I installed the latest version of iTunes software. I adopted the five R's approach to resolve my issue. I have wanted to restore the iPod but this option is not available in iTunes, since the iPod is not recognised by the software.

I think a more comprehensive format might solve the problem. Anyone with any ideas.

  • Check this fix:  If nano is recognized by WinX, but not by iTunes/Updater

I'm just posting this here because it took me a long time to dig up this fix. This problem appears with both windows 2000 and XP that I know of. Since windows is installed on my D: drive, when I plug in my nano, it kept being mapped to C:
It worked fine as a mass storage device, but iTunes/Updater wouldn't recognize it. I (like everyone else) tried the 5 R's, yada yada, but it turns out I needed to change the drive letter to anything other than C. Bingo, that was all. The steps are here: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
I hope this bump helps some of you.

    hiya!
okay, we'd better check on the usual suspects.
first have a look inside your "My Computer". is the ipod showing up in there?
    if it isn't, see:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear
iPod missing in "My Computer" or in iTunes on Windows
    if it is, see:

  • My new ipod nano appears on my desktop but not in iTunes

Initially the setup of the iPod nano work perfectly on the iMac, it came up in iTunes and synced everything without a problem. I then plugged it into my Macbook Pro just to charge it and it came up in iTunes yet I never synced it.
Later I went to sync music onto the nano from the iMac and it is appearing on my desktop, not in iTunes. I have tried reseting the computer, changing USB ports, restting the iPod and nothing has worked. What should I do??

    Hello!
You need to put your iPod into Forced Disk Mode and restore it using iTunes.
Try resetting your iPod by following these steps:
    1. toggle to hold switch on and then off again
    2. press the Menu and Center/Select buttons together until the screen goes black (should take no longer then 30 seconds)
    3. as soon as you see the Apple logo let up on the buttons and press down the Center/Select and Play/Pause buttons until a checkmark appears on the screen.
    4. connect your iPod to your computer and restore thru iTunes

  • Nano shows in "My computer" but not in Itunes

I've done everything I can find on the website, but still can't get Itunes to see the ipod. The computer can see it and it charges, but I can't do the last step in the "5 R's" on the site since I can't restore factory settings without I-tunes seeing the device.
    1) is there a way to restore factory settings manaully (without i-tunes)?
    2) A "Bootex" file has appeared on my ipod (when I look at it in my computer). The bootex files states that "volume is dirty" and that it has "recovered" 4 files. Is this the cause of my issue? How do I fix it?

Are you running some sort of antivirus/antispyware software that is scanning the iPod and leaving this "Bootex" file? If you are, set your preferences not to scan iPods (if you have enabled disk use on your Nano you will have to set it not to scan removable drives), right click on your Nano in My Computer or Device Management, select disk management, and format your Nano (FAT32, not a quick format) and while you are in the disk management area, give your Nano a much higher drive letter like M or P or Z.
After this Restore it in iTunes.

  • NANO SHOWS UP IN DESKTOP BUT NOT IN ITUNES

I have a Mac OS X computer. When I plug in my iPod nano to the computer, it shows up on the desktop, but it will NOT show up in iTunes!!

If you use USB instead of FireWire to connect, it won't appear in iTunes unless you update to Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later. If you can't update your software, then use FireWire instead. Note: iPod shuffle, iPod nano, iPod (5th generation), and iPod classic can only sync via USB.

  • My iPod is appering in my computer, but not in iTunes

I recently installed iTunes 10 and today I installed 10.1, but neither is recognizing my iPod touch. I have tried everything support has sudjected, including reinstalling iTunes twice. Today, I tried what another user had sudjected, by plugging in my iPod while holding down the home button, and this showed the "plug into iTunes" screen like the first time you plug in a new iPod, but about ten minutes later it was back to the charging green battery screen, and still not showing up. Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Disconnect any usb devices except keyboard and mouse. Reboot your computer. Turn off all antivirus, spyware, zone alarm, firewall, etc. Then:
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPod touch, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the the iPod touch to turn off.
    * If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off, release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
    3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the touch. When you reconnect the USB cable to the touch, the device should power on.
Note: If you see an image of an empty battery with socket to lightening bolt symbol, let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure the battery has some charge and then start with step 2 again.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When a screen with a Usb cord pointing the iTunes symbol appears you can release the Home button.
    5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see alert text: "iTunes has detected an touch in recovery mode..."
    6. Use iTunes to restore the device.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see [this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1495] and its related links.
Most of the time this should work, although it make take a few attempts. If it doesn't and you can try it on a different computer. Or bring it to an Apple store - I don't know if they charge to restore or not since I've never been to one and am not affiliated with Apple.
After this, the only other option is [DFU mode restore|http://www.podzombie.com/2010/01/using-dfu-mode-to-fix-ipod-touch-and-i phone-errors>.

I just bought a new laptop and my ipod nano will not stay connected to my computer. When I first connect the ipod it starts to sync on my ipod but not on itunes. The ipod is initially connected to my computer, I can see it when I look on devices in my computer. However, when it finishes syncing it is no longer detected to my computer. I cannot transfer any of my songs to my new laptop because of this. I have tried to reinstall itunes, reset my ipod and use a different port. None of these things worked. Any ideas?

I haven't used this iPod Nano with my G5 since it was new. Today I connected it, and it shows up on the desktop, but it doesn't appear in iTunes. • Ipod nano mounts on desktop but not in itunes

A brand new ipod nano 4gb, ordered from the online Apple store & a christmas present to my wife, mounts on her powerbook G4 osx 10.3.9, but not in itunes 6.0.1. The latest ipod updater 05-11-17 is installed. I have restored the nano, removed iPodDriver.kext and downloaded and re-installed 10.3.9. Everything seems to work on my G5 which I used to restore the nano using ipod updater 05-11-17.
What can I try next short of contacting Apple for a new ipod nano?
1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 15" silver powerbook   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB DDR SDRAM

OK, I restarted the powerbook with the ipod plugged into the computer. Previously I had been plugging the iPod into an active computer. And lo and behold it is now recognized by iTunes. I'm not marking the Question as answered, because it may not work next time.

  • 2. gen iPod nano sometimes shows up in Finder, but not in iTunes

    Hi!
My brand new 8GB iPod nano that I got for christmas sometimes seems to have problems connecting to iTunes. Every now and then (perhaps 1/4 of the time?) it will show up in Finder, but not in iTunes (I haven't enabled "disk mode" yet, so when it shows up in iTunes, it is not visible in Finder). Also, on one or two occasions, it showed up in iTunes, but wasn't recognized.
Whenever this happens, I just eject the iPod from Finder and disconnect it, and on the second try (on one occasion - third try) it will show up in Finder.
What could this be? Bad connectors/cable - or iTunes just not very reliable?
    MBP 15" C2D 15" 2.33/2/160 - MB (white) 2/2/120 - PBG4 12" 1.33/1.25/60   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

These problems return every now and then.
In addition, if the iPod is connected, is shown in iTunes and has already synced properly, it will sometimes reset if I try an additional manual sync from the File menu. It's a rather benign error, since it will connect and sync as soon as the iPod has restarted.
I also had one freeze of the iPod while playing.
This is my first iPod, and I'm used to computers that run for months or years without a reboot. Is it just normal for an iPod to freeze/reset every now and then? My Nokia phone does it too, but then I expect more from Apple...

  • 6th gen nano appears on desktop but not in itunes

6th gen nano appears on desktop when I plug it in, but not in itunes.  I've never set my ipod to disk mode.  It never did this before, why all of a sudden? Having the same problem when I plug my girlfriends nano into my computer too.  Any advice?  Both my OS and iTunes are at the most up to date versions.
    Thanks, Matt

Thanks for the response... that still didn't work for me but this latest iTunes update seems to have fixed the problem!
