Naming clips or subclips

I have looked extensively through both the manuals and the posts but still need to get something clear in my mind.
I have been editing on other systems for many years. I tend to do a lot of my cutting and making clips on the timeline - it may not be text book but it works very well for me and the type of material I am working on. I want to put some of those clips back into bins in the browser and I want to rename them so that later in the edit I can reference them. This has never been a problem with other systems but I find that I cannot do this in FCP as it renames the whole clip.
I understand that I could work in the viewer and do this by creating a subclip or I could use markers but I really would like to carry on as I have in the past as I have developed a very fast and efficient editing workflow using this method.
I wonder if I have misunderstood the system.
I could make independent clips in the timeline or make a master clip in the browser and rename these but am not sure what the ramifications of doing this would be for the project further down the line.

Thank you. That is very encouraging.
I now have the option of making them independent clips in the timeline or copying them to the browser and making them into master clips.
Would you know what the difference is?
I really have tried to understand all this master clip, affiliate clip, independent clip stuff but it just doesn't sink in.
However I have found that once I have done this I can re-name my clips independently without changing the name of every clip linked ot it.

Naming Clips

Just upgraded from iMovie HD to iMovie '09. Is it possible to "name" clips so that they can be easily identified in the clips pane? Video taping sporting events can result in over 100 clips in a single event. By naming clips (iMovie HD), I could keep track of certain plays that I needed to use during the editing of a movie. And, over a whole sports season, I have to keep highlights from every game in order to put a full season DVD together. What a waste of time to have to search through so many clips to find just the one I need and all because there's no way to differentiate them from the others. The colored lines are not enough!

I have a similar problem...
Being new to iMovie, I thought things were going smoothly when I plugged in my new helmet cam and imported 40 clips of downhill biking. I went to the trouble to adjust the time/date stamp and even name all the clips.
Next I fired up iMovie... and preceded to get slightly ****** off. Those couple hours of work appear to have been in vain. iMovie appears to ignore all of that info. Is this correct?
And if so, how does a user go about identifying a particular clip amongst dozens that look nearly identical. In this scenario, they're all of the same race course so they don't look much different at first glance.
Is there anyway at all to see the file name or even better, the info that I typed into iPhoto? I'm really hoping so because otherwise using iMovie will be incredibly frusterating. There might as well be no preview or scrubbing at all. Imagine how difficult that would be. That's basically what i'm dealing with... in attempting to find a particular clip among many similar clips.

Accidentally hit "remove unused", had a bunch of clips and subclips that disappeared. Can I undo?

Premiere was freezing and in the process of trying to figure it out I (stupidly) hit Project -> Remove Unused. I had a bunch of clips and subclips that I had made that I haven't yet put in any sequence. Is there any way to undo this action or did I just remove all of my subclips and I'll have to start over again? Let me know if you have any ideas!

CTRL-Z may help, or otherwise revert to an auto-saved project.

Batch capture logged clips makes subclips that are invisible in sequence

Any ideas?
I log a series of clips (the icon is the square master clip icon). They are offline until I batch capture. However, once I batch capture, they become subclips(jaggy-edge subclip icon). They can play in the viewer and they are viewable in Quicktime. However, once I put them in the sequence, they are only black, even after rendering. HOWEVER, if I do a capture now off of the SAME tape w/ the SAME settings it will play just fine (after render) in the SAME sequence.
Anyone else experiencing this? Thanks in advance

Okay, finally able to do a couple of tests. I started a new project w/ settings for capturing good ol' NTSC DV, logged some footage and then batch captured (ntsc footage) -- no problem at all. The clips were clips, not subclips. Then I went into a project for DVCPro HD 720 30p, and pulled some clips from my original low res project into the HD project. Made those offline, then batch captured those at the full HD resolution. Not a problem there either. Then I went back into the original low res project, made a clip offline, recaptured it at full HD res, no problem. Soo.... I think there is some connection between what I've been capturing at my "low res HD" setting and the problem of turning the logged clips into subclips upon capture.
All that said...I think I'm ok. At least I know now when I do need to capture it all in full HD res, I'll be able to, and it will relink into my project correctly as visible clips.
Also, how can you mark somthing "helpful' if it has already been marked "solved"...it is not undoable, correct?

Naming clips within a sequence

Help, I'm stuck! I've created a sequence from a subclip and would like to assign a different name to each clip within the sequence. Changing one clip affect all the others. I have tried all the options described in the editing workshop book by Tom Wolsky but have not been able to do it.
What am I doing wrong?

Thank you for your reply. This is what I was doing
1. Made the sequence
2. Clicked on the Sequence 1 icon on the browser and selected Make Sequence Clips Independent
3. Moved the sequence clips from the time line to the browser
4. Changed the name in one clip and they all changed including the master

1. Made the sequence
2. Highlighted the sequence in the time line
3. Selected make clips independent from the Sequence pull-down menu
4. Moved the sequence to the browser and was able to re-name them independently.
Obviously I misinterpreted the explanation in the book.

Naming clip without altering the original clip name

Hi
I'm looking for a way to naming a clip without altering the original clip name.
For example:
I've got a clip called D066_140825_001_AA1663, which I need to preserve. But I would like to add an additonal name in a different box.
Ideally it would look something like this:
Name                                        Description
D066_140825_001_AA1663     Erica is moving the sofa
D066_140825_001_AA1664     Erica is driving
D066_140825_001_AA1665     Erica and John meets
etc.
I see that in the Premiere project window there's a row called Description. Are there a way for me to add a clip description from Prelude, or name the clips in any other way?

Clip and subclips with audio out of sync

I have a one-hour or so clip that I broke up into about 20 subclips.
Unfortunately, the audio is out of sync throughout the hour, but the degree of out-of-syncness varies throughout the hour, so some of the clips are 10 frames out of sync, some 3 frames, etc.
I went through the clips, setting in and out points, and now I realize that I have to put them in sync individually.
I can sync them by placing them in the timeline and breaking the a/v link, or locking the audio and dragging the video around, but then I am left with a clip in the timeline. What I really want to do is sync them now, before I assemble the clips in the timeline (with lots of other media interspersed; they won't be continguous), so they are waiting for me in the browser, all synced and ready to go.
How do I do this?

Sounds like the video was shot with 12 bit audio. Please make certain your camera /camcorder is set properly to 16 bit audio (not 12 bit).

Naming clips in browser:

I'm attempting to take one long clip and break it up in the timeline into smaller ones. The only issue is that when I'm dragging and dropping the new clips into the browser or the bin in the browser, they all automatically take on one name.
If I attempt to rename one clip it changes the names of all the other clips.
Another question, how do i get films in 'sequence' in the browser.

Here is a suggestion to make breaking up a long clip into smaller clips easier.
Load the long clip in the Viewer. Mark and In and an Out where you want the smaller (sub) clip to start and end. When you have the in and out set, type Command + U and FCP will make a subclip of your marked material in the bin. Note that name is highlighted when you do. You can either do nothing and let FCP number the subclips incrementally after the first one, or you can type a new name to remind you of the contents. Keep repeating this process until you have the long clip broken down into all the subclips that you want.
When you mark your in and out point, leave a second or two extra at the start and end so that there is some wiggle room when you start to edit your clips to the timeline.

Made a big mistake when re-naming clips

My HD learning curve is getting steeper by the minute...
Ok, I've spent the entire day capturing HD footage for the first time. Figured it out ok and everything imported fine as ProRes 422. So far so good.
I needed to change a some clip names to keep things as simple as possible and I read in a tutorial that I needed to rename the files on the scratch disc to keep everything the same. I re-named all the clips in the bin though, even the ones I didn't change and now those clips don't play and I get a general error box popping up.
Is there a way I can get this clips back? They are on the scratch disc, just not playing from the browser.

Can you right click (or control click) on the clips in the browser and choose to rename the file to match the clip?

Re-naming clips/reconnection

Hi there,
I've got an incredibly important project and I'm getting into a bit of a muddle and stressed about backing everything up and sorting out the files.
Bit of background of what I'm doing....shooting in AVCHD, ingesting into FCP through Log & Transfer, and through Compressor I'm converting the clips to DV to work with in the edit.
I have a DV folder with all the converted clips which I bring into FCP and work away with. My question really is that I was going to use the 'rename - file to match clip' setting to change all the file names because there are a couple of Clip 1's and Clip 2's etc which I don't want confused. For ease of use I thought it best to change the names.
I've researched and seen there is some horror stories with reconnection issues changing names of files. I've got a back of the original cards on one drive. I've got a main project drive with everything on it and another back-up project drive which is a clone of the main one.
My question is this really, if something went horribly wrong where both the main drive and back-up drive died on me, and I only had the original cards left with a project file - surely there would be problems reconnecting? The ingesting and conversion process I'm sure would mean different file names......and if I had do go ahead and change the file names in this project how would it be able to reconnect properly? For example, if Clip No.1 was changed to 'Tom in Car' and I had to go through the ingesting/conversion process again, I would then have to find the relevant Clip No 1 and change the name again to 'Tom in Car' and do this similarly for every clip in the project??? And that would reconnect again? Is that right?
Sorry I'm beginning to confuse myself.
I'm basically trying as hard as possible to not mess this up, so if anyone could offer some advice or if I'm doing anything incredibly idiotic then feel free to correct my stupidity.

That's a good suggestion, I'll start doing that.
One thing though, with ingesting often I'll have a couple of Clip 1's, 2's, etc - a Log Note or Label Note won't help differentiate the files if reconnecting though would it?? How will it know which file it's supposed to be reconnecting to..
There are a lot of files on this project thus far and so I just log and transfer them all in and then sort them out when they're in FCP....unfortunately this means a lot of duplicate filenames. Really bad practice methinks, I'll need to read up a bit more on this process.

Batch naming clips on ingest

Is there a way to batch name clips as they are ingested using either CS6 or CC? When I log and transfer using FCP7 I can set the name of the selected clips and number them sequentially while they are ingested. I do not like having zillions of clips labeled _001... even if the folder is labeled. It makes the project file list and timeline clip labels unhelpful as well.

There is no way to do this in any version of PP...however you can batch ingest and rename files in Prelude CC. Prelude CC is just the tool to review media, ingest, and rename clips. In addition you can use Prelude CC to combine multiple clips into one clip, add mutliple trasnfer destinations and transcode settings.

Naming clips ALREADY on stage dynamically

I have a design with a group of lights already on the
stage...there are a LOT of them so giving them all an instance name
would take to long, how do I dynamically give a group of movie
clips instance names if they are already on the stage? I am trying
to create a type of twinkle effect but I need to be able to layout
everything on the stage the way I want it instead of using one of
the many tutorials I have found where someone creates the movie
clips and the stars(lights) dynamically.

If you did not already give them instance names in the
authoring environment, Flash assigns them names for you.
Nedwebs script will trace what those names are put you can
either rename each clip dynamically or simply push the default
names in an array and and then manipulate them dynamically.

Naming clips so that events are sorted by clip dates

I have some dv-avi clips that I've imported using my old PC. I now import those clips in iM. To get the events sorted correctly by date/time I change the name to a format that iM interprets as date/time stamp (e.g. clip-2007-12-24 12;00;00.dv). iM then sorts the clip correctly by date and time.
The problem is, I have to change the extension also, from avi to dv. For some reason the clip won't play any more after that. If I retain the old extension, the clip plays fine but is not sorted correctly under iM events.
Any workaround?

If I change the extension to .mov, iM does not allow me to even try to import the clip (it is grayed). Strange.
If I change the extension to .dv, iM does allow me to import the clip, but the video does not play. I am almost certain this method has worked before. Maybe something has changed with the updates of OS X or iM.
I guess I could use MPEG Streamclip to export the clips as DV. I just wonder if it somehow converts the clips too (so I loose quality).

Subclips sorting/naming problem

when i split a long captured clip into subclips with the dv-start-stop thingie, i get a bunch of subclips that are named something like
"subclip 1, subclip 2, subclip 3" etc.
problem is, when i open the browser, the sorting does something like
subclip 1
subclip 11
subclip 12
subclip 19
subclip 2
subclip 20
subclip 21
which is really quite confusing.
is there a way to fix this, or change it to include leading 0s when naming subclips?

okay, thanks for the CatDV tip, i'll look into it later tonight. first glance looks promising, though.
second, i have 30 hours of tapes to capture, and the dvcam deck is a rental.
third, logging and THEN capturing from tape is tedious.
so, i got am extra hard drive (i'm almost at the terrabyte barrier , and load everything at once.
THEN i do scene detection, and end up with about 300 scenes per tape.
now to weed out the stuff i don't want, i'll go through the browser items one at a time. and it's here that this weird sorting gives me headaches, since i'm looking at the tape, i know the sequence of events as they took place, i klick around and then i jump ahead an hour, then back again.
if i can't add a 0, why can't i tell FCP to go by numbers and interpret numbers as such.
anyways ... i guess there's not really a solution except for third party software like CatDV.

Editing long clips into short clips and naming them differently

I've got a long clip that I'm trying to break up into lots of shorter clips and give different names to. So I loaded the clip into the timeline, press Control-V where I want to cut, and then drag that clip back into the Browser. But every time I drag a new one to the Browser and rename it, the names of the other clips change to be the same as the just-named clip.
What am I doing wrong? What's the easiest way to do what I'm trying to do?

RE: timecode when capturing.
Timecode is always captured (DV in this case) as long as you do not use 'non-controllable device' as the capture protocol. When you use 'non-controllable device' no timecode is delivered even if it did exist on the tape.
Put another way, if there is TC on the tape, Capture Now will bring it in as long as you have 'Firewire' or 'Firewire Basic' (whichever is appropriate for your capture device) selected.
There is one other way to capture full tapes and still get individual editable clips (and I HATE subclips ...). Squarebox makes a simple app called Live Capture Plus that will capture a complete tape in one pass then break the resulting large file into individual clips based on start/stop detection. It works quite handily and will allow you save your drive mechanism if you are using your camera as a deck (and Canons are not known for robust tape subsystems). If you combine LCP with CatDV you have a robust cataloging system as well.
