Name in Shared Network

I have several Apple computers all connected through a network including some pc. I tried to change the "Computer Name" from System Pref->Sharing but all the other computers including Apple ones, kept the previous name. I restarted the "Sharing Service" but nothing changed.
it keeps the old names even if I reboot the computers. That creates a misunderstanding named network while both names work.
Should I try anything else ? There is also a Active Directory Domain but this doesn't play any role to the problem I have.
Thank you.

Did you change in both places in Sharing...

  • NetBIOS name in shared column?

Can anyone explain why my G5's NetBIOS name (WINS) shows up on the shared column when I am logged on to my powerbook or IMAC (both wireless)? The G5 is connected to the Airport Extreme via ethernet.
Just updated several days ago to 10.5.1 and this just started the other day. Annoying to see that odd name there in the finder window under shared....
Must have something to do with the ethernet since this does not ocur with the wireless computers

My flat mate's Mac mini also shows its netbios name on the network when viewing from my iMac. Can't seem to find out how to get it to go away! Mine does not however show up on his. We both have AFP and SMB enabled.

  • Yosemite changes the name of shared connection

    Hello ppl
    I've a mini recently upgraded to 10.10
This computer is shared on my network with a specific name (ie room)
After a while I see that this computer is shared with the name "room2"
Also logging on it and checking the name of sharing "room2" is reported. I set it again to the correct name, but yosemite changes it again after some time.
    Hints?
Btw: it was a clean installation

OK so I got a bit fed up with this issue, I was also going around in circles until the fix (I have waited over 2 weeks to test before posting this) came to me.
    Open System Preferences > Network
In the network section you will most likely see "Automatic" listed as your Location.  Click on your current location then click "Edit Locations".  Create a new location (I called mine Home but I do not think the name matters) then select it.  The old location can now be removed.  Apply the changes then sigh with relief.  It would seem that the location that you were using when upgrading to Yosemite somehow got corrupted.
I hope that this is a fix that also is workable for you too

  • Mac's name blank in network after changing it

When I first booted up my Mac mini it made me type my name for my account and I decided to use my full name, I was OK with that. What I didn't know is that it's going to use my first name as my computers name so when I went to find my iPhone/mac it showed "Amiel's Mac mini". I also checked in the client list in my modem and it showed the same. I use "amielDH" as a name to all my iDevices like "amielDH's iPad/iPhone" and I really would like to continue doing that with my iDevices and Macs. So I googled how to change my computers and name I change it in "Sharing" under "System Preferences". But when I went to check on the name in my modem's client list it showed only blank. I decided to revert my computers name and it showed up  like nothing happen. It was OK.
Question is: How do I change my computer's name that the network would also show?

I'm sorry, I'm asking how to change the name of my computer/mac on my network since it's showing blank right now after I change my computer's name under "sharing". Thanks!

  • Lost Shared Network Server

I have upgraded to Yosemite recently and have lost the shared icon under the finder menu that maps to my office server and have no idea how to find it again. What shows is Devices and under that my MacBook and it's icon. when I go into that I can see my hard drive, a network icon (which does nothing) and a remote disk icon.
Prior to Yosemite, the way into the server was just in the main finder menu under a shared subcategory listing.  Anyone have any idea how to re-map this?
    Thanks

    Hi Horv1,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you need to find a shared network drive or computer, try these steps:
Connect to a computer or server by browsing
Open a Finder window, and find the shared computer’s name in the Shared section of the Finder window sidebar. You may need to click All to see all the shared computers.
If no shared computers appear in the Shared section of the sidebar, put the pointer on the word “Shared” and click Show.
When you locate the shared computer or server, select it [double click], then click Connect As.
If necessary, enter your user name and password, then select volumes or shared folders on the server.
In some cases you need the network area or workgroup for the shared computer. If you don’t have this information, contact the computer’s owner or your network administrator.

  • Prevent MAC Mini from appearing on the shared network

    Hi,
As above, how do I go about hidding the MAC Mini from appearing on the shared network which is able to seem by other? I had already disable the file sharing under the sharing? What I want to achieve is to totally prevent the MAC Mini from appearing on the shared network as the network I am connecting to is public network. Between I am runnning OS X.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
As far as I'm aware of you can't without disabling a couple of things that'll also prevent any internet usage, since it's all tied together now.
Might name your Mac... F.B.I (Hidden)!

  • Unidentified shared network

I see a shared network on my MBP that I don't recognize, a 3 digit number. It does not have to do with any wireless network (remains whether airport is on or off) and when I click on it I am unable to connect. Not sure how or why, but when I went snooping around in the network settings I found the same three digit number under the WINS tab as the NetBIOS Name (not that I have a clue what that is, sorry).
This came up recently, and it it may be innocuous enough. I'd rather clear it out (I think I can do this by removing it in that section of the system/network preferences, but want to understand where it came from and what it is first.
    Thanks in advance

Go to System Preferences>Network. Click "Advanced". Click the WINS tab. Is what you are seeing the same thing as in the NetBIOS Name window, or in the WINS Servers window?
If so, that's its source. You can delete from there (sometimes). Had this problem twice and rid it once by deleting what was in the NetBIOS Name window, or in the WINS Servers window (can't recall which). Then restart and it worked. One time it did not work and I did a reinstall of the latest Combo updater and it went away.
    Hope this helps!

  • Creating a folder alias on a shared network drive

    Hi,
I have a folder that is housed on my computer that I would like an alias of on my company's shared network drive. I will have access to the shared network drive from my home computer either through Citrix or a VPN, so I would like the alias on that drive so that it will reflect any changes I make to the files within either from my work or from my home computer. My question therefore is, how do I create an alias of a folder on a shared network drive? I tried creating an alias on my local drive and then dragging it to the shared network drive, but that just copied the folder and removed the alias.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Nevermind. I must have copied over the original folder the first time instead of the alias, as a simple drag and drop of an alias folder just worked fine for me.

correct credential but unable to access that. If i re-share the folder then we are access it but when we are restarted the system then same problem is occurring.
I have checked IP,DNS,Gateway and more each & everything is well.
    Pls suggest us.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that the same shared folder can be accessed by name, but can’t be accessed be IP address and asks for credentials.
Please try to enable the option below on the device which has shared folder:
Besides, check the Advanced Shring settings of shared folder and confrim that if there is any limitation settings.
    Best Regards,

  • ITunes 11 can't share on "home sharing" network

I just downloaded iTunes 11 and now I can't import songs from a computer on my "home sharing" network.  There is no way to drag a title to import it.  What is my problem?

I was having this problem to. I could see part the contents of the library I wanted to import from. Switched off Home Sharing and Switched it back on again. Then I found two ways to achieve the import.
    1) Turn on View Sidebar, Then you can see the other library in the lefthand pane as in itunes 10. Select the items you want and click on the import button in the righthand bottom cornee.
2)In the interface without the sidebar there is a drop down select box to allow you to select Music, Movies, TV shows etc. At the bottom the shares available to you are shown click on the one you want. Then select the type of content ie Music Movies etc select the items you want and click on the import button at the bottom right.
    Hope this helps

  • How can I delete the guest network from my airport. It was fine until the last update. It says my whole name's guest network which I do not want everyone seeing. There is no guest network setting in my airport utility.

How can I delete the guest network from my airport. It was not showing up until I recently upgraded the airport. It now says my name's guest network and I don't like my name showing on the available network list! I am using a Verizon wireless modem with the wireless feature off.

Open AirPort Utility, go to the Wireless tab and remove the check from the guest network check box.

  • Can I use it for both a backup drive and shared network drive?

Is it possible to use the Time Capsule for both an automatic backup drive for my Mac AND use it as a shared network drive to store my large library of home videos?  If so, does it require partitioning the drive and are there instructions available?  Alternatively, if I store my home videos on its own network drive, will Time Capsule backup this drive too?  If I don't want any external drives tethered to my mac, how would set up the  2 drive scenario, so that home video drive can be shared on the network?
To be specific, I'm looking for a networked drive solution that allows me to do the following:
    1) automatically back up my Mac
    2) act as the primary storage drive for 750GB of the kids home videos (to save room on Mac) [Side question - ]
    3) have the ability to watch the home videos on both my family room Apple TV (is this even possible?) and my kitchen Mac Mini display (would my Mac's iMovie's library be able to include my home video content  that is stored on a network drive, or does it require the content to be  on the Mac hard drive?).
    4) If I use a two drive solution  (time capsule backup and cheaper second drive), I want to be able to have Time Capsule back up the home video content on the second drive.
    5) I do not want any drive tethered to my Mac, only wirelessly connected.  Would the second drive be connected to the Time Capsule?  How would this be set up?
    Many thanks!

basically yes, but i wouldn't recommend it.
If so, does it require partitioning the drive and are there instructions available?
the disk in the TC can't be partitioned in the traditional way. but you can use disk utility to create a "fixed-size" sparse disk image on the TC's disk for use with other data. use the instructions here, just leave out the encryption part.
Alternatively, if I store my home videos on its own network drive, will Time Capsule backup this drive too?
    no.
time machine can not back up from network drives.

consider a NAS that is time machine compatible.
    3) have the ability to watch the home videos on both my family room Apple TV (is this even possible?) and my kitchen Mac Mini display (would my Mac's iMovie's library be able to include my home video content  that is stored on a network drive, or does it require the content to be  on the Mac hard drive?).
it's possible to stream content stored on a TC (or NAS) to TV. using home sharing, your mini would be able to access files in homeshared libraries.
it doesn't matter where the files are stored as long as iTunes knows they are there. in other words, the content needs to be in an iTunes/TV friednly format and in your iTunes library - that doesn't mean the content can't be stored on an external HD, a TC, or a NAS.
    4) If I use a two drive solution  (time capsule backup and cheaper second drive), I want to be able to have Time Capsule back up the home video content on the second drive.
What can Time Machine back up, and where can it put it’s backups?
    5) I do not want any drive tethered to my Mac, only wirelessly connected.
IMO, your best course of action is to get a NAS. if you're interested, i can highly recommend this device by Synology.
Synology NASes play very well with Macs and have excellent backup features on board. given enough space (i have 4x2 TB drives installed) you can store your media files there, use time machine to backup your Macs to it and can use the on-board backup solution to back up the whole shebang to a USB drive connected to the NAS.

  • Why does my laptop no longer connect to our WPA2 shared network drive?

Our Airport Express is set up to give us access to the internet plus access to a shared network drive via a WPA2 key. Suddenly, I can no longer access the shared network drive, even though my wireless internet access is fine, and the Airport Utility is "recognizing" my computer. I am the only PC user in a house of unsympathetic Mac users who are not having any similar problems! Can anyone tell me what I should do to fix this?
    Thanks very much.

I don't remember where I found this, but it did work for me.

  • How do I get the second HD to be a shared network drive??

PowerPC G5 / dual 2Ghz - used as our file server.
    running OS X Server - v.10.3.9
Have one internal HD - 160GB partitioned into two drives (General Access & Archive) in the Public folder of this computer
Appears as Network: Local / G5 Server. When you click the connect button you get a choice of which volume to mount/connect to (ie. General Access; Archive or both)
Running out of space on the drive so I purchased a second 160GB HD. Installed it, formatted it (with DiskUtility), named it, and copied all files from Archive (partition)
The thought is to make this new 160GB drive Archive and to remove the partition from the original 160GB HD and have that be just General Access.
How do I get the second HD to be a shared network drive??
Also can I remove the partition to the first without having to clone it and reformat?

    Roam & Ali B,
    Thanks!!
    Next dumb question(s).
We have a laCie FW external HD that I was using as a back-up drive (temporarily)
I do have some files on it that I have to bring back onto the server to use. I get a admin user&passsword prompt every time I have to copy something back. It usually copies over a locked file that can only be deleted from the Server terminal.
    1. Why isn't this working without the admin prompt? I used DiskUtil to format it before I could use it.
    2. How exactly do I "clone" the current content - its not a simple 'Select All' and drag&drop? Is it going to bring over the partition as well??
    3. Once I have everything on the FW HD, re-boot using it as the System, and re-format the original 160GB HD - will I run into #1.

  • Save a pdf form and stored it in a Shared Network Folder

    Hey Guys,
Is there a way using ASPX and Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES2 to create a form and when the user clicks on the submit button to save a copy of the form and send it over to a Shared Network Folder?
I know adobe accepts JavaScript and FormCalc scripts only but if someone has done something similar to the scenario I explained I'll be deeply appreciate it if you can share some steps or at least show me the light so I can move a little bit further.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Just providing some information in addition to George's reply.
The PDF created by FormsCentral, assuming you are collecting responses online, is configured to enable extended features in Adobe Reader to allow respondents to save the form. To edit the PDF in Adobe Acrobat you must use the File > Save a Copy... menuitem to create a copy of the document that is not Reader-extended.
When you have finished editing the document you should remember to re-configure the PDF for fill-in and save within Adobe Reader.
    Regards,
    Brian
