N97 Video

1) Has anyone taken a large .MPG file (recorded from freeview) and converted it to play on an N97.
I would be interested in knowing what s/w is best to do this, and most importantly whether the end result plays well on the buggy N97. Is it worth the trouble ?
2) I notice with iPlayer videos, the display breaks up very quickly and is blocky. I assume everyones is like this ?
THanks
N97 Firmware Version 20

I'm using Nidesoft Nokia converter. Works excellent, and the videos play just fine on the device. I really appreciate the resolution of the N97, and converting videos using the right reslution really shows the superiority of the display compared to other devices, such as the iPhone...
However, I've had some problems with the Nidesoft DVD converter. So I can't recomment that one.

  • N97 video/photo folder

Nokia have always kinda confused me with the way they change the media folders in their phones. i had the 6120 which had videos and photos separately, then the n95-8gb which had them all in the same place but you could make new folders for them. The 5800 had them separated again, and now the n97 has 'photos' for both, but with the option of making folders. Good. But, apparently 'videos and tv' doesn't have the option. is this correct or have i just missed a trick somewhere? I find it hard to swallow that nokia accept we want to categorise photos, but not videos. And if they suggest we just make video folders in the photos section, why have a videos section at all?
Also, when i transferred my photos from my old phone to the n97 they went to the photo 'downloads' section. I've now moved them into separate folders but they remain in downloads. Is there a way to empty the download folder without wiping all the photos?

Try using the User Search, there are several threads on this subject already.

  • N97 Video camera captures Blurred (Un-Focused) Vid...

    Hello,
I have recently found out that my phone cant focus at all .. Using image mod, the camera manages to auto-focus and the images are amazing, but when it comes to video, its blurred !!
For example, if I hold the camera 25cm above a paper, it wont pick up any words, it will only capture black lines
The sentences are all blurred out.
If I take a video footage of a friend that is 1m away, the details are better BUT are still blurred
Now the N97 has 5mega pixels and the N95 has 5mp as well, but my N95 captures sharp videos
Can someone tell me how can I fix this issue ????
    Kind Regards,
    Z

    Added to the above :
I have also noticed that when video recording, the audio keeps changing its volume !!! For example : I stand 2m away from the phone while its recording, and make a contineuous sound, the sound's volume increases and then suddenly dicreases so much that I can barely hear it
After that, the volume increases again and the loop is reset.
WHYYYY is that happening ? Is it a hardware error ? or is it a software problem ?
I have installed v2.0 after a hard-reset today hoping that it will fix it..but it didnt
    Please help !!!!!

  • N97 Video Questions

I want to convert some of my DVDs to play on my Nokia n97 and was looking for some advice.
Am I correct in believing that RealPlayer has access to Hardware decoding?
I currently own SmartMovie but playback is poor (very jerky) and the converter recently stopped working with a memory access violation.
I need to know if it is better to encode for the default player (realplayer) or to encode for SmartMovie and also which settings to use for each.  So far I have zero luck in converting files to play in RealPlayer (I have been using SmartMovie converter to convert to xvid using the avi container).
Any help appreciated - I am very disappointed with the lack of formats supported by the n97 it seems to make it very difficult to get decent video playback which is a shame since the device is supposed to play video well.

Hmmm I answered my own questions so I thought I would update here to advise people who might have similar questions.
My first piece of advice is -do not- spend money on 3rd party video players for your phone because they don't have access to hardware decoding so they are choppy.  The built in RealPlayer plays movies far far better than any of the alternative 3rd party apps out there.
Conversion is a piece of cake too.
Download MediaCoder (it is completely free and works as a GUI to several very mature Open Source tools) it is very easy to use.
    Under the Generic Tab:
    Set video format to MPEG4
    Set Mode to Bitrate-based
Set Bitrate to 1024kbps (gives very good quality and doesn't make the player struggle)
    Leave Source as MEncoder
    Set Encoder to FFmpeg
No need to change anything in the Audio Tab
    Under Container Tab:
    Set container to MP4
    Under Picture Tab:
Either use the 624x352 setting from the dropdown list (next to resize) -or- click the resize button and manually enter width 640 and height 360
They are the only settings I needed to play with and the conversions are very good and play in the realmedia player provided with the n97.
The conversion is also very fast (far quicker than SmartMovie Converter) I managed to convert a 1.6GB .avi xvid video in 37 minutes last night - SmartMovie Convertor would take almost 2 hours to do the same.
Once you have copied them over to your phone simply use the File Manager to go to the relevant directory and open the movie - realmedia player will open it and play it fine and no damn stuttering.
The above works flawlessly for me but your mileage may vary - you can play around with other settings if you like but just the simple settings above will produce excellent quality movies for your phone.

Does this camera webpage you view on computers use a Flash Video player?
If so then there will be issues displaying Flash contect as phones use Flash lite, not full Flash like you get on PC's, this is why you have a dedicated Youtube app.  This should hopefully be changing soon from what I have read from the Adobe news site
Maybe contact the manufacture of the cameras/web page to see if they are going to develop anything for mobiles/Symbian o/s

  • N97 Video playback problem

I am having probems with the video player. I tried converting some avi files to mp4 using Super and with most options I use, when I try to play on the phone it says "anable to play sound or video" so it only plays the sound! Has anyone else experienced this?

  • N97 Video Editing

    Hi everyone,
I have an N97 mini, and wanted to know if there was a video editing software for it, on which I could cut a clip, merge 2 clips, add sounds, effects etc.
Are there any third party applications for this? If not, how do I access the preinstalled nokia editor?
    Thanks!
    Sasch

To say the N97 has NO options for video editing is a bit misleading.
It has the following video editing features:
    Merge
    Change Sound
    Add text
    Cut
So it does have some very basic features.

  • N97 video streaming stutters often

When I watch a streaming video over WiFi it often happens that after some time of playing the playing stops and the N97 says "xyz% buffering". Sometimes it takes a few seconds and the stream continues, sometimes I can wait ages and nothing happens. My Wifi is okay, fast enough. I wonder, can i something tune on the n97 settings to get a more fluent video streaming playback?

  • N97 Video recorder...your kidding ...right...

OMG are you serious, the video recorder on the N97 sometimes freezes and its not focused...Everything is blurred!!! and theres no point zooming in because you can bearly see anything!!!!
    n97.

I don't see how a Windows Defrag will solve the problem as:
    1. its not a hard drive. flash doesn't have this issue as there are no moving heads.
[Wrong, even though there's no moving heads, it still has to butterfly seek to get the data off if heavily fragmented slowing it down]
    2. the phone its self does not use a windows os so it wouldn't make any odds to it if it was fragmented from a windows point of view
[what's windows got to do with it?  it's a FAT 32 drive, your harddrive can use FAT32/NTFS or any other kind of partition]
    3. symbian manages files differently.
[It still has to read/write, the more jumps and seeks it has to do the slower it's going to read data due to the slow CPU in the N97, more seeks more work slower things become]
I never said it would fix it, i said it's worth a try as it MIGHT fix it if it's heavily fragmented, constantly adding, deleting
    files, music, videos....

  • N97 Video Quality

Every video I watch on the N97 looks pretty bad.  The resolution is terrible, fuzzy, and all around **bleep**.  When I watch the same video on a blackberry or iPhone, the video looks decent.  This surprises me because every review I read about the N97 all talk about the clarity and great resolution of the phone.  Does anyone else think their N97 displays bad quality video or is it just my phone?

Guys, I've tried the following free softwares for Video conversion & they worked fine on my N97. They provide high quality conversions. As you know, higher quality = bigger size. It also depends on the video quality of the source file. Check them out:
http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ you can download the free video converter, or the whole studio for audio/video editing & conversion.
http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ Any Video Converter. This is really a useful & easy-to-use program with many options. Its speed is stunning...
By they way, I tried the Nokia Video Manager (NVM) v1.8 that comes with PC suite & it always gives me error message on Vista that it's not responding & it needs to shut down & restart!!! Any idea??

  • Nokia n97 videos won't play!!!

Whenever i try playin videos on my n97 the don't play. It just says trying to play partially and plays only the sound and no images??

I`m having the same problems and more. It wont play video no matter what i encode it to. Whats the point of a phone that plays high def video but wont actually play high def video, nokia? Most down load films theses days are encoded in dvix ect so might it be a good idea to design your poxy flagship phone to play it.
People dont want to mess about converting stuff just to find you can only listern to it. People just want to upload a movie and have done with it!
The one time i have manage to convert a DVD that will play on my (cough) device i found the quality very poor.
Oh and the software that comes with the phone? Was that meant as a joke, nokia? Everytime i open the app on two of my three pc`s it crashes. I cant sync music with it, it takes ages to upload stuff onto your phone and your lucky if it plays.
The phone its self stinks! Its touch screen is slow and imprecise. Apps are slow to open, the screen scratches as soon as you get it out the box.
Honestly, i`m bitterly disapointed with my N97. I`m stuck with the poxy thing on a 18 month contract but i will probaly lob it up the wall before that time!
Sorry Nokia for this rant but i wish i had gone with the iphone instead.
    The N97 is trash
