Nano as a flash drive?

Hi everyone,
I heard somewhere that while most iPods have a spinning disk, Nanos are more like a flash drive. Because of that, after awhile Nanos won't hold as much music. I'm sorry if this isn't making much sense, this is just something I heard recently and I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything like this, and if this is true.
I also apologize if there has already been a topic on this subject. I did try to search through the recent topics, but I couldn't really find any topic asking this same question.
Thank you very much.

That is not true at all. The nano's memory will never decrease, if that is what you mean.
I think you might have mixed that and the battery up. After a while, Lithium Ion batteries begin to lose their ability to hold charge.

  • Nano as a flash drive between Mac and windows

I intended to use the nano as a flash drive. I use Apple at home, but have to use windows at work. My other flash drives have no problem moving files between both. But when I connected the nano at work, Windows gave me some initialize message. Would that delete my data on nano? I just disconnected and wait for your help.
How can I use the nano as a flash drive between my mac and windows at work?

Check what the iPod's format is; if the iPod nano is in Mac format, it can't be used on a PC which doesn't have third-party software such as MacDrive installed onto it. Initializing or restoring your iPod will erase everything on it.

  • Can you use your ipod nano as a flash drive?

    Hi,
I read somewhere that someone used their ipod as a flash drive and just wondered if this is possible? If so how do you transfer files from your Mac to your ipod and vise versa?

Thanks I found the features guide here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/index?page=search&src=support_site.psp.ipodnano.sear ch&q=iPod%20nano%20features%20guide
as I have no idea where mine is and it shows how to do it on page 45. I'll try it out and post back if I have any problems.
The only downside is I have to clear things off my nano to use it as a disk drive. Thinking maybe having a USB Flash drive is a better idea than using my nano this way. It's great to know it's possible to do this though if I need to.

  • Using Nano as flash drive...

I used my 2nd gen nano as a flash drive to transfer music from my PC to my new mac. I deleted the files once they were transfered but when my ipod is connected all the empty space still shows up full as "other". What is the deal with that? Is there any way to fix this without reformatting?

Delete items from the iPod "drive" then empty the Mac system trash to really erase them from the drives, of which your iPod is one of.

  • IPod nano appears as USB drive, but unrecognised by iTunes for Windows

I have a video iPod, and my daughter has a iPod nano. Yesterday, when I tried to load new songs on the nano, iTunes failed to recognize it. I tried the 5 R's -- I am able to update the nano using the iPod updater, and I tried updating, as well as restoring. the iPod updater is able to see the nano and I was able to restore. So now I have a nano that I am able to navigate the menus of, but thee is no music on it of course.
The nano is not recognized by a second computer as well. The video iPod is recognized by both computers, so I suspect the problem is with the nano.
We use the same user account for both devices, and it has worked without a flaw for the past 2 months.
    Does any one have suggestions?
    Kumar.
Pentium 4, 2 GHz, 512 MB Windows XP

    Problem solved
The fact that the Nano did not work on both computers was a coincidence.
Apple uses a special driver for the iPod disk (I suppose there is a packet filter or some special function in their driver that must sit between iTunes and the standard flash drive driver).
I updated the Nano again, and deleted as many of the hidden USB drivers as possible from the device manager. Then I connected the Nano to a new USB port and that did the trick.
I have not tried attaching the Nano to the old USB port yet.
Windows is terrible at managing drivers -- there is no systematic way of figuring out associations between drivers and software components. Perhaps someone from Apple could post a detailed method paper on how to identify and get rid of drivers installed when you use iTunes and the iPod, so that Windows can pick it up again.
When I connected my video iPod yesterday, it prompted me to update it, but I am the wiser now. I am going to avoid updating iTunes or the iPod software as far as possible.

  • How do I get my library off of my flash drive onto my new computer?

I just got a new computer today, so this morning I made sure to put everything that has to do with itunes on my flash drive so I could transfer my library onto the new computer. I have tried following many steps on how to move a library from an old computer to a new one, but so far I have only recovered purchased songs. I have plugged in my flash drive into the new PC and I can see the itunes library file, but when I click it, nothing happens. I hhave installed itunes on the new PC and like I said only some of my songs are in it. When I plug my ipod nano into my new PC, I get a message asking if i want to scan and fix my ipod. I have hit "continue scanning", but if I do hit scan and fix, will that erase all the songs on my ipod? I really can't have that happen, so I'm trying to be very cautious on what I do. Also, I have my ipod plugged in and in itunes I hit the arrow next to my ipod and it shows the drop down menu including my music. All of the songs that are in my old library and currently on my ipod are there, but they're all grayed out. I've tried copying the music folder to my ipod and it says I don't have enough space, but like I said, I am not going to erase all of the songs on my ipod. If someone could please help me out I'd really appreciate it! By the way I have Windows 7.

This is how you should have done it. I don't know if you still have the files to do it this way:
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you use iTunes default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • My macbook wont sync the music i downloaded onto a flash drive and onto the mac book what do i do?

My macbook wont sync the music i downloaded onto a flash drive and onto the mac book what do i do?

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • Ipod nano as a hard drive?

Can you use the Ipod nano as a hard disk on your computer like the other Ipods since it uses a flash drive?

OF course it has FAT32 formatting and by going into Ipod preferences you can select to "enable disk use" and it should appear as a mounted drive in My Computer (for windows)

  • Hard drive vs. flash drive durability

I want to buy one of the $249 iPods. Both the 8Gb Nano and the 30Gb Video are priced there. While it seems obvious to buy the larger capacity (size difference doesn't matter to me), I am concerned about the lifespan of the moving hard drive in the Video.
Can anybody compare their durability for me or point out any other points I am missing? I doubt that I will use the video capability very much.

I think it all comes down to how and where you plan on using it. If you plan on using it primarily while running or cycling, the flash drive would be a better option. If you care more about having lots of space (and you said you didn't) or about watching video, than the 30 gig would probably suit you better. Another consideration is size. Some people want a very small, pocketable device, other don't mind the larger, heavier 30 gig.
From your description of your needs, I say the Nano sounds right.
For what it's worth, I have a first generation 5 gig iPod that, though it really only works when plugged as the battery is shot, is still working. I used to run with it. The only iPod I've ever had to send in for repair was my 60 gig photo. The headset jack went bad while it was under warranty. I now use a first generation shuffle for running as it's just more comfortable than my 60 gig video. I don't treat any of them with extra special care. They've all been dropped (in cases) more than once.

  • TS1363 When I plug my ipod into the usb port of my desktop, It will not recognize that anything is plugged into it.  However it does recognize my flash drives, so trying to resolve my problem.  Please help...

When I plug my ipod into my desk top my computer will not recognize the ipod in the usb port.  I checked my usb port with one of my flash drives and it works fine.  My ipod is in stuck in recovery mode, so has to be gone thru on itunes.  Please help me

Yes, I think so...  But what's odd here (to me) is that it actually matters what song the iPod was playing before being connected to that USB port.  What happens if you connect the iPod when it is not playing any song?  It seem like either the car audio system knows where to look for the iPod's song files, or it doesn't.
If you have a USB flash drive, try putting a few song files on it, and connecting it to that USB port.  That's probably the primary reason for that USB port, so customer can attach USB flash drives with song files.  If that works, and you can properly browse and play songs from the USB flash drive, you should just get a $5 8GB USB flash drive, fill it with your "car songs," and leaving it connected to the car audio system.  That would be more convenient that remembering to connect and disconnect your nano all the time, and less wear-and-tear on the nano.

If you have AppleCare and/or iPod Nano is still under warranty, give them a call.  If not, take the computer to your local Apple Store or AASP.  The staff will tell you what is wrong w/it and let you know if it can be fixed after it is examined.
