Naming and Joining Macs to Domain after Netrestore

Hi,
We have around 150 Macbook Pros (Yosemite), we have been updating the OS on them for a while and this summer i am planning for a wipe and install by Netrestore with my Yosemite Server. I was wondering if there was a script i could run after the net restore process that can name and join them to my AD. Our Naming convention is MAC-(Teacher designation)-(Department)-(Initials). Is this possible??... I am not an expert in scripting so was hoping somebody could help.
Thank you!!

If you're creating your images using System Image Utility there's an action for doing exactly that... Apply System Configuration Settings.

  • Windows 7 64bit and Joining Windows 2008 domain

just installed Windows 7, 64bit. When I tried to join it to the domain I'm getting "network path not found". I've tried to manually add a host record for the computer in DNS but that doesn't work. I've even set the IP static and then registered
it in DNS. When I do this, I see the host record with the IP (static) but still can't join to the domain. What's the problem and how can I resolve it?

    Hi HawaiiKai,
What is your Server operating system version, Windows Server 2003, 2008 (R2) or 2012 (R2)?
You may take a look at the KB article below:
"Network Path Not Found" Error Message When You Try to Add Workstation to Domain
Also, please make sure you have Client for Microsoft Networks
    checked on the NIC properties.
Or you may consider to update the NIC driver.

  • Windows 2012 R2 ADRMS domain controller version and Non-domain-joined Mac Client with outlook 2011

    Hi,
What is the AD version for Windows 2012R2 ADRMS?  Is it possible to have Windows 2003 R2 DC with Windows 2012R2 ADRMS?
Any installation guide Non-domain-joined Mac Client with outlook 2011?
What is the SQL version for Windows 2012R2 ADRMS?
    Please advise.  Thanks.
    Kelvin Teang

    Hi Kelvin -
There is no RMS Client for Macs.  That functionality is actually provided through the Office for Mac application (this is different compared to the PC).  Domain-joined clients will autodiscover the RMS server and should be able to create and consume
protected content.  Non-domain-joined clients cannot automatically discover their RMS server.  In this scenario, prepare a protected document or email from a domain-joined machine and send it to your non-domain-joined users.  They will open
the document or email up and the URLs contained in the publishing license of the document will direct them to the correct RMS server.
    I hope that helps!

  • Windows machines can't join domain after 10.5.4 upgrade

    Howdy folks,
I have a ticket open with Apple on this but am posting here in hopes that someone might have an idea for me.
I upgraded our Mac OS X Server 10.5.3 to 10.5.4 on Sunday, and this morning several users reported that their PCs running Windows XP SP2 were unable to login to the Windows domain hosted on this machine. It's the primary domain controller for the Windows users.
One thing to note is that I had to reinstall the server completely because the 10.5.4 patcher crashed, creating all kinds of mayhem. I did a fresh install of OS X Server 10.5 and immediately applied the 10.5.4 combo updater to it. I had to restore the Open Directory from an archival copy, and the SMB was created fresh. Not sure why but the SMB services weren't preserved by the Server settings export command in Server Admin.
I thought unbinding the PC from the Windows domain and then rebinding it with a new name would help, but I've been completely unable to add older computers to the domain, even after removing the old computer records first.
I've got a reproducible failure mode for this problem on a Windows XP virtual machine running on VMware Fusion on my Mac. Here's the method I've been using to create the failure:
    1. Change Windows XP System name to something new that doesn't already have a computer record on the Mac OS X Server and reboot.
    2. After the reboot, run "NewSID" program on Windows to globally change my Windows machine's SID to a new, random value, and reboot again.
    3. Attempt to use the Network ID wizard in the Windows Control Panel to re-add the machine to the domain under a new name so there's no conflict with any old computer records floating around in Open Directory. After it prompts me to enter the username, password and domain name for a user who's authorized to add machines to the domain, I get a dialog box that displays this error:
"Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following error has occurred:
    An internal error occurred."
    Not too informative.
Here are the error messages I see in /var/log/samba/log.smbd (searching for the new computer name in the search field):
    netbios connect: name1=BIGMAC name2=JEFFVM6
    netbios connect: local=bigmac remote=jeffvm6, name type = 0
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
    odssam_getgrnam gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Groups record for 'JEFFVM6$'!
opendirectorysamsearchname gave -14136 [eDSRecordNotFound]: no dsRecTypeStandard:Computers record for account 'JEFFVM6$'
kDSStdAuthNewUser was successful for account "jeffvm6$"
At that point it's impossible to join the computer to the domain no matter what. The most puzzling thing is that SOME of our users were able to login without any problems whatever. The ones that were either physically off or somewhere else when the 10.5.4 upgrade was applied are the only PCs that seem to be having problems.
Any help at all is appreciated. I suspect this is some kind of a SID conflict because the SMB server had to be recreated from scratch, but have no idea how to fix the client, the server, or both to make the computer account creation process work.

    The problem is fixed.
The issue boils down to an argument between the Open Directory server on bigmac (the OS X Server machine) and the SMB server on bigmac. The crucial information I needed to solve this problem was located here: http://www.radiotope.com/node/61
The Open Directory database had to be restored from a backup following this weekend's problematic upgrade, and it had a different value for the SID for the Windows domain than the one used by the SMB server software itself. Even stranger was that the Open Directory database actually had the wrong domain name! The It was listed as "BIGMAC" in Open Directory, even though it was set to the correct Windows domain name in the SMB server.
The solution was to demote the SMB server from a Primary Domain Controller to a Standalone Machine, and then repromote it. Although I changed no values in the settings, and did not modify the plist containing the SID in the Open Directory via the Inspector in Workgroup Admin, after the SMB PDC was repromoted, the SIDs and the domain names in Open Directory and the SMB config agreed with each othe. Now new machines can join the domain and users can login just as they did before. No client-side modifications are necessary.
Hope this is helpful to someone else. It was quite the hair-pulling experience for a while there.

  • Ethernet adapter not working with new Mac Mini after NetRestore.

I'm currently working with an issue regarding Mini 4,1s and their difference from the main driver set in 10.6.4. I'm in an educational environment and attempting to effectively netrestore a hard drive image that was built on a Mini 3,1 with all possible updates made to the OS (10.6.4).
The new minis have no problem netbooting, and downloading the disc image from the server *over ethernet*. In fact, they do it in a very rapid fashion. The issue is that once the machines boot up, they no longer have ethernet capabilities. In fact, the ethernet device does not even appear in system profiler at all. After reading quite a lot about this problem, it appears that there is a difference in the driver set on the special "Mid-2010 Mini 4,1" update and the driver set found in a normal 10.6.4 install.
I have attempted various permutations of installing the Mid-2010 update, but most of them include having an existing 10.6.4 install that was not built on the Mini, and attempting to install the update over the install, or replacing the driver in suspect itself. The issue persists.
Is there something I'm missing, and is this a common problem?
tl;dr: non mac mini 10.6.4 installation copied on mac mini 4,1, and ethernet drivers don't work.

Thanks for your suggestion, I cloned my 1.83GHZ Mac Mini's main drive with Carbon Copy Cloner and restored it onto a new 2.4GHZ Mac Mini. Since the new Mac was replacing the older one's mother ship role in my HTPC setup, this method would ensure the easiest transition. Everything works fine, except that ethernet wont work, it did before, but doesn't now. I already tried several confirmed-working-by-me cables and no luck.
I tried your step and understand the logic behind them, but as soon as I replaced my files with the ones you suggested from my 2.4GHZ Mac Install Disc, the system reports some conflicts. I repaired permissions after and before this happens (tried twice, once after successfully restoring via Tim Machine) and still it occurred. After reboot Ethernet was still dead and so was WiFi. Luckily I was able to get everything back to normal by replacing the entire Extensions folder with the one prior to the changes. Restoring the two files alone would not do it.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • VM with MS SQL will not longer join domain after a reboot

I setup several VM's and a domain. Everything was working fine until I had to shut down the machine. Now only 2 out of the 3 can join the domain. The third is a VM with MS SQL. It claims to be joined to the domain, but logging on using a domain account no
longer works and the VM cannot see DS.  The IP address is still local.

    Hello,
When you said "The IP address is still local", did you means the IP address of the SQL Server VM is a static IP address of a virtual network? Or it use the dynamic IP address that assigned by default. If you had congifure a statice IP address, it will not
    change after restart.
    http://www.bhargavs.com/index.php/2014/03/13/how-to-assign-static-ip-to-azure-vm/
What error message did you received when logon with the domian account? please verify domain account is vaild and the password is not expired . What's more, you can also check the system event log, it should post more details about the issue.

  • Cannot join Windows XP machines to the Mac PDC domain

    Frustrated...
Yesterday, I was able to successfully add 5 Windows XP machines to the Mac PDC Domain (lets call it xyz.lan). Those machines show up as valid computer accounts in Workgroup Mananger (PC1$, PC2$, etc.). Users are able to logon to those Windows XP machines using their Mac Open Directory user account and access their home folder, etc.
This morning, for some reason, I can no longer join XP machines to the Mac PDC domain. On both PCs I tried it with, I receive a "Insufficient System Resources exist to complete the requested service" on the Windows XP machine. I am using the diradmin user account and password to supply credentials. Same exact process as yesterday (which worked fine).
A couple things of note. I made sure the PDC domain is set to Enabled for allowing Guest Access and that WINS Registration is also enabled. Authentication is lso set for NTLMv2 and NTLM for enabled. I also tried rebooting the server this morning as well. It's running 10.5.4. This was not an upgrade from 10.4, but a fresh install of Leopard.
No changes were made on the server between yesterday and today that I am aware of.
Looking at the /var/log/samba/log.smbd log, there are thousands of entries for "This process has forked and you cannot use this corefunctionality process, You must EXEC()" etc... The log also shows failures when the XP machine tries to join to the domain. Log entries are listed showing, "pdbdefault_createuser: failed to add new account for 'PC6$'". Adding PC6$ manually via Workgroup Manager doesn't help either.
Any idea what to check next? I read so many varied things about Leopard and SMB not quite playing nice. People mentioning they had to go through all sorts of hurdles to get this working. Any advise is welcome.

Any news about this? I'm having the same problem trying to join a Vista box to the domain. Here are the logs:

  • Is there any way to log in to active directory from a mac without joining the AD domain?

I am looking for a way to log in to active directory without having the Mac join the AD domain. Basically i have not been able to understand all the ramifications of joining the AD domain. From what I have read in various documentations on the apple site and some of the AD plug in sites, it seems that if the mac joins the domain, all kinds of group policies get 'transfered' to the mac experience. How exactly does that affect the privileges of the local mac user on their machine? do they need to change their mac password? what happens to their existing home directories? what happens when they have their laptops at home?
    TIA
    Costas Manousakis

    Costas Manousakis wrote:
The reason i am hesitant about binding the macs is that i'm not sure what are all the effects of that. will they have to change their mac passwords / usernames? more than likely the auto login will have to go. If there are multiple accounts on the mac (ex one admin account and other regular and admin accounts) how does binding affect them? how will it work when the mac is not in the office? if they have admin rights on the mac but not on the windows AD, how will that affect them? Do you know of a source i could go to to find answers for questions like these?
Unfortunately, the source for answers should be your IT department. I can tell you how my machine works. I have a personal machine with no restrictions and a work machine bound to an Active Directory domain. Even my work machine has few restrictions compared to normal. I have a privileged account I can use if necessary. Also, I'm pretty much a goody-two-shoes so I don't try to circumvent restrictions.
Basically, the Mac uses a system called Open Directory to manage user accounts. Every Mac comes with its own miniature Open Directory server. If you have a network with MacOS X Server, you can use the server's Open Directory. You can also use Microsoft's Active Directory to perform all the same tasks. The user's logins and passwords would be whatever is on Active Directory. They can change their password on the Mac and it will change the Active Directory password. Active Directory can enforce passwords expirations too.
I am not an Active Directory administrator, so I can't give you specifics. Pretty much everything you have mentioned can be controlled via Active Directory. That is what it is for. It does require active participation of your IT staff. If you don't have that, then I don't see it working out well. It sounds like a paradox. IT wants to control users, but doesn't want to deal with it. You can't have it both ways. Maybe let it be known among the Mac users that visiting those restricted sites could cause IT to get rid of Mac altogether. That does sound like a probable outcome.

  • Having a Nightmare trying to get OS X Lion to join and retain Windows 2k3 Domain

    Hi,
I cannot seem to join OS X Lion to a Windows 2003 Domain and when i do manage to join the domain after repairing permisions, several reboots, deleting the computer object in AD, its doesnt seem to retain the membership as i cannot login with a domain account.
I've checked the time, permissions, modifed the local host files, checked dns.  Only thing i havent done is rebuild the imac.
It's just got worse over the last week or so.  Think i did an OSX update too.
Any idea's?  I'm unable to login as my domain user profile.
    Thanks.

Looks like this may well be fixed in 10.7.2 but i'm running 10.7.1.   What do i do until then ;-(

16 mo young Mac Pro will not turn on. Dead. Why. No problems ever! Installed Yosemite and did not boot up after. Did that kill it? To young to die. What happened?what do I do now??????? Help!

Note that you don't have a Mac Pro as stated. Your profile says you have a MacBook Pro. Please clarify as they are entirely different computers. If nothing below works for you, then make a Genius Appointment and take it in for service.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Using MDT to re-join computers to a domain after a re-image

Since 2010 we have been using WDS to build, capture and deploy our image across our organisation (A High School) which has worked well enough. While WDS can do all this the build and capture is a little clunky and relies on you to manually installing all
programmes and then mounting the WIM file and inject the drivers so I have moved us onto MDT for the build and capture before importing the finished WIM file into WDS for deployment.
This has worked much better as MDT makes it much quicker to get an image up and going (programme silent installs, testing is much quicker etc) and drive management is as simple as telling MDT to put ALL the drivers you want into the image but I have been
reading that you should link MDT and WDS together.
I followed the instruction and imported the LiteTouchPE wim file into WDS and we are able to PXE boot right into MDT and either make a new image or capture the one we are working on but I am trying to automate the deployment so it is more like what we have
when just using WDS for deployment. Because I want to retain the ability to use MDT to make a new image I cannot customise the customesettings.ini file too much and instead I am relying on MDT task sequences for must of the customisations.
Currently all our systems are pre-staged into WDS (I think it is actually Active Directory at the end of the day but you use wdsutil to pre-stage them) so when we boot into PXE WDS deploys and configures the machines using WDSClientUnattend and ImageUnattend
XML file so that once the deployment is finished it is sitting at the logon screen waiting for the user to login already joined to the domain and our wireless network.
I am having trouble trying to achieve this same result using our WDS + MDT combo with the main sticking point being trying to re-join the computer back to the domain (we re-image machines constantly so re-join back to the domain is a must). I wrote/found
a PowerShell script that does the domain join but because an account already exists (all our machines are pre-staged under their service tag and GUID) it throws an error about their already being an account with that name (the computer still appear to join
the domain and I can logon using my domain account). Because of this error MDT borks the deployment and doesn't finish up and complains about deployment being in progress etc.
Is using WDS to boot the LiteTouchPE and then deploying through MDT the best way or are we better off going back to using MDT to do the build and capture and then using WDS and it's pre-staging to do the deploy? I really like that with MDT I can have a little
more control over driver deployment (recently had a problem where we got a new laptop and injecting the new drivers into the WIM broke the entire image for all our machines except the new one) and software at the time of the re-image (I cannot install the
Lenovo hotkey software in a virtual machine because it does a hardware check and fails to install so either the entire image needs to be made on a Lenovo or the software doesn't get installed).
I am currently making a Windows 8.1.1 x64 Enterprise SOE/MOE/whatever you would like to call it using MDT 2013 with WDS running on Windows Server 2012 R2 x64.

    Hello,
It is better to use so-called "thin" images. These contain only the operating system (in a facility and captures vm). Subsequently pilots and soft will be deployed by the bais of MTD.
For drivers I recommend you to use selection profiles. Moreover it is necessary to put a condition in step "Inject Drivers". Condition Type: Variable called MODEL, variable value Latitude E6430 (change the value to the desired model). It is necessary
to add more step Inject Drivers that type of position.
Application level, you import the different applications in MDT allowing you to select only the desired wizard when applications. If you want to automate this step you will need to indicate statically in the task sequence to install applications, this will
require the creation of several task sequence.
    Best Regards
Well I am well aware the Microsoft recommends a thin image it is simply not practical in a School environment where Students change in and our of subjects and where the combination of subject specific software is nearly infinite the overhead is too great
(maybe if we used something like SCCM where we could deploy applications based on OU or group membership).
All your other points aside my problem/issue/question which appears to have been lost is, how do I rejoin a computer to the domain using MDT?  We re-image laptops constantly and using WDS they rejoin with no problems but using MDT an error is thrown because
the account already exists.  In WDS we have all our machines pre-staged so is there an MDT equivalent that will let me re-image a laptop and have it re-join the domain under the same account without throwing and error.

    Dr.Conga,
did you try to do a Time Machine backup from your MacBook Pro, or a Time Machine restoration to it?
Are you trying to reload your current version of OS X (10.7.4, to judge from your signature), or are you trying to reload the version of Mac OS X that came on the grey installation DVDs that originally came with your MacBook Pro?

After selecting and deleting region, and joining remaining parts, it keeps playing the track with the deleted region!
    What am I doing wrong?
How exactly are you doing this?
When I cut out a part of an audio region, then drag the remaining parts together, so they are touching, the track will skip the cut out section when playing the file.  Also, if I select the remaining parts of the region and use the command "Edit > join regions". This will create a new audio file with the cut out part deleted.
You should see this prompt, when you are joining the regions:

This is not a reply. I just want to elaborate on this problem.
My computer freezes occasionally when it is used after being sleep for a while. The spinning ball appears and everything is totally disabled. Nothing on the keyboard works.
The mouse moves, but does not work.
The only solution is to turn the power off and on (losing all data in open applications.)
I kept the System monitor running on the side to find out which program was running when the computer froze. The Monitor as well as all other applications froze, but the data showed:
    Firefox 18.4%
    Activity Monitor 0.9%
    Firefox Plugin 0.2%
This is all the information I have. By the way, I am using iMac with OS 10.6.

    Hi,
    Scott Agnew,
Please check if there are any updates pending for Suitcase fusion and Illustrator.
You can also try resetting AI preferences.
    User Library/Preferences/Adobe Illustrator [#] Settings
Rename Adobe Illustrator [#] Settings to old Adobe Illustrator [#] Settings
    User Library/Preferences/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator/Version[#]
    Rename Version[#] to old Version[#]
Access user library Access hidden user library files | Mac OS 10.7 and later
Do you get any crash report. Look if it says anything for Wacom or extensis?
    Thanks,
