Naming Problem Using "~" in Aperture

I started using Aperture two weeks ago while I was digitizing and importing old slides (4,000 so far and I love using Aperture).
Today I noticed that one folder would only import a single picture and not the whole folder. Problem was that only one file used a "-" (dash) in front of the year. When I originally scanned the pictures I guessed that the year was 1965 and used the "~" (squiggle) mark to indicate "approximately". When I discovered that the actual year of the vacation was 1969 I changed the year, but only changed one "-", and said forget it for the rest.
Two Questions:
1. Are there other "illegal" characters that will not let Aperture import? (and why are they not allowed)
2. Is there a way to change the "~" in all the file names (i.e. batch change)?
Thanks!
JR (John-F)

Thanks, I also found out that Aperture will not import if the file extension is not one it is expecting. The last batch of 100 slides all ended up with an extension of "#0" and Aperture would not import them even though they were TIFF files.
I had no idea it was called a "tilde" or the "user home directory" link issue.
I am still curious if there are other characters that would cause problems, but at least the immediate issue is solved.
Many thanks to you and your 8 cores!

  • Is it possible to control the naming convention used by Aperture when importing photos?  If so, how

    When I import photos from my camera, I have them placed into projects based on the date the photos were taken. However, I do not like the naming convention used by Aperture as it causes the projects to sort into a non-chronologial order. The convention is MMM-DD-YYYY and I want to change it to YYYY-MM-DD. Is it possible in Aperture 3.2.4 to do this?

    In the Import  panel you can edit the preset for the file name format to "Image year - image month - image day - index" for example; the preset for folder names seems to be gone in Aperture 3,3 - at least I cannot find it any longer. You only seem to be able to enter the folder name manually in the Import panel.

  • Problem using/opening Aperture 3.0 Library in Aperture 3.5.1

    I have Aperture 3.0 Library that I opened in Aperture 3.5.1 and got this:
    I did all repairs and rebuilds, but noting works. I can't access any PS file that I have, and the exports from the library looks like this:
    Any suggestions how to save my images?
    Thank you!

    I accessed the raw files from the library , .psd and .nef, and tried to open, fail. I sent the files to a friend to try from his computer, fail again.
    Marie,
    to save the embedded jpegs from your RAW images, as Frank Caggiano recommended,  try the following in Aperture:
    Save the original RAW files to a separate folder.
    Set Aperture's Preference in the "Preferences > Import" panel to "Post Import Processing > Camera Previews".
    Set Aperture to show the Browser, and not the Viewer or Split view. That is important. The idea is to prevent Aperture from opening the image after importing.
    Now import your folder with the saved RAW files by dragging it onto the "Projects" in the Library panel.
    You should be seeing perfect thumbnails without any corruption. Drag the thumbnails from the Aperture window to a folder on your Desktop. This should give you high quality JPEGs.
    Your test image gave me a 4928x3264 high resolution JPEG.

  • Problem Using Aperture as an External Editor

    I'm having a problem using Aperture as an external editor for iPhoto. I've set preferences to "Edit in Aperture" and selected the Aperture application. When I click edit a photo in iPhoto, Aperture fires up as expected, but it does not load my photo. Nothing seems to be exported from iPhoto into Aperture.
    I can export the same photo to my desktop and then load it into Aperture fine.
    When I set preferences to edit in CS2, this works fine, only Aperture seems to be the problem.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I'm using the following versions:
    - iPhoto 7.0.2
    - Aperture 1.5.4

    If you have Photoshop CS2 then you'd have a better editor using it within iPhoto as follows:
    Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds
    Do you Twango?
    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Problem using CORBA clients with RMI/EJB servers..!!!???

    Hi,
    I have a question on using EJB / or RMI servers with CORBA clients using
    RMI-IIOP transport, which in theory should work, but in practice has few
    glitches.
    Basically, I have implemented a very simple server, StockTreader, which
    looks up for a symbol and returns a 'Stock' object. In the first example, I
    simplified the 'Stock' object to be a mere java.lang.String, so that lookup
    would simply return the 'synbol'.
    Then I have implemented the above, as an RMI-IIOP server (case 1) and a
    CORBA server (case 2) with respective clients, and the pair of
    client-servers work fine as long as they are CORBA-to-CORBA and RMI-to-RMI.
    But the problem arises when I tried using the RMI server (via IIOP) with the
    CORBA client, when the client tries to narrow the object ref obtained from
    the naming service into the CORBA idl defined type (StockTrader) it ends up
    with a class cast exception.
    This is what I did to achieve the above results:
    [1] Define an RMI interface StockTrader.java (extending java.rmi.Remote)
    with the method,
    public String lookup( String symbol) throws RMIException;
    [2] Implement the StorckTrader interface (on a PortableRemoteObject derived
    class, to make it IIOP compliant), and then the server to register the stock
    trader with COS Naming service as follows:
    String homeName =....
    StockTraderImpl trader =new StockTraderImpl();
    System.out.println("binding obj <" homeName ">...");
    java.util.Hashtable ht =new java.util.Hashtable();
    ht.put("java.naming.factory.initial", args[2]);
    ht.put("java.naming.provider.url", args[3]);
    Context ctx =new InitialContext(ht);
    ctx.rebind(homeName, trader);
    [3] Generate the RMI-IIOP skeletons for the Implementation class,
    rmic -iiop stock.StockTraderImpl
    [4] generate the IDL for the RMI interface,
    rmic -idl stock.StockTraderImpl
    [5] Generate IDL stubs for the CORBA client,
    idlj -v -fclient -emitAll StockTraderImpl.idl
    [6] Write the client to use the IDL-defined stock trader,
    String serverName =args[0];
    String symList =args[1];
    StockClient client =new StockClient();
    System.out.println("init orb...");
    ORB orb =ORB.init(args, null);
    System.out.println("resolve init name service...");
    org.omg.CORBA.Object objRef
    =orb.resolve_initial_references("NameService");
    NamingContext naming =NamingContextHelper.narrow(objRef);
    ... define a naming component etc...
    org.omg.CORBA.Object obj =naming.resolve(...);
    System.out.println("narrow objRef: " obj.getClass() ": " +obj);
    StockTrader trader =StockTraderHelper.narrow(obj);
    [7] Compile all the classes using Java 1.2.2
    [8] start tnameserv (naming service), then the server to register the RMI
    server obj
    [9] Run the CORBA client, passing it the COSNaming service ref name (with
    which the server obj is registered)
    The CORBA client successfully finds the server obj ref in the naming
    service, the operation StockTraderHelper.narrow() fails in the segment
    below, with a class cast exception:
    org.omg.CORBA.Object obj =naming.resolve(...);
    StockTrader trader =StockTraderHelper.narrow(obj);
    The <obj> returned by naming service turns out to be of the type;
    class com.sun.rmi.iiop.CDRInputStream$1
    This is of the same type when stock trader object is registered in a CORBA
    server (as opposed to an RMI server), but works correctly with no casting
    excpetions..
    Any ideas / hints very welcome.
    thanks in advance,
    -hari

    On the contrary... all that is being said is that we needed to provide clearer examples/documentation in the 5.1.0 release. There will be no difference between the product as found in the service pack and the product found in the 5.1.1. That is, the only substantive will be that 5.1.1 will also
    include the examples.

    We currently publish an IDL example, even though the IDL programmingmodel in Java is completely non-functional, in anticipation of the support
    needs for uses who need to use IDL to talk to the Weblogic server,
    generically. This example illustrates the simplest connectivity; it does not
    address how
    to integrate CORBA and EJB, a broad topic, fraught with peril, imo. I'llnote in passing that, to my knowledge, none of the other vendors attempt
    this topic either, a point which is telling if all the less happy to hear.
    For the record then, what is missing from our distribution wrt RMI-IIOPare a RMI-IIOP example, an EJB-IIOP example, an EJB-C++. In this you are
    correct; better examples are forth coming.
    Still, I would not call our RMI-IIOP implementation fragile. I would saythat customers have an understandably hard time accepting that the IDL
    programming model is busted; busted in the sense that there are no C++
    libraries to support the EJB model, and busted in the sense that there is
    simply no
    support in Java for an IDL interface to an EJB. Weblogic has nothing to doit being busted, although we are trying to help our customers deal with it
    in productive ways.
    For the moment, what there is is a RMI (over IIOP) programming model, aninherently Java to Java programming model, and true to that, we accept and
    dispatch IIOP request into RMI server objects. The way I look at it is this:
    it's just a protocol, like HTTP, or JRMP; it's not IDL and it has
    practically nothing to do with CORBA.

    Please post request to the news group...
    As I said, you must separate the idl related classes (class files and
    java
    files) from the rmi classes... in the rmic step, you must set a newtarget
    (as you did), emit the java files into that directory (it's not clearyou
    did this), then remove all the rmi class files from the class path... ifyou
    need to compile more classes at that point, copy the java files to theidl
    directly is you must, but you can not share the types in any way.
    I fear that as soon as the call to narrow succeeds, the remainingapplication will fail to work correctly because it is too difficult otuse
    an idl client in java to work.

    Hi Eduardo,
    Thanks for the help. That is the way I compiled my CORBA client, by
    separating the IDL-generated stubs from the RMI ones, but still I
    get a
    CORBA.BAD_PARAM upon narrowing the client proxy to the interfacetype.
    Here's what I did;
    + Define the RMI interfaces, in this case a StockTrader interface.
    + Implement RMI interface by extendingjavax.rmi.PortableRemoteObject
    making
    it IIOP compliant
    + Implemnnt an RMI server, and compile using JDK1.2.2
    + use the RMI implementation to generate CORBA idl, using RMI-IIOPplugin
    utility rmic;
    rmic -idl -noValueMethods -always -d idl stock.StockTraderImpl
    + generate Java mappings to the IDL generated above, using RMI-IIOPplugin
    util,
    idlj -v -fclient -emitAll -tf src stocks\StockTrader.idl
    This creates source for the package stock and also
    org.omg.CORBA.*
    package, presumably IIOP type marshalling
    + compile all classes generated above using JDK1.2.2
    + Implement client (CORBA) using the classes generated above, NOTthe
    RMI
    proxies.
    + start RMI server, with stockTrader server obj
    + start tnameserv
    + start CORBA client
    Then the client errors when trying to narrow the obj ref from the
    naming
    service, into the CORBA IDL defined interface using,
    org.omg.CORBA.Object obj =naming.resolve(nn);
    StockTrader trader =StockTraderHelper.narrow(obj); // THIS
    ERRORS..!!!
    throwing a CORBA.BAD_PARAM exception.
    any ideas..?
    Thanks in advance,

    Please see the post on june 26, re Errors compiling... somewherein
    there,
    I suspect, you are referring to the rmi class file when you are
    obliged
    to
    completely segregate these from the idl class files.

  • Implement Naming convention using code inspector

    Hi,
    We have to implement naming convention using code inspector,if anybody has already done it plz help
    me inunderstanding the problem.
    help is appreciated.

    We're also using the code inspector for naming conventions.
    Try this link:
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/library/nw/how to build a new check for the code inspector

  • What are the naming conventions used for aggregates created from Query?

    What are the naming conventions used for aggregates created from Query?

    Hi Reddy,
    As you know aggregates are baby cubes right.
    Aggregate names by default system has given as 6 digit number like 100831 but write the description by yourself.
    Here you have to remember fact table is created with the name
    like for ex: /BIC/F100831.
    while creating aggregates you can observe all options carefully till complete the creation process then after I am sure about
    your can get idea .
    If problem still persists with you let me know the same until
    get out of that.
    else assign points if this is sufficient.
    Thanks,
    Ramki

              the console, and used auto deploy to target the distributed topic to the cluster
              and create members on both servers. I deployed three message-driven EJBs (listening
              on the distributed topic) to both servers.
              After initial deployment, the topic works as expected - I post a message to the
              distributed topic, and it is received by all six EJBs. When I re-start the system
              (both managed servers and the admin server), however, the results are different.
              When I post a message to the distributed topic, it is only received by the three
              EJBs on the first server (the log shows that all EJBs have deployed successfully).
              Under Deployments/EJB Modules/Monitoring, the EJBs on the second server show "JMSConnection
              Alive" as false, while the others are true.
              Under Monitoring/"Monitor all Active JMS Destinations..." for the member topics,
              there are three consumers listed when there should be six.
              If remove and re-create the member topics, or the distributed topic, exceptions
              appear in the log saying that one or both of the member topics are "suspended".
              Is there additional configuration that needs to be done for this scenario? Are
              there any known problems related to distributed topics?
              Thanks,
              Richard

    Hi Richard,
              There are no 8.1SP1 problems that I know of.
              Check your logs for Warnings and Errors - distributed topics
              members often log an explanatory message
              when they fail to contact their fellow members.
              Also make sure that you have configured so that
              the following are true:
              All WL servers are named differently.
              All JMS servers are named differently.
              All JMS stores are named differently.
              All distributed topic members within a distributed topic are named
              differently.
              Also make sure that your cluster is coming up
              properly in the first place. If you have
              trouble doing so, you can post
              to the clustering newsgroups for info.

  • Problem using File sharing  in a small office network

    I have a problem using File sharing on an Imac and Macbook Pro.
    My office has a small network running Windows Small office file server 2003. I have one Windows 2000 PC connected to it and 3 Macs, an 2.4 gHz Intel iMac running Leopard 10.5.6 , a MBP running the same and a Mac Mini running 10.5.
    From the Finder Shared window of the Mac Mini, I can see all the computers on the network. It also used to be the case for the iMac, but the MBP could never see the Windows PC’s, not the server or the Win2000. This wasn’t a big problem as I was communicating between the Macs and using the shared printer on the iMac.
    On Monday Jan 19 the iMac was suddenly unavailable to the other 2 Macs. It was working normally on the Friday. The iMac can access the Mac Mini and copy files to it. The Mac Mini can see the iMac but cannot access it. Even trying to connect as, ends in a failed connection. I have tried rebooting, turning File sharing off and then on again to no avail.
    The iMac now also cannot see the Windows PC’s which it previously could.
    To get files from the MBP for printing, I now copy it to the Mac Mini and acces the folder from the iMac, a very tedious procedure. I don’t know why this happened and am scared that the Mac Mini is going to do the same thing.
    All three computers are also running VMware 2.0 with Windows XP pro, and from VMware the server is visible on all the computers.
    Any help will be much appreciated, I live in a small town in South Africa and the local computer suppliers have no knowledge of the Macs.
    I think that the problem with the iMac may have started after a software upgrade to 10.5.6 but I am not entirely sure.
    Thank you
    ajdk

    Well, you're current method sounds pretty good. But if you want to user a file server, hey go ahead.
    What you want to do when you centralize project files is to keep track of which one is the newest and becareful not to overwrite files with the same name. So you either have to set up individual spaces on the server (separate AFP/FTP folders maybe), or you'll need to run a file checkout service.
    The individual space is cheaper, but it's not much of a difference from backing up to the network drive. Since you have Gigabit connections, you might even opt to save ALL the user files on the server instead of just the project files.
    If you want to run a file checkout service, there's two approaches. You can run a service that can host any kind of file, or you can run a version control system for each kind of application (Photoshop, Word, etc.). Please notice, that as you read further and further along, the methods become more and more expensive and complicated. Once you get to this point, it will be necessary to purchase or build software in addition to the Mac OS X Server package.

  • Cannot connect to a named instance using SSMS from a remote machine

    Hi all,
       SQL Server.....: 2012 EE
       OS...................:  Windows Server 2008 R2
       I have a desktop machine, that i am using to administrer SQL Server (via SSMS) and to develop my SSIS solutions, but i can't connect to a named instance of my SQL Server. When i try to connect using SSMS to my named instance (myhost\DWSERVER)
    i get a huge error message:
    A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establisinh a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections.
    (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10060)
    Locally, i am able to access that named instance using SSMS, just when i try to access from another machine, the above error pops-up to me.
    I am using the SQL Server Authentication mode to connect to the named instance.
    What am i doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
       thanks for your attention.
       That's correct, i can connect to my default instance both locally and remotelly. The default instance in on port 1433. I cannot find the port used by the named instance (DWSERVER).
       Actually, i found this on the errorlog from the named instance:

  • Huge problem using apple mail while sending email to a group...

    Hey - I am quite confused... apple mail has huge problems using groups with about 150 addresses when writing and sending an email... the writing of emails is nearly impossible. Once the group name is inserted in the addressline (address book in iCloud!), apple mail uses nearly 100% CPU and further writing is nearly impossible. When sending such an email, all addresses are suddenly visible - though the box is NOT checked and the addresses should be hidden... what can I do? I use this feature (sending mails to groups) on a daily basis and cannot accept visible addresses...
    Greetings and sorry for inconvenient english...
    Christof

    How about next time you send to the group, cc yourself, or include yourself in the group. Then receive the email on the iphone, you can "reply all" in order to send to the group. If you use an imap account, you can make a new folder, call it something like "groups", and save different group emails there for the next time you need to "reply all".

  • Hi. I am just about to move from the UK to Kuwait. Will I have any problems using my iPhone 4 and able to join a local carrier using this device please?

    Hi. I am just about to move from the UK to Kuwait. Will I have any problems using my iPhone 4 and able to join a local carrier using this device please?

    If your phone is locked to a particular carrier, you must contact them to request they unlock it. Once they've taken care of that and you've followed the instructions to complete the unlock process, you will be able to use the phone elsewhere.

    After that, I tried setting permissions for the cwallet.sso file to ugo+rwx, but this leads to the same problems as mentioned above.
    My second try was to setup an external WLS 12c, but it seems to be not yet possible to connect to a WLS 12c from within jDeveloper.
    Do you have any ideas ?
    Thank you in advance for your help.
    Regards,
    Robin

    After debugging the WLS Initialisation with jdb, I recognized that there was some trouble with dependent libraries.
    In the end, I solved my problem by using another OS (Ubuntu 11.10) for development. There, the WLS works out of the box, even with 64-Bit libraries.
    Thank you for your help.
