Name Resolution problem

I have ultra 5 machine. I have configured resolv.conf . My nslookup is working. But I cannot use the basic utilities with resolved names such as ping, telnet, rlogin etc
I have reinstalled os with solaris 5.7 yet the things are same.
Help required

I'm having a similar problem... Except that my DNS isn't working at all...
I'm running a Windows 2000 server at home, a Linux server and now the Solaris server...
I have static IP addresses setup in DNS through my ISP, and NSLOOKUP is working fine from my other boxes...
During the initial installation, my ethernet card was recognized by the system (I bought the card specifically, because it was listed in the hardware compatibility list...), and I loaded the correct IP address, Subnet Mask and DNS server information...
However, during the installation, the system cannot perform the NSLOOKUP, and it UN-configures DNS...
After the installation completes, the system reboots...
When the system attempts to come up the first time, after the initial installation, if fails to open some type of web interface, and the system fails to start...
Upon rebooting again, the system does come up, but again, DNS entries have been removed from /etc/resolv.conf...
Mind you, I haven't tried to edit the /etc/nsswitch.conf file yet... I'll do that tonight, after getting home...

  • How can I fix local name resolution problems

I have a Macbook Pro Retina running 10.8.4. One thing I've always had problems with is resolving my local names.
When connected via wifi, I can ping localhost just fine. However my computer's name is finney. And I cannot ping finney. However I can ping finney.local. Other machines on my network can also ping finney.local. I've always been able to live with this inconvenience 'till now. This macbook needs to run a local service that uses the value returned from hostname -s as the name of the machine and then tries to connect with that name.
In System Preferences -> Network -> wifi -> TCP/IP I've set my DHCP client ID to finney.local. So the hostname command returns finney.local and hostname -s returns finney. I can't believe I've spent so much time trying to figure a way around this.
My preferred options would be to figure out how to make it so I can ping this computer using its name finney. My DHCP server at home is a wifi router, through which I can find no option to specify a name for my macbook.
My second choice would be to figure out how to get hostname -s to return finney.local. At least if I could do that then my rabbitmq instance would be able to startup.
I'd be much appreciative if someone could help with some suggestions on how to get around these problems.
    Thanks in advance,
    Derek

    Wow, that did the trick.
This has been a problem I never knew the solution to ever since I swithced to OSX 4 years ago.
    Much thanks!

  • Connecting from a remote computer / name resolution issues

My work has two SQL Server 2005 databases, one installed on a Windows XP machine (running some equipment) and one installed on a Windows 7 machine (backing up the files from the XP instance).  Both computers run only the default instance.  I had
replication set up and functioning (data being created on the XP maching was being replicated to the Win 7 machine) for the last three weeks in July.  I recently noticed that the replication is no longer working (the files were no longer being copied),
and when I tried to check the status I got an error about named pipes, or, if I disabled named pipes "tcp provider error 0 no such host is known".
At the time I found the replication problem, I could connect to both databases through SSMS on the Windows 7 machine.  On the XP machine, I could use SSMS to browse to the Win 7 instance but SSMS would not connect to the Win 7 instance by name (same
errors about no such host known); the connection does go through by IP address.  I can ping from the Win 7 machine to the XP machine both by IP address and by name.  I could ping from the XP machine to the Win 7 machine by IP address but NOT by name.
I tried running the workgroup wizard on the XP machine, thinking this might help with the name resolution problem.  In the wizard, I changed the workgroup name to a new name.  I changed the workgroup name on the Win 7 machine to match.
This change did not affect the ping status - I can still ping by both name and IP address from the Win 7 machine, and still only the IP address works from the XP machine.  However, now SSMS on the Win 7 machine no longer sees the XP machine!  Trying
to log in with either the machine name and the IP address, I now get a "timeout expired" message, and the SSMS login browser does not show the XP machine on the network.
Any pointers on where to look for the cause of this problem would be very welcome.

There was some problem (bug?) with the remote connections flag on the Win 7 server.  Someone had posted in the comments to a technet article that unchecking the remote connections box, restarting the server, then re-checking it helped them.  I
tried it, and that fixed the problem with the Win 7 machine being unable to see the XP machine.
Olaf's suggestion about the Hosts file fixed the problem with the XP machine having to use the IP address - now it can connect by name as well.
Now I just have left the problem of a broken subscription to my replication, but that's a separate issue so I'll consider this thread closed.  Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions.

  • Enabling Firewall breaks Bonjour name resolution (and other problems)

Hi there, I thought I had a simple setup but trying to enable VPN & Firewall has shown me there are some issues I need help with:
Setup: MacOS X Server 10.5.8 on MacPro
    - Machine is Mobile Account Server for 5 other machines connected to network
    - DHCP is obtained from Router in 10.1.10.x range. Server hardcodes its IP in that range (outside of DHCP addressable range)
    - Services running are: AFP, Open Directory, SMB, Software Update
    - All client workstations connect to server using "servername.local"
This has all been working fine. However over the weekend I tried enabling VPN as we have a public IP address we can use. VPN works fine except:
    a) Plugging an additional ethernet cable into port 2, and configuring that port to have the external "public" IP information caused the "license in use issue" that has been reported here (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9958588&tstart=0) so I had to use the solution of duplicating the existing ethernet config and entering the additional external IP to run both off the same port.
    b) I can't get L2TP working, but I can get P2PP. Seems like other people are having similar issues (http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=9704644)
But anyway, so I have P2PP VPN working and without a firewall previous functionality hasn't been impacted. Now of course, I'd be silly to leave this machine with the Firewall turned off as it is now a sitting duck out on the inter-tubes.
I thus enabled the Firewall service with these settings:
    - Any service: Allow only traffic from "any" to these ports: (I enabled the ports for P2PP and L2TP)
    - 10-net: Allow all traffic from "10-net"
This I assume would restrict access from the external interface, but let all internal subnet communication be unrestricted (like it was before I enabled the firewall). However this doesn't seem to be the case. I noticed that simple non-VPN connections to AFP service took a long time to happen using "afp://servername.local", several minutes before the authentication dialog appeared.
Furthermore if I brought up "Software Update" on a managed client set to pull from "servername.local:8088", the connection would fail.
If I disabled the firewall service, the slowdown and local Software Update would work fine.
But if I try setting: "Allow all traffic from 'any'" on the Firewall (which should be almost like turning it of) it doesn't have a positive effect and slowdown of name resolution and failure to connect to local software update still occurred.
Is there something in the Firewall being enabled that breaks Bonjour name resolution? Anyway to enable the Firewall and still keep Bonjour .local name resolution? Does this problem have anything to do with issue (a) we have to work-around?
    Thanks for any recommendations,
    Matt

  • XSD Resolution problem - Unable to load Translation schemas

    Hi,
I've run into a very strange kind of problem (not to say some are less strange then others). Let me explain the context of the situation.
I've got a BPEL process calling two plsql packages on ORA database, one Java web service running on the same weblogic server and couple of other services (eg. notification services, jdbc select/insert, etc.). There is no problem with the last listed, but definitely something wrong with the web service and the plsql callouts.
When I deploy the BPEL process and execute it, the first two instances always fail. The same happens when I restart the server, the errors are repeated after a certain period as well (for example over night). The process always fails EXACTLY TWICE, before running normally. Every other instance executed after the two initial failures runs WITHOUT the following error.
I mentioned there are two plsql callouts in the process, earlier the first instance failed on the second one and the second instance failed on the first. Now, it mostly fails on the second callout. I've made no significant changes in the code. Perhaps the strangest thing about this is that it fails when invoking the plsql package but the error concerns xsd definitions of the web service that plays no role at this stage.
All my services are correctly deployed, I deleted all interface definitions from MDS repository and redeployed SOA bundle again before installing each service.
I think it has something to do with generated xsd definitions by the java web service (it's the http://localhost:8001/S50040PrenosSouboruBS/PrenosSouboruBSSOAP11BindingPort?xsd=1 and http://localhost:8001/S50040PrenosSouboruBS/PrenosSouboruBSSOAP11BindingPort?xsd=2 from following stack trace), but I can't figure out what exactly is wrong with them.
Anybody come accross a similar error? Thanks for tips, I've run out of ideas.

I had similar issue, when i deployed composite using Jdeveloper. The problem was with my adf-config.xml pointing to dev server and all my references in my composite.xml referring to test server.
I changed property of 'oracle.mds.persistence.stores.db.DBMetadataStore' in adf-config.xml to test server. After adf-config.xml change in Jdev my compilation went smooth.
Note: If above changes doesn't work, try restarting JDeveloper, sometimes the changes in adf-config.xml is not getting effect immediately.

  • Remote LAN Name Resolution on VPN not working after upgrading to iOS8

Has anyone come across the problem since upgrading to iOS8 where remote LAN name resolution does not work when connected to the remote LAN with VPN.  Everything worked fine on iOS7 and continues to work okay on devices that have not been upgraded.
If I'm connected with WiFi on the local network, I am able to resolve the FQDN to a local IP address.  The problem arises when I'm away from the office, on either LTE or another WiFi and I start a VPN connection to the office.  The VPN connects without any problems.  If I try to connect to a desktop with the FQDN it never connects.  I will work if I connect with the IP address.  If I try to do an nslookup of the FQDN, I don't get a response.  I am however able to get a response when performing an nslookup for google.com.
The VPN we are using is PPTP to a Windows network.

  • Xorg nvidia resolution problems with KDE

I just installed Arch 2008.04-RC last night.  I configured xorg.conf using nvidia with the screen resolution set to "1440x900" which worked in both the X Windows and KDE 3.5.9.
I was trying to get xine working with Amarok.  At one point, I deleted ~/.xine and xinirtc to force itself to reset. I then rebooted at which point I noticed the resolution set only at "640x400" in KDE.  I checked the Display Settings and that was the maximum resolution I could choose.  I then switched to the vesa drivers which allowed a maximum resolution of "1024x768".
I removed xorg and nvidia and reinstalled.  I can no longer get a resolution of "1440x900" resolution for my Viewsonic VA1926v flat screen monitor.  I read on the xorg log that
I am using the Nvidia GeForce 7300 GT video graphics card.  uname -r:  2.6.25-ARCH
From /var/log/Xorg.0.log I get the following information when I am using vesa:
    (II) VESA(0): Total Memory: 4096 64KB banks (262144kB)
(II) VESA(0): Generic Monitor: Using hsync range of 30.00-82.00 kHz

I am at a loss at trying to fix this one.  Something similar happened when I was running Gentoo on this same desktop back in April.  I also have the same low resolution problem when using Sabayon.
Any help here would be much appreciated :-)

I thought these frequencies were a bit low too.  My manual said there were the frequencies.  I checked online and it said the same.  I need to do more research on it.
I did manage to get my 1440x900 resolution back using the open source nv drivers.  I had to do the same with Gentoo and Linux Mint in the past.  Everytime I used the nvidia drivers, my monitor returns to the 640x400 resolution and I noticed the only way to avoid it was to use nv.  I do not play games online or use Compiz so it does not bother me.
    Thanks.

  • Can't start Peer Name Resolution Protocol

I can't start the service 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol' which is required for HomeGroups.
There are 3 Peer services on my machine. One is running (Peer Networking Identity Manager). The other one (Peer Networking Grouping) is not because it depends on 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol' which fails to start.
Both Homegroup services are started and I have IPV6 enabled on my NIC and in my LAN properties.
    The event log has this:
'The Peer Name Resolution Protocol cloud did not start because the creation of the default identity failed with error code: 0x80630801.'
Using the Event ID web search it leads me to this:
Event ID 102 — PNRP Protocol
I tried what they suggested (it's for Vista) but to no avail.  Perhaps some Permission got borked.  Is there a way to recreate the RSA folder and sub-folders with correct Permissions or perhaps it's some other type of problem?
I do notice I have a lot of entries in "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys"
Any help in getting this Service started will be appreciated.

    Hi,
This issue can occur by corrupted PNRP service. You can perform the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
    1. Please download the correct Network Connection registry file from the link below:
    http://cid-6df3bca839e981ef.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/PRNP.txt
    2. There will be the PRNP.txt file. Please right click it and rename it to PRNP.reg file.
    3. Double click the PRNP.reg file and click Yes to import the file.
Note: To avoid unexpected situation, please back up the computer registry before importing the registry file.
    4. Then, please verify the Peer Name Resolution Protocol service and other failure service again.
    a. Click "Start", go to run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in the open box and press Enter.
Note: If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
    b. Right click the "Peer Name Resolution Protocol" service and choose Properties.
    c. Click on the "Log On" tab, please ensure the option "Local System account" is selected and the option "Allow service to interact with desktop" is unchecked.
    d. Click on the "General" tab; make sure the "Startup Type" is "Automatic". Then please click the button "Stop" under "Service Status" to stop the service.
    e. Then please click the button "Start" under "Service Status" to start the service.
    f. Click OK.
    What's the result?
If the issue persists, please also perform the suggestions from the following article.

  • Startx low resolution problem

I normally use a graphical login manager and when I log into dwm, there's no resolution problems. Although I want a little more customization with my session so I can have startup scripts and such, so I setup an xinitrc and ctrl+alt+F2, user, password, startx. From here I get everything I put in my xinitrc, but I do not get my correct monitor resolution (1920x1080). Is there any quick and easy fix to this?

    Hi Fer!
Thanks for your tip about trying a different user - it didn't work, but it got me thinking
I tried my daughter's new MB Pro with ML, and it worked flawlessly. So, thoroughly ****** off, I wasn't going to give up easily - I got out my Wireshark and started digging. After a few hours I came up with several handy tips, a couple of which fixed my problems. Here they are, copied from the blog I keep (to remember stuff like this). With any luck, they will save others some of the time we wasted.
Thanks again for your help and inspiration!
I’ve been incredibly frustrated by how poorly DNS resolves since upgrading first to Lion, then later to Mountain Lion (on a new machine, but migrating my old files). The impact of this was particularly bad connecting to SMB/CIFS/Samba shares – some would mount after several minutes, others not at all.
Early on it became clear the problems were related to my router (DDWRT) not supporting IPv6 but then neither does my ISP. Here are a few things to try:
    DNS Resolver Order
Normally /etc/hosts is first in line for DNS resolution. But it seems improper line termination, presumably a carriage return/linefeed instead of just a linefeed, causes all sorts of problems. Many posts describe ways to force reloading of the hosts file, but the root cause seems to be improper line termination. Always make sure you use a Unix compatible editor.
To check the order resolvers are called:
    scutil --dns
    /etc/hosts Entries
These two were the main source of my problems:
    1. My host has multiple names – these must all be present, and fully qualified:
    127.0.0.1 hosta hosta.foo.com 127.0.0.1 hostb hostb.foo.com
    2. All localhost entries must have ::1 entries too, or OS X will send IPv6 requests to resolve them externally. And this despite IPv6 being disabled on the interface!
    ::1 hosta hosta.foo.com ::1 hostb hostb.foo.com
Turn off IPv6 in Network Preferences
Go to System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> TCP. In the Configure IPv6 list, you may have an “Off” option. If so, select it. If not, see next tip.
    Turn off IPv6 from Terminal
    List available network services:
    networksetup -listallnetworkservices
Turn off IPv6 on chosen device (name from above list):
    networksetup -setv6off your_device_name (i.e. Wi-Fi, Ethernet)
Now the Configure IPv6 list  for that device will show “Off”  (see previous tip).
    MobileMe Remnants
Apparently older OS X installations migrated to newer releases may still have hooks to no-longer existant MobileMe servers. Many users report that removing these greatly speeds up SMB connection. The following removes those references if present and are harmless if not.

  • Wsimport - how to do auto name resolution?

    Hi,
Is there any way to tell wsimport command to automatically resolve naming conflicts.
apache cxf supports it for its wsdl2java. Is there something similar for wsimport.
My problem is that my wsdl has schemas with name like CurrencyType, currencyType, currency_type.
This schema is provided by an external system.
When I use wsimport to generate java files it gives naming conflicts.
I was successfully able to generate the java files after using an external customization file.
But there are many such schemas and we want to avoid the headache of maintaining the customization files.
I couldnot fine any way to do auto name resolution using wsimport the way it is supported by cxf.
    thanks,
    Shrikant

  • Might be Name Resolving Problem with Tree-Name

I have no clue, if this the correct forum, but since the biggest changes happened in our dns-dhcp-setup before the problem started, I will give it a chance here.
We have a Netware-6.0-sp5-Server running dhcpsrvr.nlm and named.nlm. We moved the whole lan for some future changes from 192.168.x.x to 172.16.x.x and since then have some W2K-workstations with the Novell-Client have problems to login to the server.
After booting the workstation from the advanced options of the Novell-Client you can browse to tree, where the single tree is shown. But when trying to browse the context one received the message "Cannot access tree.". Same happens when trying to browse to the server. You can browse context and server, though, when the ip-address is entered in the tree-field. When login is started the error-message pops up: "The tree or server cannot be found. Choose a different tree or server." When trying after a few minutes (did not stop, make it 5 to 10 minutes) login and browsing works fine.
In dhcp the options 6, 78, 79 (mandatory), 85, 86, 87 are populated with the correct values. "display slpda" on the server-console looks fine and fits with "slpinfo /all" on the workstation-console. After digging through the forums and the knowledgebase I have some indications that the name-resolution of the tree might not work.
When looking through the named-debug-screen there scroll some messages like looking for "context.treename.domainname.tld" i.e., which does not look perfect to me either.
Any help or hint is highly appreciated.
    Sincerely
    Karl

    The services list a "service:bindery.novell:///servername".
Any idea about this or suggestion how to test it out any further?
    Sincerely

Well, you need to know if those 12 services contain all you need, e.g
all servers. Did it list any "bindery.novell" services? Those are the
    crucial ones.

  • Faster apple/akamai name resolution?

A lot of Apple's IP addressing is "virtual" through Akamai -- and I spend a lot of time staring at my browser's status bar "looking up [insert apple or akamai name here]".
I've tried various DNS servers, but wonder if there is some way to make these Apple addresses resolve faster.
Once the names resolve, things load fast. It's the name resolution that takes so long on Apple sites.
Any tips to speed this up? I'm on DSL. Thanks!

    >Anyone else notice that Apple sites take longer to resolve?
Not here. Akamai ave a very good reputation in DNS and content delivery land, so I think it's unlikely to be their problem.
Is it only Akamai-hosted sites that exhibit this slowdown? or do other sites do it too?
My guess would be that it's the DNS server you're using. Using a different DNS server (or running your own) is likely to be the best solution.
You can test this theory using dig, which will tell you how long a query took to perform:
    localhost: $ dig www.apple.com

Note the 'Query time:' line towards the end (10 milliseconds in this example). Try digging a few different sites and see how the query time varies.

  • EHP1 Upgarde Monitor screen resolution problem in a support message

    Hi Experts,
We have recently upgraded our Solution manager to EHP1, iam facing a screen resolution problem with 15 inch monitors.
Our key users have 15 inch monitors to their system and when they try to reply a support message under transaction data-> Overview tab -> reply it is showing only one line for them , due to which they are unable to enter the complete data in it.
How ever We have found that this does not occur with 17 inc monitors as the required screen resoution 1280* 1024 is possible due to bigger size of the monitor.
can any one suggest how to make the overview tab visible completely with small resolution monitors.
    Thanks
