This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • A lot of songs in my library have an excalmation point to the left of the song.  This means the song cannot be located for syncronizing even though they can be played.  I have deleted all of them and started over but the problem still exists.

A lot of songs in my library have an exclamation point to the left of the song.  Apparently this means the song cannot be located for syncronizinf to the IPOD but yet they can still be played.  I have gone so far as deleting every song and then importing them.  Same problem.  This is not just a few songs but at one time was in the hundreds.
    Has anyone experience this?

The exclamation point indicates the media is not where iTunes expects it to be.

  • HT2905 Many (most) of my songs in my library have multiplied. I now have doubles and triples of my music. I don't know why it has done this or how to fix this problem. This is a new problem since I synced a new ipod touch this week.

Many(most) of my songs in my library have multiplied. I now have doubles and triples of my music. This is a new problem that started this week when I synced my new ipod touch. Why did this happen and how do I get rid of it. I have around 1400 duplicates in my library now.

I suspect in this case the problem is caused by your library and device having downloaded independent copies of the media, so that when the library connects to the device it copies over your purchases not realizing they are already in the library.
When deduping use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks. If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.

  • How do I find unauthorized songs in my library? (previously shared from ex)

Previously in my iTunes library I had a number of songs that were shared between my ex-wife and I.
While I understand and have successfully de-authorized all songs from my library that were purchased through my account (and then reauthorized those tracks on my "purchased" list) I still run across songs from time to time that had been purchased through my ex-wife's account.
I've been replacing/repurchasing effected songs as I encounter them but I was hoping to find a more efficient way of finding all of the songs all at one time. This has really become an issue as I loaded up my library to my newest iPod. It gave me a notice of 88 songs that were unauthorized and unfortunately the list window won't expand to make for an easier time of picking out the songs I want to repurchase (I was hoping to as a worst case solution take a screenshot of an expanded window and then look through things as I then navigate the iTunes store to make my new purches).
Any assist or advice that anyone could float my way regarding this problem would be greatly appreciated. I did a search but perhaps I've not landed on the right search wording as all I got were results that pertained to users having issues with songs that had suddenly lost their authorization info but had been purchased by that user prior.
    Much thanks in advance.

    this could help:
    _*Track Down Purchases*_
This script will examine each track in a selection of tracks or a selected playlist to determine if it was purchased from the iTunes Store and then copies it to a discrete playlist named for the person who purchased it, eg: "Steve Ballmer's Purchased Music". Recognizes song, video, and audiobook purchases. Purchaser information is gleaned by examining the track's file, which, depending on file location and access speed, can take as long a second per track.

  • Problems pointing library to external HD iTunes....

First let me say I'm so sorry if this question has been asked and answered, I really don't have the time right now to search.
OK, I have two questions actually. The first is I have a 24" iMac that has two users, my husband and myself, on it. We had our entire iTunes library of songs in the Shared users folder. That way we could keep our own separate itunes music.xml and library database files in our own home/music folders. That way we can have our own playlists and own songs. The library has the complete total songs we have, which consists of about 30% of music either he or I have in our list (both not both) and 70% we both have listed. I had a MacBook which Apple just exchanged for a MacBook Pro for me. I'd like to get all of our music on to an external drive so that both the iMac and MacBook Pro (and AppleTV & Sonos) can all access the same library. I spent 8+ hours copying the 80+ GB library on to the external drive (named itunes) into a folder on the primary level called iTunes Music. I then went into my preferences/advanced/general and changed the folder location to reflect the new external location. I pressed ok, and the yes to organize, but the songs in my library do not point to the new location. I then tried to delete the original Shared/iTunes Music library to see if I could 'force' it to find, did it all again, and now all songs have exclamation points. What do I do? I cannot copy the iTunes Library.xml & ITunes Music database files onto the external also because then any differences in any one of the three separate iTunes (2 users on iMac, 1 on MacBook Pro) will not be reflected, they'll all just be exactly the same, which I don't want. I really do not want to click 80+ GBs of songs, one after another, to point each in the right place. Please help me!
The second question has to do with why I want all the music on an external to begin with. I had one library of music to start with, put it on both my iMac and my MacBook (the one that was returned), and after a year of use, I have a rat's nest of music. There could be the same song on both, but one copy now has lyrics added, the other cover art. So many adds and changes on one or the other and I'm lost. I'd like to merge the two (I used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my MacBook before it left) libraries, one that WAS on my iMac and now on my external, and the other on another external that is a clone of my MacBook. I've tried using TuneRanger, which is suppose to work, but just got a TON of duplicates. Is there anything out there that can realize by artist name and song title that's it's the same song and merge the changes together to form one library??? It's making me crazy!!

I'm very sorry you took it that way. Of course I do not think my time is more valuable than anyone else's. I have asked questions and searched this, and others forums, exhaustively in the past before asking anything... I'm even a Global Mod on another forum.
I maybe should've added that I am in the middle of moving out of the country, so my internet is only intermittent and dependent upon when I can either find a hot spot or pay to connect. I thought all of that would be wasted words compared to my problem, and did not want to offend if the question had been asked a million times before and the answer was obvious.
But now I guess I'll go somewhere else to find the answer. Thanks so much for your help!

  • TS1424 When I click to play my songs in the library they will not play and show a circle with an exclamation point in the middle of it, what does that mean and how can I get them to play?

When I click to pay my songs in the library they will not play and it shows a circle with an exclamation point within it. What does that mean, how do I fix it, and how will it play my songs again? They used to play before on my Iphone4 with no problem, but since I upgraded to the Iphone4s there is an issue.

I am having the same problem. I have just tried this. Unplug iphone > open itunes > delete all music from itunes library > close itunes > re-open itunes > add music from original folder > plug in iphone > select songs > press sync > unplug iphone using eject button onscreen > checked phone .... still nothing in music folder on phone. On itunes the "On this iphone" tab the songs remain there but greyed out.

I just updated to itunes 10.3 & iOS 6.1 and I cannot download a song to my library! I get the error "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID. You can download past purchases on the computer with just one apple ID every 90 days. This computer can be used with a different Apple ID in 75 days." WHAT??
I've never had problems before - my husband and I have used the same library for years.  My daughter also has her own Apple ID... are we going to have trouble with that, too?  Actually we have 4 Apple IDs - somewhere around 8 Apple devices... this is a huge issue for us... HELP

Just to be clear - I just bought a new song and can't download it into the library because of this error message.

  • How do I click multiple songs from my library and add them all at once to a playlist?

Before I upgraded I could simply hold 'command' and select multible songs from my library, then drag and drop into my playlist.  This was simple and sensible (which is why I made the switch from pc to mac).  Now, as near as I can tell, I can only click on the song then hover over it and redirect it to the playlist ONE AT A TIME.  This is obviously horribly inefficient.  Can anyone help...please!?

I just tested this on my itunes 11 on a macbook pro.  I have no problems doing multiple clicks using command.  Perhaps you might try rebooting.

When I download a song from iTunes into my library, it often says it has downloaded, charges me for it, and on the song in my library shows the full playing time. However, when I play the song, at around halfway through it skips to the next song?
    i'm just wondering:
    a) why it does this
and b) how to stop it doing this, because it still charges me for the song :/

If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copies of the dodgy tracks and try redownloading fresh copies. For instructions, see the following document:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the items that are not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the items, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" links next to the items.

  • I have songs in my library, but can't sync them to my nano

    Hey all!
I really hope that somebody can help me. To be honest I am not sure what I did, but I now do not have any songs on my nano. I do however have A LOT of songs in my library, but it won't let me sync them to my ipod.
"This is the message that I keep getting:
Songs on the Ipod 'my Ipod' cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist."
This isnt true tho because I do have playlists with songs in them and I can see ALL of my songs in my library.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
      Windows XP

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod and then the playlist it has been updating from is deleted. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, iTunes by default makes a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection

  • ITunes can't locate songs in my library.

It took me a while to point iTunes 11.0.2 (26) 64-bit in 10.8.3 to my existing itunes library that is also used by my 10.6.x system.  Once I did though I went to a playlist and clicked on the song and found that even though it updated my library files (Itunes Library and Itunes Library.xml) it did not actually scan the songs in the library because it couldn't locate the song.  I located the song and it asked me if I wanted it to use that info to find other lost songs which I said yes to.  It proceeded to not even find the rest of the songs in the same directory I had pointed it to.  Now I have about 4165 songs missing!  *** iTunes?!?!  I have NO MISSING SONGS under 10.6.x and I'm using the same library files and the  same library structure and everything.  IS there a way to do this other than repointing iTunes to the existing library?  Please help me or I will be forced to write iTunes off.  Which in my opinion is getting easy as the whole program is getting worse and worse from a cpl years ago.
    Thanks in advance.

The problem of tracks becoming de-linked between iTunes and the music files in your iTunes music folder happens for different reasons - this seems to come up fairly commonly in this forum.
The solution can be to locate each song in the iTunes library, as you mentioned - or, but wait, before I get to that...
trouble finding the original track in your iTunes music folder? maybe look for it under compilations, or if not using the 'group compilations preference' then look in the folder under the songs artist name, but what song artist name iTunes uses depends on what you have in the metedata tag spot for album artist or song artist. Any varyation in artist name spelling, in the menu item 'get info' metadata for any selected individual track will cause iTunes to create that as a separate artist folder in the library, even names like 'various' or any difference at all (even the word 'the' can change where in your iTunes music folder a track gets placed by iTunes). You can try to use the finder function of find file (finder munu item outside of iTunes) to locate hard to find items.
Back to how to re-link any de-linked tracks .
There may be scripts that can help re-link de-linked music files - or, at least provide you a list of such files, Scripts are easy to install and use...
at Dougs Scripts, there is one called iTunes Track CPR that might work
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=itunestrackcpr
or, if you just want a list of de-linked tracks, go to
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
and find the script called List MIA's, this will create a text file listing all de-linked tracks
