Named Destinations not Working in PDF

We have book files that contain several chapters and a glossary. We created numerous named destinations (specify named destination/jump to named destination) throughout the FM files. If we check the links in the FM files, they work fine (i.e. the linked word jumps to the correct spot). However once we PDF, it loses some (not all) of those links. Anyone have any suggestions for figuring out why or fixing the issue? To PDF, we print a PS file then distill it. We are using FM 10. There appears to be no rhyme or reason for which words work and which words don't. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

FM will always have at least two versions of the maker.ini on your system. The first version is in the default FM installation folder. The other is each of the Users areas. The one(s) in the Users area contain your specific settings to the FM environment. So it looks like your display settings are set properly in FM.
It really helps seeing the FM & PDF versions.
What specific version of the Palatino TTF font are you using (mine is the 5.00 as shown in the previous reply)?
In your FM paragraph designer, you seem to be using a Justified setting. What are your settings that you have in the Advanced properties of the paragraph designer for tthe Word Spacing options? I've tried duplicating your example (using a wid range of settings), but I don't seem to have any spill over issues:
In your example, it looks like only the word-spacings are messing up. The individual word lengths look to be correct when compared ot the FM file. Did you use any special spaces (i.e. non-breaking, numeric, etc.) between any of the words. (Turn on your View > Text Symbols in FM)? Are you using any special character tag, the default Emphasis tag or did you manually apply Italic (or footnote superscipt formatting) in the paragraphs that shoot over the margins?
What PDF joboptions did you use for creating the PDF?
Are you using the AdobePDF printer instance for creating the PDFs?
In Acrobat, have you checked to see if you actually have the Palatino Linotype being used in the PDF document? (Use either the File > Properties... and then look at the Font tab or use the Edit Object tool, click on the wonky text area and the right-click to get the Proprties context menu and look at the Text tab).

  • Named destination not working in Firefox 3.6.3, other browsers are ok

I've added several named destinations to a PDF.  Links to the named destinations within the PDF are working correctly in IE8, Safari and Chrome, but not Firefox 3.6.3.  (PC/Windows 7)
With Firefox all the links to named destinations take you to the first page of the PDF instead of to the named destination within the PDF. I've tried changing the format of the links (a href="http://www.anysite.com/mypdf.pdf#location1") instead of (a href="http://www.anysite.com/mypdf.pdf#nameddest=location1").  No success with Firefox.  Other browsers are fine.
I'd be interested if anyone else has had a similar issue and whether there are any successful workarounds/solutions.
    Thanks a bunch.

The PDF contaning the named destinations was created with Acrobat 9.3.2 Professional.
Since the links to the named destinations are working fine with IE, Chrome and Safari, I'd tend to think this is a Firefox issue, but welcome other ideas.

  • Hyperlink with tracking applied does not work in PDF

We use lots of web addresses in our advertising and generally the web addresses automatically convert to hyperlinks when we distill the files and make PDFs. Recently we've had two instances where someone applied tracking or justification to the line of text containing the url to make it spread across the page. When we make our PDF the url is not clickable. Is there anyway around this? We tried actually creating a hyperlink manually in InDesign by using the Hyperlinks panel and entering the address, but that didn't work either.

    Peter,
We'll look into that. We already do two separate PDFs for print and web, but
we are distilling both right now. Wouldn't be too much of a problem to
change to exporting the web version I don't think.
I did a test, just curious, is there a way to keep it from putting a black
box around the link on the PDF?
Thanks for your help! We appreciate it!

Subject: Hyperlink with tracking applied does not work in PDF
Distilled PDF uses Postscript which does not support hyperlinks and
interactivity. To make your hyperlinks in ID you'll need to export and check
the Include Hyperlinks and Include Interactiviity boxes.
Your printer doesn't need hyperlinks because they don't work on a printed
page. The requirements for print and interactive PDF are quite different, and
you may find you need to make two versions.

  • Named Anchors not working in Safari

Has anyone found a work around for named anchors not working in Safari?
    For example:
    <http://www.macbenimble.com/links.html#browsers>
Would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any info re this?
    hollie

That particular page fails the w3c validator: "This page is not Valid XHTML 1.0 Transitional!" Safari is one of the least forgiving of browsers for code that is not correctly written to standards. You might want to put your pages through the validator and look at the list of generated errors.
Named anchors do work in Safari, for example is this web site faq.

  • InDesign CC book bookmarks not working in PDF

    Hi
This is less a question and more an answer to a problem I was having that I found an answer to elsewhere so I thought I'd post it here for others.
I have a 580 book in InDesign CC with a TOC and automatic bookmarks for all the chapters and subsections across the book's 10 documents. The bookmarks work perfectly in InDesign but when I exported to PDF (interactive, with bookmarks included) only the bookmarks within the first document worked. All the others were listed but went to the first page, not their correct page.
I found this link which gave me the answer: http://forum.rpg.net/archive/index.php/t-319074.html
Basically, don't mess with the TOC after it has been created.
I had made a few tweaks to the TOC after creation, such as deleting an extra tab character, applying character styles, inserting column breaks.
Having read the suggestion at the link above, I fixed the extra tab and a couple of other minor text edits at the source paragraphs, tweaked my TOC paragraph styles to adjust spacing and recreated the TOC. It exported perfectly - working bookmarks across the whole book. So then I went back and did a bit of experimenting and found that I could apply colour to the TOC text by directly applying swatches to selected text and it still worked. To get rid of entries that I didn't want in my TOC and to get column breaks where I wanted them, I changed my text frame to single column and threaded multiple single-column frames of varying height on and off my page. This also exported perfectly. I didn't try applying character styles or making any edits to the text.
    Hope you find this useful.

In my Acrobat bookmarks are visible but doesn´t seem to take you anywhere... TOC seems to work as it should. InDesign makes those bookmarks point to a hyperlink destination, not to a page. And that named destination get it´s name from document name. You have a special character (second character) in your document name. May be it causes some troubles?

  • Having trouble getting named destinations to work

I have been trying to add named destinations to a PDF so that I can navigate a viewer to a particular place in a document via a URL such as http://mysite.com/mypdf.pdf#nameddest=blah.
This is not working at all. The URL simply brings them to the beginning of the document. The named destinations feature of Acrobat is really not very complicated. My named destination is clearly there in the document. What could be preventing this from working?
    Thanks

The embed code looks right. It must be something wrong with your JS/CSS on the page. Almost seems like you have something transparent on top of the form or something. I'm not a JS/CSS/HTML expert so I can't help anymore than that...

  • Xrefs not working in PDF

    Hi All,
Can anyone help. I have created a table within each chapter of my book, I have used this table as a navigation bar which sits on every right master page and linked each chapter by xref to the heading of each chapter, this has worked fine previously with no problems, however I have created a new manual using an existing manual (just changed the footers etc), but unfortunately there are four out of the eight chapaters that when PDF'd to not work (the hyperlink does not seem to exist). I cannot get my head round this why some work on others do not. Any ideas?
    Johann

When creating the PS/PDF, do you have "Create Named Destinations for All Paragraphs" turned on? (PDF Setup, Links tab) turned on
Having this setting turned on typically helps prevent random bad links in the PDF (assuming that the cross references are valid in FrameMaker).

  • CS4 TOC bookmarks not working in pdf´s

    Hi

  • Impossible (?) to link to Named Destination/Bookmark in Local PDF from PDF?

Goal: Very simple... in a PDF, click on a link that (a) opens a second PDF on local drive, and (b) navigates to a named destination or bookmark in that second PDF... just like our normal everyday HTML links work, and even Word itself does this.
According to PDF Open Parameters, trial and error with Acrobat (X) itself, and all other articles I've found, this can only be done IF the second PDF is not local but accessed through an HTTP URL on a server elsewhere.
Yet I find this very hard to believe, and think I'm missing something obvious. Any suggestions?
    Thanx.

Actually, it can be done, but it's not very intuitive.
When you create your link and the Action window appears, select "Go to a
page view". Now a floating window opens that lets you set the link. The
tricky bit is that you can now open a different file and set the link there.
If you want to set it to a named destination you need to open that panel and
    double-click on that destination.
Linking to a bookmark is not possible, only with a custom-made script.

  • TOC link with a subscript character does not work in PDF

    Hi,
has anyone come across with this? A heading has a subscript character and when you generate a PDF, the TOC page has no link. Other TOC heading links work out just fine, but all these that have subscript, these do not.
I have used Save As PDF and selected even create named destinations for all Paragraphs. Usually the TOC works fine even if that is not selected. A link with subscript does not work in either case.
I appreciate any help with this, thanks

    > The link is always terminated before any change in the character format. That's not a bug.
In user-authored manually-created hypertext links, sure. And in that case, we know that we have to re-apply the Marker to the various fragments of the desired text. I would not expect this behavior for a generated file where we have limited control over the auto-tagging.
    > Therefore if you have subscript or superscript applied, the link starts at the beginning of the paragraph and ends before the character format change (sub-/superscript).
It's not just format changes in body <$paratext> that break this. If you so much as apply a different format to the elements on the TOC Reference Page TOC (such as making the page number a different font), that breaks the HT of the page number in the PDF.
    > As far as I know Rick Quatro offers a FrameScript script for this problem.
Well, Adobe might consider this to be an Enhancement Request item, but I consider it to be a defect.
Is there anyone who would object if the TOC entries had functional full-string HT links by default? If so, Adobe could fix the problem, and have an Update tickbox to revert to legacy broken behavior.
In any case, the Unicode solution is not really a "work-around", even though I put it that way. For anything where Unicode has a glyph that you would otherwise implement as FrameRoman with a Character Format, use Unicode.

  • Hyperlinks not working in PDF from ID

    Hi folks:
I am currently creating a file in InDesign (CC 2014) and attempting to export it to a pdf. When I do export it, only 6 out of 15 hyperlinks work in PDF.  The links that work AND do not work are both URLs and Emails.  In ID all links function in the Hyperlinks panel. I have unclicked "Shared Hyperlinks Destination" for all links. It is not that the links are broken, it is that in the PDF version, half of the links are not reading that a hyperlink is attached.
Any troubleshooting ideas are greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely,
    Jen

When you export with File > Export > Adobe PDF (Print), you need to check Hyperlinks at the bottom (see below). Hyperlinks are not included by default:

  • Web address with hyphen will not work in PDF

    CS 4; ID 6.0.6
    OSX 10.5.8
In ID, I create web links by selecting a url and then selecting New Hyperlink From URL. The new link is a Shared Destination by default with the web address as was selected. These links work fine when exported to PDF.
When I use the same process on a url with a hyphen (part of the address and not a line break), the resulting Shared link will not work when exported to PDF. The newly created link in this case always begins with file:///Users/.
What is it about the hypen that messes up the process? I work in a bilingual government so we have a lot of urls with hyphens in them. For example: www.cga-nb.org.
    Thanks.
