Nano in file sharing mode?

Loving my new 6th gen nano, especially thinking I could use it as a USB memory stick for home/work sharing.
I've set it up on my mac and all seems great, however when I plug it in to a windows (yeuch) machine it wants to re format it first? this means I cant use it across both platforms as a memory stick? anyone else know different?

Hello Sickofpcs,
If you want to use the iPod on both platforms, you'll need to format it is as a Windows iPod (FAT32 file system type). PCs cannot read Mac formatted volumes.

  • Time Machine needs file sharing mode

I have a Time Capsule (1rst Gen 2008, 500 Go) 56GB left, connected through Ethernet.
I just rebuilt the index but i still find odd it needs 4 mn to backup 10MB every hour
    I have strange errors
mds[78]: ERROR: _MDSChannelInitForAFP: AFPSendSpotLightRPC failed -1
    and
mds[78]: (Error) Volume: Could not find requested backup type:2 for volume
    also,
    1) i need to enable file-sharing (with airport utiliy), or Time Machine won't start
    2) the name of the disk is incorrectly spelled in Time Machine preferences (with a "-1" at the end, as if there were two disks with the same name. There are not)
    3) Time Machine seems to be using afp for the backup
com.apple.backupd[3242]: Attempting to mount network destination URL: afp://MyDisk
i wonder if there is a problem in the way Time Machine is configured
    Any ideas ?

  • File sharing using accounts: private shares on main TC drive only

Is there a way to use "accounts" file sharing mode and allow users to have private sections of USB drive(s)? When I attach USB drives in "accounts" mode, it creates a "shared" folder on the file system, and all files placed there by any users are read/writable by all other users. The only place a user can keep private files is on the onboard drive. This is not good! Any workaround? Did I miss a trick?

    CLARIFICATION:
    Hi!
I've TC 1 TB, latest model (Early 2009 in Apple terms I suppose).
Can I have private folders in EXTERNAL USB drive for accounts?
I've created two user accounts via Airport Utility->Disks->Secure Shared Disks: With accounts.
User account 1 sees three kind of Sharepoints via Time Capsule's entry under Shared-category in Finder:
    - external USB drive in whole (bad bad)
    - entry for main level so internal disk inside TC
    - dedicated account directory for this user account (let's say: account1) in TC's internal drive
    User account 2 sees:
    - external USB drive in whole (bad bad)
    - entry for main level so internal disk inside TC
    - dedicated account directory for this user account (let's say: account2) in TC's internal drive
If wanted scenario isn't possible in TC, how about Airport Extreme, can disks be controlled there separately?
Summa summarum: I'm trying to have poor man's fileserver in my home network. Target is to have common place for users' files (while maintaining privacy), so external USB drive for this purpose. TC's internal drive dedicated for Time Machine backups only.

  • Target Mode with multiple partitions??? Also file sharing

I am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my older G4 using a firewire cable. My G4 has 2 hard drives, and one is divided in to 2 partitions. When I restart my G4 in target mode only the drive that is my start-up disk shows up.
Is there any way around this?
I've thought about just connecting my computers through file sharing but it only lets me share files in my public drive. Is there a way to share all of my files?
    Thanks,
    Justin

    Emailing you now...
Lets say the Username on Machine#1 is jk1, Username on Machine #2 is jk2, and is an admin on #2...
Then from Machine#1 use Go>Network, type in the name of Machine #2, (use the actual IP if the name can't find it), it should come up with the Dialog box with jk1 filled in for the name and asking for the password... but you have to change the name to jk2, (the one with permissions on Machine #2 to see everything), then type in the password of jk2.
The only thing I can see why this wouldn't work for you is if Machine #1 can't find #2, or Permissions need Fixing on #2.

  • Unable to generate SQL trace file in shared mode ??

    Hello,
I have a 10.2.0.1.0 database on Win2003 server 64 bits, with several instances.
On instances in dedicated mode, I can create trace files by using dbms_system.set_sql_trace_in_session, but on instances in shared mode nothing happens : no file is created in the udump directory.
This doesn't make any sense to me o_O
The shared parameters are the following :
    dispatchers=(protocol=TCP)
    shared_servers=1
I've checked all the necessary parameters to create a trace file (user_dump_dest, timed_statistics, max_dump_file_size...) and everything is fine.
I really don't understand why I can't create trace files when the instance is in shared mdoe...
Can anyone help about this weird issue ?
    thank you !
    regards,
    Antoine

Remember also that in Shared Server mode the trace information is not written to a single file but is written to the Shared Server trace file. Before Oracle 10g there was no way to pull all the trace information for a single user session together out of the trace files. There is a tool for doing so with 10g.

    Hi fremley,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This article may be helpful with determining why your Mac Pro doesn't stay in sleep mode:
Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1776
Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)
    Input devices (see below)

  • XP pro file sharing and guest password - how to enable guest password?

    Hi,
I want to share files between two Windows XP pro computers. I would also like that these shares can only be accessed with a password.
Here's a description of my setup:
I have two laptops: over 1 yo Fujitsu-Siemens (FS) running on Windows XP pro (finnish) and a brand new Thinkpad T61 (TP) running on Windows XP pro (english). Both of theses computers have guest account enabled and these accounts have also been password protected. FS's guest account is called "vieras" because of the language settings and TP's guest account is of course just "guest". Guest account passwords have been enabled using "net user <user name> *".
I've disabled simple file sharing on both computers, set shared folder permission to only contain these users: TP - "Guest (TP\Guest)" and FS - "Vieras (FS\Vieras)". Both computers have F-secure on them so I've made firewall rules which enable following services both ways to a specific IP: Ping / ICMP echo request and reply ; Windows file sharing and network printers ; Windows network browsing ; ICMP / Internet Control Message Protocol. I've also enabled these services on Windows firewall.
These computers can connect to each other either via Wi-Fi access point (b-mode) or directly using an ad-hoc Wi-Fi configuration (g-mode). Obviously the latter is used for more bandwidth hungry file transfers. Also, sometimes a cross-over Ethernet cable is used as well for even faster file transfers.
Everything on my setup works just fine except just one thing. I connect to a shared resource by running the computer's IP address. When I connect from TP to FS it prompts for username and password. FS accepts both english and finnish names for  the guest account provided that the password is correct. But here's the problem... When connecting from FS to TP _no password or username prompt appears_. If I browse TP's shared folder sessions (under My Computer -> manage) I can see that FS is logged on as "vieras" i.e. FS's guest account.
Since I enabled FS's network shares over a year a go I can't remember everything I did to make it work. Every relevant configuration on TP and FS seem to be identical (e.g. "Security settings -> local policies -> security options -> Accounts: limit local account use of blank passwords to console logon only -> enabled") but still TP accepts connections without password prompt.
I've tried to get TP's password prompts enabled for a while now without any success. I did a lot of searching on the subject but I could only find instructions on how to disable guest account password prompts for network shares.
Has anyone had similar experiences or does anyone know what I should try out next? Thanks...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Success!
I solved my problem by changing guest account passwords. I tried to keep things simple by using the same guest password on both computers. This however allowed FS to log on to TP without guest password for some unknown reason. My logic would tell me that having the same guest password would allow both computers to log in without password but this wasn't obviously the case. I guess Windows has its own logic that I can't figure out or this issue had something to do with different language setups. Anyhow my shares work now like I want them to work.

  • File Sharing was working but now isn't

    Hey folks -
Some time ago I had quite a sruggle getting my MacBook Pro visible to my home network. I found this threa - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6198136 - and blew out the files and reset things and poof - there it was. For the rest of that day, and a few other times later in the week, I had no problem accessing the Mac from other computers and seending files happily back and forth.
Since then (February 08), I know that there have been a number of updates that I have allowed on the system. I have also just installed VMware Fusion to run and use Win XP while in the OS X environment.
I just discovered that while my other computers can see my MacBook - they can only see the printers share - and even there I don't see the actual printers, just the folder (but both printers are checked for sharing).
I have tried blowing things away again as in the link above and restarting, but no dice. I have unshared and reshared - but still no dice.
Under the Sharing / File Sharing / Advanced option I have made sure that the box for "Share files and folders using SMB" is checked. The default box for "Share files and folders using AFP" I have tried both checked and unchecked - this is the only Mac on the system - All other computers are Win XP systems, save for the server which is a CentOS 5 system. I can see the other computers in my network from the MacBook and I can connect to the shared folders on them - so I know I have local network access, but not the other way round.
I also have no idea how or why the Printer Share folder is showing up, but contains no actual printers. In VMware Fusion when I bring up XP Pro and try to install my networked HP 2300D by visiting it's URL, the ever so helpful IE tells me that it won't install the Active X component - so I thought I would just use the Printer share - and that's how I discoverd that the folder is there, but nothing is in it. Sure enough, the other systems in my network can see the MacBook, and they get a folder for the Printers - but nothing is in there.
Back in February this was working (file share and printer share) - no idea what changed or when it changed, but it is frustrating.
I have read through a number of other postings but none seem directly on point to this issue, so I have not found any solutions that have worked.
Hoping that someone can offer a suggestion that will work.

the same thing is with me too. me and my brother both have 2GB nanos, i got mine just after christmas. It kept doing this weird symboling thing, i couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. so, i took it back - to best buy. they gave me a new one. now i have this second one and it has been working fine until one day i asked my mom to plug it in and charge it for me. it still had about 1 red bar left. about 2 or 3 hours later, i went to unplugged it [safely unplugged it] and it had all my BROHTERS music updated on it [i always uncheck his songs first so they dont go on it, they WERE unchecked on itunes! i dont know how they got on!!!] so then i look, and it didnt even charge at all. it still had the same amount of energy. my brother rarely updates his ipod, just charges it. but, he did update it earlier that day, and since then...i cant CHARGE my ipod, i cant update it, nothing works. now i just tried plugging it in to charge, and it was on hold, so i slid the button so that it wouldnt be. There is still a little lock on the top left corner, like it shows when its locked. EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT LOCKED! it wont let me do anything. ive been trying to figure it out for HOURS, ive followed the 5 steps and NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK i need help so badly.

  • Mac to Mac file sharing not working for new folders

My folks got a new iMac today, and I've got a 2007 iMac on the same network. We're both running 10.8.2.
I had a few folders set up to share files. My public folder, Movies, and then a new fold called "Mom" that I set up specifically for them. The settings are identical on all the folders, but they can only access "Movies." If I try to access any other shared folders from their machine, I get the following error:
"The operation cannot be completed because the original item for "[insert folder name]" cannot be found."
I have read the Mac 101: File Sharing document (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549?viewlocale=en_US) and followed the directions to no avail. I have removed and re-added all the folders, and still, only "Movies" is readable from their iMac (it too was removed and re-added). The settings for all the folders are identical to the settings for "Movies."
Additionally, after a short period any new folder I create and use as a shared folder will no longer allow me to rename it, even after I remove it from the shared folders list. The folders are not locked, and I have full admin privileges.
(Things work fine the other way, though: I can set up shared folders on their new iMac and access them just fine from my 2007 iMac.)

    hi there,
that error message sounds like you placed a shared folder within a parent folder that is not shared. It also can help to boot into Recovery Mode (pressing Command and R simultanously when hearing the startup tune), launch Disk Utility, select the disk containing your OSX installation (usually named Macintosh HD) and choose Verify Disk Permissions. Should any problems be reported select Repair Disk Permissions. Once that is finished, reboot normally.
Though unlikely, it might have happened during all the folder removing and readding that some Permissions are out of sync. So checking these Permissions is merely a precaution
Once you are back in "normal" OSX using your admin account, try this:
Open Terminal from the Utilites folder
enter the following commands one line at a time:
    mkdir /Users/Shared/Family
    mkdir /Users/Shared/Family/Movies
    mkdir /Users/Shared/Family/Mom
    chown -R <placeholder> /Users/Shared/Family
    chmod -R 755 /Users/Shared/Family
Be sure to replace <placeholder> with your account's short name (no brackets!)
Now open System Preferences and select Sharing
Select File Sharing from the left pane
Click on the little plus and add /Users/Shared/Family to your shares (The subfolders are automatically included)
in the right most pane check the access privileges. They are set, so that you can read and write to those folders, while everyone else can only read. If you want everybody to have read and write privileges, use 777 instead of 755 within the terminal last command.
Now the other computers should be able to see and use the shared folder you just created.
If you create individual user accounts on your machine for every family member you want to access the shared folders, you can choose far more sophisticated levels of access privileges.
    Hope this helps,
    Chris

  • My Mac got hacked. I was working on a word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how the hacker is skillful. At the that time I was on a password protected wifi and file sharing was off.

This is the first time I get hacked this bad. I was working on a microsoft word document when the computer suddenly started typing meaningful sentences on its own that describes how skillfull the hacker is. At the that time I was on a friends wifi network that is password protected (not sure about the encyrption), the Os X Firewall was on. I was using the admin profile, however, file sharing was off. I'm very careful not to install any suspecious 3rd party software.
So far I have verified permissions and fixed some errors there, and changed passwords.
Do I have to erase/format my computer and reinstall the Os? If so is it adequte to use the internet recovery tool or will it use old and possibly infected EFI/Root files?
Would appreciate the advice of all the Mac experts out there. Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting. A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Personal file sharing, ok to leave on please?

    hey guys!
just wanted to check what some other mac users do re personal file sharing!
i have an imac G5 and a macbook (intel core 2 duo) and i turned on file sharing for both systems, firewall is on and it works great!
both the question is, is says other mac users can access my files, when i access them i input a password so others will be asked the same right?
firewall is on stealth mode so this should be safe, right?

Mine is on all the time and, like you I have two machines, so one thing I use it for is to transfer data.
To get into the second machine needs username and password and if you are behind a firewall and a router, there is very low possibility for them to see your Macs. On the same system, perhaps they can be seen, but getting in needs those passwords and usernames.
Make sure your passwords are strong, of course.

  • Personal File sharing doesn't work

I'm trying to transfer files from my G4 to my G5.
    I've been successful until now.
All of a sudden my G4 will not allow me to enable Personal File Sharing.
I click the "Start now" button, and nothing.
I have also been having start-up and sleep problems as well as mouse cursor disappearing after sleep mode. Could they all be related?

I'm using a Network cable on the G4.
    Airport card on the G5.
    Aftermarket wireless G router.
As I said it worked fine just hours before. Now won't network at all.
I'm using an Apple USB mouse.
G4 will sometimes just freeze after chime and screen will not come up, or comes up very slowly. Mouse will often disappear after waking from sleep mode. Or sometimes it will not wake from sleep. I've removed all peripherals except Apple monitor and mouse.

  • Personal file sharing won't complete 'starting up' phase

i'm trying to network my Power Mac G5 to my iBook G4...
everything seems fine on my G5: the Sharing preferences went smoothly, and i can access my iBook from it. (they're both connected via ethernet to my DSL router)
but when i try to set the Sharing preferences on my iBook, for both the Personal File Sharing and Personal Web Sharing services, when i click 'on' box they just sit there, grey, in 'Starting Up' mode and never actually turn on.
i ran a Disk Repair Permissions to no avail.
i have no idea what to do next...
    thanks for any help,
    ct
    PowerPC G5 dual 2Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    I'd Trash these files...
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Users/nnnnLibrary/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
    then get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, boot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.

  • Bug? Folders created by transmission is read-only to Windows file sharing

It's a nice thing that transmission is supported in the LenovoEMC version of firmware. The thing is, folders created by this transmission are read-only, which means file can't be added, deleted nor modified from Windows file sharing (They are still be deleted with transmission though, but that's irrelavant).
From my experience, this issue is caused by the value of unmask not properly set up in the settings.json file. This file can be modified when transmission is not running, but I didn't find a way to stop transmission from running / restart itself even after being killed from SSH.
    Please help.

You have to have root access (which will void your warranty) to modify settings.json, that's why I wish Lenovo can come up with an official solution.
If you don't mind viod the warranty, then after you stop transmission, you can log in as root via putty, then use nano to modify settings.json as mentioned below:

  • Difference between File Sharing, Dropbox, and Public Folder?

I have this MBP out front & my Mac Mini in back. I'm comparatively new to networking, altho I've used File Sharing (FS) & Dropbox (Db). It seems now, there are a myriad of ways to sync my two computers. (ICloud is also used, just for Mail & iCal, since those are the only two I have that Apple allows on iCloud. I have the computers networked w/ an Airport Extreme. That all works flawlessly.)
I'm aware of Apple's Drop Box, but it doesn't work since the two computers are over 30' apart.
The three subject features all do the same thing, I believe, so along with this question, I'm asking which of the 3 is preferable. Dropbox confuses me because it refers to the Public Folder, when it seems only necessary to drag a file to the Db folder, rather than the Public Folder. Anyone know where the Public Folder fits into the Db scheme of things? Or even into the FS scheme of things? Or even into the total file sharing/snycing landscape? My hunch is to ignore the Public Folder.
As to File Sharing, if I opt for this, then I don't need Db or the Public Folder. Right? The problem w/ FS is that both machines need to be up & running (and not in a Sleep mode). Also, FS is irrelevant when it comes to the Web. On top of all this, most apps come w/ the capability to upload files, photos, etc., for the Web. I'm in a situation where I need to keep track of what I'm sharing, whether it be through FS, Dropbox, or the Public Folder.
I would really like to simplify my workflow by settling on just one means of syncing my two computers. I'm aware that Db is good for sharing files not only between my 2 Macs, but putting stuff on the Web.
How do some of you share data between computers? What do you go with? All 3, 2, or just one? How do you keep things straight?

I'm aware of Apple's Drop Box...
    You mean AirDrop.
The three subject features all do the same thing, I believe...
    No, they're entirely different.
File Sharing is a file service that works over a local network.
Dropbox, which I've never used, is a cloud-based storage and file-synchronization service.
The Public Folder is the subfolder of your home folder that's accessible to other users of the same computer, and also to other users on the network if File Sharing is active. (The term "Public Folder" may have another meaning in the context of Dropbox.)
How do some of you share data between computers?
There are many ways to do that, in addition to the ones you mentioned. It's not really clear what your requirements are.
