "Show hidden files and folders".  Hit Apply and Ok.
Now, you'll see in your mass storage drive a folder called "Private".  Open Private > 101ffc31.  Then delete glxmdstn.  Unplug your phone, and re-open your Photos app.  See if that helps.  (Weird thing is that even if you use Y-browser and have it signed with the full 17-capability certificate, the Y-browser still can't see this Private folder!  So no use trying to find the folder or file in Y-browser.)
Caveat:  There is a slight bug with the N97.  If you have apps installed to the built-in bigger drive, while connected in mass storage mode, all your apps installed there will disappear, as if you lost your apps.  Not to worry, that's because in mass storage mode, the phone OS is prevented from accessing that internal drive.  Once you unplug the USB cable, everything will go back to normal.  This is not a bug, but the bug is this:
If you have your Messaging app set to store messages in this internal drive ("E: mass memory"), then after unplugging the phone, your Messaging app will seem like you have lost all your text messages and mailboxes.  Before you freak out, do not try to rebuild your mailboxes.  The data is still in the internal drive.  Simply go to the Messaging app > Options > Settings > Other and change the "Memory in use" back to "E: Mass memory".  Go back to your Messaging app, and all your SMS and mailboxes and emails will be back there.  The only thing is that if you have the email widget set in your home screen, then you'll have to choose a default Mailbox again.  This is an annoying bug...
If the above solution helps, I wouldn't mind the kudos.  ;-)

  • N97 Mini vs E72

    N97 Mini vs E72
Not sure if i should post this question just here or post it both here and in the E series sub forum, i'll post it in both just in case....
    N97 Mini Pros
    Touch Screen
    Bigger Screen
    Fold out keypad
    30fps Video (VGA) quality
    5mp Carl Zies lens
Dual Flash (flash for video and flash for photos)
    E72 Pros
    600mhz cpu
    Mega 3G (Next G access)
Symbian 3rd (More apps available eg coreplayer)
    Bigger Battery/Longer life.
Now i have the E72, but i've been trying to talk my wife into having the N97 mini, but she says why don't I have the N87 and she can have my E72, well for me, it's literally a coin toss, they both have features i Like, both have the mandatory 5mp camera, both have wifi, compass, gps all the high end features... but the N97 mini offers a nice big keyboard where as the E72 does not but the E72 offers extra frequencies which work with high speed on other networks.
So for me it comes down to build quality and i can't fault the E72, in all honesty if I had of just bought an N97 mini (instead ot the E72 just 1 week ago) i'd probably wish to keep the N97 mini...
So i have an E72 1 week old,, and my wife's contract ends in only a couple of months, so now were looking at an upgrade for her...   have no idea which i prefer, anyone got both or played with both the E72 and the N97 mini, what's your advice?... i can't really fault the E72, im scared the N97 mini will break in 10 minutes....

I could not agree with you more about how similar the E71 is to the E72, for example I can charge the phone, go bed, leaving the "breathe" light on if you've seen that, it lights up every 10 seconds or so then slowly fades out ... but anyway come 8 hours later, I thought let's just plug it into charge see how much power's actually lost, plugged it in, beep, finished charging please remove.... i mean wow, amazing.....  so i got curious made a phone call browsed a few sites sent an sms then plugged it in, again it was still fully charged...
Wonderful phone, not to mention Drive C is 250meg nand memory, i've got 200+ meg left with about 30 apps installed, i'd not even get close to that on the N95 or 6710, it's yet to crash, it froze once but that was my own fault for not knowing what i was doing with the scummvm emulator btw - curse of monkey island runs perfectly but the optical keypad has to be held down while you click up/down/left/right (basically all around your thumb while keeping it pressed) but lol anyway...
It's a great phone, but then i think about the touch screen, bigger screen for playing videos on then i remember apps like coreplayer wont run properly on it, but then i think ah but the nice big keyboard for internet browsing then i think but ah battery life....
Maybe I'll wait for the N900 lol, but then there wont be Video Calling support, no compass, no ability (as of yet) to assign pics or is it videos to callers in contacts... but the N900 does have the ability to play divx...
BLAHHHH... Nokia do us all a favor add native support for DivX over UPNP/DLNA the N97 Mini would  be as near perfect ... but then i think to myself, web browsing, the N97 only has a 420mhz cpu and Adobe requires 500mhz for their new flash applications hopefully due this year.... that rules out the N97, back to the E72, yes it will run it but it will be a let down on the small screen LOL...
Then i start thinking about the N95 with it's omap and dedicated 3D GPU, and how that can play quake 3 and yet 5 years later their flagship N97 does not even come close, now we have other manufactures with either 1ghz snapdragon cpu's or CPU's with GPU's ....
So the perfect phone from Nokia would be.
    N98 - Specs
    *8Mpix camera
*C Drive with 250meg of NAND memory,
*Querty Keyboard, but make sure 4 rows down, with `1234567890-= number keys at the top.
    *16gig-32gig
*600 mhz (min) with a GPU, eg Omap or even a Tegra CPU with GPU or SnapDragon, or eventually an Atom to compete with Apple's Iphone for Games.
    *GPS
    *Wifi
    *Compass
    *Acclerometer
    *Touch Screen
*Native DivX support in conjunection with UPNP
*Dual flash (but no biggy) make sure camera cover
    *Large battery 1.5amp/h at least
    *128meg of RAM
Put a lot of effort into making sure that everything can be turned off widget wise remove any fluff that's not needed on startup let the user install the apps don't assume keep the power
consumption as low as possible, go speak to the guys who do the E series they have this
done perfectly.... don't get it to automatically get email just make sure all energy hungry apps are off as default, this way people don't need to spend 2 hours changing settings instead they can spend just 1 hour enabling what they want.
And 1 more thing, filesharing, it would be nice to be able to map a drive over the network rather
than having to create a webserver to do the job.
And if you did all that, you'd have the ultimate flagship device.... the N900 is about 80% away from perfect in terms of what it should be able to do, if not for lacking the compass and a couple of other things it would be damn near perfect.

  • N97 turned off for no apparent reason

I was using my n97 this morning to read the news on BBC, after pressing on the back button the screen locked up, tried again, then tried one flick of the side slide button and the screen went blank. The device had just switched itself off, it didn't warn about sutting down or anything, just went off like the battery had been pulled. A £450 so called flagship device.
I have also noticed if I go and look at some photos, or even listen to the radio, then go back to the main screen and later press the Applications button on screen, it takes to to photos, or the Radio screen, when I should be taken to the Applications screen.
    FW v20
    full battery
no extras software added to the device
the only software running was the web browser
I have found the more I use the n97 the worse it becomes!

    Hello,
I have the same problem on my N97. It turning off when I leave it for longer period of time without using it. I have latest firmware v20. I have no comparison to the previous firmware versions because I have N97 for only one month. It turning off in dual and single mode - it has no meaning which one I'm using.
Does anyone have idea how to fix this problem? Maybe the new version of firmware will solve it?

  • N97 packet data connection on hold

Good day,I have a N97 with an unlimited data plan. But I´m having a problem, when I receive or make call or send text message my phone show this message “packet data connection on hold”, and when I finish the call or sent the text message the phone shows  “Packet data connection active”. There is any way that I can change this? I want to have my data connection always active. Thanks in advance for your help
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

you would have to go into the settings - connectivity- the first tab is network - select this and it tells you network mode, select this and you can set it to dual mode - umts or gms only mode. if your phone was made for your region and it supports the frequency that the network provides then it should work in 3g if it does not which is possible then it will only work on edge
