Nano Gets Recognized by iTunes - Once

The leapfrog of hand-me-downs ended up with my son getting my wife's Nano. It hadn't been used in a while, but the "trick" that's being done is that iTunes (current) recognizes the Nano when it's plugged in, updates it, but once an update takes place iTunes is willing to talk to the Nano, but the Nano no longer appears to be willing to make a connection. It sits at its main menu and does nothing until it puts itself to sleep.
I've updated the Nano to the current 1.3 (which had to be done from another machine, since I couldn't get through the second connection after the plugging in did an update), done a restore, done a couple reboots, etc. Nothing has changed the behavior. Plug the Nano in, do something as innoccuous as change the name of the owner in iTunes (which kicks off another full update!), and contact is never established with the Nano.
Thanks.

Thats the smae thing thats wrong with mine, except I have Windows XP

  • I have an ipod classic 120gb. Its not getting recognized by itunes.

I have an ipod classic 120gb. Its not getting recognized by itunes and i am unable to format it even though it says i must if i want it to appear on itunes. It does'nt work on any computer so its not the usb. ive reset it a few times but no luck. Any ideas?
Here is some of the info i got, im not sure however what they represent.
    Retracts: 534
    Reallocs: 216
    Pending Sector: 62
    PowerOn: 1253
    Smart/Stop: 469
    Temp:Current 27c
    Temp:Min 5c
    Temp:Max 56c

If Windows or Mac can recognise it, then reformat it using a Hardisk Partition tool, if not, it is time to replace the Hardisk.
The High Pending Number, indicates some bad cluster, which Hardisk firmware can't reallocate or remapped. This maybe due to, leaving the iPod in a Hot environment, damaging the Hardisk.

  • 6th gen ipod nano not recognized by itunes on my PC (Windows 7). tried everything to fix, but still not working... please help

I have a 6th gen ipod nano that is not recognized by itunes on my PC (Windows 7). I get an error that it 'could not be identified properly'. I have tried all tips on the apple site to correct the problem, including unistalling and reinstalling itunes twice. Nothing works. Has anyone tried something that worked that is not part of the Apple support page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3218)? Thank you in advance for any help!

Then it's time to call Apple tech support while you are still under warranty.  Every iPod comes with complimentary, single-incident telephone technical support within 90 days of your iPod purchase.   If you also purchased AppleCare, then your warranty is extended for technical support and hardware coverage for two years from the original purchase date of your iPod.

  • Problem with 3rd Gen Ipod Nano being recognized by Itunes

I have a third generation Ipod Nano that was only used once. It takes a full charge and appears to be working fine. Problem is when I plug it into a computer it is not recognized by Itunes. The computer recognizes it but not Itunes. I have tried it on several computers and same situation. I have tried other Ipods and they are recognized by Itunes. I have reset it and reloaded Itunes with no change. Any suggestions?

If none of the solutions found in the PDF user manual and from DIY websites like iFixit and YouTube's How To tutorials work then it's time to take your iPod Nano to your local Apple Store or an AASP.

  • Xmas Nano not recognized by iTunes and ejecting crashes iMac HARD!

I hooked up my new 8Gb Nano and was notified I had to upgrade iTunes. Did that. Then a dialog box popped up telling me the Nano was not recognized and advising to disconnect and reconnect it. After doing this a half dozen times it was finally recognized. Tried to sync with iTunes and it froze on selection #19. Had to FORCE QUIT iTunes. As the Nano was telling me it is connected and needs to be ejected I did that in FINDER and the iMac had a hard crash. Had to force a power-down. I went through this absurdity 5 times with iTunes starting a sync at #19 then after deleting #19, it froze at selection #11, deleted that and it froze at #1. After each freeze and my tying to eject the Nano and getting 5 hard crashes I finally went to bed!
Today I trashed iTunes, downloaded it again and hooked up nano. Nothing. It was not recognized by iTunes but showed up in FINDER and the DESKTOP. Quit iTunes. I ignored ejecting it, disconnected it. Started iTunes again connected the Nano and got the spinning color wheel for about ten minutes. While I searched the net for solutions it finally stopped spinning but, the Nano is not listed in iTunes! It shows up on the desktop and in finder and the Nano is telling me it is connected and needs to be ejected. I'll try to eject it next but I'm sending this now as I've no confidence the mac won't have another hard crash!
This is pretty disappointing. I finally talked my brother in-law into abandoning the PC (as I did last year after a zillion years of PC frustration) and consider getting a new iMac. "All you have to do is hook up your Mac and it just works!!!" From what I'm seeing here and other places, the Nano/iTunes problem is not unusual, BUT I'm seeing nothing from Apple to address this issue. Is Apple becoming the next Microsoft? Who needs this crap?
Does there have to be a mass return of Nano's to get Apple's attention? I know mine goes back tomorrow!

  • IPod Nano not recognized in iTunes but as hd in windows

So after running all the so called fixes on this article:
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
We are still not able to get this thing recognized by iTunes. My wife's 4g mini works fine, as well as my 80g 5g. I'm just thinking that this is a hardware issue. My buddy at an unnamed large chain retailer has had 12 of the 2nd gen Nanos come back to his store in the last week for the same issue Will not sync up in windows). Apple needs to get on the ball and get this fixed. My wife is ready to return it and wait for the Zune to come out, but i convinced her to wait to see what we get here.

just turn on terminal services like in:

  • Ipods fail to get recognized by itunes but appear in my computer - already tried different solutions

    Hello,
i have iPod nano 6th generation 8GB and while it is recognized in My computer it isn't recognized in iTunes. When i plug the device on my mac it recognizes it and synces properly.
When i first plugged my nano on my PC it said it can't be recognized or something like that (i didn't do printscreen on that one) so i proceeded and after i saw itunes downloading software i though this woudl take couple of minutes so i left the PC.
when i came back i couldn't see it anywhere in itunes but i was able to see it in my computer like removable device (only with the nano icon) and i was able to see it in device manager.
I have tried the "iPod troubleshooting assistant" and tried this:
iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes >> http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363
    both without having any success.
i wasn't able to complete 6. "Change your iPod's drive letter" as all of the options weren't available to click on.
also i tried plugging my older iPod clasic that i use it very rarely since i started using my nano and same thing happened! first it said your device can't be detected please restore or something like that (i forgot to make a screenchot again, i know, so stupid).
after that it didn't appeared in itunes and had all they sypmtoms the nano had but i tried doing the restore on my mac and it went great and synced data also but when i plug it back on my PC it was the same old story...
my library is much bigger on my PC and i would like to sync my data from there as i don't want to keep a lot of stuff on my mac's SSD. all things point this is a PC issue (as expected) but i would like to fix things instead of doing a clean win 7 install as i have a lot of supplementary software i need to reinstall.
any help is appreciated in advance.
    thanks. mile

    Hello Coobyj,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
It sounds like something may have disabled the Apple Mobile Device Service, so I would check that next.
This article should help with that:

  • IPod Nano not recognized in iTunes, desktop, iPod reset

I went to update my iPod Nano's music selection and found it isn't showing up in iTunes. I reinstalled iTunes, restarted the computer, reset the Nano and still nothing. It does not show up in Disk Utility but does show up in Apple Disk Profiler. When I try the iPod updater, it says "waiting for the iPod to be ready". My 30 GB iPod works just fine, immediately recognized by iTunes. As soon as I connect the iPod Nano to the computer, it goes to "Do not Disconnect", darkens, and stays there. It does charge. How can I reformat the Nano if iTunes or iPod updater doesn't see/recognize it?

A couple of pages later in the forum, I saw something about disk mode. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
I tried that out and my Nano did mount. I then was able to restore the Nano to factory settings, after which time everything worked ok.

  • Why is my iPod Nano not recognized in iTunes but charges?

I have a Mac Book Pro and an original iPod Nano. I have old music on my Nano that I want to put on my comp, I have a program for that. But the thing is that even though when I plug in my Nano, it lights up and charges but it isn't recognized in iTunes. How can I fix this? Oh and my screen is broken so I can't reset anything from my iPod itself without like step by step direction because the click sound still works and I guess I can figure out what to do if you say like one click down or 2 clicks down... THANKS!!

Otherwise, take the computer & iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • My iPad 1 is stuck at the boot logo. And it does not get recognized by iTunes. What do I do?

I have had this iPad for a long time, it has never done this before. It then suddenly out of nowhere decided to restart and it has been stuck in the bootlogo since. Yes I have tried putting it in DFU mode, but iTunes won't recognize it. What happened, and how can I fix it?

    Did you try this?
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
If that doesn't work, start here.
