Nano doesn't appear on desktop or iTunes after HD wiped, 10.2.8 reinstalled

Initialized the hard drive and reinstalled 10.2 from CD, then upgraded back up to 10.2.8 where I had been before the crash.
Lost my whole purchased library, of course, but almost all had been burned to CDs.
Now, when re-connecting iPod nano with USB, it doesn't show up on the desktop or in the iTunes window. I'm running the latest version of iTunes, 6.0.3
When I connected it, and it didn't show up, I disconnected it, and it froze up. I did the reset thing with select and menu button which seemed to work fine.
Now that my computer is back up and running 10.2.8, what do I have to do to get the nano and iTunes to talk to each other again?
I saw something about a "restore" on the support page, but I sure don't want to erase everything on the iPod. I would have no idea how to back up or save the songs on the iPod.
Is there just some setting that got wiped off when I initialized my HD, that I have to restore?

Restoring the iPod may well fix your problems, but you're correct that it wipes the iPod clean. You might want to try less drastic things first, such as a Reset. There are ways to get songs from the iPod back to the computer (third party programs) but they will require that the iPod show up on the desktop first.

  • IPod nano does NOT appear on Desktop or iTunes

My mac gave me a message saying Itunes, and quicktime need to updated. I did so and my mac restarted. Afterwards my iPod Nano no longer appears on my desktop or in iTunes. (Actually my nano only appears when iTunes is closed.
When I remove my iPod Nano then there is a message saying a device was removed improperly.
I also have a 30 GB iPod. It will appear on the desktop and in iTunes. My iPod 8 GB Nano will not appear on my G5 ( I have two. One is running 10.5.2 and the other is running 10.4.11. Both with iTunes 7.6. The problem appears to be centered around 8 GB iPod Nano.
I also plugged my ipod nano into firewire that plugs into an adapter that plugs into electric socket. AND still no response from my iPod Nano.

  • Can't restore iPod because it doesn't appear on desktop

I connected my ipod to my Mac, it showed up on the desktop but not in iTunes. The ipod window said Do not Disconnect. I waited a few minutes, then chose Eject iPod. I restarted the mac, reconnected iPod using a different FireWire port. The iPod no longer appeared on the desktop, and the Do Not Disconnect warning was still there. I switched to USB connection. No go. I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions on my HD and restarted.
I've been downloading a lot of podcasts lately, don't know if that's the cause of this problem. I'm using iTunes 7.1.1 and Mac OS 10.4.9.
I found a solution for this problem in Archives, but it's dated 12/05, and I'm wondering if it still applies. Part of the solution says to run disk utility, select the ipod, then select Format. But I don't see Format as a choice on version 10.5.6 of Disk Utility. Maybe what was Format in 2005 is now called something else? Like maybe Partition? Here's the post (by john madson) from 2005:

One more thing: I reset my iPod (toggled Hold, etc.). It appeared in iTunes but not on the desktop, with the message "If your experiencing problems with your iPod, you can restore its original settings by clicking restore." Which I did. Got a window asking if I wanted iTunes to check for a new software update. I said yes. Got an exclamation-point msg "There was a problem downloading iPod software. • Blank CD-R doesn't appear on desktop/ burning impossible

Whenever I put a CD-R into the drive, iTunes starts, and everything looks ready to burn. However, the blank CD doesn't appear on the desktop. Also, I don't get the "what would you like to do with this CD-R" message. I have never burned many CDs, but I have burned a few in the past without this problem arising. I have tried reseting the computer to no avail. It doesn't just spit the CD out (like other people seem to have trouble with). It just will not burn. This is frustrating... anyone help?

    Hi MagooVU,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
What company makes the CD-R? You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #88275 on Troubleshooting the slot load disc drive (Portables) and Knowledge Base Document #25402 on Factors that affect writing to or reading from optical media.

  • External HD doesn't appear on desktop sometimes

Sometimes my external HD doesn't appear on my desktop (connected with Firewire).
It spins up, and all I generally have to do is turn it off and turn it back on again for it to appear.
But obviously I wish it would just work the first time.
Using 10.6.1 on a Mac Pro, external drive is OWC Mercury.

Re: the link I think all the cables are fine, like I said all I have to do is turn the drive off and back on again and it will work.
    DU doesn't find any errors.
By reformat by you mean wiping the drive clean and reinstalling the system and then all my data? Sounds like a lot of work for what might just be a smaller problem (hopefully), I'd like to solve this but it's not worth it to me to do that much quite frankly (combined with the fact that I think 10.6.1 has some gremlins in it, so I'm not sure the problem wouldn't come back anyway).

  • How to eject a dvd that is stuck and doesn't appear on desktop?

I did insert a dvd a few days ago and now it doesn't appear anywhere and I can not eject it. But when I turn on the computer the disc drive makes strange sounds. How can I eject it?

Disc drive making noises is not good. Even standard media rejection tricks such as holding down the mouse button which restarting the computer might not cause it to eject if the drive is mechanically malfunctioning.  You may have to look into getting the drive replaced and have whoever does it try to rescue to disc.

  • Ipod nano doesn't appear in my itune library???

my friend recent purchase ipod nano and wanted me to sync some songs from my computer!!! the problem is that when i connect the the ipod nano into my computer, it doesnt appear in my itunes! but when i connect my ipod 80g it does!!??? so can someone please help me!

Once again the same recommendation I have give for several users, go to windows update or microsoft update http://update.microsoft.com and download the latest service pack (SP 2) for windows xp, also check to have the latest itunes version, you may need to fully unistall previous versions of itunes before, may be your dad's computer have the service pack installed, you can check on right-clicking on My PC icon on the Star menu, go to propeties and if the shown window says Microsoft Windows XP Version bla bla bla, Service Pack 1 or 2 then your system is ready for itunes + ipod, if not, that may be the problem. Upgrade then!. Also try to connect to an other usb port that has high voltage, some hubs or keyboard connections don't have it, you may need to connect it directly to the usb port on the rear of the pc. Hope it helps.

  • Nano won't appear in Windows or iTunes...this is getting ridiculous...help!

I've had my iPod for about 4 months.
It isn't appearing in iTunes or Windows.
I've tried the 5 R's, none of which worked.
When I try and use the iPod updater to restore my Nano it just says "Initializing..." and after a few seconds it says "Invalid iPod service version" and shuts down.
My computer operates really slowly when my iPod is connected.
When I try to disconnect it, it takes ages...only to tell me that my iPod can not be disconnected.
So I have no choice but to just pull it out of the USB port.
When my iPod is connected, it just freezes on the "do not disconnect" screen...which doesn't flash, the screen simply freezes.
So when I disconnect it, I have to restart the iPod just to use it.
Please help I've been scouring the support site trying to solve this myself, and sorry for bothering you all with this common question, this is just a last resort as NOTHING I have tried is working.
    Thanks.

  • CD won't eject, doesn't appear on desktop, or in restart ... how do I?

Cannot eject the CD/DVD that is currently in the drive. It does not appear on the desktop, and when I restart the PowerBook pressing C it doesn't boot from it. The Media eject button doesn't display the eject hologram when I press it, and restarting pressing the trackpad hasn't work. Opening up the DVD player displays the message 'A Valid DVD Drive could not be found (-70012). My PowerBook doesn't have the manual eject button to press with a paperclip.
So that's everything I've tried, as well as searching on these forums but the questions aren't as specific. If anyone can suggest something I'd be grateful.

    Hi,
Apple Knowledge base lists the follwoing:
    The drive doesn't eject discs
If the drive ejects discs slowly or appears to be struggling, insert and eject a disc several times.
If the drive does not eject discs, press the F12 key or, on original PowerBook G4 computers, the manual eject button located on the side of the slot. Holding down the trackpad button during startup should also eject a disc.
If the disc still does not eject, update the optical drive's firmware. This step may not be needed for all computers.
Reset the parameter RAM (PRAM) and/or the Power Manager (PMU.)
If the disc still does not eject, contact Apple to arrange for service.

  • Ipod nano (6th gen), appears under devices in itunes and all songs play properly. Upon ejecting from PC, ipod says 0 songs but still 14gb/14.88 have been used up. What is the problem here?

Pretty much what I asked in the question. Plugged the ipod back into the PC and it still works fine under Devices in itunes and all the songs re-appear here again. Havent been syncing with any different computers

  • Ipod Nano won't mount on desktop or itunes

I am having problems with my new iPod nano.
It will not mount on my iBook or mini. I have tried it on a windows XP machine also which didn't work.
I have tried to do the combo update of OS 10.3.9 and re installed the ipod drivers and itunes ... this didn't work either.
I have tried to call apple tech support but was on hold for one hour before giving up and trying to resolve the issue myself.
I found in the system log the following message:
    Sep 19 21:20:35 localhost kernel: disk1s2: I/O error.
    Sep 19 21:20:35 localhost diskarbitrationd[91]: unable to repair /dev/disk1s2 (status code 0x00000008).
I think this indicates a hardware problem with the nano because I have identified that disk1s2 is the ipod nano by looking under usb on the system profiler.
Has anyone got any ideas before I call apple and ask them to replace the iPod ??
    Cheers
    mrbolly

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
An I/O error could be a hardware problem or it could be caused by a bad file directory on the iPod (a software issue then). So, your System Profiler can see the iPod is connected? Have you installed the software that came with the iPod nano on your Mac and then tried to restore your iPod to the factory settings? This will erase it (and in the process erase any file directory errors). On your Mac, it will be reformatted as a Mac-only drive. If you need to share it with your Windows computer, then you should restore it on the Windows computer as the Mac can read the Windows formatting but Windows can't read the Mac formatting. When you VERY first plugged the iPod nano into your Mac (if that was the first computer ever), you would have seen a message saying "optimizing for Mac OS X". This is the system reformatting your iPod for the Mac. So, it's not a surprise the Windows PC wouldn't see the iPod if you plugged it into the Mac first... Let us know if you have trouble using the iPod updater to restore your iPod nano. If you do, that would probably indicate it's time to call AppleCare Support.

  • CD doesn't appear on desktop, can't eject from drive

    Hi All,
I just got my new iMac today, love it! But when I inserted a CD into the drive, it won't appear on the desktop, and I can't eject it. I've tried these things:
    -Restarting
-Restarting after pulling the power plug for 20 seconds
-Restart while holding down the mouse button
-Restart while pressing down the command-option-F-O keys
-Opening Disk Utility and selecting File > Eject (it's dimmed)
These are suggestions I found from other Discussion posts. Do you have any other suggestions? The last suggestion I read was to take it to the Apple store, I hope I don't have to do that.
From the number of posts I've seen on this problem, it seems to be common!
    Thanks,
    Lizzy

  • Can't get GUI to appear on desktop from iTunes or Quicktime

I was running a Mirrored Door 867 dual with 10.39 and PT 6.41. I had QT 7.1 and itunes 7 and they would run but not display on the desktop. I'd go to force quit and there they would be running but not showing on the screen. I thought it was just my system so I opted to replace it.
I bought another G4 with dual 1.42 gigs and a gig of ram. It had 10.37 on it so I upgraded to 10.39 and installed the same versions of itunes and QT. They ran perfectly and showed up on the screen just fine.
Then I installed PT6.41 and all the plugs keyed on an ilok.
Now it's just like the first computer. When I try to run either QT or itunes they never show up on the desktop. They are running but no GUI. And now in the "Force Quit" window they are in red letters and say "not responding." I have to force quit them, but can never use them because they don't show up on the screen.
If I want to play an MP3 on the computer, I have to open Toast, place it in the Toast window and from there I can play it on the Mac.
This is driving me crazy especially since I got a whole new system with new OS software. Why it's behaving exactly the same way must have somoething to do with Pro Tools since it's the common thread.
Can anyone help or suggest something I might try. These are pretty basic utilities for me and I need to be able to use them.
I tried to get help on the Apple quicktime users board of nothing turned up.
    Thanks!

I guess I could have also told from the remainder of your post, but for some reason, it just didn't click in my head
Since the problem seems to happen with Pro Tools installed, I'm not sure if the problem is theirs because it's their software or Apple's because perhaps something in QuickTime isn't working the way it was previously in some way the developer didn't expect.
Either way, definitely send feedback (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/feedback/). Maybe someone else who's working with this will post to the thread.
