Name-changing Mac

My Mac mini keeps changing its name from "Mac mini" to "Mac mini (2)".
I've searched online regarding the issue and most of the answers are that there is another Mac on the same network.
This is not the case as I have just the one Mac.
I renamed it numerous times via System Preferences>Sharing>Computer Name and also [Edit] option (see image below).
I've no idea why it keeps renaming with (2). As I say, there's no other Mac or PC on my network.

Howdy,
I was seeing this happen randomly too. I unchecked System Preferences->Energy Saver->Enable Power Nap and Wake for Wi-Fi network access and haven't seen it change since. No guarantees but it has worked for me.
Good Luck,
Herb Schulz

  • InDesign Links / Path Name change on Mac

We have 5 Mac users on a windows domain using Adobe CC.  They are placing images in to files as links. They are continually getting the "This document contains a link to a source..." error.  The one commong thing I can find is that when looking at the path name in the links pane that it changes from user to user.
User one inserts link from a network drive that is properly mapped. Path shows (example) /Shared/Communications/Logos/Image1.jpg
User two or three opens the same indesign file and gets the link source error.  Path shows /Volumes/Shared-1/Communications/Logos/Image1.jpg
This was not happening in prior versions of InDesign. While I can't rule out a network or user issue, it's odd that the path name changes.  I checked the /Volumes/ folder and no duplicate names of the drives exist.  I have no idea why the path name is being modified when another user opens the file.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You should package you InDesign document. Use the packeged document. New files linked later after packagen copy to the Link folder, you can do it from the link panel with the command Copy links to, in German it is in a sub menu of Hilgfsprogramme, should be something like Help Programs, I don't know the exactly naming of that menu in the US version.

  • Prime Infrastructure - Automating the change "mac@ - AP name" with CSV file

    Hi,
We are going to deploy a lot of new LAP. For each site our  customer will give us an excel file with the MAC @ of the AP and the  target name.
I was wondering if it was possible to automate the  injection of this file "mac <-> ap name" and then apply the  predefined template with P.I ?
If yes, could you explain how, as I am new to Prime Infrastructure.,The goal is to avoid to rename each AP individually on prime as there is a lot of AP to deploy.
    Many thanks in advance !
    Oliv.

    Hi Oliv:
In the Classic View of Prime Infrastructure, under Configure > Access Points, there's a menu option for Import AP Config.  This uses a .csv file to match APs by the MAC address and make changes in bulk.  From the online help:
    Sample File Header:
    AP Name,Ethernet MAC,Location,Primary Controller,Secondary Controller,Tertiary Controller
    ap-1, 00:1c:58:74:8c:22, sjc-14-a, controller-4404-1, controller-4404-2, controller-4404-3
The CSV file can contain following fields. AP Ethernet MAC Address is mandatory, Optional fields are           AP Name, Location, Primary Controller, Secondary Controller and Tertiary Controller.
Optional fields can be empty. AP Config Import will  ignore empty optional field values. However, if Primary Controller and  Secondary Controller entries are empty then Unified AP update is not  done
Ethernet MAC: AP Ethernet MAC Address
    AP Name:AP Name
    Location:AP Location
    Primary Controller:Primary Controller Name
    Secondary Controller:Secondary Controller Name
    Tertiary Controller:Tertiary Controller Name

Please read my question carefully, this is, I think, a question for the experts. It's not the usual name change question.
When I setup my new MacBook Pro, something slipped by me and my computer was named First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro (using my real first and last name).
I changed the computer name in Preferences/Sharing to a new name and Preferences/Accounts to just be Mike. I can right click on my account name, choose advanced, and see that everything looks right.
However, If I do a scan of my network with my iPhone using the free version of IP Scanner, it lists my computer as First-Lasts-MacBook-Pro! And it lists the user as First-Last.
So even though another Mac just sees my new computer name, and my home folder is Mike, somewhere in the system the original setup with my full name is still stored. And it's available on a network scan. So my full name might show up at a coffee shop.
Can I fully change the name without doing a complete re-install of Lion and all my apps?

One thought... you said the iPhone displayed your computer's old name? I think that you must have used the iPhone with this computer before you changed the name. So no one else's iPhone should display your full name unless that iPhone had previously connected to your Mac. For example, I did this exact same change, and I use the Keynote Remote app to connect with my MacBook Pro. It would no longer link with my MacBook Pro under the old name, and I found that I had to unlink and then create a new link under the new name. So the answer to your question is, there is nothing you need to do on the Mac, but rather the phone, and no other phone will display your full name.

  • InDesign CS4: File names change to string of numbers

Occasionally, one of our users will save an InDesign CS4 file, only to have the file name change.  For example, a file originally named "#kwn25501.bcbsNM.indd" was saved as "#kwn25501.bc157-1223857848."
If the user is not aware that this has happened, things can go horribly, terribly wrong in our production environment. The "numbered" file may be missing key elements, or be somehow be corrupt in some fashion. In one case, this led us to having to reprint a job because the "numbered" file was missing a photo; somehow, that file was used (and perhaps renamed after the fact) to create the final output.
We use Macs running InDesign CS4 6.0.5. Some of our Macs are running Tiger 10.4.11, while others are running Leopard 10.5.8. The problem seems to related to the Leopard machines, although that is not 100 percent certain at this point. All of these Macs are bound to Active Directory and save files to a Windows 2003 server. I know Adobe recommends against working on files over a network, but perhaps there is an explanation for this file renaming aside from network issues.
Any light that can be shed on this issue will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Kevin Stauffer

Check to see if maybe your original filename is the problem.
You may need that particular name for a workflow reason, but some of the symbols in the middle of your filename are generally not a good idea. Especially working off of a server, file names should be ONLY alpha-numeric characters, no symbols, no periods (except for the file type) and only underscores or dashes to separate words, no spaces.
The reason is some of those symbols get picked up as machine language and all sorts of bad can happen as a result.

  • Changing MAC Address

Recently i have been trying to change my Router's MAC Address. I have a WRT54g v.3. I have done it before where i had unplugged the internet cable going from the wall to the modem. I saw the change on the 192.168.1.1 status page. And i noticed with a proxy and the new changed MAC address i was able to get into gaming servers i hadn't been able to before because my IP was banned.
Now when i try to change my MAC address, it doesn't seem to change on the router stautus page like it did once before. I'm sure that it's possible to concel my identity of my old IP and get a new IP (through a proxy), many people do this for security reasons so i'm hoping linksys products can offer some kind of security by doing this.
btw, sorry about the name, if it's possible can it be changed to Joe. Thanks guys.

Your MAC is "stuck" to that router, you need to spoof it. Google it.

  • Connection Errors to Remote Desktop from OSX after Domain name change

We have an issue using Microsoft Remote Desktop from Macs in our school. All was well until we changed the domain name of our RDS servers and installed a new wildcard certificate. Connections work perfectly in Windows 7/8 and also iOS on iPads, but we cannot
get any Macs to connect having tried OSX 10.7 and 10.9. The error message says the connection failed to load but seems to add a spurious end to the connection string - TS/en-US/Default.aspx - but we cannot trace where this is being picked up.
We can get to the site in a web browser and sign in to receive the "browser not supported" message in Safari so traffic is obviously getting to the severs.
Has anyone else had a similar issue? We have spent days poking around with DNS etc but can't seem to make any progress here.

    Hi Jeremy,
I have tried removing connections and also re-installing the App. We have been using this App since January with no real issues until we made our domain name change - I really don't understand why it works fine in Windows and iOS but not OSX. We are doing
nothing different to what we have done from day 1.
Log file from our old connection when it was working looked like this:

my host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

There are several possible causes for this problem.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is due to a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. See also this support article.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • Authentication popups after computer name changed to computer record name

    Hi
I'm not sure if anyone else is facing this issue, but I have been unable to find anything in the forums.
I have setup a number of client machines on Lion Server, all using 10.7.4. I used WGM and Remote Desktop to make some changes and deploy software
Since then, I have been getting the following authentication popup on all client machines (twice after login, and then every 30 mins or so afterwards):
Mac OS S wants to make changes. Type an administrator's name and password to allow this.
The changes made prior to this happening were:
    - Overplay VPN installed (using RD pkg install)
    - Adobe CS 5.5 installed (using Adobe Enterprise Deployment Tool and RD package install)
    - Evernote installed (using RD copy)
    - Set computer name to computer record name (From WGM > Computer Groups > Preferences > Options)
I have now removed all the installed software from one machine, and log in as administrator, unbind the machine, rename the computer manually to the record name, rebind the computer.
As far as I can see, I have reverted all changes one at a time, and am still receiving the admin password requests when logged in as a network user.
The only machine that seems to be ok, is the one where the name change to computer record name was unsuccessful.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can fix this issue?
    Thanks
    Suraj

Issue resolved. It turns out none of my changes caused the issue as much as Google Chrome Autoupdates. The new version constantly checks for updates which makes clients on Lion Server go haywire. Solution to turn off auto-updating:
    Open a Terminal window:
    defaults write com.google.Keystone.Agent checkInterval 0
    Relaunch Chrome.

  • Computer name changes incrementally (1, 2, 3...)

    Dear Apple Friends,
I have an issue that is affecting all the Macs on my home network: 3 MacBooks (wireless) and an iMac (hardwired) connected to an Apple Airport Extreme dual-band 802.11n/a/b/g 5Ghz/2Ghz wireless router. All the Macs are running Yosemite 10.10, I am running firmware v7.6.4 on the Airport (latest version). We have turned on Back to my Mac, File Sharing, and Screen Sharing (all are used pretty regularly) in the Sharing screen.
So here is what is happening...
All the Macs on our network are having their computer names changed with the suffix of (1), (2), all the way to 6 now.
I have tried resetting our Airport router (turn off/on again) and that seems to stop it for a day but then it starts again.
A few days ago, I did a factory reset on the Airport router per the instructions on the Apple website (hold down reset until it blinks constantly) to clear the router. Sure enough, the names started changing again after about a day.
Sometimes, I will change the name back, and it will rename itself again automatically right after I change it. i.e. John's MacBook Pro => John's MacBook Pro (1)
I have gone so far as to reboot every Mac on the network, shutting off the router, then turning it on again, and the issue returns. I am going to try and set up a DHCP reservation next and see if that helps.
Has anyone else run across this? If so, is this a bug or is there something I'm missing here? Thanks you for your time.

    To "fix" I:
First, I turned off networking which was WiFi in my circumstance.
Next, I named my computer back to the original desired name in the "Sharing" system preference without the (n).
    Then I added a "--no-namechange" parameter in the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist.
    Unloaded and loaded the deamon:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.discoveryd.plist
Last, I reconnected to the network.
Now when I connect to the network instead of getting something like below in the Console.app:
"discoveryd: Basic Bonjour Changing computer name from <hostname> to <hostname> (2)"
    This appears in the Console.app:
"discoveryd: Basic Bonjour Would have changed computer name from <hostname> to <hostname> (2), but it's disabled"
I could not find a Yosemite bug filed https://bugreport.apple.com/, but this site helped me hack my solution:

  • IPhoto file names changed

I have just noticed that in several of my events the underlying file name of several imported photos has been changed to my assigned Title.  Since I didn't think Apple provided a way in iPhoto for Mac to change the file name, and I am not digging into the file structure of iPhoto, I can't change the file name back to that assigned by the camera (and I don't necessarily know it anyway).  I see no obvious reason why specific file names were changed.  Is there some non-obvious way to change file names that I accidentally stumble upon?

iPhoto 9.4.3.  Not sure what you mean by history.  It has been in use for some time.  No other obvious problems.  The file name changes, at least that I have noticed, are from this year and, in particular, this past week.  One other observation is that I only happened to notice because I exported a group of photos and saw that a few of the exported names did not have the camera assigned names and then I looked back at iPhoto (hovering the cursor over the title - which gives the file name).  Again, the files were exported as a group and no obvious reason for something to change for one rather than another file.  It is possible the change took place when I exported the photos rather than earlier as I had no reason to check.

  • Computer name change after migration

I did a software migration from my macbook to my new iMac. Everything went great except the migration named the new iMac "macbook", the name I used on the macbook. I went to system pref. and did the name change to iMac24 and that works fine for sharing on the local network. However, on the Finder the name of the new computer at Home is still "Macbook", the migrated name. Kinda confusing when looking at the Finder pane, two Macbooks show up, one under shared and one under places.
Also tried to change the name of the Home at the Mac HD but was told couldn't be done.
Is there anyway to change the name of the Home file or am I stuck with Macbook as the name for my iMac?

The Home name I presume is your "short" name.
You can change the short name in Accounts by unlocking the padlock and right-clicking the Account and selecting Advanced Options.
Pleased note the Warning and the required reboot.
I suggest being sure your backup is up-to-date before changing the short name.

  • Reference field name changes

I'm working on two sheets, one with all the nitty-gritty details of my bills, the other a summary.
When I wanted to put an if() formula that reads a cell in the summary sheet to read from one field in the details screen the Field Name changes. It was working on most of the fields until I got to one set of them then this happened:
    when I put in
    =IF('Bill/Exp Comparator' :: '12/29/09' J C Penney="","",'Bill/Exp Comparator' :: '12/29/09' J C Penney)
    and hit enter I'd get
    =IF('Bill/Exp Comparator' :: '12/29/09' '3/9/10' C Penney="","",'Bill/Exp Comparator' :: '12/29/09' '3/9/10' C Penney)
I would delete the '3/9/10' and hit enter again, it would change back to it. I don't know why is it doing it with one field or how to stop it.
This is another reason why I should stick to a Windows' product.

These are the paths to two preferences files that could be causing the abnormal behaviour.
Go to the Finder, open a new Finder Window.
In the sidebar, the house icon with your (user)name under it is <yourAccount>. Start there with a double click or single click, depending which view (icons, list or columns) you are using in the Finder Window, to open that item. In the new list that opens, repeat with the next item (Library) in the path.
The last item in the path is a preferences file, identified by the .plist suffix on the filename.
Preferences files are constantly being read, changed and written to by the application, and occasionally become corrupted. Deleting them is a common 'first aid' step. The application (Numbers in this case) will create a new, clean copy of the file when the need arises.
if this is using a script, I'm not practiced at that, and the "LSSharedFileList" part bugs me. "share" with what, where, whom? Is this opening my computer to others without my knowledge?
If your profile is correct (it says you are using Mac OS X v10.4.11), you are unlikely to find the second file (com.apple.iWork.Numbers.LSSharedFileList.plist). This is a file associated with Launch Services, and was introduced in OS X v 10.5. It's on Yvan's machine as he has Numbers set up to Launch as one of his log in items.
I don't mind emailing a template because it's nothing impressive to anybody. Would you mind if I send a template?
Go ahead. Please put "Numbers Ref Field Changes" in the subject line. My address is available in my profile—click my neme to the left of this message to get there.
