Nano needs restore, but invisible to iTunes!

I have a nano that needs to be restored, but apparently the only way to restore it is through iTunes. Unfortunately, the nano is not recognized by iTunes, but it does show up on Windows as a removable drive. Catch-22! What do I do?
All the troubleshooting articles on apple.com are from the point-of-view that there's something wrong with the computer, but my other nano is recognized by iTunes and works just fine. There really needs to be a way to restore right from the nano menu, otherwise I have to send it back to China for service.

With your iPod first disconnected from your computer, have you tried forcing your iPod into disk mode? For instructions, see this Knowledge Base article:
Putting iPod into disk mode
With the iPod in disk mode, try connecting it to your computer. See if you can get it recognized in iTunes for a restore, by connecting it in disk mode.
Can you get your iPod recognized in iTunes, or not?
If not, then you might want to try finding a Mac computer, and restore your iPod through iTunes on there, since it just might be recongized better on a Mac.
You can always go to an Apple Store, if one is near you, or to some place else, like CompUSA, that should have Mac computers on display.

  • Iphone 3gs in recovery; needs restore; but gets error code

    I have a new 3gs Iphone.
    I installed the newest version of ITUNES- 9.something.
    I start the SETUP IPHONE PROCESS.
    I am told that I need to upgrade to new Iphone OS.
    It takes 2 hours to download.
    I get an error
    I try to reconnect the iphone - GET MESSAGE that the phone is in recovery and needs to be restored.
    I start restore - i get an error. I start again. It shows all the green bars as completed but then freezes. I restart the computer.
    ITUNES tells me again that Iphone is in recovery and needs restore.
    I start restore. I get a message: The Iphone could not be restored. An unknown error occured (14).
    I don't know what to do.

    I have had this same problem, and you'll find out it will eventually work, but then after that your phone wont even start up and wont be able to connect to your computer! it's only allowing me to make Emergency Calls
    This new update has really peeved me, i need my phone for work.
    Try another computer, updating itunes, or different ports, restarting computer. Only thing i can think of sorry.

    I have an 80 gb classic and it said one day (after being fully charged) that it needed to be restored. So I plug it in and Itunes won't recognize it and windows shows it as a removeable disk but there's no info there either. I have the latest version of Itunes and have tried everything. I plugged my wifes 80 gb in and it syncs fine. I'm just hoping I don't have to get a new one. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks.

  • 1GB Nano, attempting restore but it fails

    As a result of an ill-advised attempt to load a song from my daughter's Mac (we bought Nano's on the same day), my Nano would no longer sync with my Windows machine. Yes, we now know that this isn't supported. Anyway... after spending some time fighting with it, I decided to just restore it to factory defaults, After all, I've only had it a few days, and I can always reload the Nano.
    I downloaded the latest updater (6-28-2006), and began the process, but it hung up for quite a while. After looking for some information, decided to try to restart the update process. I reset the Nano, rebooted my Win2K machine. Only now the Nano won't even come up with a color screen. When I plug it in, I get the "do not disconnect" line, and the flashing symbol, but it's black on white. Also, in the upper left, I get the rotating arrows that used to appear on Macs when they were searching for a metwork connection. A battery symbol appears in the upper right.
    If I reset the Nano without it being plugged in I get the folder with the exclamation mark on it. Visiting Apple's support site simply tells me to run the updater... which is whay I'm trying to do!
    As a final effort, I just tried to reset the Nano again, and launch the updater, separately. I figured once the updater was running I could plug in the Nano, but the updater gives me an error, saying:
    iPod Updater 2006-06-28 cannot continue because there are other applications using the iPod. Please close all iPod applications and try again.
    The Nano isn't even plugged in at this point, and iTunes isn't running.

    Got it into Disk Mode. Screen's still black and white, but we get the big check-mark and the words OK to disconnect. Those words are replaced with the "do not disconnect" screen the second we plug it into the workstation, and all fails as it has before.

    second restore on the PC afterwards, but the Mac
    restore will fix the problem
    Unknown. The Mac is a computer provided by my daughter's school, and we do not have the ability to install software on it (no root access), including the latest updater.
    I have neither the time nor the patience to spend more effort on this, so I'm heading back to the store to see if they will replace it.

  • Nano, Mini works, but Classic crashes Itunes?

    Itunes 11 works with my old nano and an old mini.  That really suprised me.  It didn't erase anything and updates my Itunes library from both Ipods and downloaded the new content I had purchased. Wow!  Never expected that.  The Ipad no longer appears under a device heading, but in the Ipod main menu is all the transfer control options super!!  Works on checked items as well as a complete  transfer in both directions.  Super!!
    However it crashes when I try to access my Ipad Classic.  That was rather expensive and has my main music library.  After relocating the new 2013 version 11 ITL library to a backup folder,  I moved the 2010 ITL library into the main Itunes Library. I then re-installed the previous version. The installation worked.  Unfortuantly, no Icloud.  And when I tried to access my Classic Ipod, Itunes did not crash!!  However, it would not let me continue until I installed the new version.  After installing 11 again,  Itunes crashed again when I accessed the Ipod Classic.
    Want to buy an expensive Itunes classic on sale?

  • Phone needs restoring, but how do I transfer important files before?

    iTunes cannot recognize my phone and says that it needs to be restored. The problem is that I have important  iTalk recordings on my phone that will be erased if I restore it (I think). The files are too big to be emailed/dropboxed to my computer. Is there any way I can get them on my computer if my phone does not show up on iTunes??

    When I plug it in, it usually says Jennifer's iPhone and all of my data (apps/music/contents of the phone show up). When I plug it in now, it says Jennifer's iPhone for a few seconds, then a message pops up that iTunes cannot recognize the phone, and the phone becomes "iPhone" instead of "Jennifer's iPhone." The only "iPhone" options are restore, and summary screen. No other tabs are available to peruse.
    I am trying to sync with the computer that I ususally sync with. Itunes understands that there is a phone plugged in, but my phone cannot communicate with itunes......

    Hello - I connected my iPhone earlier since a pop-up message showed up saying that I needed to back up my information in iCloud, once I connected it to my iTunes, it was taking more than 2 hours to complete, I decided to disconnected in the middle of the process, and I was not able to use it anymore, and it only displays: Use iTunes to restore.  I connected it again, but it does not do anything.  Another message comes up in the iTunes screen saying that in order to use the iPhone in iTunes it needs to be restored.  That is not my intention, but it does not let me do anything else.  Does anybody know what to do please?

  • Upgrade to iOS4, now needs Restored but wont let me restore! (Err 21?)

    I hope someone can help as the Apple line is closed and I am travelling with my 7 week old son to Ireland tomorrow and at present have no phone!
    I started to Sync my iPhone 3GS as usual and was asked to update to iOS4. No problem. Downloaded then iTunes started to do its thing with my iPhone. A few mins later an error message arrived that a duplicate file existed.
    Tried to sync again but this time it would only let me press Restore. In my summary page on iTunes all note of my serial number, phone number etc were coming up as N/A.
    On pressing restore, it tries extracting software, verifying with Apple, prepares ihone to restore then says:
    The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An unknown error ocurred(21).
    From here it just takes me to a link saying update itunes if necessary, restart pc etc. baasically your usual options which have not helped.
    I travel in 10 hours, cannot get to an Apple store before this and will have to fly without a phone to another country. Can anyone help with this problem? Many thanks

    Maybe try this. Check this thread or search with keyword "duplicate file" under iphone.

    After updating itunes to 9.2 I now get the message " The iPhone "iphone" cannot be synced. A duplicate file name was specified."
    WHY!!!!!?????!!!!?
    I am NOT running iToner so its not that! .
    I knew I should have not updated I get burned every time.

  • IPod nano on Desktop but not in iTunes

    My iPod Nano (the new one, short and stubby, just released) shows up on my desktop with 'Calendars,' 'Contacts,' and 'Notes' intact but it doesn't show up in my iTunes. Both the nano and the iTunes are new, plus I just upgraded to Tiger (yes, I know).
    I reset the **** thing about nine times. That doesn't solve the problem. Any suggestions?

    Solved! Another post on another thread mentioned that they closed eyeTunes and turned it back on. This did the trick for me, too. Thanks.

    Find your nearest apple service centre which you can find under the support link and give them a ring ,i did after my 80gb ipod went wrong all of a sudden after a month,they said bring it in we will try to fix it and if we cant we will get you a new one which they did and it took 2 days ,I had spent the previous 2 weeks trying various solutions from this forum untill it eventually fell into a continuous loop of "needs to be restored",warranty covers you for a year from purchase

  • Ipod says it needs restoring but restoring doesn't help.

    One day my ipod stopped and a message came up saying i needed to restore it on the computer. However when I did this, it just displayed the message again.
    By resetting the ipod and then pressing select and play when the logo shows, to put it into disk mode; I can upload music to the ipod again, however when i reset it to take it out of disk mode, it just displays the 'you must restore your ipod' message again.
    I also tried changing the drive letter of the ipod on the computer but this did nothing. pleeeeeeeaaaaasssseeeeeeee help people! my white ipod is my baby!

    I would suggest u not go for that, try restoring the ipod in Disk mode. I mean take the ipod in disk mode and then connect it to the computer and restore the ipod. This step most of the time it works. If in case if this doesn't work. Check with your warranty. If not i would say go for refurbished ones which you get in the apple site. they give it for a good price and with a year warranty .
