Nano and videos

G'day! I know this topic has probably been done to death, but I'm out of ideas.
I've had my 8GB Nano 5th Gen for a few months and everything is working flawlessly. There's just one thing I can't figure out.
I know that Nano supports .mp4 video files, and all the videos that I've added to my iPod are .mp4's. They're running perfectly.
I have an anime series on my external hard drive, they number 14 files and they are all .avi format. Using the same program that I used to convert my other video files, I have managed to convert all 14 .avi files to .mp4.
Now, when I tried to add these 14 files to my iTunes library to then sync to my iPod, all the files are added to the library except episode 5 & 6. I have tried reformatting these files into .mp4 again and even to .mov and adding them to the library, but they still don't show up. I thought maybe they weren't adding coz iTunes could see they wouldn't fit on the iPod, so I deleted some of my old videos to make space, but it didn't work. The converted videos that ARE showing up in the library are running well: they play when i hit 'play now' and i can rename them and everything.
when i watch the files as .avi's (in Nero Showtime), they run well and don't skip or malfuction at all.
So just to recap - I've successfully converted 14 .avi files to .mp4 but only 12 of them appeared in the iTunes movie library.
I am using a Toshiba laptop with Windows Vista. I'm running iTunes 9.
Thanks in advance!

hey planb77! thanks for the welcome, mate!
I'm using a program simply called Video Encoder. I downloaded it free from http://www.prvsoft.com/. I consider myself pretty compter savvy but encoding and translating and converting are still pretty new to me.
Video Encoder has a really simple, easy-to-use interface and all the videos that I've added to my iPod have been converted with this program. This is the first time this has happened, that the converted videos aren't showing up in the iTunes library.
When I use Video Encoder to convert Eps 5 & 6, it does it succesfully; it saves them to my folder as an .mp4. I've tried adding them to the iTunes video library but they don't come up.
I tried your suggestion of using the iTunes built-in converter but it's coming up as a gray colour on the menu so I can't select it. I've never actually used to iTunes Converter before.
I'm thinking if I should download a different converter. I don't have a credit card so I can't buy anything from the net, but I don't like doing that, anyway.
Till next time, mate! =)

  • IPOD nano and video troubles

    I am about to scream : )
I bought my wife an new 4g nano for her birthday. I spent about 5 hours loading music into iTunes. Hooked up the nano and it worked just fine. I then recieved my 30g video ipod 2 days ago. Both worked just fine and I loaded the same music (library) onto both (10-12-05 install). I wanted to then load some video clips for work and found out about the new H.264 codec and reluctantly upgraded quicktime to pro so that I could convert my .mov files to ipod .mov files. After attempting to upoload the video is basically when my grief started. I have spent over 12 hours installing, uninstalling, rebooting, deleting registry settings, setting processes to auto....pretty much anything found in these forums. So basically i had them both working and now the 30g shows up as a disk, but is not recognized in iTunes. The pod just seems to freeze and I can't even resotre it to factory since the updater/restore freezes!! I even downloaded the new software on my laptop to try a restore on a different system to no avail. As a last check, after all the re-installations etc, my wifes nano still connects and shows up fine in itunes and i can add or dlete files. Anyone know why this situation could be causing a problem. Yes, I even tried to assigne a different drive letter. What should I do..return it? BTW, I can still turn it on and the original music I uploaded is there and still works.

I found my issue (after 18 straight hours of trying everything found on the boards here) by comparing my 4g nano and my 30g video ipod when they were both connected at the same time. The nano has never had a problem and works great. The 30g has all kinds of problems..worked great for a few days, then i upgraded to quicktime pro and tryed to upload a video and thinngs went south from there. Briefly, with both hooked up and itunes no longer recognizing the 30g (but windows showing it as a recognized device) I compared them by using the "manage" selection (right click my computer) and then going to Disk management. By comparing the 2 ipods, the nano showed it had a 4G FAT32 format where as the 30g showed it was not formated at all! I opted to wipe it and use a quick FAT32 format. Previously I could not even restore the factory settings with the ipod update utility because it would simply freeze. At this point the utility did not freeze and it allowed me to restore. The first time I did this, itunes recognized my ipod and I figured to test it by loading a small video file. Windows gave me some kind of cryptic error about a "read/write failure and all data being lost" and after this occured the ipod would not be recognized by itunes. Back to disk management and it showed that the 30g table was once again unformatted. I have no idea how this would occur without me selecting to wipe the drive somehow. I repeated all the above steps again (formatted) and at this point have uploaded about 2G of music and 1 movie and have not had any further issues. Something is apparently very wrong and although it is working at the moment, I don't have a ton of confidence in this product at the moment. It took about 18 hours of messing with it and alot of frustration. I really like this thing when it works, but this is ridiculous. Does apple even bother to test this stuff on a PC!! Anyway, hope that helps some of you. Judging from the number of issues here (all sounding the same) hopefully it can be determnined what exactly is causing these issues.

  • The Nano and Video

I had a 2nd gen Nano and yesterday I bought the 5th gen Video iPod. There is nothing wrong with the Nano, I just wanted the upgrade. I plan on using the nano at the gym can I still sync the nano when I need to?

  • Ipod nano and video downloads?

I was just wondering if I could still download and listen to a video on my ipod nano. I really want to put Jojo's "Too little, too late" on my nano so i can listen to it, i dont care if i see it, since the song won't be available until october for an audio download. Is this possible to do or will it screw up my nano too badly?

Don't know for sure, but I don't think the iPod will be damaged. I think all that'll happen is that either you won't get the file onto the iPod (unless you you it in diskmode), but in no way will you be able to listen to the song. It's in a format the Nano won't recognize.

  • Can I use a nano and video on same iTunes computer and library?

If I have an ipod Video and I currently download songs from my iTunes to iPod, is it possible to just select a certain folder in iTunes to have put on my husband's nano. I was told to just changet he preferences in iTunes but do I need to do anything with the nano before doing that...it is still in the box!
Thanks in advance...I just need explicit directions so I don't mess this up.
I might try setting up a different user name for him and transfering my library into his but I am not sure if I can do that...
    Thanks

  • 3g nano and video podcasts

when i play some video podcasts on the nano they just have a black screen witht he audio running in the background. Iv played them all on the pc and work so whats the problem
any solutions would be greatly appreciated
    thanks

I had this exact problem on my iPod nano 3g and have cracked it. I run an IBM thinkpad with Windows XP and currently iTunes 7.4.3.1
Here was the problem: Characters in the file name. Mine had [2007] and a - hyphen or minus sign. I'm not sure which caused the problem, but just going into "get info" for the movie and ReNaming the file to movie13 or whatever solved the problem. Then I got video and audio and didn't do ANY other conversion of the file to make it work.
Simple but true. Apple should sort this out, I thought I had a codec or conversion problem and had tried a zillion type of file conversion programs from .avi to .mp4
Best wishes to all iPod nano owners.

  • Can I download a free exercise video to my computer (not from Itunes)and then  to my ipod nano, and then show it on my tv, and if so how?

Can I download a free exercie video (not from Itunes) to my computer, then to my ipod nano, and then show it on my tv?

If you have a compatible video file, you can add it to your iTunes library by dragging it to the iTunes window, or by using the command
iTunes menu bar -> File -> Add to Library...
If the video is in a format that iTunes can play, it should be imported and appear as a new item in the iTunes Movies library.
It may not be playable on the nano directly, because of its format.  For example, if it's "HD," the resolution is too high for a nano's screen.  If it plays in iTunes, but not on the nano, you can use the command to covert it. Select the item in a list and then
iTunes menu bar -> File -> Create New Version -> Create iPod or iPhone Version
That version should play on an iPod nano.  NOTE:  Some videos downloaded from the iTunes Store cannot be converted to a lower resolution format, because they have DRM (copy protection).

  • No audio on video on just iPod Nano and Clasic

    Hi Folks,
I have recently ran into an issue that has me a bit confused. I have had a couple viewers of our video podcast complain that they are unable to hear the audio on thier devices, it plays fine in iTunes just not on their iPod. One is viewing on an 5th gen. iPod Nano and the other on a 2nd gen iPod Classic. The confusing part is that I have tested on an iPod Touch and iPad and I am not experiencing the issue on those devices.
The issue popped up when we changed over our encoding hardware from an Elgato to a Matrox MXO2LE using their MAX technology. However, the files are being encoded the same way, ACC LC at 128Kbps. The only noticeable difference was that the Elgato was encoding at 44.1kHz and the MAX at 48kHz. As far as I can tell both are supported on the iPods.
    Any thoughts?
    Mike

I'm afraid I have no experience of video on any iPod: could I suggest you ask in the iPod Forum where you could very possibly get someone to test the actual files.

  • Nano and Gen 5 30gb Video

I also use both a nano and 5th gen, they're great! I use both on the same itunes library. Since I have more stuff in my itunes than will fit on the nano, what I have done is create a playlist for the nano and set my nano to only automatically update from that playlist.

  • Cannot delete music from iPod nano (latest generation).  Have already selected "Manually Manage music and videos" but delete is unavailable from right click or Edit.

I have done everything I've seen recommended for deleting music (jncluding "manually manage").  Thanks for the assistance!!!

Did you Apply the change after selecting (checking the box for) Manually manage music and videos?
With the latest iTunes, if the sidebar is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
In the sidebar, select the iPod under DEVICES.  Click the toggle (to the left of iPod) to drop down the iPod's content list, indented under iPod.  Click on Music there.  Over to the right, the list of songs on the iPod is shown.  You can select songs there, right click on them, and select Delete from the contextual menu.  You can also select songs there, go up to the menu bar, and select Delete under Edit.  You can also select songs there, and just press the Delete key on the keyboard.
If you want to use automatic syncing, which is far more convenient than the manual method, and easily manage content on the iPod (add and remove songs), please post back.

Please help me..my teens are breathing down my neck to use my iTunes account. What is the best way to get three nano devices for three children up and running with iTunes? Do I make different accounts, or share one very large library, or what? We have different tastes in music...

I don't know if Windows Vista does this, but in XP you can set up different user accounts and then each account can have its own iTunes library.
Go to the start menu, then control panel, then user accounts, then create new account.
I have a nano and my sister has a mini and that's how we keep ours seperate. We can't sync or charge them at the same time so it would help if you got a wall charger of three (if you don't already have one).
