Names of other networks

how do i get rid of the names of other networks in my area in the drop down menu of airport?

I have two that show up but don't exist; how do you get rid of them? Seriously, they don't exist; I have only one Network and the others were set up some time ago while trialing a router.

I just want to change the name of my network. no other settings?

We can likely help, but we do not know what device that you are asking about....or....what version of AirPort Utility that you have on your computer.
(Normally, we would know things like this, but our crystal ball is broken).

  • Cannot paste network name into join other network dialog

I have a 15" G4 Powerbook running Leopard. I often need to join closed networks by typing in their names and passwords into the join other network dialog box, but it never allows me to copy and paste the names or passwords. This can be very irritating for long network names and random passwords. Has anyone else experienced this?

I managed to change the name, but now, when I go into Airport Utility, the dot next to Airport express is blinking orange (Internet is green).
Next to the Network name is the number 2 on a red circle. What does this "2" mean?
    The internet still works, though.
Light on Airport Express base station is green.
The status says: no DNS servers.

  • How can I delete the guest network from my airport. It was fine until the last update. It says my whole name's guest network which I do not want everyone seeing. There is no guest network setting in my airport utility.

How can I delete the guest network from my airport. It was not showing up until I recently upgraded the airport. It now says my name's guest network and I don't like my name showing on the available network list! I am using a Verizon wireless modem with the wireless feature off.

Open AirPort Utility, go to the Wireless tab and remove the check from the guest network check box.

  • Cannot resolve host names on local network

It is a local network with router, few Windows computers with shared drives and one Mac.
Windows shares appear correctly in SHARED and can be used without any problems, like iTunes and iPhoto libraries are on those shared drives and work properly, even if ip address of those computers would change.
BUT - if I am trying to use VNC and connect to hostname:port, it says that server is not specified. If I try to ping hostname it says Unknown host.
At the same time, similar ping from Windows computer work without any problems.
It could be possible that router does not support something standard and communicates with Windows using something windows-specific, but what confuses me is that I can see computer names resolved in the finder already! Also, as I said iTunes and iPhoto can work with shared files on dynamic ip's which would be not possible if host names would be not resolved.
    Thanks.

Domain Name Resolution for local IP addresses require a Local DNS server running on your network.
Bonjour names will resolve without a Local DNS server. So this is why iTunes and iPhoto works as they use bonjour technology.
A bonjour name ends in .local so in your macs sharing preferences you give the mac a name of imac its bonjour address is imac.local
Other than that you are best giving your devices fixed IP address and adding there hostnames to your hosts file.
the contents of /etc/hosts on your mac would look like
    # Host Database
    # localhost is used to configure the loopback interface
    # when the system is booting. Do not change this entry.
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    255.255.255.255 broadcasthost
    ::1 localhost
    fe80::1%lo0 localhost
so at the above that you could add for example
    192.168.1.5 mypc
    192.168.1.6 myprinter
Then you could ping 192.168.1.5 by
    ping mypc
So would have to add these entries to each hosts file on every computer on your lan.
Or you could setup a local dns server and give each computer on your LAN a fully qualified domain name.

A particular network user can't login to a mac in a classrom but other network users can. Then the network user can login to other identical macs in same classroom. Anyone seen this before? It has happen twice. Two different teachers in two different classrooms entering the correct user name and passwords and computer won't allow them to login. Then they try in different computers in same classroom and have no problem login.

Yes. I can login with a test user. And any other network user can login as well to this particular mac. Actually the mac has bootcamp and boots into either mac or windows. The same user entering the same login username and password can login into the windows side, but not the mac side.
I had this same issue last semester in another classroom, another mac and a different teacher. This summer I reformatted and imaged that mac and I asked that teacher to login today to that reimagened mac and she had no problem today doing so.

Have new Airport Extreme conneted via ethernet cable from HughesNet Gen4 modem. Using NetGear WN3500RP extender. NetGear asks for different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Most of what I have read indicates extender should have same name as main network? How is it best to configure with the Airport Extreme router 802.11ac?

Different names for the 2.4 and 5 GHz networks are optional, but can be convenient for you to distinguish one from another. It's up to you.

  • Changed internal shared drive name, but other Macs see it as an old name

    Hi evryone,
I have Mac Pro, and 2 Mac minis. Just updated all to 10.9.
This MP has a 2nd drive that sherd on my network. I just cahnged this internal drive name, but other 2 Mac minis still only see the old name.
Am I missing something? I tried many things, but it shows up with the old name.
    Please advise.
    Thank you!

How did you change its name, if you just changed it on the desktop it may not be enough. I found this article on changing the Macintosh HD name but it will be the same way for other disks.

  • Associating my CompactRIO to a computer/device name on the network

    Hello,
I have a network connecting a router, several computers and a CompactRIO, configured to use DHCP. Therefore the CompactRIO IP address may change. On the computers I will be using a program that I didn't write, that communicates with the CompactRIO (I wrote the CompactRIO side of the code myself). The program can find the CompactRIO either using an IP address, or a computer name, because it's been designed to work from computer to computer. Unfortunately, since I'm using DHCP I cannot set it to use a fixed address.
Therefore, I would like to install a driver, or run a piece of software, or configure my CompactRIO such that it appears as a computer or device wih a name on the network. A name visible in "Network Places" under Windows for instance.
I should mention that installing a DNS server might work, but is really a last resort option for me.
    Any suggestion?

    Hello Proengin,
First of all don't hesitate next time to post your message on Real-Time Measurement and Control . It will be maybe easier to get an answer.
However, as I understand you're obtaining your cRIO IP address from a DHCP server automatically. Therefore, it's normal that the address isn't fixed. Indeed, each time you'll boot your target, the server will alllocate an IP adress that might be different than the adress previously assigned.
Concerning the second part, you won't be able to make your cRIO appearing as a computer or a device on the network because it's a real-time target and not a Windows device for example.
With real-time targets such as cRIO (or sbRIO, PXI RT,...) you'll be able to check them in Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX) from "Remote systems" tab.
Hope this information will help !

  • Mac's name blank in network after changing it

When I first booted up my Mac mini it made me type my name for my account and I decided to use my full name, I was OK with that. What I didn't know is that it's going to use my first name as my computers name so when I went to find my iPhone/mac it showed "Amiel's Mac mini". I also checked in the client list in my modem and it showed the same. I use "amielDH" as a name to all my iDevices like "amielDH's iPad/iPhone" and I really would like to continue doing that with my iDevices and Macs. So I googled how to change my computers and name I change it in "Sharing" under "System Preferences". But when I went to check on the name in my modem's client list it showed only blank. I decided to revert my computers name and it showed up  like nothing happen. It was OK.
Question is: How do I change my computer's name that the network would also show?

I'm sorry, I'm asking how to change the name of my computer/mac on my network since it's showing blank right now after I change my computer's name under "sharing". Thanks!

  • Airport card 802.11b sees other networks but NOT my network!

Hi. Having a very strange tech issue today...
I have a 1ghz ti-book that no longer wants to connect or even SEE my home network after waking up from sleep. Up until today there has never been an issue. My home network is distributed via a Netgear 802.11b and g wireless router. Again, I have never ever had any issue whatsoever connecting to my network. WEP is enabled. There are also 6 other computers all connecting to the same network via wireless too. No problems.
The crazy thing is I know the card is still functioning properly because I can still see all the other available networks around in my area. Even when I place the ti-book RIGHT NEXT to the antenna on the netgear router, it refuses to acknowledge that it is there. Meanwhile, it is showing all of my neighbors networks just fine!
The only variable in this equation is that the hinge of the display is damaged, such that it won't stay open "by itself". The display normally has to be propped up against something. The machine works fine otherwise, no issues. The weak bezel breaking is an issue that many ti-book owners faced and it has been broken for a LONG time with no performance issues at all. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the wire to the antenna for the Airport card goes up the side of the display and somehow the wire is damaged or frayed. I don't know if this is how the ti-book was designed....does anyone know? Specifically, if the wire for the airport card runs along inside the case of the display on the 15 inch 1ghz ti-book?
If it does not...and it seems like it is not hardware damage to the cable because how else could I still be getting other networks but not my own...then I am stumped as to how to trick my machine into recognizing the network again. I have done the basic things such as booting into single user mode and rebuilding my index, logging in as root and other users to see if the preferences were corrupt, and even installing a bunch of wifi wardriving apps to force recognition of my network and still nothing!
Again the machine is right next to the access point, so what is causing it to no longer "see" it? I also updated the firmware in the router and checked configurations but no changes have been made and all the other machines work fine. Also it has NEVER done this before so I don't know how to troubleshoot it!
*What would cause an airport card to reject the signal that it is configured to connect to? How should I go about getting it to see the network again...without reconfiguring the network which would mean having to update all the other machines, etc.* I have macstumbler and istumble running and they see PLENTY of networks except for the closest one. It is so bizarre. It was working when I went to bed and now today, no network. I have rebooted numerous times, etc.
please help!! i need some ideas!!!
    thanks!

a somewhat in depth search across the interwebs has lead me to the conclusion that this problem is also affecting Leopard users as well. (I am on old hardware and running the latest Tiger) To be honest, I can not remember if there was an Apple update right before this problem started to happen. However, it seems real enough and many users out there are having problems re-connecting to their home/work networks after waking from sleep.
    just to clarify:
Using a ti-book with normal airport card installed (b not g)
Connected to a Netgear wireless router (configured to manage both b and g traffic)
WEP 64bit encryption key is being used for network
No problems whatsoever until a few days ago
    what works:
unplugging the power to the Netgear router (cycling power)
    what doesn't work:
    waking from sleep
    restarting
manually entering network name and password
using 3rd party apps to find network
resetting/deleting Network location preferences and creating new one
    deleting AppleAirPort2.kext from /System/Library/Extensions/
using either Diagnostic or Assistant mode to reconnect from scratch
it should NOT be this difficult to solve a networking issue. what is going on here?

  • Cannot connect to internet on ipad mini need to use 'other network' please help

cannot connect to internet need another network as haven't password

The Other Network option is so you can connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot that might have its name hidden.  Other Network gives you the oppertunity to type the name of the hidden Wi-Fi hotspot so the iPad can see it.
If you are looking for a Wi-Fi hotspot to join, but can not because you do not have the password to join that network, you will need to ask the hotspot's owner for permission and a password before you can join.
If you have internet in your house and you want to connect your iPad Mini to the internet, you will need a wireless router or access point.  Ask your internet provider, they may already have that available for you and it would be a quick setup for them.
    Good luck,
    UG
