N97 questions

Hi, there, I am thinking of buying a N97, but have the following questions want to know about:
1. Can I change the battery of N97? or it's like iPhone that battery is sealed?
 2. can I remove the Facebook widget?
3. can I store the map for GPS in micro SD card? or it must be stored in internal memory?
 4. can the email attachment be opened directly?
5. can N97 support extended office document types? such as .docx, .pptx, xlsx , can I create or edit such files?
6. I am using 6230, every time I change the battery or the SIM card, the time and date are reset to default and I have to correct them. Does N97 have this problem too?
 7. can I connect N97 to an external bluetooth keyboard for easy typing?
I would appreciate any one can answer my questions. Thanks.

It is removable.. like all Nokias
 2. can I remove the Facebook widget?
Yes, it is installable and removable like all widgets on the system
3. can I store the map for GPS in micro SD card? or it must be stored in internal memory?
The ovi maps application (or ovi-suite) allows maps to be downlaoded to the device either the SD card or 32gig internal.. but not both
 4. can the email attachment be opened directly?
text/html/png/jpg/media yes..
HTML emails are not displayed automatically and must be opened as an attachment
5. can N97 support extended office document types? such as .docx, .pptx, xlsx , can I create or edit such files?
quickoffice provides read only access to recent micosoft formats and write/create with a paid for update. the quick office bundled with my device did not work at all.. it was a mistake to have had it included.. Any updates (including updates to make the viewer work) will eat valuable "C:" storage..
6. I am using 6230, every time I change the battery or the SIM card, the time and date are reset to default and I have to correct them. Does N97 have this problem too?
I've not seen it do that, but I don't remove my sim very often.. This problem seems to occur on OLD handsets.. My 7710 handset started doing this about 3 years ago!
 7. can I connect N97 to an external bluetooth keyboard for easy typing?
The S60 driver can be installed, but it is not bundled with the device... look up su-8w for driver info
I would appreciate any one can answer my questions. Thanks.

  • More N97 Questions!

Oh yes, more questions about Nokia's infamous flagship phone the N97!
    Background
I've had my phone little over 2 weeks now and at first I was very impressed - the specs are good and the feel of the phone is superb!
However like all N series Nokia's this too has had the same faults as previous N series phones! - my previous phone was the 5800 and although i liked this phone when the N97 was released I had to get it although in the back of my mind I was thinking it's going to be slow and crash all the time....
In comparison to the 5800 this phone is a lot slower at processing this (simple things like booting up and it's slower, slow tranistions and bugs with the new fancy widgets they have included)!
     Question1:
When the phone is locked and I receive a call it comes up on the screen with the answer or unlock buttons (gifs)?
Recently I have missed a few calls because I have tried to answer the call by pressing the button on the screen (when the phone is locked) however nothing happens... then when I try to unlock it nothing happens meaning that I've missed the call!
    Question2:
Is there anyway of having email automatically connected?
I use my personal email on my phone and obviously it doesn't come through unless I connect to it manually - is there anyway of changing this to make it automatic?
    Thanks in advance

    Q1
See the onscreen prompts when a call comes in.
To accept and answer the call follow the prompt, and swipe the green, flashing "Answer"  ticker to the right (in the direction of the arrow).
To unlock the touch screen, so you can get more options to choose to accept and answer, or to reject the call, swipe the blue flashing "Unlock" ticker to the left (in the direction of the arrow).
    Q2
I have my email widget on my homescreen.
With your email account on the screen, go to:-
    Options
    Automatic retrieval

  • Nokia N97: Questions

    Questions:
    1.  how can i see al the phone and memory contenst through the PC Suite file manager when it seems all files are protected and hidden?
    2.  how can i move files from pc memory to mass memory so that i have more free memory on the phone?  What files can be moved?
    3.  I am trying to install N-Gage but after installing the message reads to make a reboot:  does this mean a switch off and switch on process or there is a reboot procedure?
    4.  how come N97 will not switch on if the sync cable is inserted in the phone?
    5.  how come i am not allowed to update to firmware 2..........?

Hi, I'll try and answer you
1-connect in mass memory/data transfer mode and set computer to 'show hidden files' then go into 'my computer; phone will show as seperate drives E/F
5-Drag and drop, but All Files cannot be moved, most apps can, facebook, accuweather etc, but you need to delete and re-install, and some things like maps (application) and nokia messaging will ONLY install on C so only install things you really want. Also in messaging-Options-settings-other, set memory in use to E
3-Reboot means turn phone off and on (like computer) but N-Gage is a waste of space and being killed off, all moved to Ovi
4-It's a trait of all nokia phones that they will not fully function when connected by usb (you can't sync music, mwssageing memory will resoert back to C) Normally happens in mass storage mode but occurs in PC Suite mobe also
5=Software updates are restricted on 'locked' phones or to certain product codes check Nokia web site for the latest software available for your product code or call your phone supplier.
Finally try the user search at top of page, loads and loads of advice and answers
    Good Luck

  • NW 09 - N97 Questions

Were any questions asked about the poor functionality of the N97 at NW 09?? If so, what were the answers?

Thats nokia's way of shutting up N97 onwners who are complaining about their N97. Just think to your self why would they just all of a sudden give you a new feature on your phone now? This should have been added since first day the N97 launched.

  • N97 Question / help

Hi i formated my n97 and now my guitar, brain, and spore game are gone how can i get them back? without buying them because they're free it comes with n97.....anyone know please reply

hmmm i would contact nokia care and ask them as i don't think that they will be avaliable anywhere else. the games you mention are installed on memory after firmware is installed, it will get erased every time you format your device unless there is a way to transfer it to a memory card .

  • N97 - Maps/Navigation Question (probably a rather ...

I have managed to update my actual maps. So that's good. My compass seems to work, so that is also good.
Before the Maps update I managed to save my home address and set it as a Favourite. Since the update of Maps (the app) and the actual maps themselves, I can't seem to save another Favourite location – such as my work address.
So, this may be a very dumb question, but I'm allowed a few surely? LOL Phones I'm OK with, computers are my livelihood – but GPS is a whole new confusing world to me. OK – I get the basic concept – my device communicates with a silver dish in the sky and decides where I am, I tell it where I want to go, it determines where that is and charts a route for me and guides me on my way (I hope – if the Telstra ad on TV here is any indication, that could be problematic).
How do I save a darn new address and make it a Favourite – I can't even save an address now, yet clearly I did before, because my home address is still there.
Also, I gather I have to subscribe to this thing if I actually want driving instructions etc. For $79.99 a year, it seems rather expensive – what am I actually getting for that $79 when the use of the satellite seems to be charged on my phone bill.
    I'm so confused.
Can someone please give me a kindergarten intro to GPS/Maps/what am I paying for/anything else I need to know?  How to save an address would be a good start!  Or is the answer to that, that my trial period has run out?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Dear Advanced Sage.
There are 4 components to a "SatNav" system.
1 - A GPS device, which triangulates your position using satellites in space. The same principle that land surveyors use to locate a point by measuring its distance from (at least) 2 other points.Your location is identified as a pair of co-ordinates on the world mapping convention system, latitude and longitude.
    2 - A digitised map (or twelve).
3 - Some software which  locates the identified co-ordinates on the digitised map, and the co-ordinates of any other "known"location. The map includes data about the various roads between the 2 identified locations, and determines the permutations of ways to get from A to B. According to your chosen priorities (faster route, shorter route, no toll roads, no ferries, etc) the software will inform you of the "best" route. It will normally do this by showing you this route, possibly step by step, on the screen of your SatNav.
The cost of these 3 elements  is paid for (once and for all) in the purchase of the phone.
To make the work of the number 1 component easier, that is, the task of the GPS to locate you in the first place, the GPS designers came up with AGPS - "Assisted" GPS. The assistance comes from the phones natural ability know where it is to a crude, but useful, extent by knowing the location of its "cell". This knowledge helps the GPS to calculate its position more quickly, by narrowing down its area of search. For the GPS to acquire this information, it needs to use the phones data connection to send and receive a small chunk of data about the cell, which gives the initial rough position to the GPS.
If you select this AGPS option in your "Positioning" settings, you have to pay for the data connection, or it will come from your data allowance. It's not a lot, and speeds up the operation of the GPS, but it's not necessary for the operation of the GPS.
4 - If, in addition to the visual directions from A to B, as shown on your screen, you want the SatNav to give you directions as you travel, this is known as "Navigation". It's like having a Navigator (as in rallying) sitting in the passenger seat, giving you directions as you go.
Nokia charge a license fee for this "Navigation". From what I've seen recently, the current licenses on offer cover periods up to 1 year. I bought my Navigation license for my old N95, and I was then able to buy a 3 year license, which worked out cheaper per year. I've now tranferred my license from my old N95 to my new N97.
Actually, I didn't have to do anything to "transfer" the license. You can set the license, on the Nokia server, to be linked to either your sim card, or your phone. If you link it to your phone, it will work with any sim card in the phone. If you link it to the sim card, your license will work. no matter what (nokia SatNav) phone you put your sim card in.
    That's about it really.
To sum up, the GPS, software, and maps are all included in the price of the phone, including the software and maps updates. If you choose AGPS you will have to pay for the small data charges from your data allowance. (There's no point in buying this phone without an "unlimited" data allowance - personal opinion). For "Navigation", turn-by-turn direction, you will have to pay for a license.
For what it's worth. I still have my old N95. I felt sorry for it, it's still a great phone, because it was left with no "Navigation" license, although I still had a perfectly working GPS. So I treated it to a copy of Garmin Mobile XT software. This installed perfectly on the N95, and, unlike the Nokia "Navigation" license, you only pay once. There's no term license. Once you've bought it, it's yours. It cost £50 GBP, and is accurate and easier to use than Nokia Maps. It wouldn't work on my N97, though, so I guess it is only for Symbian 3 devices, not Symbian 5. I bought a cheap "Pay and Go" sim card, to enable the Garmin software to use AGPS. The first time I used it thoug, it worked perfectly, and was quick to find my location, even without the AGPS assistance. A lovely bit of software.
    Phew ...

  • N97 mini: a few questions (touchscreen, battery, k...

    Hi all,
I have a few questions on the N97 mini I was hoping you guys could help me with:
touchscreen and navigation arrows: if I choose to, can I avoid to use the touchscreen and resort to the arrows in the keyboard? For example, to navigate in a web page
battery life: what's your experience so far?
keyboard: I understand this is very subjective, but how are you finding it? I hate to type on touchscreens. Do you find it convenient or is it annoying to open the sliding keyboard every single time?
I am considering moving from the E71 to the N97 mini, because an operator has a pretty good deal on it, and because I'd like a bigger keyboard and bigger screen, even though I understand this comes at the price of reduced battery life.

I have N97 and fully drain it before the end of the day and so have a spare battery, this is not because the phone or battery are bad ! It's because I am constantly using it, I have apps running all the time, watch video every lunch time, browse the web whenever I get a spare 5 minutes, txt and e-mail and even make the occasional call !! Lol
I have never used a phone as much as this one and was very 'anti touchscreen' before I got it, and only took the chance brcause of physical keypad, but I wouldn't go back, not saying E-series aren't good phones but 'fun factor' on a larger touch screen is massively more. Plus it will still do all the 'normal 'stuff fine. Give it a go

  • N97 Mini questions

Hi Ive just got a few questions
is there a way to turn the vibration off for when you lock the keys using the slide button but keep vibration fr when receiving alerts?
is there a way to increase the vibration so its more noticable?
Is there a way to have the battery life show as a percentage rather then as bars on the homescreen?
Is there a way to increase batterry life?
Is there an emergency charger that is compatible with the N97 mini ?
I have seen small memory cards such as these http://www.foneshop.com/nokia/n97-mini/memory-cards/sandisk-16gb-micro-sd-transflash-memory-card
are these the type that are used in N97 minis?
My n97 mini currently has an 8GB memory card i believe, can I install a 16GB card into it? will that effect anything badly?
How would I go about that? Is there an easy way to transfer all the data between those memory cards?
Is there an application for the N97 mini that will track busses (i live in York UK so i would mostly be interested in busses there)

Well I only got the phone yesterday, so I'm not exactly an expert ;-)
    But some I can answer.
Battery life. If you're not using the features, consider keeping WLAN and BlueTooth OFF. Dont check mail automatically too often (and perhaps only in daytime) et cetera
The phone is charged through a standard micro-usb-plug. So should be easy to find alternative chargers.
Yep, thats the type. Standard Micro-sd(hc) ...alias transflash
The 8GB is build in mem, not a card. So YES a 16GBworks and is usefull, and supplements the 8Gb, giving you a total of 24Gb.
Plain files (Like photos, videos, mp3's) can be transfered e.g. by standard windows if connected in mass storage mode. Some apps (Like Ovi maps, needs to be told the prefered storage location in the app-settings)
And on the vibration, I dont think there is much hope on the extremely (close to useless) weak vibrator. I THINK it's due to a conventinal placement on a slim body.

  • N97 mini: questions on emails

    Hi all,
I have a few questions: what sort of email client does the N97 mini come with? Does it connect to email servers via IMAP idle? More specifically:
    1) if I delete an email from my Nokia, will it be deleted from the server, as well?
    2) when I send an email from my Nokia, is it possible to upload that email to the 'Sent' folder of my email server?
My email server supports POP, IMAP and IMAP idle - it's not an Exchange server.
With the E71, the only way I found to do the two things above was with Profimail, which is a great software but doesn't integrate in the home screen.
    Thanks!

    krizanand wrote:
    1. You have an option in the User settings of your mailbox on the phone, from your inbox > options > e-mail settings > User settings > E-mail deletion select Phone and server.
    2. It automatically refelects in the sent items folder of the mail server also its stored in the sent items on the phone.
Thanks a lot! So it seems there isn't much of a point in installing a third party email client like Profimail any more...
Can I ask a few more details, if you don't mind?
Does Nokia messaging work over wi fi, too? For example, if I connect to a wireless router, would emails work normally, like for the E71, for instance?
Does Nokia messaging connect via imap idle only? Or does Nokia send some sort of hidden sms to the phone when it receives an email, prompting it to connect to the server?
If I delete an email when there's no signal, it will be deleted from the server as soon as the phone picks up a signal again, right?

  • Some question from a new N97 owner

    Hi all,
So I just got my new N97. I have a few questions:
    - Configure home screen: So far I can add 2 shortcut bars (each can contain 4 application). I want to add more short cut bars, is there anyway? In the selection list when choosing the bar item to place on the home screen, there is no "shortcut 3" item.
    - Screen saver: So far my N97 locks key and screen becomes black and locked very fast (about 10 seconds) no matter how I try to change to settings. Actually there is nothing displayed (back screen) at all. And to wake up, I have to use the lock/unlock slide on the side. Is this normal? I can't touch the screen to wake it up? I got to Menu > Settings > Phones > play with settings there but no use. Do I need an application to have the screen saver feature? Is this a device flaw or do I have to change settings somewhere else?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Caten

hmm i have a n85 as well hence my response to you in regards to the screen saver. yes it shows those options but eventually it does go all black. unless i missed something with my phone. which is possible as i no longer use it as my primary device. the only option right now for you to customize home screen is to wait for n97 app MyPhone that hopefully will soon be released for your model. nokia phones have never nor will they ever behave in a iphonish fashion hence no possibility to set apps up as you would like. n97 is full of customizations just not exactly how you would like them to be who knows perhaps with future updates it will become even more flexible but for now its either that or waiting for MyPhone to be released. sorry.
ps. i am greatly surprised that n97 would not have a screen saver options at least similar to the n85 that worries me as i am also awaiting arrival of my brand new n97. so hearing all kinds of news makes me a bit concerned about this new phone. time will tell. sorry i dont have anymore news for you.

    Hello,
I just got my N97 and started using internet(for example OVI). I want my phone to connect to these things via WIFI. My question is; Is there a way for me to turn of my network so that it'll automaticly use WIFI for my internet?

Just to clear things up: I want my phone to stop connecting to the internet via my providers network and want it to connect via WIFI

Set your wifi to priority 1 in access points, or set the phone to offline mode and set up a wifi connection !

  • N97 - Several questions

    Hello !

Every where I can read V2 is  available but whan I connect my phone on NSU it said that I have V11.0.021 and no update available. Why? My phone is N97 (RM-505)
My last question is about calendar. How can I update it with birthdays on my contacts?
Thank you for your help !

Dano, your english is fine, I wish I could write in another language as well as you have.
Battery life does not seem to be a big problem with the N97 - this could be a hardware fault.
What is the Product Code of your phone - you will find it on a label under the battery 05xxxxxx.
The only way I know of adding birthdays, anniversarys etc and have them tied to the contact is by using Microsoft Outlook. - there will be other applications that will do it.
The phone itself wont do it, but Outlook will enter the data onto the outlook calender, then you synchronise your phone. If you need to change anything later, do it on outlook and sync.
Perhaps Nokia could add that feature to Contacts / Calender. I believe the Win Mobile devices have it.

  • N97 Video Questions

I want to convert some of my DVDs to play on my Nokia n97 and was looking for some advice.
Am I correct in believing that RealPlayer has access to Hardware decoding?
I currently own SmartMovie but playback is poor (very jerky) and the converter recently stopped working with a memory access violation.
I need to know if it is better to encode for the default player (realplayer) or to encode for SmartMovie and also which settings to use for each.  So far I have zero luck in converting files to play in RealPlayer (I have been using SmartMovie converter to convert to xvid using the avi container).
Any help appreciated - I am very disappointed with the lack of formats supported by the n97 it seems to make it very difficult to get decent video playback which is a shame since the device is supposed to play video well.

Hmmm I answered my own questions so I thought I would update here to advise people who might have similar questions.
My first piece of advice is -do not- spend money on 3rd party video players for your phone because they don't have access to hardware decoding so they are choppy.  The built in RealPlayer plays movies far far better than any of the alternative 3rd party apps out there.
Conversion is a piece of cake too.
Download MediaCoder (it is completely free and works as a GUI to several very mature Open Source tools) it is very easy to use.
    Under the Generic Tab:
    Set video format to MPEG4
    Set Mode to Bitrate-based
Set Bitrate to 1024kbps (gives very good quality and doesn't make the player struggle)
    Leave Source as MEncoder
    Set Encoder to FFmpeg
No need to change anything in the Audio Tab
    Under Container Tab:
    Set container to MP4
    Under Picture Tab:
Either use the 624x352 setting from the dropdown list (next to resize) -or- click the resize button and manually enter width 640 and height 360
They are the only settings I needed to play with and the conversions are very good and play in the realmedia player provided with the n97.
The conversion is also very fast (far quicker than SmartMovie Converter) I managed to convert a 1.6GB .avi xvid video in 37 minutes last night - SmartMovie Convertor would take almost 2 hours to do the same.
Once you have copied them over to your phone simply use the File Manager to go to the relevant directory and open the movie - realmedia player will open it and play it fine and no damn stuttering.
The above works flawlessly for me but your mileage may vary - you can play around with other settings if you like but just the simple settings above will produce excellent quality movies for your phone.

  • N97 photo Browser question

I've moved all the pics from ny N95's SD card to the mass storage in my N97.
I copied across the year/month file structure into the images/camera folder but when I first enter the photo browser app they all show up in a location called Download. That's not really a problem but what I'd like to find is the following:
How do I stop videos and movies etc showing up in the Photo Browser (I only want them shown in the Video and Movies browser) ?
    Thankyou
    Nokia 808
    Nokia CK-200

You can't do it, it's the annoying way the browser works. Two workarrounds are to set up the albums and view them instead of Downloads ( it doesn't take long to set up an album ) or use Nokia Photo Browser from beta labs and set to view by folder (which is my preference ) works really well
