N97 Touch Screen

I have an N97 and every day now the screen will stop responing to touch input. I think this is a hardware issue as i have always updated the firmware as soon as its released and I have the same problem no matter the firmware.
Resetting and turning off/on again doesnt solve it. Just have to lock the screen and rub my thumb over the entire screen and it seems to start working again.
Could part of the touch screen be getting stuck down?
Any body else have the same problem?
its my first nokia after having 10 years of sony ericsson's. can i get replacement touch screens anywhere?

  • N97 Touch Screen Problems

My N97 has intermittent touch screen problems where it will either respond in the wrong location, lag, or just be completely non-responsive. I'm pretty sure that it's not hardware as after completely rebuilding (remove all apps, format the mass memory, hard reset, re-install v2 fw, hard-reset, re-install apps, re-load mass memory) the phone and the touch screen work with no problems for several days, then after 3-4 days the problem reappears.
I suspect it's related to two problems with the phone: the first is that there is still a bug with the lock/unlock slider; the second is that the phone is too underpowered (CPU & RAM) to multi-task (especially email retrieval) and process the input of the touch screen.
Is anybody else having similar problems with their N97 touch screen, if so do you have a solution?

    @froschy:
My observations are 100% consistent with yours. The packet data end does solve the problem, but only if the screen is not 100% non-responsive. I can also confirm that the WiFi status has absolutely no effect on the problem.
There are also quite a bit of other possible causes that can be ruled out from the get-go:
    1. Insufficient RAM or CPU in general activity. I can rule this out as the phone works well even if I have 12 applications open at the same time. However, the issues happen sometimes even if nothing is running in the background. If this issue is related to memory leaks or similar bugs, it has nothing to do with the ones I normally run and has to be something in the background (like contacts, phone or messaging, clock, maybe others?) that is cuasing this.
Also, even when the screen is not responding correctly, I can still do stuff on the phone without lag. This is really weird but very true. I can do pretty much anything as long as I use the slide-keyboard instead of the touchscreen.
    2. The 3G network is not to blame. I live in Romania and I use Vodafone, which has 3.5G (3G+, HSDPA or whatever you want to call it) and is a very well established technology for these guys (they use it since 2005 I believe and have great coverage for it). The fact that you and me both have the same issues pretty much points to no influence on the provider or network type, IMO.
    3. The screen is not faulty. I hope. All pointers rule this out, but really, you never know in the end :-D
    4. The firmware version seems to be irrelevant up to this point. I have been having this problem since v11 and now I'm running v20. If this will be fixed in the future, I have no idea. However, if it gets fixed, we will know.
    =========
At this point I can also identify some key points about the phone usage which are common to both you and myself:
    1. We use the GPRS / 3G connection on a regular basis.
    2. We use the mobile email client to check email on a regular basis. For my part, I use MailForExchange and keep it in sync pretty much all day long. Though, at work, I use WiFi instead of GSM connection.
Maybe these two points are of importance. On the other hand, maybe there is something else that may be common to both our phones. I have an N97 RM-505, FW version  20.0.019.C01.01 (firmware is not really relevant anyway).
    Cheers,
    C.

  • N97 Touch Screen Not Working

My nokia n97 mini screen is not working neither are the call answer buttons.
The problem is exactly the same as in this video (not my video btw) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_nf3sFX9eg
I've tried replacing the LCD screen with no luck.
I also tried doing a hard reset by pressing the appropiate buttons. (shift + space + BACKSPACE + POWER ON)
When I did the reset it asked for region select etc but all apps, photos etc. were still there so it did not format the drive.
    Any ideas?

  • N97 Touch Screen Issues

I've had my N97 for a year now, and I have another 6 months to go on my contract with T-Mobile before I can upgrade. It can't come soon enough, as far as I'm concerned. It's been a big disappointment and frustration for all the reasons other users have listed on here, particularly the slide switch falling off despite my having taken great care of the phone.
Now the touchscreen seems to be failing. This may or may not have something to do with the ignorant cow who dropped a whole pint of lager on it in a pub beer garden the other week, simply handing me my soaked phone with no word of an apology and walking off. I dried it thoroughly right away, and there didn't seem to be any damage. It continued working normally. The next day, though, the touchscreen kept intermittently coming to life (in the way it normally would when you press the menu button), accompanied by random vibrations. The menu button wasn't responding when I pressed it. Flipping the keyboard out and back again seemed to return things to normal and the menu key worked again, but it's been doing it intermittently ever since. Some days it behaves itself, other days it keeps flashing on, then off again, then back on a few moments later. It's doing it right now as I type this. Very annoying.
Now, does anyone have any ideas as to how I can stop it doing this that don't involve either smashing it to pieces in frustration or spending a small fortune on getting it repaired? I'm worried that if I go into a Nokia shop and demand a replacement (probably wise to leave out the bit about the silly bint dropping the pint on it), they'll simply fob me off with some guff about warranties and expect me to pay an exorbitant repair fee. What are the chances of me going to a Nokia shp, requesting a replacement phone and them actually giving me one? Probably not great, but it's worth asking.

If helps, the firmware v21 was bad for my N97 too. If it's not a liquid damage you can try to install v.22 and see if it works. Do a hard reset and format the mass storage before install and do another hard reset after install. And do not restore anything except your contacts. Then you manually adjust the settings. Don't install any app on phone memory and try no to install lots of apps neither on mass storage (be careful with the memory resident ones). And use a light theme, if you want to change the default one. This is the way i finally get an usable phone. I hope you work it out!

  • N97 mini Hang-up, sudden reboots, touch screen non...

Malfunctioning started 5-6 months after purchase.
At first few times no any possibility to answer a call - sliding on screen when keys locked or touching answer screen button, or green button after display/key unlock did not worked.
Only possibility to talk with caller - call back immediately (it works) an excuse for that problem.
Lately phone started to reboot after ending calls or after (or while) using as internet connection modem. Or sometimes rebooted by itself just standing by on table...
Sometimes keyboard does not work, working only screen.
Then become next problem - or touch-screen does not respond or respond awkward or totally different as should.
Then touch-screen malfunction together with keyboard not functioning.
After a month spent at sellers repair first 3 days - everything worked as should. I started to believe - problems gone, but that happiness was only for three days..
Question - is this model is most buggy faulty or so? Nearly 400 EUR for top series N class disaster is quite a big money... How nokia thinks to solve this problem? As I understood I'm not the one and only with that big list of problems for 400 EUR...
    Nokia 1611, 2210, 3110, 5110, 6210, 6310, 6310i (up to these models totally satisfied)
Then don't remember model, then E50 (mostly happy), then N97 mini - phone with briliant keyboard, but poor touchscreen, then business phone E07, phone that can not make a photo of contract, invoice or business card. poor design of usb port and 5 months at service did it - my nowadays phone is Apple. Company gave me Asha 300, so frustrating, that I use my old E50 instead...

Yesterday evening I gave back my faulty item to repair center. They said that, previously service center most likely couldn't find the cause of problem and just renewed the firmware.
Strangely - Yesterday morning talk with Nokia Customer care center figured out, that there were NO ANY registered repair or update action made by authorized service (and must be  registered). May be nothing was done or service center is not so "official".
Thank Good, yesterday the phone showed up the malfunction and guy said - most likely it is resistive touch sensor problem that should be replaced, because it after some time wears out or is tended to bend or so - so it becomes malfunctioning and should be replaced...
Strange - if the phone costs ~400 EUR the touch-screen sensor should be more wear-tear, bend or any problem resistant to average phone use conditions. To face this problem every 3 to 9 months - doesn't seams to be fair offer for that price...
Today I was promised to have a call from service - within what time phone will be back to me at working order... Still waiting.
    Nokia 1611, 2210, 3110, 5110, 6210, 6310, 6310i (up to these models totally satisfied)

  • N97 (White unbranded) - Touch Screen Issues

    Hi,
I had purchased N97 white from Nokia Flagship store few months back. From the last month or so i am seen my mobile's touch screen at times freezes and then on its own works after some time. This problem lasts for few seconds to few minutes and really make the phone dead like i can not receive the call using the touch screen or green button.
I have visted flagship store many times and booked it also but unfortunately nokia care people have been flashing the software and saying that it works. Unfortunately it does not look to be a software problem. I now have again booked it and have asked for the replacement.
Has anybody else faced the similar problem ? Does anyone know what's the likelihood of i getting the replacement and what's the turn around time from nokia.
    Thanks.
    Sandeep

i doubt that they will replace your device if it has been more then 30 days since you bought it. they might fix it for you by swapping some components if indeed this is a hardware issue. here in the US because i have to send out the phone to another state to get it fixed it may take several weeks to get the phone back. it all depends on where you live and if you have a care center by you.
You know what I love about you the most, the fact that you are not me ! In love with technology and all that it can offer. Join me in discovery....

  • Possible N97 solution (Screen freeze)

To start with, I have to admit I've never been an active member of these boards. Only when I got this phone back in August, shortly after release, did I turn here to see if someone else shared my problem.
The N97 I have now is actually my second, the original I bought completely froze up on me after about 2 days and I returned it directly to the store and tore them a new hole until they gave me a completely different phone (still boxed). Despite having some quite major issues, with the second phone, it has never completely frozen up on me but has at times been inoperable for extended periods. The main issues have all been related with the touch screen interface, but since everyone here shares these problems I'm not going to bore you with my tears and the details. To put it in short, I love the phone but was just about to file a full reclamation letter with the supplier and stop using Nokia for good. Until I fixed it by accident.
As I type this my phone has been operating 100% incident free for just about 2 weeks now. Strange enough it's all because I changed the screen protector from that which came packaged with the phone!!!
I'm still in disbelief that something as simple as this could correct one of the most irratating problems I have ever had with a piece of technology. The screen protector was purchased in a Finnish computer store called Verkkokauppa.com, I'll give the links here:
    http://www.verkkokauppa.com/popups/prodinfo.php?id=31484
    Google translation:
    http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=1&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww...
At best I can tell, the screen protector I have placed now is just slightly thicker than that which came with the phone originally. Since I lack the engineering knowledge to explain how and why this could help, I can only suppose that it has something to do with the screen being activated by accident while in my pocket before, but now because of the thicker material this has stopped. I was aware before that the phone had it's lagging issues while either on the move of in contact with some materials, but all that is in the past!
I would love to hear some someone else to know if anyone this is actually a fix or if it's just fluk with mine right now. I made no software changes and I'm running the most upto date versions.

Happy it works for you, but I can't ever imagine that a screenprotector should be the cause of issues with the device...

  • Irregular N97 Mini screen issue?

I have had my N97 Mini for nearly two years. In that time, it has been a fairly trouble-free device. A few times it has seized, had some issues, and about 18 months ago the touch screen stopped working -- but it was repaired, and I have had no issues since. Until now.
About a week ago, my phone's screen started behaving oddly. I can't really describe it -- the display would overwhelm with static, it would distort irregularly... to describe the visuals, it looked a lot like interference. Flashes of green, things like that. I could, at times, see my homescreen background. But it would disappear as quickly as it came.
Even now, it is still responsive; the phone charges, responds to USB connection, and when I swipe the screen I can feel the vibrations of my homescreen content. When I flip it out, the keys still light up. Everything works fine.
I have not dropped my phone.
About a week or so prior to these complications, it was raining; a couple of droplets go on the screen but I cleaned them away. As far as I know, the phone was relatively dry; though if it was water damage, would it have responded sooner than a week after the phone was touched by water?
I honestly don't know what its problem is, how to fix it, what to do. Any suggestions or likely causes?

Suggest you to back-up your important data as soon as possible (if not yet done...) before something drastic happens. The effects of water damaged can be immediate to over a period of few monts, depending on how much water has gone inside and what parts were directly affected ... Get the phone inspected at Nokia care if you want but preferably opt for a new phone ...

  • 5800 - V40 - Cannot answer call using touch screen

    Hi,
Just upgraded to V40 on my 5800. Now when the phone rings I get 2 options on the touch screen:
    1. Answer
    2. Unlock
Neither work. I know I can use the buttons, but why have the other options on the screen if they don't work. What about the other options like silence or reject, or send message. All gone.
    The new version is **bleep**.
Also, when I set an alarm, I can't silence it, or stop it using the touch screen.
This all seems to happen when the phone is locked, but if the phone is unlocked, I get the older options.
I don't know how I'm expected to unlock my phone just before someone rings me to enable me to have all the existing options, or wake up before my alarm in order to unlock the phone, so I can snooze or stop it.
Can something be done, or can I revert back to V31??
    Thanks,
    DOS.

they aren't buttons , they are ARROWS. don't tap to answer or silence the alarm , just swipe your finger in the same direction of movements to answer or snooze or .... etc

  • E7 Touch Screen - How to reduce sensitivity

Hi, just got a E7 last week.  Great phone for my needs but I find the touch screen a little too sensitive that a slight brush would activate e.g the call dial pad or the options menu in the home screen. This usually happens when I try one handed operations as I try to stretch my thumb across the screen.
Does anyone know where & how to reduce the sensitivity of the touch screen so that it will only register a touch when I deliberately touch it?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Cheers.

I came from an N97 to the E7 and also found it extremely sensitive, however , after a couple of weeks , once you realise you only need a light touch the phone is fantastic, and if you try some of the Android phones, the reaction is similar. The main issue Nokia have had with touchscreens is people criticising there lack of sensitivity and speed, the E7 is on par with most modern touchscreen phones, give it a while and you'll love it

  • E7 Touch screen gets stuck

E7 would need a mechanical call disconnection button (could be programmed e.g. for on/off-button??), as the touch screen every now and then gets stuck and you're not able for example to end the call. Especially when you don't want to leave a message to a voice mail and the phone just keeps on going there's gonna be several f-words in the voice mail.......
    This is really irritating!

After installing the newer phoneware from version 013.XXX to version 014.002 there is an not understandable phone reaction to end the call.
Pressing on screen end call vibrates, but still shows on screen. Why - pressing few times activates some screen apps that appear after really ending a call. And it acts faster than auto key lock locks the screen and finishes to show "end call" button...

  • N97 unlock screen probs?????

when i first got my n97 was great but after a couple of weeks developed a problem. the problem is i can switch the phone on and everything is ok but if i lock it and leave it of bout 15 mins or so i unlock but touch screen is inactive and wont work but other times its ok. Is this a common fault?
I have the phone on contract on 3 and they want me to send in for repair but not convinced they can fix untill new software comes out which i can do myself. Is this a common fault?
    any help greatfull
    cheers

Try deleting all your mailboxes and internet access points, and nokia messaging if it's installed. Remove sim and battery, reboot phone without sim, allow to fully boot up. Then re-insert sim and set up a mailbox in the standard email client, hopefully this will work.
Or try profimail, though you shouldn't have to !
    Good Luck

  • N97 White Screen .. Phone wont boot at all ... Stu...

    Hello all,
So I have finally stumbled upon the White Screen of Death ... Really sad that it happened but I still have hope that it may work. THe phone does not boot up and its stuck on the Nokia logo
    [Long read]
It happened one before a day and I managed to find a helpful topic
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=141381
It had everything regarding reset codes and whatnot, but the really helpful message was from grschinon .. ( he seems to know what hes doing ) .. for he shared an amazing technique of holding the green and red buttons while booting up the phone, and it worked !!
But yesterday, it happened again  .. The screen wont light up and the keylock was stuck, so I just removed the battery ... I turned it on while assuming that the red/green button technique will work, but it didnt
I tried it over and over again ( been trying for half a day actually ) .. but with no avail, it didnt work ..
I tried connecting it through usb, with the wall charger, different combinations of buttons ... meh none worked
Its really annoying that half of my friends keep saying, THIS is why you get a blackberry .. and similar stuff .. My previous phones are all Nokia and this is just a huge dissapointment .. the N95 is 500000 times better than the N97 in stability and etc ... I was anxiously waiting for v2.0  ... now my n97 is dead
     [/Long read]
I understand that there is a solution that will FORMAT the whole phone, but I dont want that, there are lots of pictures on my internal memorycard (32gb one) and 30+ applications (if not more) .. I seriously dont want to lose all of those ..
So do you know any other way that I can fix the problem ?? Is there a soft reset combination that i can use rather than the hard reset one??
Please advise, your comments are really appreciated,
    Kind Regards,
    Z

These are the solutions that i've colected over the internet:
    I hope it help's you!
N97 White Screen .. Phone wont boot at all ... Stuck at Nokia logo
They instructed me to turn on the phone pressing the green, red and camera button at the same time as I pressed the power button.
It worked and the phone started.
I didn't need to format my phone.
Had the same problem with my White N97 (not that the colour probably makes a difference).
Was using the Facebook App on the main screen as a widget, tried to start it up by touching it - it seemed to not start even after waiting or trying multiple times.
So i thought to myself, "I'll just reboot my phone, that should fix it."
    BAD IDEA.
Got stuck on the White Screen with the Blue "NOKIA" on it, so i thought...i'll wait and see what happens.
    Nothing...for hours.
So i pulled the battery and put it back in again....powered on....same thing..."NOKIA"...and nothing else.
Repeated this about....10 times, getting more and more nervous that i had turned my $950AU phone that i had boasted to my friends that is better than their iphones....into a useless brick.
So, i turned to Google looking for answers...
Someone said they left the battery out of the phone until it went flat and had some success.
I found something about other users having a similar issue with other software  (Garmin GPS software), and also the "Mail for Exchange" application.
They mentioned something about the only way to get it working again was to hard reset the phone to stop the apps from going online...
I REALLY didnt want to do a hard reset, as i had a bunch of apps and data that i DID NOT want to lose or spend like 3-4hours re-installing.
SO...I got thinking...how can i stop my apps from trying to go online without a hard reset.
So this is what i tried - and it worked!
1- Power off phone (if power button responds)
    2- Pull out battery.
3- Remove memory card (if you have one)
    4- Remove SIM card.
5- To make sure phone has no residule power hold down power button without any of the above inserted.
6- Re-insert battery only (without SIM card or Memory Card)
7- Cross your fingers and toes. (optional...but if it helps what the hell.)
    8- Power on phone.
9- IF the phone prompts you to go online in any way Select NO. (or if it says do you want to activate Offline mode say YES)
10- Press Options key when you get to the home screen and select "Content to offline mode"
11-  Make sure "Offline" is displayed in top left corner near where the signal bar usually is. ( if it doesnt say "Offline" press the power button briefly, and select "Offline" (should be underneath the "Pager" profile)
12- Once you have made sure your phone and applications are in offline mode - Power off phone using Power button.
    13- Remove battery
14-  Again to make sure phone has no residule power hold down power button without any battery or cards inserted.
15- Re-Insert SIM card, Memory card and Battery.
    16- Power on Phone.
At this point the phone should start up as per normal, I knew it was working straight away for me because my SIM card prompted me for a pin number. (which happens normally for me when I turn on my phone)
After the phone is ready, i just put my phone back into online mode by selecting my "general" profile, and put my content back online.
Please note: This is what worked for me. Results and Mileage may vary.
It seems the issue is that the phone startup is being held up or stopped due to Programs or Applications tring to go online.
For me I suspect it could have been the Facebook App due to the problems i had before powering off my phone the first time.
I am going to put my Content to offline mode if I need to reboot my phone again, at least until nokia pull up their socks and release a fix for this.
Side note: my N97 is also running Version 11 Firmware. ( not that it may make a difference)
Good luck to all with same problem, hope this works for you too.
Had the same problem but I just removed the extra memorycard and formatted it on my computer before I put it back...
after a few days trying without micro sd inserted
the result is, n97 still stuck in white screen nokia logo
it happend always if i turn off my phone without sign off the facebook app widggetz..
here is how to crash your phone
put facebook widgetz on nokia standby screeen
and then put it online mode
    klik the facebook app
just do anything in your facebook for check it already connected
    klik end key
now turn off your phone without sign out the Facebook
    turn on again
and boom your phone will stuck on nokia white screen logo
and it will never boot forever..
sometime when you take off the batery and reinserted again it can boot normaly but the percentage is 20% only..
soo if your n97 can boot normaly after FB "accident" that mean you lucky and i sugest you unistall your FB ASAP before n97 stuck again on white screen nokia logo..
is anyone have problem like mee??
i like to hear another opinion...
i think nokia already knew this problem, that way when you check ovi and your phone set to nokia n97 the facebook app is missing...
    my firmware is v11 already
