Nano 5th Gen Also Frozen

I tired connecting my 5th Gen Nano to iTunes but it does not show up? Time stopped when plugged in. No synching icon appeared in window, still have last song played in pause, and won't click into play forward or nothing, totally frozen. Have since tested 2nd Nano plugging it into laptop and it shows up as usual in iTunes. Help!

Hello Sarita Taos,
And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Before, I mention or say anything else, can I ask if you are using the same USB sync cable and plugging it into the same USB port?
Have you had a chance to work through the troubleshooting steps provided in this Apple support document? Make sure to work through each and every step as necessary and don't be afraid to try some more than once.

  • Frozen iPod nano 5th Gen

My iPod nano 5the gen has frozen like a brick. It is less than a year old, has been working perfectly, I use it daily, it was fully charged with plenty of available space. The only thing that changed is I updated iTunes to version 10.4. Actually, I also have a iPod nano 3rd gen and exactly the same thing has occurred (frozen with the screen lit, so I expect the battery will run down soon) — this tells me it is not the iPod hardware on either nano. Both nanos are in great condition and were working. iTunes 10.4 will no longer mount or recognize either iPod nano so I can't reformat or reinitialize. It seems extremely odd to have this happen to two iPods on the same day.
My Mac OS is v10.6.8 - I have installed all of Apple's recent software updates so everything is current — there are no other issues with my system.

    Hello Zillah,
    Just got my nano today
If you just got your iPod nano today and you are experiencing these kinds of issues already, I would seriously consider returning it for a replacement while there is still time.
Otherwise have you tried resetting the iPod with it connected to your Mac? Another option is to try and manually force your iPod into *Disk Mode* with it connected. Here are instructions on how to do this if need be.

And here is Apple's support document for your issue related to your iPod not showing up in Finder or in iTunes.

Doublechecking. Have you also tried a complete uninstall of both iTunes and all the other related software components and then a reinstall? If not, try the instructions from the following document:

  • 2 yrs worth of music on my ipod nano 5th gen just vanished while I was trying to add four new tracks.

Most of the music I've put on my ipod nano 5th gen in the last 2 years just vanished while I was trying to add four new tracks. Stuff from before that seems to be still there (I add stuff manually, not sync, and the ipod wasn't full). It was a bit glitchy as soon as I plugged it in to update - threw up a few error messages, decided to verify my ipod a couple of times, After that, once or twice itunes seemed to lose the ipod completely, although as far as the laptop was concerned it was definitely still connected, so i went for the 'safe to remove hardware' option and reconnected...
I'm guessing somewhere in the midst of whatever was going on there, something got confused or corrupted, but I have no way to tell what... Ipod seems to think it is using less of its capacity now, but I don't know whether to believe it or not!
Can I get this stuff back? It's not just stuff I bought from itunes, either - things I put on from cds have gone too. I have all the music either backed up or on cds, but I'm not in the same country as my cds right now - also rebuilding all of my playlists and trying to remember what went where is going to be a pain! Is there a quicker way than just doing it all over again?

  • My ipod nano 5th gen  wont play movies or videos on my ipod but plays them on itunes when i click on it the screen flashes black i have tried taking the movie off my ipod and putting it back on but it still won't work what should i do?

My ipod nano 5th gen. won't play movies or tv shows but it plays them on itunes.  When I click  on it the screen flashes black. I have tried taking the videos off my ipod and then putting them back on but it still won't work. what should i do?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • IPod Nano 5th Gen sound broken.

My iPod nano 5th Gen 16g's sound quality last night got messed up and it is horrible, makes it unuseable. Also, when you change the volume, it shows that it is changing, but the sound does not change, it is "stuck" at the same volume. I tried restarting it, reformatting it (or whatever it is called) in iTunes, and nothing works. Does anyone know how to fix this, or is it a problem with the hardware that I can't fix myself?

  • Nano 5th gen -- to eject or not to eject?

    Hi all,
Each of my daughters has a 5th gen iPod Nano.  For one of them, after I sync with iTunes, it says "OK to disconnect."  For the other -- also a 5th gen -- I have to "eject" the iPod to disconnect it.  Both are running on Windows laptops; both are configured more or less identically.  Anyone know why there's a difference?  The younger daughter's is the one that requires ejecting, and I'm concerned that she'll just yank it out without properly "ejecting."  All ideas welcome.
    Thanks!

For the proper way of disconnecting the iPod Nano 5th gen, read - iPod Nano 5th Gen. User Manual

  • My iPod Nano 5th Gene Play button is not working

My iPod Nano 5th gene's play button stopped working recently, meaning I can't pause my music and I have to use the "sleep" option to turn it off! I've had it for nearly 3 years, so the warrant is up, and I live no where near an Apple store.

Is none of the usual 5 R's of troubleshooting resolve the issue, you can be certain that it's hardware related.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano5gen/
So whether or not you live near an Apple store, you still need to take or send your iPod in for service to have an out of warranty exchange done for the prices listed on this page.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/service/prices/
You could also do some research on third party services that will actually repair the damaged component for a little less than what you would pay if you went the Apple route.  A Google search for "iPod Nano repair service" should give you a number of results to work with.

  • Driver issue nano 5th gen win 7

I bought a used nano 5th gen 8gb today and went to connect it to my laptop and got nothing on itunes. It comes up in the control panel under devices but has the excalamation point and says needs troubleshooting. I troubleshoot and it says the nano is missing drivers and cant instal them. So far ive re installed itunes and tried rebooting the computer. Ive also tried resetting the nano itself.

Try one or more of the following:
    Restart your computer
    Uninstall & Reinstall iTunes
Reset iPod (will not delete everything)
Check in My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista & 7) and see if it shows
    Restore iPod (will delete everything)
Make sure iTunes and iOS firmware is up to date

  • IPod Nano 5th Gen Battery

I just have a question that i'm hoping someone could answer. I purchased an iPod nano 5th gen about two weeks ago. Anyway when I first charged it, I left it on my computer (laptop) for about 2hours (Thought this was enough). I was unsure about how long to charge it for. I have a couple of questions:
If I didn't charge it for long enough the first time, how does this effect the battery?
I also heard you are supposed to completely let the battery die the first time to get complete life out of it.
How do you know when the iPod is completely charged? Does it say it on the screen?

    reeflingo wrote:

    It doesn't.

This won't really effect battery life too much. However it is a good idea to do from time to time to reset the calibration of the little battery indicator on the screen which can get out of whack with lots of little top offs. Letting it run until it shuts off then completely recharging and get that indicator to be a bit more accurate.
How do you know when the iPod is completely charged? Does it say it on the screen?
You won't know unless you let it charge for a long time. When the charging symbol changes from the actively charging icon (lightening bolt) to the AC Plug symbol to indicate it is charges, it typically does this at about 80% charge. It then continues to trickle charge up to 100%.

  • My nano 5th gen doesnt turn on while I charge it.. help please

my nano 5th gen doesnt turn while I charge it..help please

So I assume it doesn't power on when you disconnect it either?  What have you tried so far in terms of troubleshooting?  What happens if you try to perform a hard reset of the Nano with it still connected to the charger?  To do this, toggle the hold switch on and then off, then press press and hold both the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together long enough for the Apple logo to appear.
It could also be a faulty cable that is preventing your iPod from being able to build up or receive any sort of charge or current from the external power source.  If you have another cable laying around, swap it out to see if that helps.

  • Help me sync my ipod nano 5th gen

My new i tunes purchases will not sync to my i pod nano (5th Gen).  I did not have this problem unitl I replaced my laptop.  I am thinking it must be some sort of setting on my laptop.  My Ipod has plenty of space, its about 14 songs...  please help!  If someone can call me and walk me through it, that would be awesome!!

    Hey there TXann,
It soudns like you have purchases that will not sync over to the iPod Nano 5th gen no matter what you do. I want to recommend running through the iPod 5rs to help troubleshoot the issue here:
iPod nano (5th generation) Troubleshooting Assistant
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano5gen/
I suggest trying the sync after each step so as to minimize the amount of troubleshooting you need to do. Here is step one to get you started:
    Reset
    To reset your iPod:
    1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 10 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
    Tip:
If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Regards,
    Sterling

The music does not belong to you.  You have no legal right to it and there is no way to keep it.
