Name of my macbook

My macbook is secondhand. So it has the name of a former user. The reseller told me that it is not possible to change the name of the computer (as shown in the Finder in the owners map).
Is this really impossible?

It is feasible to change the computer's host name and to add and to remove user accounts (which is what I think you're looking at), though I'd suggest getting yourself a copy of the Snow Leopard client DVD disk (which were around US$30) and reinstall a fresh copy of the software. (If you didn't get a copy of this from the reseller.) This DVD will also provide you with a way to create a complete and recoverable disk backup, too.
The following are the Terminal.app commands used to fetch the current settings:
$ sudo scutil --get ComputerName
$ sudo scutil --get LocalHostName
$ sudo scutil --get HostName
There's a --set option for each of these, if one or more of these show the old host name.
Post the responses from the above, and let us know if it's an existing user account that you're seeing here.
There are other paths to reset this stuff, but definitely look at getting that DVD and doing a wipe and reload; get yourself into a known state here, rather than chasing what the previous user has changed.
You're in the Mac OS X Server forum, and [here is the Mac OS X client set-up forum|http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=263]. FWIW.

How do I change the name of my macbook pro.  My full name is listed on it and I want to change that.  In the upper right hand corner it is correct but all that lists is my login name.

Mr. Pat, there are some people who still try to do that, but you are risking losing all your music, photos, email, etc. It is not for the faint of heart.  This page, albeit published in 2003 by Dr. Smoke, is still pretty valid, IMHO:

It is a grave mistake to rename your Home folder -- changing its file name from johnsmith toJohn, for example -- in an attempt to change the short name for your account when using Mac® OS X.

  • How can i rename or reset my account name on my macbook.

how can i reset my account name on my macbook. my husband set it up for me and it's his name and password that always shows up. i want to delete it and make my own

If there are any documents, pictures or music in the current account, back it up first or use time machine. Then as previously mentioned, crreate a new account in Users and Groups. Ensure that the new account created is the administrator account as well. Once that is done, log out of your husband's account and log in to your own account, then go back to Users and Groups to delete your husband's account. Restore back any files which you have backed up earlier.

  • How do i change the name of my macbook

For a while now ive been using used mabook ( os x 10.6.8) and it always refers the computer as "kyles macbook". (kyle of course being the old owner) and ive searched all over settings and i have no clue how to change it. does anyone else know?

To change the Mac's name, open System Preferences > Sharing, and type the name you want to give to your computer next to "Computer's name".

  • Remove background picture file name from my macbook pro

I have a 17" macbook pro with MAC OS 10.7.5 and was trying to access the desktop pictures to copy the images.  I entered a command that I thought would reveal the hidden picture folder and instead my dispaly now not only shows the image but also its file name across the middle of the screen  (e.g. Library/Desktop/Images/Andromeda Galaxy.JPG).  It doesn't matter if I select another image, the new path name displays right along with the new image.  I don't recall the command I entered but can someone help me undo this?  Any help would be much appreciated!  Thanks in advance!

It's actully the path name I need to delete whichs show now in both my desktop and my dashboard.  The history of my terminal commands in reverse chronological order is as follows:
    Library/Desktop/Pictures
    open/ Library
    admin$ defaults write com.apple.dock desktop-picture-show-debug-text -bool TRUE;killall Dock
    Thanks so much!

  • Computer's name went from MacBook to MacBook(2)

I bought a Macbook aluminum a week ago. In the login window it said :"my name's MacBook". Now, I realized the computer's name is "my name's MacBook(2)"
Any idea why it happened, what are the implications and how to solve it?
    Thanks

    Any idea why it happened
It thought another computer with the same name was hooked up to the LAN.
    what are the implications
None unless its name is used as part of establishing a file sharing connection.
    how to solve it?
Change it from the Sharing pane of System Preferences.

  • Email display name different iphone / macbook iCloud

Since upgrading to Lion / iOS5 and iCloud I have the following oddity.
When I send an email from my macbook or iCloud.com the From appears as Nick B********m which is great and is what I want
When I send an email from my iPhone 4 the From appears as Nicholas B*******m which is not what I want!
My appleId is set up as Nick, in fact I can't find anywhere that I'm setup as Nicholas! Can anybody nudge me into the correct direction to change this.
    Thanks

    Nick,
I have worked with this issue today. The answer has two steps.
    1) Login to appleid.apple.com and get your name correct there.
    2) Delete that icloud account from your phone and add it back after a small delay.
It seems that the "display name" for email _sent from an ipad or iphone_ using _a me.com or mac.com_ account is pulled from the  appleid profile.
    AND
changes made to the appleid profile don't get reflected on the iphone or ipad until the account has been deleted from the device and added again.
    Good Luck,

  • Changing the Public Folder name or owner's name of a MacBook running 10.5

    Hi
Does anyone know how or if, I can change the name of my Public Folder or alternatively change my MacBook's owner name?
It seems crazy that after years of releasing software Apple would default a folder name to the full name of the owner with no shortname option and not warn you that the name you use would become a long winded folder name.
    Thanks
    John

    Hi,
To change the name of your computer just open System Preferences from the Applications folder and click on sharing.
Click on the lock in the bottom left corner of the window if it is locked. At the top of the window there is a box with the computer name in it, just change this to what you want.
I would advise against changing the name of the Public folder but if you don't want it to be viewable on the local network click on it and press command + i, under the general tab you can untick the shared folder option. You can then create another folder within your home directory (name it anything you want) and bring up the get info window and select the shared folder option.
    Hope this helps

  • How do I Change the Name of My MacBook and Why was it Changed after the Upgrade to Yosemite?

    Hi everyone,
I upgraded my MacBook Air (2012) to Yosemite a few months back and it changed the name of my Mac from "Alan's MacBook" to "Alan MacBook Air (2)." I simply want to know how to change it back to the original name. Also, why was it changed in the first place after my upgrade to Yosemite?
    Thank you so much!!!
    Alan

This was a common bug in Yosemite. Follow dwb's instructions but also restart your router. Make sure you're running OS X 10.10.2 since it was supposed to have been addressed with that update.
I have heard allegations regarding simultaneous use of both Wi-Fi and Ethernet (or equivalent adapter, considering it's a MBA) but can find no justification for them, and I never personally observed any correlation to it. It's perfectly acceptable to use both.

  • How can I change the user name on a macbook?

I don't mean the accounts, but the actual name of the user of the macbook.
ex. where it says "John Smith's Macbook".

There should be something called "System Preferences" and then "accounts" go to that. There you can change it.

    3.  Point iTunes to the new location with iTunes Preferences>Advanced>Change media location
Hope this helps.  If you need more information about iTunes, you might want to post your questions at the iTunes forum.
