Nano "iPod service error" cured...?

I had to set up a Nano for a client, and he was having the same issues everyone else has been having (service errors, not recognized in iTunes, etc.) Here's what I did to get it to work (after 3 hours of troubleshooting)(by the way, this was posted in another forum, thanks goes to James Bond 007):
1. Uninstalled iTunes 5
2. Uninstalled QuickTime 7
3. Copy the iTunes Library file in My Documents->My Music->iTunes->Previous iTunes Libraries->iTunes 4 Music Library.itl to My Documents->My Music->iTunes, renaming the file "iTunes Library.itl". This sets up your iTunes library for the reinstall of iTunes 4.9.
4. Uninstall iPod Updater 2005-09-06.
-Reboot-
After reboot, instert the CD that came with the Nano, and follow the instructions.
I knew I was in good shape when the installer asked if I wanted to connect the iPod, or continue without connecting. I chose NOT to connect it, just in case any issues happened when reconnecting it to the PC.
After the install, I rebooted, and nrevously connected the Nano. After about 10 seconds, iTunes loaded and it was working!!!!!!
So... I think the issue here is with iTunes 5.0, and NOT the 2005-09-06 updater, since that was installed too.
HEAR THAT APPLE???????? PLEASE GIVE US A PATCH TO iTUNES!!!!
I hope this will help others.
Ken

I have had the same trouble... the Itunes was NOT reading my Ipod, and would get service error in my updater... could not figure it out for 2 weeks.. called Apple support 2 times... 3 hours of on the phone support in total and STILL they couldn't figure out the problem. NOW I see this post and THANKS TO YOU, IT HELPED ME! My iTunes FINALLY read my Ipod. I don't know what to say except THANK YOU!! Im in awe right now.
But now what about the LATEST iTunes and updater, would it work or not? Im afraid to try. You are right.. Apple NEEDS to come up with a patch for this and SOON!
THANKS AGAIN!!

  • IPod Service Error with iPod installer 2006-06-28

I previously had a Mini but lost it (stolen). I bought a Nano to replace it but could never get it to work. I returned this and purchased a new 30g iPod. Same issues. I get the error message "iPod Service Error" when I open the 2006-06-28 iPod Software Updater. I even get this message whether I have my iPod connected or not. In iTunes, I get the message "The software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod's software."
Well, I've reinstalled iTunes countless times and reinstalled the updater a equal number of times with no luck. I tried all the steps (including links) in:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
I also used msconfig with no luck. I disabled my Norton internet security and antivirus software with no success. I disabled the Fast User Switching and followed someone's advice regarding FAT32, but again no luck.
I tried to read through all the latest discussions and articles I could find, but am now getting confused. Is there anyone out there who has been able to tackle this problem? My alternative is returning my iPod and giving up on iTunes. Help me please!! Thanks.

Thanks for your response and sorry for the delay. I've been traveling. Yes, I did try making another XP user account and got the same results. I have not tried the installer cleanup. What do I do with this utility? I read the instructions from MS, but not sure if I should just highlight the iTunes, iPod, and QuickTime stuff on my PC. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • HELP! iPod Service Error on Updater

I've already tried everything, including kznano's infamous set of instructions. But when I get to the iPod updater part, it shows "iPod service error", which means I can't restore my iPod nano. By the way, every time I reinstall the updaters, it says "Unable to delete iPod Service" Don't know if that will help, but thanks in advance.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Have you tried this?:
Eject your iPod from computer (for now).
    Close Updater and iTunes programs.
    Restart the computer.
Put your iPod into disk mode.
Connect your iPod to your computer again.
See if your Updater works for your iPod.
    Have you seen this article?

  • Won't show up on itunes or on ipod updater("ipod service error")

Every time i plug my ipod (4g w/ click wheel) it says on itunes software not installed correctly, it shows up as a drive but i can't see it on itunes, i have tried to reinstall itunes more than 5 times and nothing works. Also, when I try to restore my ipod with ipod updater i get an "ipod service error". I am going crazy here trying to figure this out, someone please help me!

Try this for can't mount iPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302538
You might also want to try putting your iPod in disk mode:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651
Sometimes this does the trick (iPod normally needs to be in disk mode in order for it to show up in Disk Management)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93499
If you're still unable to get your iPod to restore, you can try this:
Put the iPod into disk mode, according to the article above.
    Connect it to your computer.
    Click Start > Run
    Type compmgmt.msc
Click on Disk Management (in the left-hand column)
Let the computer go through its connection process
Right click on the iPod and click Format
    Set the format to FAT32
Leave all the other settings on their defaults
Do Not select the option to Quickformat
    Start the format.
It's recommended that you still try to restore the iPod after formatting, but it's not always necessary. This should get your iPod back into iTunes.

  • Updater ipod service error

we needed an update for our ipod video because it has an a folder with an exclamation mark. we followed the steps below that were found on www.apple.com/support
    Install the latest iPod Software.
After your download is finished, install the iPod Updater. Just launch the assistant and follow the on-screen instructions.
    Run the iPod Software
    Run the iPod Updater application
Connect your iPod to your computer and launch the iPod Updater. The iPod Updater will automatically determine if an update is required.
Once we plugged in the ipod and launched the updater it did not give us the option to restore the ipod it just said "ipod service error" and the only option was to click ok and still nothing is fixed, what do we do now?

  • Updater "ipod service error" and itunes "reinstall itunes"

I got my ipod exchanged just recently from a regular 20gb iPod to a color/photo ipod. I downloaded the newest iPod updater and the newest iTunes. I go into the updater program and a message comes up saying "iPod Service error". When i plugged in my unit to my computer, iTunes shows a message "the software required for communicating with the iPod is not installed correctly. Please reinstall iTunes to install the iPod software.
Here's the problem. I went to Apple's online help and went through all the possible solutions it had (reinstall iTunes, Disable conflicting system services and startup items, disable conflicting system services and startup items and reinstall, resintall the COM interface for the iPod service) and none of them worked.
What do i do? because I've spent the whole week trying to figure out what's going on. I've repeatedly uninstalled and reinstalled both the updater and iTunes. Anyone have any answer to this?

It might be a total pain, but you might do best if you call Apple Support if you can... Hopefully you didn't get a bad 'Pod.

  • IPod Service Error (I posted on the wrong board last time)

Okay, I see a lot of people are having similar problems but mine seems to be very hard to fix and I'm very very frustrated. I've had my iPod mini since late March, so it's not that old.
First, I cannot update my iPod with new songs. It says there is no iPod connected. It only charges when I plug it in directly or on the dock. Second, I have iTunes 5.0, just so you know. Third, I cannot update my iPod software. When I try to use the latest iPod updater (and even my old one), the screen freezes, and then says "iPod Service Error". Can anybody help me? I've tried everything and am really upset. Thank you!

    hiya!
I won't get a chance to try it until I get home tonight.
okay, i'd better give you some more references now then.
if you run into problems with the registry keys, with any luck some of the ideas in the ProgMan thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2143821#2143821
    ... or the hutch thread:

might be of some help with that.

  • "iPod Service Error" plus other issues

Hi, I hope someone can help me.
My iPod is severely malfunctioning. Sometimes, when I turn it on, the screen pops up with a folder and exclamation point. Sometimes it pops up saying "Connect to iTunes to restore". And sometimes it works fine.
I am trying to connect it to iTunes to restore it, and I just installed the newest iTunes but iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod. Windows might or might not recognize the iPod. It recognizes something, but instead of naming that something as the name of my iPod as it usually does, the computer calls it "Removable Disk G". And when I try to update the iPod or restore it with the iPod Updater, a "iPod Service Error" pops up.
I have also noticed that instead of a color "Do not Disconnect" flashing sign on my connected iPod, I have a black-and-white and small Do Not Disconnect sign.
What do I do? Help! Thanks

    ive tried everything.
I did every step on that document that tells you how to fix it, i restarted, turned off all system services (other than MS ones), but nothing will work, i keep getting ipod service error.
    I've removed/reinstalled itunes/ipod about 20 times, did a system restore, but nothing.
When I plug ipod in it says do not disconnect and that wont change either. I'm really stuck
Is there anything else i could try???
    I just dont understand.
    Thanks

nope, still no luck, i turned off the service, restarted, same thing.
What could possibly be wrong, it worked before!!
all i did was upgrade to the new itunes, downloaded the new updater and now nothing will run right

  • Updated reporting Ipod Service Error

My itunes stopped recognising my ipod. Even though it said Do not disconect on the ipod itself. So i went through the support pages and found that i needed updated. I downloaded this but this will not run. It simply says Ipod service error and an OK button.
    I have tried both updater 2005-09-23 & 2004-11-15

let's try the following two documents:
iPod for Windows: Fast user switching in Windows XP is not supported
iPod shows up in Windows but not in iTunes

  • Please Help.  Cannot Install Itunes 8.0.1..."Ipod Service" Error.

Can someone please help. I cannot update to Itunes 8.0.1. Ever since I first tried it has given me the "iPod Service" Error. Now it won't let me update my iPhone either. I have tried rebooting my PC and still no luck. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

Below are the instructions to clean up iTunes installer from the apple website. It worked great for me at first. Now all the songs have ! next to them. Ugh. Any ideas?
Clean up iTunes installer files on the computer
You can download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility from Microsoft, which will clean up any leftover installer files that may be causing issues with your current installation. To do this:
Click here first, and read the important information about the software.
Click the "Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package now" link on that page to download a file titled msicuu2.exe.
Open the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install it.
On the Start menu, point to All Programs and then click Windows Install Cleanup; the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
Select iTunes from the list and click Remove.
Click OK in the confirmation dialog that appears.
Repeat steps 5 and 6 if you have multiple iTunes entries listed.
Select QuickTime from the list and click Remove.
Click OK in the confirmation dialog that appears.
Repeat steps 8 and 9 if you have multiple QuickTime entries listed.
    Click Exit.
    Restart the computer.
Install the latest version of iTunes from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download.

  • I get that stupid ipod service error

you no that stupid ipod service error that you get when itunes is messed up and your ipod dosent update your songs well I got that

The following is taken from a thread a few lines down. This technique worked for me.
It was originally posted by Phrehnck:
The recent iTunes update seems to have left many users iTunes installation from correctly detecting and synchronizing with their iPods. This problem seems to occur when the iPodService files are not updated when iTunes is updated to version 5.
    Steps to resolve the problem:
    1) Click "Start" | "Run..." | type in "net stop ipodservice"
    | click "OK"
    2) Delete the folder "C:\Program Files\iPod\bin"
    3) Run the iTunesSetup.exe installer. It will probably prompt you to either "Repair" or "Remove" iTunes. Choose "Repair" and click on next or finish.
    Optional Step 4) Click "Start" | "Run..." | type in "C:\progra~1\iPod\bin\ipodservice.exe /service"
    | click "OK"
    Optional Step 5) Restart Computer
If these steps do no resolve the problem, please dont flame me=X
This is not a problem with Windows XP but with the iTunes installer=)

  • Help with iPod service error

    Greetings,
I had an issue where my Nano's battery got very low to the point that it was not recognized by my computer. I borrowed an AC charger and got it to charge and work fine but still not be recognized by my computer. I followed the instructions for downloading the HP USB formatter and when I tried to restore using updater 6/28 I get a service error and cannot restore. I tried turning off the fast switch option (which waas on in the past when the computer used to see the ipod in itunes) and then I tried removing itunes and reinstalling it and I get the same error message. It seems to me that the helper files that look for the ipod are missing. The iPod will respond to being reset and the computer recognizes it, but I cannot restore it. Is there a way to restore it without using the latest updater? Any help greatly appreciated.

the ipod-service/software-required error messages are typically caused by snarlups on the PC side of things.
the theory behind the registry entries version of this is a little sketchy. i've only encountered about ... ten at the outside? ... confirmed cases of this since Christmas. possibly it's associated with not running installations as an administrator, possibly with running the installs inside a different user account than itunes has already been installed in, possibly with security software interfering with registry changes during the install process.
if you do run into troubles with key editing, ProgMan and hutch's threads might be of some help:

  • New 5. version and Ipod Service Error

I downloaded the newest version of itunes and updater 9-23-05, and now my ipod won't sync with my windows xp itunes. I have reinstalled both itunes and ipod updater, I have deleted everything in the temp file, I have disabled all programs, and I have tried to restort (I get a service error when I try to restore). Apple support tells me my ipod is not under warranty. What they needed to tell me is that their crap software wasn't under warranty and doesn't work.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this problem? Is it possible to go back to a working version of the software if I can't restore?
