Naming default files

Question

Recently I overhauled an existing site. I changed the name of
the default files (the file that pops up when no file is indicated)
from default.htm to index.shtml. Looking at the site statistics
since the new site has been uploaded I see a lot of "page not
found" errors and am wondering if people had bookmarked the site
under "default.htm"--a file which no longer exists. For example,
www.mysite.com/default.htm instead of just www.mysite.com. Should I
create a dummy default.htm page that automatically transfers the
user to the new page? Or just leave it alone and let people work it
our for theirselves?

I would either create a custom error page with a site map on
it, or ask the
host about how to use .htacess to do a transparent
redirection (if you are
on *nix), or ask then to install ISAPIRewrite (after you
purchase it) (if
you are on Windows).
