Naming folders/tracks on hard drive?

Hi. I've had several tracks on my computer from a long time ago that are not properly named (i.e., track name, artist, album). I've renamed once added to itunes, but at various times I've had to reorganize itunes/my computer and each time these tracks are removed from itunes, they lose all of the info that I've laborously entered.
How can I rename the actual folder on my hard drive so that the track information will always be maintained and properly interpreted by itunes, even if removed and returned?
Thanks.
Toshiba Satellite   Windows XP

Hey guys... sorry for not replying sooner.
I managed to manually do it myself. To clear things up, I wanted iTunes to look at a files directory and literally clone it in iTunes.
Referring to my last example,
Files on my Hard Drive:
Music
     Hip Hop
          2014
          2013
          2012
     Top 40
          2014
          2013
          2012
The music file has a 'tree type' organization which I wanted to be replicated through iTunes playlist folders.
So in iTunes, I see
Music
     Hip Hop
          2014
          2013
          2012
     Top 40
          2014
          2013
          2012
As mentioned before, I just ended up creating playlists folders + playlists myself, and added the tracks through drag-and-drop.

  • Adobe CS5 programs have trouble opening folders on external hard drives under 10.10.2

Just upgraded 2 mac's to 10.10.2. One is a late 2013 Mac Pro, the other is a lot-of-the line, BTO iMac 5K. (Processors and Ram are not an issue)
Both InDesign and Illustrator (CS5) are having difficulty opening folders on external hard drives. Mac Pro is connected to a 5GB LaCie d2 via thunderbolt cable, while the 5K is connected to a 2TB WD my book studio for Mac via FW800 with an apple branded Thunderbolt adapter. Both are formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Using the File>open command then drilling down to the selected folder on the Hard Disk drive, the finder sits blank with the spinning beach ball going.
Other local folders open up quickly and populate file lists with no problems.
Some folders on the external drive can be accessed through the File>open finder dialogue however they are folders that contain fewer sub-folders and files.
    Update while typing this...
Both Folders that were giving us problems contained a shortcut. Hiding that shortcut inside anouther local folder seems to have cleared up the trick. This is a short term work around and I am wondering if Apple is aware of this issue or if others have found the same problem as I have and if this work around fixes their issues?

How long have you been running 10.9?
In my case the external drives go to sleep and have to wake up. Not much to do with Mavericks, just hardware sleeping to save energy. Note that 10.9 is much more energy aware and may put things to sleep more often.  That may be a fair trade off

  • How do I save to individual folders on my hard drive?

How do I save items to individual folders on my hard drive? When I try now it shows the Macintosh HD icon as an option but not the individual folders I've created there. I think I need to go in to Automator but I must be doing something wrong. I selected "Folder Action" then added several items about PDF
documents and add photos to album. I've specified Macintosh HD as the location and hit run.
It appears to have run correctly because it asks me if I want to save the results. A friend of mine runs several web sites. He has asked me to serve as his off site backup so I'm trying to download several years of material. Saving everything to the HD and then dragging each item to where it belongs will take forever.
    I'm hoping someone can help.
    Thanks Bill

  • How to move multiple emails from Mail to my folders on the hard drive

I would like to be able to move multiple emails at a time from a given mailbox to a selected folder on the hard drive in a format that I can subsequently read.
I know I can move them one at a time in RTF. And either RTF or HTML would be fine (along with whatever attachments) as a format.
But I can't seem to find either a command or a format that will allow me to do this.
My goal isn't archiving -- I want easy access to these emails and their attachments. I just want to get them out of Mail and into the folders on my hard drive that have other documents with related content.
I would greatly appreciate any advice that someone could give me.

  • How to move email in bulk to folders on my hard drive

I'm a new Mac user and imported substantial numbers of email from my PC. I've also been adding to them at the rate of about 20/day. Although I have created a number of dedicated folders in Apple Mail to keep them organized, I would like to move the entire contents (or most) of the email from some of those folders to folders on my hard drive, since I want to retain them but don't need them quickly available to me right now.
I've tried the old drag 'n drop, which doesn't seem to work. Anybody know how to do this?
    Thanks

How best to archive emails likely has many answers. I don't know the best approach. All I do is create addtional mailboxes or folders within Apple Mail. I have never yet attempted or needed to move the emails out of Apple Mail to some other location on my HD.

  • How do I archive my verizon email folders into zip folders onto my hard drive?

I have archived my folders twice before into zip folders on my hard drive by using an option in verizon yahoo mail. The last time was last night. However I can not find this option again. Tech support does not know how.
    Thanks

    Hello Annie3,
Verizon Yahoo! mail does not archive using win zip presently.  It appears you were using a 3rd party application to do this which is why your not finding it in the Verizon Yahoo! software.  You can however download the messages into a 3rd party POP client software such as Outlook, Outlook express, Eudora, Thunderbird, Incredimail, etc...  You can find more information on the features of Verizon Yahoo! mail in the help section link http://help.yahoo.com//l/us/verizon/mail/

  • One account with two folders on the hard drive

Sorry but i think this is a very basic question.
I have one user (the administrator), but on the hard drive there are two folders. One named Peter and the other named Dad. I have all of my files in the folder named Peter. I seem to be logged in to the Dad folder. The desktop has nothing on it but in the Peter folder there are many items. Same with the music folder, and there is nothing in iTunes.
    Thanks
Mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Check to see whether your account is listed as the owner of both folders in the Ownership & Permissions section of the Get Info window, which is available by control-clicking the folder; if so, open the NetInfo Manager in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, click the padlock, and type in your password. Next, locate the home property for your user account and change the instance of Dad to Peter in it without changing or deleting any other accounts, groups, or properties. Log out and log back in.
The contents of the Users folder do not indicate which accounts are present on the machine; this folder is the default location for the home folders associated with accounts you've created. It is possible to have a folder inside Users without a corresponding account, and you can have an account on the machine without its home folder being in Users; this applies to system-level accounts by default, but you can set it up for your account or other accounts you've created in the NetInfo Manager.

  • OSInstall.mpkg folders on the Hard Drive after new installation of Mac OS X

I recently installed Mac OS X 10.4.3 on a newly erased hard drive on a G4 to which I'm doing major upgrades. The installation went fine, and everything works well, but ther are four folders on the root level of the hard drive which are puzzling. The folders are named: OSInstall.mpkg.88LSmhLt, OSInstall.mpkg.92Y10Shx, OSInstall.mpkg.93bkoHQb, and OSInstall.mpkg.93LJ3u7J. Inside the folders are folders named Receipts along with files named BaseSystem.installplan and Essentials.installplan. The Receipts folders contain either BaseSystem.pkg and OSInstall.mpkg or Essentials.pkgand OSInstall.mpkg. These are installer apps as far as I can tell, because when I double click 'em they prepare to install. Are these just additional install packages for printer drivers and languages? Can I trash them?
    Thanks for any help.

    Thanks, Kappy.
I verified the /Library/Receipts/ folder and it does contain a BaseSystem.pkg file among 40 other .pkg files. However, I noticed some files that I think should be in there aren't. I checked the Applications folder and discovered some apps missing, that I think should've been installed: Garage Band, Graphic Converter, iDVD, iMovie HD, and iPhoto. All other apps which should've been installed seem to be there. I can either do a custom install of the missing apps, or I might do an Archive and Install to re-install Mac OS X (10.4.3) then go through my updates. Let me know if you have a suggestion.
    Thanks.

  • Lost Folders on External Hard Drive

    Hi all,
Today I tried to delete my time machine back up to free some space on my external hard drive. Unfortunately my mac would not delete the back up via Trash, so as a last resort I ran a terminal to locate the folder within my external hard drive and force delete it. I couldn't just delete the partition because i had lots of other stuff on the external hard drive.
After the terminal command was successful ,deleting only what was in the trash folder within my external hard drive, the back up was deleted. However at the same time three folders have disappeared from within my external hard drive all containing films i was storing. Strangely all three of the folders that appear to have been deleted had an asterisk infront of the folder name.
I can't figure out what has happened to them and how they were seemingly deleted. If anyone could shed any light on this issue i would be very grateful.

That's the cause of the problem.
The way you described it in your first post, makes me think the files could still be on your external HD.
The problem is, you moved the files without letting iTunes know.
The locations are stored in the 'iTunes Library' file (more info here).
If you move them using the Finder the links are lost.
You should have changed the 'iTunes Music folder' (Preferences>Advanced>General) to the music folder on your external HD and then use the 'Consolidate Library...' command from the Advanced menu in the menubar.
That copies all music to the 'iTunes Music folder' as set in the preferences.
It won't help now, but you can use this procedure next time.
It's also important to understand that when iTunes doesn't find the Library at startup, it will reset the 'iTunes Music folder' to the default location on the internal HD. Always connect your ext. HD before running iTunes.
    Now to the possible rescue.
If the files are still on your ext. HD, you can use a script to restore the dead links.
Go to www.dougscripts.com and type 'dead' (without the quotes) in the 'search scripts:' field. Of the scripts that will be found, 'iTunes Track CPR v1.3' looks the logical choice to do the job.
    Hope this helps.

  • Rearranging folders on my hard drive

I know there's probably a FAQ that addresses this issue, but I can't find it...
I am integrating Lightroom, but I need to rearrange the way my folders are stored on my hard drive. I want to modify my current system to put the folders in by year shot. I also want to move them to a separate hard drive on my computer (and back up on two separate hard drives).
Here's my question: how do I rearrange my folders and still allow Lightroom to find them? Will I create a mess? I want to get started on this right away, but am concerned that I'm doing more damage than good.
Would I move (and add) the folders in Windows, and will Lightroom still "find" them? ANd what if I move a folder "off line"? How do I do that?

Move them around in Lightroom, or you're making yourself work.
And when they go offline, Lightroom will simply highlight the folders in red and remember they're there till you bring them online again.

  • How Do I Copy File Names & Folders From A Hard Drive To A Word Document?

    Hi Gang:
This may sound silly but I am having a herd time with the following - seemingly simple task.
I have data DVD-Rs with audio files organized into folders. Each folder contains audio files related to the folder name.
I would like to copy the file names and folders from a DVD-R and paste them into a MS Word file. I am just looking to get a listing of files as they appear on the DVD-Rs in their folders.
The problem is that when I copy and paste, the order changes (seemingly randomly) and the file names are no longer under the folder names. In fact, the whole thing looks to be really random.
Anybody know how to copy file/folder names from a hard drive or DVD-R to a word document and retain the file/folder structure?
    Thanks!
    LAHD

There is an even easier method with no Terminal magic required. In the Finder, select all the files you want the names of, press Command-C, switch to Word and press Command-V. Poof, your done.
If you view the DVD in List VIew, you can expand the folders you want the files for, then select all the files (and their folders if you want them too) and then do the Copy/Paste thing.

  • How to route iTunes to music folders on external hard drive?

Here's my story: Three years ago, I successfully rerouted iTunes so that the program would find my music library on external hard drive. Two days ago, my Apple MacBook computer was updated to the Lion operating system. iTunes was also updated.
Now I have to go back into iTunes and give the program new instruction to go find the music files on external hard drive.
    Details:
My folder on external hard drive, called "iTunes Music," contains various music files and also, I notice, a folder called "iTunes."
Within that "iTunes" folder, the following folders or files are located:
    FOLDER: Album Artwork
    FOLDER: Automatically Add to iTunes
    FILE: iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    FILE: iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    FILE: iTunes Library.itl
    FILE: iTunes Linrary.xml
    FOLDER: iTunes Media
None of this makes any sense to me!
Meanwhile, on the computer's hard drive, following this routing, in the folder called "iTunes," the following folders and files are located:
Users -- Hard Drive -- Music -- iTunes
    FOLDER: Album Artwork
    FOLDER: Album Artwork 6.29.26 PM
    FOLDER: Automatically Add to iTunes
    FILE: iTunes Library 6.29.26 PM
    FILE: iTunes Library Extras.itdb
FILE: iTunes Library Extras.itdb 6.29.26 PM
    FILE: iTunes Library Genius.itdb
FILE: iTunes Library Genius.itdb 6.29.26 PM
    FILE: iTunes Library.itl
    FOLDER: iTunes Media
    FOLDER: iTunes Media 6.29.26 PM
FILE: iTunes Music Library 6.29.26 PM.xml
    FILE: iTunes Music Library.xml
I do not understand any of this. I do not understand WHICH FILE OR FOLDER I should instruct iTunes to go to in order to find the desired music files.
Once the desired files are found, they should appear in the iTunes window on screen. This is not happening.
I have tried holding down the Option key while starting iTunes, which yields a window that asks for me to CHOOSE LIBRARY. I choose the iTunes library file ( iTunes Library.itl) that is located on external hard drive. However, NOTHING HAPPENS. iTunes does not do anything. When the program opens, nothing is visible in the iTunes window, where normally songs are listed. No playlists on the lefthand side. NOTHING.
Thanks for your attention and for any insight you might be able to share.

Just so people know, there's already been several posts on this in this forum:  https://discussions.apple.com/message/18642460

  • Import 800K photos (many duplicates) into Aperture from multiple folders in one hard drive.

I have a hard drive with 800,000+ photos in it, many are duplicates after I have made multiple back-ups to different drives over the years and then transferred all the photos to this new drive. The photos are located in different folders but are all in the same hard-drive. How do a import the photos in the easiest/fastest way? How will they get sorted, by date? Is there anyway that I could delete the duplicates without losing photos? I have many photos with the same file name (but from different cameras), tumbnails, edited photos etc.
    Very thankful for your assistance!

    Hi,
You can import photos from multiple folders.
Just click File >> Get Photos and Videos >> From Files and Folders
Now select the folders you want to import photos from (they should be at same level in the directory, say all folders in My Pictures) using Ctrl+Click, tick the checkbox for 'Get Photos from subfolders' if not already checked and then click 'Get Media'.
    Hope that will help
    Thanks

  • CS6 Bridge certain folders on iMac hard drive blocked

iMac with OS X 10.8.2 and Abobe bridge CS6. Via Bridge many folders on hard drive have a red circle with x in middle, blocking access.
However, if in Photoshop CS6 and use mini Bridge these folders are accessable.

Via Bridge many folders on hard drive have a red circle with x in middle, blocking access.
Run Apple Disk utility for a check and repair permissions for your start up Hard Drive (I assume you are not talking about different users and external Hard Drive?).
Restart Bridge holding down option key and choose reset preferences and try again. If it works then set prefs again to custom wishes because they have been reset to factory default.
