Nano charges on usb1.1

When I got the nano at an Apple store the salesman told me that I had to get a wall charger for my older powerbook because it does not have usb2. But now after using it I see that it most certainly does charge via the usb port.
What gives? I feel like I was scammed into a $30 charger that I did not need.

My suggestion would be to take it back. I tried to buy a backup firewire wall plug to use to simply charge my video iPod with & the store rep said no they don't charge with firewire. I went home, printed the support article to backup what I knew was correct, went back & said I'm returning the USB as I was told firewire didn't work to charge. The store manager apologized & said they were still learning about the vPods & refunded my money.

will a ipod nano charger work with a new ipod touch?

If you want to charge a touch gen 4 or less, then absolutly (It just might take a little longer than one specifically for the touch, because of watt dierences I think). I'm not sure about gen 5

  • Should I get a non-Apple Brand Nano Charger?

I am going on vacation in a few weeks and want to take my Nano with me. I won't be taking a laptop so I need to buy a charger.
I found this one http://www.emtcompany.com/products/tcipodw.htm for $6.95 with free shipping. Am I taking a chance with this one or am I better off purchasing an Apple-branded charger for $29.95?
I like the fact that this one doesn't need my sync cable as it has one built in.
    Opinions?

I have seen other posts about this and they mention using your existing cable and a powered USB hub. These are usually very cheap from your local computer/electronics store. The thing to check is the size of the hub's power pack versus the special Nano charger you've seen.

  • 2nd Gen Nano: Charges on Firewire, but not on USB.  Any clues?

2nd Gen Blue iPod Nano will charge on a Firewire connection, but not on a USB connection.
Thus...when connecting this Windows Format iPod to my PowerPC G4 through a USB cord, it won't charge OR interact with iTunes in any way.
Since it's a factory settings iPod,
it is well charged with zero content
I've reset the iPod (Center + Menu for 6 seconds) several times...it rebuilds, restarts, but is "still blind" to the USB connection (ie, won't charge; won't connect to iTunes).
I've also tried 4 different USB cords (which work fine with other iPods) with my "still blind" Nano, but....no go!
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    Hmmm....Tried this; no go.
When plugging the USB 2.0 cord into a USB port, the iPod screen lights up, but the charging icon does not come on; and iTunes does not "see" the iPod. The iPod eventually sleeps. Changing ports (with nothing else plugged in other than power) wakes up the iPod, the screen LCD comes on, times out and goes off....and then the iPod sleeps. (Again...when I plug this iPod into a Firewire cord, the charging icon comes on and the iPod actually recharges. Its the only way to keep the iPod charged while I keep testing it).
    Hmmmm....

  • IPod nano charges but is not recognized

    Good morning.
Im writing this topic, because I saw all the topics about this same problem, and none of them solved mine. I hope you can help me on this, so here is the thing:
When I connect my iPod to the 2.0 usb port, the ipod lights its screen, charges, but neither windows or iTunes recognizes it.
    Ive tried going to:
    1. Going to control painel
    2. Double clicking System icon
    3. Hardware < Manager of Dispositives < Universal USB thing
When Im there, I disabled the options at USB ROOT HUB on "Computer can turn it of dispositive to minimize waste of energy", as I have read on the other article to do, but it didnt help.
Here is something that Ive tried everything to understand, but I cant: In the same place (Hardware - System - Control Painel), when the iPod is connected at the computer, my ipod appears on that list! But it comes with an Exclamation Point right next to its name, and it says that it needs an software to make it useful.
    The real message is:
The drivers for this dispositive are not installed.(Code 28)
To reinstall the drivers of this dispositive, click at 'Reinstall Driver'.
Doesnt iTunes install it or whatever? What can I do to get my iPod recognized by the iTunes and computer, and then sync my songs?
    Please, I need someone's help!
    Thanks a lot,
    Andre.

Did you ever find a solution for your problem. It is exactly the same as mine and I'm so frustrated with all the problems after spending so much money for something that is supposed to be fun.
I too have done everything suggested and still no answer. My computer will not install the driver or recognize the ipod exists.
If you did find an answer, please email me with anything you think may help.
    Thanks

  • IPod Nano not recognized by Mac (latest software upd), but nano charges

iPod Nano has worked great for the past year and has downloaded music files from the mac with no problems in the past. However, since loading the latest ipod update on my Powerbook G4, which has the latest OS X software, the mac does not recognize the nano. When plugged into the USB port, it charges the nano, but when I go to the iTunes Preferences and click on the ipod icon, it says that no iPod is connected. Is this a wire or hardware problem or a software problem?

No, but this is one of the thoughts I had relative to the problem. The local Apple store does not have any extra cables for the nano and the closest other Apple store is an hour away -- if they have an extra cable!! My guess is that it is a cable problem since I tried it on a PC with iTunes and had the same problem.
    Thank you for yuour thoughts.

  • Does the ipod nano charge quickly when connected to a mac?

    hi everyone.
I recently switched from windows to a macbook. i noticed that my ipod nano(second generation) charges quickly when connected to the mac as compared to when i connected it to my pc? is this possible or is there something wrong with my ipod? it is 11 months since i got my nano. kindly help.
    this is my first post
    Thanks in advance

I assume you're talking about using the Apple cable with either component or composite cables. On a non-HD TV, the quality is quite good. I'm not sure what you mean about picture size. It doesn't letter box anything, if that's what you mean. Used to do it a lot when I went away for the weekend. It was an easy way to take iTunes rental movies with me and watch them on a big screen. I've never tried with my HD TV because i haven an Apple TV and there's no need.
    Best of luck.

  • Help. about the ipod nano charged with usb 1.1

i just got the ipod nano. now i am charging it. according to the mannul, it will take 3hr to charge it by usb 2.0.
considering i only have usb 1.1, so my question is how long it wil take to charge the nano. until i wait for 6hr and the screen still shows do not disconnect. i can transfer the music and image to the nano. thanks.

Sorry, I'm not really sure how long the charge will take with USB 1.1, but I'd guess it would be way longer that "twice as long".
The "do not disconnect" will show as the display until you eject the iPod thru iTunes.
Now here the tricky part since I don't have a 1.1 USB. If you eject it thru iTunes, I believe the screen will show if it is still charging or "charged". So when you know you need to charge it, plug in to the `puter, then eject and leave it connected, to see what happens.
I do recommend getting the USB power adapter. For USD30.00, it is really worth it. Well, for me at least. I charge regularly (4 times a week) and only plug into my computer to add more music (maybe once a month). Your usage may be different, but it is so easy to come home and just plug it into the dock (plugged into the wall).

  • IPod touch 2G with Nano charger?

    Hi there..
My girlfriend just bought an iPod touch 2G and it didn't come with a charger to charge from the wall.. only the usb cable. I own an iPhone and now don't have use of my IPod Nano 2G charger that I used to use. Will this charger work for her Ipod touch???
    Thanks for your help.

It does.. That's great. I just wasn't sure if the output wattage was the same for all of them but I guess if it's using usb like the touch then it should work.. Cheers for the help.

  • 2nd gen nano charging, not recognized by PC

I've had an old 2nd gen nano for years, it's always worked great.  Now neither of my two computers will recognize it (via USB), either on iTunes or My Computer or in Device Manager.  The iPod charges and will even play music as if it were plugged into a car or wall outlet rather than a computer, but it won't sync to iTunes.
    I've tried:
    -resetting it (several times)
    -downloading the newest iTunes software
-putting the iPod in disk mode
-using multiple USB cords and ports on two different computers
-Apple troubleshooting assistant for 2nd gen nano (http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/nano2gen/)
I'd like to uninstall the iPod driver, but I don't know how since the iPod doesn't show up in Device Manager.
I live over an hour away from the nearest Apple store, so I'm waiting to take it in for service as a last resort.  Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi
I had the same issue with my Late 2009 Mac mini running Mavericks and iTunes 12. When I connected my 2nd generation iPod shuffle it would blink amber once then do nothing. This seems to be a common problem with the iPod shuffle and newer versions of Mac OS X (10.6 and up) and iTunes albeit with somewhat varying symptoms but the same overall problem syncing the iPod with iTunes.
The predominant go-to solution is to give the iPod more power by either connecting the iPod directly to a USB port on the Mac or by disconnecting all other USB devices. On paper this makes sense.
What worked for me, however, was the opposite. After trying to solve this problem for hours (weeks, months), I had success ONLY after adding a low-powered 4-port USB hub to the chain between the iPod and the Mac. I suspect this had the effect of throttling the power supplied to the iPod from the Mac. I was able to perform a restore on the iPod then sync my music over.
I can't tell you much about the USB hub except that it is running at USB 1.1 speeds (12 Mb/sec). In theory a USB 1.1 extension cable should also do the trick. You might even be able to use the USB hub in old wired Apple USB keyboard. I will attach a photo of the hub I used to this post for greater clarity.
    I really hope this helps.

  • 2nd Gen nano charges but won't sync

Hi - we've got a otherwise well-behaved 2nd Gen iPod nano (model number A1199) that now won't sync - but will charge up - when plugged into a mac. I noticed that there was a fair bit of crud at one end of the nano's 30-pin socket (wife + handbag + nano = crud in socket) which I've attempted to blow/brush out, but no change.
Q1. Is it likely that the contacts are irrevocably gunged up/damaged by exposure to handbag-crud?
Q2. Any experience or tips out there regarding successful cleaning out of a 30-pin socket?
    Thanks.
    Martin

Did you try syncing with the cable plugged directly into the phone (without the dock)? I find the dock completely unnecessary and just charge/sync with the cable only and my phone flat on the desk beside me. At least if it works that way you know the dock is the culprit.
    Good luck!

  • Nano charging via in car Griffin's firewire "powerpod"

I have a Griffin powerpod fireware charger in my car that I used for years on my 20gb ipod. I'm wondering if it will charge my ipod nano. I realized the nano is USB, etc etc...but am curious if the powerpod will deliver power to charge the battery and if it can will it do it without somehow frying the nano?
    Thanks....

I just plugged the firewire cable into my powerbook and the nano. It does charge the nano but pops up a screen on the nano saying firewire synching isn't supported (duh! it is a USB device afterall)...but it does charge. I'll assume the same is true in my car via the powerpod.
    Thanks.
