NALNTSRV and MS04-024 security update

A combination of the MS04-024 security update and the Novell Application Launcher service
(NALNTSERVICE) from ZFD 3.2 SP2 or SP3 (even with the post-SP3 NAL update) appears to
cause a Windows 2000 SP4 Pro workstation to hang at the "Saving your settings..." window
during shutdown. In Event Viewer, the Application Log shows the following event at each
shutdown...
Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM
Event ID: 1000
Event Computer: %Local_Computer_Name%
Description:
Windows cannot unload your registry class file. If you have a roaming profile, your
settings are not replicated. Contact your administrator.
DETAIL Access is denied. , Build number ((2195)).
Removing the security update or disabling/stopping the NALNTSERVICE prevents the hang.
Microsoft's User Profile Hive Cleanup Service (uphclean) reports that nalntsrv.exe is
causing the profile to hang.
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-024
Vulnerability in Windows Shell Could Allow Remote Code Execution (839645)

Has anyone else seen this or can offer any advice?

Have seen. uphclean. It is no need for novell or zenworks to block registry.

  • Lost airport network share and print access - security update?

Roughly around the time I installed the last security update to my 10.3.9 iBook I lost Airport 802.11b access to printing services, afp and smb shares.
I still have internet services (email and web).
If I connect via fixed ethernet everything works.
    Any suggestions?

I fixed this, but I can't remember the full details. Sorry! I just wanted to mention there was a fix. I think I somehow tricked the system into forgetting all prior access and I rejoined the network.

  • Can't open iTunes, Mail, Safari, and others since Security Update download

I see that this subject has come up in other posts - here's my situation -
I have a four year old Powerbook G4, running on 10.4.11. I downloaded (using Firefox as my browser) Java for OS X 10.4 Release 5, iTunes 7.6.2, and Security Update 2008-02 (Power PC). Since that time, I can no longer open iTunes, Mail, Safari, iChat, Yahoo and MSN Messenger. Software update will not open from the Apple menu, but I can open and run it from the System Preferences panel.
I tried to re-download Safari and iTunes, but the installer won't open the files - just says that the installer closed unexpectedly and to send the info to Apple.
I have used Disk Utility to repair permissions on the HD (my HD is not the original HD, but a new one installed two months ago), and the device, without any success.
Any ideas in where to go from here?

Should I try doing that before I try the Archive and Install?
Running DU from the HD will not allow you to repair the HD, but it will allow you to Verify the HD to tell if you need to boot from the Install disk to actually Repair it.
Should you need/want to do it from the Install Disk...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Also, if I try Archive and Install, will it delete all of my personal files, too, or will these be carried over?
If you use A&I and choose the Preserve Users & Settings, it should just replace the OS' files and leave all yours intact. About the only way it could fail is Power Failure during it, (make sure Laptops have AC power during A&I or Repairs, , updates, etc.), Bad Disk/Directory info to start with, or flaky RAM or some such odd thing.

  • After downloading and installing a security update an hour ago, firefox will not start

After going online this morning, using my firefox browser, a box came up saying a security update was available and should be downloaded and installed. This was done with no apparent problem. At the end of the update a note came up saying the update would come into operation after restarting my computer. This I did. The computer started normally, but after clicking on the firefox icon the program did not start. My computer is using Windows XP Service Pack 3.

hello tncovery, does it work when you download the full setup file from getfirefox.com again & install it on top of your current installation?

  • Pixelated Ghosts and Shadows following security update 10.4.6

After making yesterdays security update and restarting, the desktop has pixel shadows, the icons have shadows and leave pixel ghost trails.
I have no third party software installed and no peripherals. Very stock powerbook.
Everything was running perfect until the update?

Repairing disk permissions rarely if even fixes anything. It is probably the most over used and the least needed of all advice given here. I personally rarely do it and never do it before and after a software update. I consider it a huge waste of time. If I was having issues I may try it.
Most people that have issues with an update had them before they did it and think the update will solve their problem. That rarely , if ever, works. After every update people start posting about how the update broke their Mac, broke up their marriage and made the dog run away.
I have no reason not to update. If we go by the logic that "if it ain't broke don't fix it then we would all be at 10.3.9, which works just fine.
The enhancements made with the updates are to give you additional stability and perhaps solve some knows issues. I have yet to read a compelling argument from anyone that would convince me not to update.
That being said. As usual 5 Macs updated, 0 issues. I have NEVER had a problem with a software update since 10.0 came out.

  • Unmounted HDD and the latest Security update

Yesterday I installed the latest security/Java update and it crashed my system, just like it has done to quite a few other people: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9053491#9053491
In trying to reinstall OS X, I ran across what I guess is the second installation disc error, where after the first disc is installed and the system reboots, it never finishes booting nor does it ask for the second disc.
I thought my problem might be a HDD error, so I ran the installation disc and did the Disk Utility. I asked it to repair the disc if needed. It could not complete the repair because of an "Invalid sibling link." And this is where things went really bad.
Foolishly, I searched the internet for "invalid siblining link" and found this site: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20070204093925888
Which suggests that to fix this error you need to unmount your HDD and run fsck_hfs -r in the Terminal.
Why would I be so stupid as to follow this advice and unmount my HDD with little-to-no understanding of what unmounting does or of Terminal commands? Why would I not bother to read the comments following that post which decry the dangers of unmounting? The only excuse I can think of was that I was delirious after nearly 8 hours of trying to salvage my iMac from the Java/Security update. Needless to say, I successfully unmounted my HDD but did not successfully run the fsck test. Leaving me without a HDD and unable to install OS X.
At this point, I'm planning on taking to the Genius Bar in Austin over the weekend, hoping that they can salvage my new machine (less than a year old!) from the mess I/Apple made. Any one have any suggestions on remounting a HDD or any advice in general?

A wiser head may step in on this as regards to the mounting issue, but I am not currently under the impression that that is what is wrong. I think that command only applies when you are running the computer and once you turn off the computer and turn it on again the drive should appear in Disk Utility. In fact, if the drive were wiped clean your Disk Utility should see it. Yes, if you unmount it to run fsk, you then need to mount it to get it to show under that session, but if you turned off the computer or restarted it then all would be reset.
So, if you turn off your computer, boot from your install Disk and start up Disk Utility, does the drive show up at all? If so you're off the a start. If not then it is suggesting serious problems (terminal?) with the drive.

  • Disappearing mail and tasks after security update -- help?!?

Hello, friends. Hope someone has some advice. Running Tiger 10.4.10 on a G5; Installed security update 2007-006 just now, restarted and opened Entourage to get to work.
All my tasks and non-IMAP mail has disappeared, replaced by mail and tasks from 2005 that have already been deleted and/or archived. I have a week-old backup disk of Entourage items but have added mail and tasks since then. Have repaired permissions, checked identities, everything -- anyone know how I can get my stuff back?
    Thanks very very much.
P.S. -- I cannot recommend installing security updates immediately anymore. The last 3 updates have completely hosed my system in some form or another, and it's very frustrating.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Bumping to see if anyone's learned anything. Project that wasn't in the last backup has just been ordered due. Aaaaigh.
    Thank you very very much.

  • DSL connection spotty and slow after security update

I updated both the latest security patch and firmware for my Intel Mac Mini a few days ago, and since then have had notably slower DSL internet service. Frequent time-outs in locating servers etc. Skype connection is much much worse than before the update(s).
Anyone have similar experience and/or suggestions?
Mac Mini 1.66 Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

There are two distinct problems that can occur with internet connections, giving two different symptoms.
If, for example, you click on a link or enter a URL in a browser and it takes ages to start the process of loading the page, but once started it loads reasonably well, the issue is with the DNS lookup. On the other hand, if the browser finds the page and looks ready to start loading it pretty quickly, but then takes ages to render the page, the problem is far more likely to be an issue with data timing out.
In the situation where there is an apparent delay in locating servers, the problem is most likely related to the DNS settings in the system. DNS (Domain Name Service) is the means by which the system translates the addresses we find easy to remember and work with (such as www.yahoo.com) to the numbering system the internet itself uses (such as 69.147.11.210 in the case of yahoo). When you send your system off looking for an internet resource by name such as yahoo.com, it first checks with whatever DNS server you have told it to use, what the IP number is, and if that DNS server is slow to respond, the process of accessing the page/resource will appear to hang, sometimes for many seconds.
You can test is the system has a DNS issue by opening a browser and typing http://69.147.11.210 and hitting enter. This should, after a very brief pause, load the Yahoo home page. If doing it this way gives you a markedly faster page access time than usual, go to your network preference pane and open the ethernet configuration (if using ethernet - the airport for wifi or modem for dialup) and in the DNS servers section, manually enter the DNS server addresses used by your ISP. There are usually two or three and they may be listed in the ISP's help pages on the internet, in the documentation that they sent, or in your router.
Actually any valid DNS server IP addresses will do, so you can actually doa search for DNS server addresses and use any that you find. Bear in mind of course that a DNS server in your own locality, or region will be likely to be quicker to respond than a DNS server on the other side of the world... though not always!
Give that a try if the problem is with the system accessing a page to begin with.
If it's that the page loads very slowly once started, the first thing to do is clear the browser's caches (in safari, try 'reset safari' which sets it back to first-used state), which can often help. After that it may be necessary to delve into the depths of the system's IP configuration since some ISPs don't seem to have particularly Mac-friendly service configurations.

  • TS4424 I still can't get my mail to work.I have reinstalled Security update and combo 3 times. About ready to call Apple but mI don't think I should pay for it!!!!

I can't my Apple mail to work.  It started when I did an up date.  When I went to use mail  (the little stamp at bottom)  it said, "you can't use this version of mail with this version of OS X.  I looked on support and was told to solve the problem  by downloading combo package and security update. Did it 3 times.  I did everything.  Still doesn't work.  I even took everything mail out of applications and the library and did those two updates and still can't get it.  Could I reinstall OS X Snow Leopard and would that affect any of my documents like i photo or i tunes?  I don't want to loose anything!  I have spent way too long on this problem.  I feel like I own  PC with windows again.  Please help!!!!!!    Frustated

No need to reinstall Snow. Try trashing all the Mail.apps you have. (But don't empty the trash yet!) Do a search for those. Reinstall Mail from the DVD in Optional Installs. This will put Mail 4.2 in Applications, then run the Combo Update, which will update Mail to 4.5, and then the Security Update again, in that order.

  • Issue with Safari and / or 2011-02 Security Update???

Updated our iMac and Macbooks to above.  Since that point, Airport Utility (AU) can not find the Airport Extreme (AE) from either Macbook.  The Macbooks can attach to the AE - just that AU can not find it.  However, our iMac AU - hard wired ethernet connection - can find the AE.  I reloaded the AE 7.5.2 firmware - still same problem.  Also having issues with connecting to the TM backup from the MB- seems related to the AE.  Reloaded AE with 7.5.2 - no change.  Never a problem until this latest update.  No other changes have been made.
Has anyone else encountered this problem or have a suggestion on how I might fix it.

Rod - Thanks for the suggestion - I ended up not trying it.
I reverted Airport Extreme (via my AU through the hard-wired iMac) to 7.4.2 from 7.5.2.
Note - 7.5.2 had been working fine until the Safari and 2011-02 Security update were installed.  Seems as if it caused something to go wrong in 7.5.2.
I can now see AE via AU via the wifi Macbooks - and TM is working again from the Macbooks.  The TM disk is actually on the iMac.
    Thanks - Rob

  • Security Update 2007-04 Broke my Mouse/Keyboard Settings and Login Items

Any help would be more than appreciated; this is not a tragic issue, but it's annoying and I dislike having things broken, especially because this old Mac has been pretty much trouble-free for me over the years.
On the first reboot after installing Security Update 2007-04 in OS X 10.4.9 I noticed that my login items (iCal, A-Dock) did not launch, and that my mouse cursor and keyboard speed settings had reverted to the default "slow" speeds.
The login items were still present in their normal place (System > Accounts > Login Items), but do not launch after a login/logout or reboot. (The items launch fine manually, though.) Similarly, I can change the keyboard and mouse settings (both are Apple Pro devices), but these settings revert upon rebooting.
As per usual I repaired permissions immediately before and after installing Security Update, and I had nothing running while the update was in progress. I tried deleting and resetting the login items to no avail; the new choices appear in system preferences, but do not launch anything on login.
I've cleared all caches using Yasu, I reinstalled 10.4.9 using the Combo updater, and still I go back to square one when I reboot. I even deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist and ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist ; that didn't do anything, either.

So, reinstalling the combo 10.4.9 didn't fix it, neither did installing today's Apple Security Update 2007-004v1.1, neither did resetting the PRAM, neither did numerous series of cache clearing, nor deleting all login startup items.
Any ideas, folks? Apart from simply not restarting (which I seldom need to do anyway), I don't like having things broken, and having to reset my mouse and keyboard speed settings after a restart is tedious, let along not having anything launch automatically.

  • Security Update and then...

I downloaded today's security update on 2 Mac's. My 12" Powerbook went fine...
After installing the security update on my 20" iMac ppc, I am stuck at the grey apple screen with the spinning gear.
    Things I have tried:
    • I unplugged everything external except for the keyboard and mouse.
    • I booted from Leopard DMG and repaired the HD.
    • Reset the PRAM.
    • Tried starting in "Safe Mode".
I am still stuck at the grey Apple screen with spinning gear...
Is the only thing left to re-install OS (archive install, preserve user settings)?
And if so, do I re-download and install the security update?
Please, any help would be appreciated.

Well, you've probably got to do the restore anyway. I think you probably should try the security patch again, only this time download it and then apply instead of using software update. Make sure that all devices except keyboard and mouse are detached from your machine. Repair permissions pre and post if the upgrade works. If you have Disk Warrior or something similar, run it after you restore your machine but before the upgrade.
    Good Luck.

  • Safari and Mail both corrupted after Security Update

Like many others, I've had a problem with Safari and Mail stability that began with the latest Apple Security Update.
I've tried everything I know how to try to fix it, and I'm stumped.
I've noticed a few people have had astute users such as iBod find the culprit in their crash logs, and I'm hoping like mad for a similar result.

    iMac G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Jim,
A mystery indeed. Can you recall installing or changing any system preferences around the time the problems started?
As for the parts that Safari uses, I must admit I am not 100% sure where they all are. I think the most important folder is:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework/
After deleting that and Safari itself, try reinstalling the Safari 1.3.1 update
You will probably need to delete this file before running the installer or it will think it doesn't need installing:
    /Library/Receipts/SafariUpdate-1.3.1.pkg
(the file may well be called something different - I'm on Tiger 10.4 so this is a guess)
If that works, you might want reapply the 10.3.9 combo update and then the security update again. Let us know how that goes.
I don't care about bookmarks, because I've got all my bookmarks up on my .Mac account and they'll come back as soon as I run iSync.
I would be careful here. I have a feeling that iSync will simply copy up the default bookmark file created by Safari (when you finally get it working again) as it has a newer timestamp versus the .Mac copy. Better to be safe than sorry and backup your /Users/YourUsername/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist before blowing everything away

  • New Security Update - Airport no longer works. Help ?

    Hey all
this morning I ran various software updates: itunes, safari and the new security update. From that moment onwards, I cannot access the internet using my MacBook (about a year old, running Mac OS X 10.4.11). I normally use Firefox to access the net, but neither that nor Safari work now.
I know my internet works as I can access it wirelessly using my work laptop and my desktop.
But when I try to access my broadband using my macbook:
    a) the "waves" on the airport all remain light-shaded
    b) I receive an error message saying " There was an error joining the Airport network 'Zyxel' " (the router is zyxel).
If anyone has any thoughts on how to reset the connnection back to how it was, I'd be EXTREMELY grateful.
    thanks
    B

Having the same problem, but only with my Mac. PC and iPhone continue to work fine. Must be security update related. Is there a way to uninstall the security update?

  • What next.... (Security Update 2008-003)

    Greetings all,
I know that there are numerous threads here already about this problem that many of us seem to be having. Mine is similar so I will try to explain with as much detail as I can. Please read the whole post because I have followed most if not all of the advice I've found in replies to this topic and nothing has worked thus far. My desktop (Gigabit Ethernet G4 running 10.4.11) is the unit with the problems, my laptop (15" Powerbook running 10.4) is running fine and has pulled field medic duty in trying to fix this. I've been able to successfully Target Disk the desktop from the laptop and all my files are still there, the bugger just won't finish starting up. I explain in detail below.
So the other night I downloaded and installed the Security Update 2008-003 via the Software Update pane. All went well, no error messages or hiccups. I restarted the computer as necessary and it gets all the way to the end of the blue progress bar on the "Starting up Mac OS..." stage and hangs. I waited a long time and it still just hung. Sound familiar?
I know many people have said that this is due to pre-existing problems or messy systems but I run maintenance on mine fairly regularly and it was working strong before the update.
Here's what I have tried so far:
    • started in safe mode or at least I tried to, i held shift but it still got to the same place and hung up so maybe I didn't hold it at the right time? I held it after the chime until I saw the grey apple screen with the progress clock
    • put my desktop into Target Disk mode and connected to my laptop, I ran Disk Utility and repaired the disk until everything came out clean. Repair/Verify Permissions, however, was grayed out (more on this in a second).
    • Ran Disk Warrior from the laptop on the Target Disk desktop drive. It recognized it and attempted to run a clean up but I kept getting an error message saying it is too severely damaged and can't be repaired. This even after I had run Disk Utility with a clean bill of health.
    • I tried resetting the PRAM several times but it didn't help.
    • started in single-user mode and ran "fsck -fy" per some unix commands I found on the forums. it came back clean numerous times. I also tried running repair permissions via the same screen but the cursor would just jump down to a blank line and nothing I input would do anything.
    • held option during startup to bring up the startup disk selection screen. It loaded but the little stopwatch just spun and wouldn't let me select my second hard-drive as my startup. That would've solved a ton of problems right there as the second drive never got the update and I've used that to fix the first in the past.
    • with the desktop targeted I ran terminal in the laptop and tried the unix repair permissions command from there but it gave me some jargon about the command and a line about ownership of the drive and wouldn't do it.
    • finally, I put my desktop into target disk mode, and started the laptop from the OS installer CD. I ran Disk Utility from the laptop on the desktop and I was able to do both Repair Disk AND Repair Permissions. The disk was fine, the permissions had some fixes but came back clean on a second pass. I figured this would fix it all but, alas, no dice. Still hanging at the end of "Starting Mac OS...".
Is there something I am missing or anything else I can try? As I said all the files and info are still there because I can get to them just fine via the Target Disk mode, it just won't finish loading the OS. My other issue is that I have a second hard drive in the desktop and the Target Disk mode only mounts the primary drive. The second drive is my backup drive and I need to be able to access it.
Any help would be greatly greatly appreciated folks, thanks so much!!

    Update:
I also looked in the system.log file and found this repeated numerous times at the end:
launchd: /system/library/coreservices/loginwindow.app/contents/macos/loginwindow port /dev/console exited abnormally: segmentation fault
    Below it, this:
launchd: getty repeating too quickly on port /dev/console, sleeping
Interspersed among the lines about the loginwindow were other inputs, most notably these:
The following startupitems failed to properly start:
    /library/startupitems/symdcinit
    -execution of startup script failed
    system/library/startupitems/fibrechannel
    -execution of startup script failed
Again, are any of these files ones that can be trashed and will be rebuilt by the OS when it starts? Or can copies be dragged from my healthy system to the failing one to overwrite them?
IF you are fully backed up AND the two systems are running the same version of the OS on the same architecture (e.g. both PPC or both Intel) then you could try dragging items from the laptop to replace. Alternatively, you could use Pacifist to extract them from the install disk or from a later OS update where available.
I would create a directory /Library/StartupItems.disabled and drag the contents of /Library/StartupItems into that folder. Nothing there is critical so disable all of that stuff for now. I would do the same with /Library/LaunchDaemons.disabled and /Library/LaunchAgents.disabled if applicable. Then do the same with any corresponding folders in your user Library.
You'll still need to replace the FibreChannel item because that's system and presumably important.
I'm thinking, though, that the number of errors you're seeing probably indicates an archive and install would be the best option.
