N97 White Discolouration

Hiya,
I want to buy a Nokia N97, And well I can't decide if I want the white or the black edition of it. I think I want the White one but that is not 100% Sure.
The thing that kinda holds me back from getting the white one is that I'm afraid it will lose its colour.
i want to know if anybody had any experience with a Nokia before where they would suffer from Discolouration or someone with a N97 who already had this?
I would just hate it if there were any stains oir that it would get a bit yellow.
Does someone also know if this would happen how long it will take before it happens?
Thanks in advance!!

It's mostly just the buttons on the keyboard that discolour, not the actual casing.
If you google you will see that some people already have had problems, but obviously we don't know how careful they were.  The same usually applies to most products that use white rubber buttons.
After holding both colours I would say that the black one looks and feels like a higher quality product than the white, but thats just my personal opinion.

  • N97 (White unbranded) - Touch Screen Issues

    Hi,
I had purchased N97 white from Nokia Flagship store few months back. From the last month or so i am seen my mobile's touch screen at times freezes and then on its own works after some time. This problem lasts for few seconds to few minutes and really make the phone dead like i can not receive the call using the touch screen or green button.
I have visted flagship store many times and booked it also but unfortunately nokia care people have been flashing the software and saying that it works. Unfortunately it does not look to be a software problem. I now have again booked it and have asked for the replacement.
Has anybody else faced the similar problem ? Does anyone know what's the likelihood of i getting the replacement and what's the turn around time from nokia.
    Thanks.
    Sandeep

i doubt that they will replace your device if it has been more then 30 days since you bought it. they might fix it for you by swapping some components if indeed this is a hardware issue. here in the US because i have to send out the phone to another state to get it fixed it may take several weeks to get the phone back. it all depends on where you live and if you have a care center by you.

  • N97 White Screen .. Phone wont boot at all ... Stu...

    Hello all,
So I have finally stumbled upon the White Screen of Death ... Really sad that it happened but I still have hope that it may work. THe phone does not boot up and its stuck on the Nokia logo
    [Long read]
It happened one before a day and I managed to find a helpful topic
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=smartphones&thread.id=141381
It had everything regarding reset codes and whatnot, but the really helpful message was from grschinon .. ( he seems to know what hes doing ) .. for he shared an amazing technique of holding the green and red buttons while booting up the phone, and it worked !!
But yesterday, it happened again  .. The screen wont light up and the keylock was stuck, so I just removed the battery ... I turned it on while assuming that the red/green button technique will work, but it didnt
I tried it over and over again ( been trying for half a day actually ) .. but with no avail, it didnt work ..
I tried connecting it through usb, with the wall charger, different combinations of buttons ... meh none worked
Its really annoying that half of my friends keep saying, THIS is why you get a blackberry .. and similar stuff .. My previous phones are all Nokia and this is just a huge dissapointment .. the N95 is 500000 times better than the N97 in stability and etc ... I was anxiously waiting for v2.0  ... now my n97 is dead
     [/Long read]
I understand that there is a solution that will FORMAT the whole phone, but I dont want that, there are lots of pictures on my internal memorycard (32gb one) and 30+ applications (if not more) .. I seriously dont want to lose all of those ..
So do you know any other way that I can fix the problem ?? Is there a soft reset combination that i can use rather than the hard reset one??
Please advise, your comments are really appreciated,
    Kind Regards,
    Z

These are the solutions that i've colected over the internet:
    I hope it help's you!
N97 White Screen .. Phone wont boot at all ... Stuck at Nokia logo
They instructed me to turn on the phone pressing the green, red and camera button at the same time as I pressed the power button.
It worked and the phone started.
I didn't need to format my phone.
Had the same problem with my White N97 (not that the colour probably makes a difference).
Was using the Facebook App on the main screen as a widget, tried to start it up by touching it - it seemed to not start even after waiting or trying multiple times.
So i thought to myself, "I'll just reboot my phone, that should fix it."
    BAD IDEA.
Got stuck on the White Screen with the Blue "NOKIA" on it, so i thought...i'll wait and see what happens.
    Nothing...for hours.
So i pulled the battery and put it back in again....powered on....same thing..."NOKIA"...and nothing else.
Repeated this about....10 times, getting more and more nervous that i had turned my $950AU phone that i had boasted to my friends that is better than their iphones....into a useless brick.
So, i turned to Google looking for answers...
Someone said they left the battery out of the phone until it went flat and had some success.
I found something about other users having a similar issue with other software  (Garmin GPS software), and also the "Mail for Exchange" application.
They mentioned something about the only way to get it working again was to hard reset the phone to stop the apps from going online...
I REALLY didnt want to do a hard reset, as i had a bunch of apps and data that i DID NOT want to lose or spend like 3-4hours re-installing.
SO...I got thinking...how can i stop my apps from trying to go online without a hard reset.
So this is what i tried - and it worked!
1- Power off phone (if power button responds)
    2- Pull out battery.
3- Remove memory card (if you have one)
    4- Remove SIM card.
5- To make sure phone has no residule power hold down power button without any of the above inserted.
6- Re-insert battery only (without SIM card or Memory Card)
7- Cross your fingers and toes. (optional...but if it helps what the hell.)
    8- Power on phone.
9- IF the phone prompts you to go online in any way Select NO. (or if it says do you want to activate Offline mode say YES)
10- Press Options key when you get to the home screen and select "Content to offline mode"
11-  Make sure "Offline" is displayed in top left corner near where the signal bar usually is. ( if it doesnt say "Offline" press the power button briefly, and select "Offline" (should be underneath the "Pager" profile)
12- Once you have made sure your phone and applications are in offline mode - Power off phone using Power button.
    13- Remove battery
14-  Again to make sure phone has no residule power hold down power button without any battery or cards inserted.
15- Re-Insert SIM card, Memory card and Battery.
    16- Power on Phone.
At this point the phone should start up as per normal, I knew it was working straight away for me because my SIM card prompted me for a pin number. (which happens normally for me when I turn on my phone)
After the phone is ready, i just put my phone back into online mode by selecting my "general" profile, and put my content back online.
Please note: This is what worked for me. Results and Mileage may vary.
It seems the issue is that the phone startup is being held up or stopped due to Programs or Applications tring to go online.
For me I suspect it could have been the Facebook App due to the problems i had before powering off my phone the first time.
I am going to put my Content to offline mode if I need to reboot my phone again, at least until nokia pull up their socks and release a fix for this.
Side note: my N97 is also running Version 11 Firmware. ( not that it may make a difference)
Good luck to all with same problem, hope this works for you too.
Had the same problem but I just removed the extra memorycard and formatted it on my computer before I put it back...
after a few days trying without micro sd inserted
the result is, n97 still stuck in white screen nokia logo
it happend always if i turn off my phone without sign off the facebook app widggetz..
here is how to crash your phone
put facebook widgetz on nokia standby screeen
and then put it online mode
    klik the facebook app
just do anything in your facebook for check it already connected
    klik end key
now turn off your phone without sign out the Facebook
    turn on again
and boom your phone will stuck on nokia white screen logo
and it will never boot forever..
sometime when you take off the batery and reinserted again it can boot normaly but the percentage is 20% only..
soo if your n97 can boot normaly after FB "accident" that mean you lucky and i sugest you unistall your FB ASAP before n97 stuck again on white screen nokia logo..
is anyone have problem like mee??
i like to hear another opinion...
i think nokia already knew this problem, that way when you check ovi and your phone set to nokia n97 the facebook app is missing...
    my firmware is v11 already

  • N97 White screen of death (WSOD) with FW V11.0.21

I have my nokia N97 almost a week now. This morning opera mini froze and I couldn't turn it off so I removed the battery. After reinserting the battery and turned the phone on I got the White screen of death (WSOD), just a white screen with the word nokia on it. I tried to boot it without the simcard and also waiting 30+ minutes before reinserting the battery. But I still have de WSOD...
Do I have to keep it on to drain the battery or are there other methods to fix this problem. I don't feel like sending it to Nokia because I have to wait more than 2 weeks before it's fixed...
The past 2 weeks I have used it intensively, installed a lot of apps. Put 300+ songs on it and and some movies. I had the email widget on the home screen, I heard that's one of the problem on other forums...
Any ideas how I can boot up normally....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    WSOD
    Hard Reset
    The combination is:
Shift + Space bar + Backspace + Power your phone
    Instructions to bypass WSOD:
All you need is: Methodology 1 as posted by some other user
    N97
    Charger
    Follow these steps:
    Turn off your phone.
    Insert charger.
Remove charger right after screen lights up.
Wait a couple of seconds till screen turns off and just after that press power button.
After standart vibration notification just put your charger in.
VOILA! You can insert your PIN again!
I am using this method for almost a month and it seems that this is only one way to boot up my N97.
It would be nice to hear if this method works for you
Anyway, I have found a solution, that works for me everytime the WSOD comes up. It goes like this when WSOD keeps coming up:
    Instructions to bypass WSOD:
All you need is: Methodology 1 as posted by some other user
    1. Pull battery and re-insert it.
    2. Power up the phone by holding the "Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" and wait 30 seconds or so.
    3. After the wait the phone should come up normally asking for the SIM passcode and everything is fine.
"Power button + RED key + GREEN key + Camera key" is a sort of "soft reset", it keeps all the installations and everything as opposed to the "hard reset".
Hope this helps, and let's all hope that Nokia QA start testing their smartphone software with a little more care. I cannot imagine that normal people would live with such blatant bugs.
    My solution to yesterday experience
    What I have done:
    1. Switch Off Nokia N97 by pulling out the battery
    2. Pull out the SIM CARD and Memory Card
    3. Switch on The Nokia N97 without SIM AND MEMORY CARD
    4. Then do the Factory Settings by going to phone menu options because by this time WSOD will be over.
    5. Then Insert the SIM and restart it.
    6. Again Switch Off the same and insert Memory Card.
    7. Switch on again and restore settings as backedup whether in your PC or memory card to get last settings.

  • N97 - White keyboard issue - letters backlight glo...

Have you found any solution to his keypad backlight glowing in a lighting condition ? I mean the letter glow and become white and the background buttons are also white.. so you dont see any letter ...Readability is ZERO.  The sensor dont understand that there is light an it switches on the blacklight.
I am having this problem in evening and indoors.. The keypad becomes all white ?
I know i had E90 and the keyboard backlight was manual control with a button to switc-hon the light or off. Can we adjust the light sensor of nokia. Is there any program to override this backlight sensor. Can we have a command / button to switch on or off this keyboard light. ?
    Please help.

I do have exactly the same problem, now with my 2nd white N97. It is absolutely impossible to work on an airplane or at the train, even sometimes in the office. This phone is NOT a business phone - because you can't use the keyboard when you really need it. I demonstrated it too in the Nokia store and they said, they can't help.
And the Nokia support doesn't help at all. They really suggested that I should pay for a keyboard replacement with black keys, but this can't be done by a Nokia dealer; I would have to go to an independent dealer and I would lose my warranty.
This is the most unprofessional support. I think after all, this will be my last Nokia phone and I will be happy to sell the N97 when Apple launches an iPhone with keyboard. Nokia doesn't know how to make good business. I am an CEO of a german company and if we would treat our customers like Nokia does, we would make less than half of our business.

  • N97 white screen!!!

i have an n97. n owarrenty got it on ebay. first mistake. i go it in the mai lyesterday worked fine till this morning. it was all white the sounds and viberations work but the screen is just white. any sugetions?

try the last option, read carefully and look for specific n97 code if this does not work nokia care or return to ebay is your option
With all these operations I recommend you TAKE OUT MEMORY CARD and DO A BACK UP OF YOUR STUFF!!!
NOTE: In front of the hash key ( #) there is also a STAR key that people often miss and state that the code does not work.
1.. *#7780# - Restore factory settings - resets all the settings to the default ( you will not lose any data) Make sure you back up your data as you will lose all of it when you perform option 2 or 3 on this list. The default code for ALL operations listed here is 12345.
2.*#7370# - Reformat your phone (out of the box, tho keep in mind that most newer nokia phones at least n series, e series and s60 based phones have udp - user data preservation so not ALL data may be lost. still it is a good idea to always do a back up of your stuff.)3. This you perform as a last resort. Nothing else is working. If the phone is not showing any activity, proceed with hard formatting , turn off your phone, hold the following buttons while pressing the power button. (the default code is 12345)
    3. hard reset - hold the following buttons * (star key), 3 (number button) and talk/green key. turn on the phone and do not release those buttons until you see the Nokia boot up screen. once you feel the phone power up you can let go off the power button while still holding all three buttons ( for Nokia 5800XM - use the following buttons to do a hard reset, /GREEN/RED/CAMERA keys pressed all at once on power up. this will only work on 5800's that have firmware version 20... and up. ) For Nokia N97 (unofficial version but works) is SHIFT /SPACE BAR / BACKSPACE while holding the power button. Again do not let go until you see the handshake screen.
If these codes are not working the only thing for you to do is contact your Nokia Care Center/Service for assistance.

  • N97 White Screen / Bricked Thread

    Hi there,
I'd like to start a thread for users to centrally collaberate information about the seemingly increasingly common problem with the Nokia N97 and its proper bricking problem (and by bricking, I mean the bios not booting into the firmware, a'la white screen).
My main reason for starting this thread is because there doesn't seem to be much information out there regarding this issue and it may leave a lot of people experiencing this problem in the lurch, which is not fair, really - it's an incredibly expensive phone.
I'm also quite an articulate fellow in terms of technology, I run a web hosting business and do significant amounts of software development, so I hope I can help the more technically-minded Nokia experts on this forum understand what the less experienced people are having to deal with because a lot of people of have problems like this don't know how to explain what happened exactly in detail and it is indeed the detail that matters when trying to receive help from seasoned experts with certain niché products. So, having gotten that out of the way, here's how it all started...
I'll begin by saying that my problem began with using the NSU. The phone was plugged in via USB, fully charged and NSU detected new firmware and began downloading it, once it had downloaded, it began to install it - about 20 seconds later it reported it had finished installing which already got me curious as I'm sure it took a hell of a lot longer on my older N95 phone. Immediately curious that it may have bricked the phone, I was tempted to pull the USB cable, but I left it there for a short while to see if NSU did anything else (even though now it seems futile, because it was on the finished page as though it had completed the installation) and consequently, it did not do anything further. I pulled the cable out and powered on the phone and thus I was greeted by the white screen of death. I was very gutted, needless to say, I had only had in less than an hour (had problems with the Facebook widget immediately, so I went straight to the NSU).
What happens to the phone now exactly? Well, as it stands, when I power it on, the vibrator notification that tells you it has powered on functions perfectly well and it's obvious that it tries to boot, but it just outputs a white display and then turns off. Sometimes it turns off in such a fashion that it's almost like you took the battery out, i.e. you can still see some charged pixels on the screen which have not yet faded away.
I took it to a Nokia Authorised Care Point (or whatever they're called exactly) and he reported that it would need to be sent off to a high level repair centre (I imagine for the firmware to be loaded back onto the device by JTAG or similar). At time of writing, it's been left for repair for 7 business days; the store told me that it would take approximately 7 to 10 business days, so we're still looking good and I'm hoping to receive a call shortly to say it has been repaired and is ready to collect.
I'm hoping for the best, but I've read a few nightmare stories on these forums, so I'm prepared for the worst and I will be exploring every possible option. Any contributions pertaining to this issue are welcome, however please do not post "I have this problem too" or "I have a similar problem" without specifically having the white screen issue and without providing any additional details that I haven't already covered in this post, keep things relevant. Thanks.

  • N97 white mini when i call someone, the phone emit...

i have2 phone 2 days. since this morning, whichever nr i dial whether from contact list or manually entered, the phone starts and continues to make a beeping alarm noise. the phone connection works, but i can barely hear the person on the other end due to this alarm.
Help? how do i turn this off? it happens on battery, on power cable, on earphone piece and without
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Could be a hardware problem which would need a visit to Nokia service point to get fixed, but first rule out software issues as follows:
    (1) Backup your personal data using PC Suite or Ovi Suite
    Then EITHER:
    (2) Update the phone software using Nokia Software Updater or Ovi Suite. If it is not already on the newest possible version (you've had it just two days but it could have been on the shelf in the shop for some time), then it is always worth checking that it is up to date.
    OR:
    (3) Reformat the phone using the code *#7370# in the dialler. You will be asked to confirm the reset, then enter the security code which is 12345 if you haven't set a personal code. The phone then shuts down and restarts - don't interrupt the process until you are fully restarted and back at the start-up screen.
Finally, assuming that all is well, (4) restore your data backup. It can often be wise to leave out "Settings" and any features that you don't use from the restoration.

  • The white N97 camera flash problem

Has anyone found a fix yet, for the constant flash glare that plagues photos taken on the white N97? Like when the flash goes off it leaves a bloom of light around the bottom left of the photo? It's a pretty well documented problem. I just wondered if anyone has found a fix? Ta.

Best way to fix the white flash on the N97 is to fix it for once and for all. Put the phone N97 down on a table and find your self a snack and a HAMMER, open your snack  and take a bite, Now this is where the fix begin, hold the hammer above the N97 and then lift it up about 0.5metre then swing it ontop of the N97. Voila!! Once you've done so, your N97 white flash camera problem is now fixed forever.
Be warned, it will only worked once, as you can perminantly put it to off mode.
    All the best, good luck
    lol
This is my only way to fix this particular problem, other wise change your camera

  • N97 Mistery of dual flashLED

Hi guys, i just bought my new nokia N97 white. I found a problem with the flash led. So i want to know whether its just me, or all the N97 in the world (Fatal Design Problem). Check out the photo in the attachment.
The problem are, when i use my expensive phone in low light room, the light from flash led is actually reflected by the camera cover slider's wall, creating a bright area in the photo. Since the flash led is on the left side of the lens(from viewfinder point of view), the picture will have some bright area at left. When i take picture with upsidedown position, the picture will have some bright area at right. So, is there any suggestion to avoid that bright area.

ok LED has rather poor performance in low light conditions however i just took these pics one is with the light on the other is with light off.
you can see the difference but the image is actually good. try cleaning your lense also looks like there is some particles on it.

  • N97/FW21: is a camera flash fix included?

I'm about to return my N97 to Nokia, as they haven't been able to fix a flash flooding problem in the camera. Now with the new 2.1 FW I think the software is trying to compensate for the flood light, but the physiological problem is still there, resulting in lost contrast and sharpens, when the flash light bounces between the lenses.
My question: is FW21 trying to address the flash problem or is it just a coincidence the pictures are now slightly better / less horrible?
Helsinki, N97 White gone to recycling, now trying N97Mini...

Nokia never releases any detailed changelog for their fw's, so it's hard to know. But the problem is hardwarerelated and I guess it's a big job to cover that flaw.

  • Screen discolouration when black

For about two weeks I have an issue with my screen on my MacBook Pro (2011). When I'm watching a video and the screen is dark, in the centre of the screen I can see blue and white discolouration. If I look closely in the white area, there are black dots present. They are not visible when the screen has something white or bright coloured playing. I haven't tried internet searches, but haven't found any similar problems. I am not computer savvy.
    Thanks for any advice/suggestions.

Sorry- * I HAVE tried internet searches

  • N97 GPS + Camera Problems!!!

Before I start I would like to point that a phone that costs 650€ should have a video out cable included...
The two main problems of my phone are:
    1. The GPS reception isn't good at all. It takes about 2 minutes to lock a weak signal thats gets lost if  I move...
    2. There is a camera flash problem
Take a look at these samples
Notice the blurry part on the left side of the pictures ?
Do other N97 users experience the same problems ?
Should I ask for a replacement phone ?

dcastrog i agree with you that the sharpie solution might work, but ita not something that should happend in the first place. Nokia has been making phones since i can remember. They should of overlooked this issue, look at N95 the earlier models had covers but then they removed them why b.c it started making problems. I always say you learn on your mistakes but i guess Nokia has a different policy. I bet the same thing is gonna happend to this cover. It will be gone with a new model release. I Just feel like an idiot now paid 800$ for a phone and Nokia didnt even fix it. And now im being sent back and forth to different ppl different companies. But i hope someone will take care of it and fix it.
Here someone started a petition on our forum to nokia.

If you guys feel like this should be taken care of please sign it.
When i called Nokia Care Center i was suprised when i told the Rep that my lens is scrached he put me on hold for 5min when he came back he already has processed a shippiung lable for me. I was very happy about the service that Rep has provided. And i was like Wow they even gonna pay for shipping both ways, so i figured that it has to be a very known issue. But oh well i will keep you guys informed.

  • N97 Mini any better than N97?

I've been offered a N97 Mini as a replacement of my design flawed N97. Nokia has not been able to address my issues in due time. I've had all the usual stuff; software issues (hangs, reboots, out of memory), no lock or bad reception on GPS and severe halos on camera. The camera is still a mess after Nokia applied "the scratch fix" and is unusable when the flash has been used.
I know the N97 Mini has less memory, no FM-transimtter, etc. But is the N97 Mini free of the N97 issues or should try to get a refund in money instead?
Helsinki, N97 White gone to recycling, now trying N97Mini...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The mini tends to have less issues as phone memory C is larger so doesn't run out of memory as quick and freeze, if you want an expert opinion look here
