Nano from Mac to Pc

I bought a nanpod for my brother who is a pc user, I understan d I can format the nanopod with a pc and load him music from my mac, but not the other way around. Is it this correct?
Thank you so much for helping.

That's correct. An iPod formatted for Mac won't run natively on a PC because the Windows OS does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive. You can format your iPod on Windows if you want to use it on both platforms as Macs can read Windows formatting. I've seen ocassional posts on the forum where there have been problems but these would be the exception.

  • Trouble switching my Nano from Mac to PC

Hi all. I've had my Nano for months, it worked fine, connected to my home PC.
Then I get my new Macbook (great laptop!) and decide to reformat it as a Macintosh Nano. Which is fine, and all is well, except then I realize that instead of transferring ym vast mp3 collection to my laptop, it would work better if I continue to use my PC with it's huge hard drives as the 'home' computer for my iPod.
Ok, here's the problem: After reformatting my Nano for Windows, I can still add songs to it using iTunes. But when I disconnect my iPod from the PC, the Nano's screen says this:
    "Use iTunes to restore"
Anyone know what I can do to get my iPod back? It's totally unusable right now.
    Please help!

Well, I answered my own question.
I had to install the latest iTunes on my PC.
Then I had to format my Nano for PC.
Then I had to install the lastest iPod drivers/update
After that, I by chance discovered an open window saying my iPod software is damaged, and I need to 'restore' it, which I did.
Then, after restarting my PC, all was well. I can use my Nano again. Joy!

  • Switching Nano from Mac to PC

I have been using my Nano on a Mac and want to start using it exclusively on a PC. Will my PC "see" the Nano so that I can perform a "restore" and convert it to Windows format?
    iMac G4 Widescreen   Mac OS X (10.3)

Yes. When you plug your iPod into the PC it will prompt you to restore it so it can be used on a PC. It will need to be restored because PCs cannot read a Mac formatted iPod.

  • Switching 3Gen Nano from Mac to Windows

OK, I know what you're thinking, so let's not go there.
In the meantime, I've purchased a nano in Japan for use with a Mac which I purchased at the same time. For a variety of reasons, I've returned to using a Windows machine. Don't ask.
Now, I'd like to sync my nano to Windows. I've done all the Right Stuff, including a downloading the latest version of iTunes and restoring the Nano.
Regrettably, the little bugger simply runs and runs, with a message that says "do not disconnect". The restore doesn't seem to have taken, I can't load anything to it, it doesn't appear to charge fully. I've left it to run overnight, and when I return the next am, the nano is still (apparently) charging.
So in a nutshell, I had a Mac-based Nano which I tried to convert to Windows using the steps on the site -- 1. download the latest version of Windows iTunes 2. use the restore feature to ah, "restore" your Nano to the software on you PC.
Except it's not working that way.
Any help you can give is appreciated.

All righty. I've checked and the iPod is using the FAT32 format. But still, every time I plug it into the PC, it runs with the message "do not connect". It'll run like this for hours -- even overnight. When I do shut the PC down and disconnect the iPod, I get the "Please restore" message in several languages. But iTunes doesn't restore it.
I've uninstalled iTunes and will reinstall it and try again, but to date, this is a very expensive device that I can't even use as a doorstop. Hmmm. I'll keep working on it. If you think of anything else to try, please do let me know.

  • How to reformat nano to mac

i received a corporate nano with preloaded "discussions". anyway, step by step how do i reformat the nano from windows to mac?

Connect the iPod to the Mac and restore it in iTunes. Restoring will erase and reformat the iPod's hard drive, reload the software with the Mac version and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions to name the iPod and automatically sync your songs and videos onto the fresh installation. Press Done and the iPod will appear in iTunes and start to sync. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists uncheck the box beside the sync automatically instruction and press Done, it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • From MAC to windows

Hi, I just loaded all of my songs onto my new iPod using my Mac Powerbook. I also loaded all of the same playlists onto my wife's new iPod Nano from my Powerbook. She doesn't use Mac, she uses Windows. Now, she wants to add songs to her Nano from her own computer. She has loaded the iTunes software, and after connecting the Nano, it tells her that the Nano needs to be reformatted and that she can't keep all of the loaded playlists. Is this true? Or is there a way around this so that she doesn't lose all the songs already on her Nano?
    Thanks in advance
    Robert Grossman

    Robert,
If the Nano was formatted for the Mac then Windows won't recognise it so it will have to be reformatted. You can use a Windows formatted iPod on the Mac, see this article to confirm the format of your Nano: iPod: How to determine your iPod's disk format
    From the iPod FAQ:
Question: Can I use an iPod formatted for Mac on a PC, or an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac?
Answer: It is not possible to use an iPod formatted for Mac with Windows. This is because Windows does not support the HFS Plus file system and therefore will not see the drive.
If you no longer have the tracks that are on the Nano in iTunes on your PowerBook then you could use Senuti to retrieve them and then update after reformatting: Senuti

  • Switching from Mac to Windows with no CD

Yes, I too fell in love at first sight with the nano, and will be giving my mini to my boyfriend (who got it for me in the first place). He uses PCs and Windows.
I did a search on reformatting the mini from Mac to Windows but all the answers seemed to involve installing the iPod for Windows software. I don't seem to have this anymore, and Apple helpfully doesn't provide it for download.
Sooo...how is my boyfriend to reformat my mini for PC? Will just plugging it into a machine loaded with iTunes for Windows do it?
Sorry if this is an often asked question; maybe what I should be asking is where or whether I can get the iPod for Windows software. Will whatever is provided with the nano work for the mini on a PC?

Download the latest version of iTunes and the iPod software updater onto the PC. Install iTunes, then the iPod software updater. Then run the iPod software updater, connect the mini when told, and choose to restore.

  • How do i un-register my nano from the computers it is registered to if i no longer have access to those computers?

How do I un-register my nano from the computers it was registered to when I no longer have access to those computers?

Yes. Launch iTunes. Select the songs that are not working (command click on a mac, control click on Windows), or select all of them. Then click the advanced menu on the top, (if you are on windows, it may be called something else) and click make iPod version or click make mp3 version. It should be fixed:

  • Storing files on the nano from a different computer.

My nano is set to be used as 'disk use'. So does that mean I can store files onto my nano from other computers and open it up on another computer. And by files I dont necessarily mean music, but even documents. If so, is it limited to certain computers like windows xp.

    D.S.
Yes, you can use it like an external hard drive. I
believe that it will show up on all computers, but
the files may not work. The reason being, your iPod
is formatted as FAT-32 where as a Macintosh iPod is
HFS+ (Mac Extended). My girlfriend can't purchase
music on her computer, so I buy it on my computer and
put it in her iPod. I am not a fan of her music so
its fine with me, she can add those files to her
library. You might want to look at Knowledge Base Document #61131. Since it is
a Nano you don't really need to worry; for future
reference, one can't transfer more then 4Gb because
    of the FAT-32 format.
    Jon
I think that answers my question but you confused me with:
The reason being, your iPod is formatted as FAT-32 where as a Macintosh iPod is HFS+ (Mac Extended).
Are you saying my computer as in a windows pc or a mac b/c Im on windows. I just wanted to know if i could store extra files on my ipod. And if so, would they affect my existing music files or not.

Try a software e.g. Xplay2, which allow your PC to read your Mac formatted iPod. However, the following is my suggestion:-
    1. Make sure all your songs are still with your Mac.
    2. Follow Stealth01's suggestion, do a Restore on a PC
    3. Your PC formatted iPod will now be able to be read by both PC and Mac
    4. Do an update of your iPod with your Mac
    5. Once it has been completed, use a 3rd party software e.g. YamiPod

The SMTP server you are using with Wi-Fi would be the outgoing server of your internet service provider... this is likely why that's working.
SMTP servers specific to a ISP would not work on the 3G network. You would probably need another SMTP server. One from your cell provider?
