Nano nightmare!

Okay, my son is so frustrated. I can't even tell if the 7.0 is actually downloaded because I can't get the itunes to come up. I have 3 people on this computer and what I want to do is set up my son's page to hold his itunes library. I could'nt even get his old library or a cd to load onto his nano. On top of that, I followed the instructions and it kept taking me to this itunes things where i signed up for the 19.95 for one year(out of frustration- I didn't think I was supposed to subscribe to anything!) When I subscribed, it ended up charging me 34.95 and I'm not even sure what I paid for. I know that sounds wierd but it was directly from the itunes website. I have a username, password and confirmation # but I don't think that this was the right path to nano connection! Please help if you can. Thank you.

I'm sorry for your difficulties, but something kinda stands out to me as glaring. As far as I know, there are no subscription services in iTunes. I may be wrong, but you may have been misled.
As to the inability to load the Nano, there are two ways to load it. The easiest being; create a playlist in iTunes (File > New Playlist) then drag the songs you want from the right panel to the new playlist on the left you've created. Once you've filled it with the music you want (as long as it doesn't exceed the maximum memory of the nano), click on your Nano in the left panel. The right panel will change, at this point, select the Music tab. Click the Sync Music tab, a window will pop up, select Sync Music. Then, select the "Selected playlists" button, check mark the playlist you made, and finally click the Apply button in the lower right hand corner.
It should work.

  • IPod Nano nightmare with Win2K

I've been messing with an iPod Nano for two days now trying to get it to work on an older Compaq (200MB RAM, 750 MHz AMD, Win2K). I added on a USB 2.0 card specifically for the Nano.
I've had nothing but problems getting it to work smoothly. The problem is there are so many problems I can list them. Sometimes when I try to manually update the iPod, the system ejects the iPod then shows me a dialog: "New equipment has been successfully installed. System must be restarted, do you want to restart."
When I click No, disconnect the iPod and reconnect it, then I can sync it.
Still other times, I get variations on "File cannot be found," "Volume doesn't exist," or "This iPod is not properly formatted." When I try to restore using iPod updater, I get the message, "This updater does not support the iPod hardware you have connected." But it is the software I installed off the CD that came with the Nano.
When I plug it into a G5 iMac running Tiger, it works perfect.
    aaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hi Juile,
    Technical Specifications: iPod nano
    1. iTunes 4.9 and later must be installed.
    2. Windows system requirements
    * PC with USB port or card (USB 2.0 recommended)
    * Windows 2000 with Service Pack 4 or later, or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
One thing to note that you're Compaq probably does not support USB 2.0. You may want to check if you have Service Pack 4 or later installed.
If you setup your iPod nano first on Mac then the flash memory will be configured to support Mac not PC and visa versa. It would be nice if Apple would allow one common format so Man and PC could be used interchangeably.
In some of the older PC systems after installing the new software its always advisable to reboot. After rebooting if you review the Device Manager located under Control Panel --> System you can see if any of the device drivers are incorrectly installed. If so they will be indicated with a red X showing an error. If everything looks OK here then it might just be the USB interface. There may be some incompatibility running the AMD chipset versus Intel.
It’s difficult to tell from your description since I’m not sure if the warning/errors you’ve experienced are from the hardware or software (iTunes, iPod, etc…). It would be best to try to narrow these down. The volume problem to me sound like software issues.

  • Managing podcasts on nano nightmare

I uncheck episodes I'm not interested in on the podcast playlist, but they are still on the nano. Do I have to clear/delete them? What if I want to listen to them later? Is there a way to take them off the ipod but keep them on the podcast list?
My kids have shuffles and it is so easy to drag and drop on their ipod screen. The nano has the "grey" entries that cannot be managed without numerous visits to various playlists. Is there an easier way???
    Nano   Windows XP

Go to iTunes prefs -> iPod and select the Podcasts tab.
This is where you control what is loaded on your iPod.
Set it to Manually manage podcasts, then close the prefs.
In iTunes, click on Podcasts, right below library.
This is the podcasts on your computer.
Drag the ones you want to the iPod.
A blue dot in front of the filename means you have NOT listened to it.
To get them off the iPod, Click the triangle next to the iPod.
Click on Podcasts right under the iPod name. Select the podcasts you don’t want on the iPod and press Delete.

  • F*&^%N Ipod

My sister bought an ipod nano about a month ago. She tried to install itunes to no avail. Something about it trying to install to a drive that wasn't there. So I told to her to install vpod instead. It worked like a charm. Then yesterday she tells everytime she charges her ipod via usb it deletes all her songs. And not only that but she can't add any more songs even though she has 3.47gb of space!
So she bring me her ipod. I download the updater. 45mb on a dialup connection! Then I decide to update instead of restore. The updater just hangs there for about 20 minutes. Does it really take that long! I have a 2ghz cpu 512 ram, usb 2.0. Almost no processes running in the background! So I end the process. Disconnect with safely remove hardware, checked the ipod and noticed it was updated from 1.1 to 1.11 finally. Checked the About section in the ipod. And noticed there is only 3.33 mb of space! And that's with O songs loaded.
Ran the updater again to try to restore but nothing another 20 minutes of it just hanging. Killed the process and decided to try again. But nothing. Tried to access the drive through my computer it just crashed explorer.
Well anyways here's how I fixed it. I formatted the ipod. Went to Start>Settting>contro panel>Administrative tools>Computer Management>Storage>DIsk Management.
I right clicked on the ipod drive and selected format. In file system I selected Fat32. When it was done I rebooted my computer and ran the Ipod updater and selected restore. That's it.
Just letting off some steam. Why is the updater so big. Apple, people still have dialup connections if that's hard to beleive! Why not just make seperate updaters for each model. Why the **** do you have to register just to download it? How about a direct link? Oh yeah if you have time please visit the apple store.
Why is it so hard for you guys to make software that works properly in Windows? Coincidence? I think not.
Why do you need so much information just to post in your forums. Name, birthday, address, are you guys sending a birthday present?
Well thank's for reading my long rant. I hope my solution helps some poor windows user.

Dude, I tried your reformat solution and it worked awesome... thanks a million... you just ended a very long, painful ipod nano nightmare
Like everyone else, my ipod nano worked perfectly until I updated it... it hung up while updating, was not recognized by itunes, crashed explorer, slowed down my 1 year old dell system, and all with that maddening "do not disconnect" message flashing. I spent probably 5 hours doing system restore, tinkering with windows, downloading programs and doing (and re-doing) "the 5 r's". NOTHING. I even went so far as to exchange for a new nano from amazon thinking "it couldn't be apple's fault; they make flawless stuff!" SAME PROBLEM. What a nightmare. The technical articles were totally useless (i.e. re-installing ipod service, cleaning up files with the windows utility, etc)
What a terrible waste of time. I don't expect Apple to be perfect (definitely not anymore), but since so many people are having this SAME problem, you'd think they'd post a solution front and center! SO frustrating.
Anyway, thanks again my brother, you've earned definitely some good karma from your post! Now all I gotta do is re-install all the programs that were wiped out from my system restore...

  • I SERIOUSLY NEED HELP I CANT UPDATE MY iPOD NANO AND I JUST GOT IT!!!

I plug in my iPod rite, and then it starts to begin updating when this message comes up:
Songs on the iPod "Ma Nano" cannot be updated because all of the playlists selected for updating no longer exist.
What does that mean and how do i fix it????
    Help please.

I have a Nano that is locked up and seems to have some logic to the problems.
    I have tried the 5Rs
    I have formatted and restored
I have the latest version of the firmware and software
This thing is a $250.00 nightmare it is 5 months old and now it is a software piece of junk does anyone now of any person that can troubleshoot and repair this device (in a reasonable amount of time?)
There is no doubt that I can send it back to Apple under warranty and they will remove the software bug and charge me $100.00 (plus shipping and handling) to solve there problem.

  • Ipod nano or shuffle for gym?? Difference?

    Hey all.
I have a 60 gig ipod which I LOVE and use for travel and long trips. BUT i was just about to get a shuffle for the gym...as working out with the 60 gig can get in the way sometimes. Now that the Nano has come out though its a tough one. Which would you prefer and why? Can I randomly load songs on the nano like the shuffle? I don't need the full features of a regular ipod...so I don't know if the nano is overkill.

the mobiblu dah-1500i is not that cool. no way its cooler than a nano. maybe cooler than the shuffle.
after using a mobiblu for a couple of days here are some cons...
buttons really feel cheap and are not easy to use
screen is too short. titles scroll and that takes a long time to read
interface is pretty bad. song navigation is a nightmare. its like using windows file manager without a mouse
reading song titles while navigating is a pain.
sound quality is just awful. we compared it side by side with a shuffle, mini and regular ipod. sound level is substantially lower and flatter. need to use all the weird effects to make it sound decent.
thickness. the mobiblu volume is great. nice and small. instead of making it a cube, why not make it 3 times as long and 1/3 as thick?
proprietary cable to charge and connect. i ipod has the same problem i guess with the dock connector. but at least there are tons of people making that cable. lose your mobiblu connector and you are hosed.
so, interface lousy, sound quality lousy, too thick, buttons no good, not a real color display... yeah, its cooler than the nano. (sarcasm)

  • TS1363 Once again having trouble with my 6th gen nano not being recognized in ITunes on my Windows 8 computer

Can't decide if the nightmare called Windows 8 is the culprit.  I'm reinstalling ITunes (for the 2nd time on this PC) and re-downloading all of my music to my computer. Hopefully I can get the new songs I purchased to show up on my IPod.  If not, time to go back to my 1997 discman.

This came from another thread, but worked for me.  Problem is with newest iTunes 4.62 and Windows 8.1.  Unistall iTunes, as well as its helper programs (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Divice Support, and Apple Software Update).  Reboot, and reinstall iTunes.  It will reinstall all the other ones and you should be able to connect your nano.  Good luck.

  • Ipod nano and new laptop now cant see library

    Good evening all,
Purchased Ipod nano in march worked ok and could se all my songs on the itunes library got a new laptop downloaded the stuff. Now can't see any of my previous tunes paid for a tune this evening but not on my nano nor in my library nightmare
    help please

You can only transfer music and videos through iTunes. If computer/laptop music folders is what you mean of "existing library", then it would not be possible. Add your files first to iTunes then sync.

  • Nano -- Can't Get it Working on a New Computer

My wife's Nano worked fine on my old computer, but I got a new computer and it's been a nightmare. I set up the new computer, and set up a new Ipod, which works great. I then tried to get my wife's Nano working...Iinstalled the old software on the computer, I entered the serial number, and said yes when it asked whether I wanted to associate this ipod with this machine. For a few minutes, I saw my wife's nano appear in iTunes. But then it told me that my library was too big to put all the songs on the Nano...when I hit cancel (intending to go back and check certain songs), things went downhill.
Now, the Nano just flashes "Do Not Disconnect" over and over, but the computer never recognizes it...the Nano doesn't appear in iTunes anymore, so I can't eject it. I've tried resetting the nano, restoring the software, turning off the computer, pressing "menu" and select for 10 seconds, this just resets the nano briefly but then it goes back to flashing "Do Not Disconnect" again.
I'd sure appreciate some help if anyone has any suggestions. Thank you!!!!

Never mind, I pressed Menu and Select and held them for 10 seconds, and this reset somehow worked...the computer recognized the nano and began to synch properly

  • This thing is becoming a veritable nightmare to me, the MOM !!!!!

Hi there all of you expert pod users, as you can most likely tell, I am the mother of two very proud ipod nano first timers!!! Jolly ol' St. Nick was overly generous this year and had to bring two, which in essence to me, the MOM, means twice the nightmare, twice the problems, and twice the $$$$$$ for the extras involved, okay, now my problem--
When i installed the disk that came with it, everything went ok, surprisingly to myself, who is NOT computer savvy at all. OK, now when we got the itunes lists downloaded or whatever you call it, into the pods themselves, soon after the battery went quite low and we had to "recharge", alright, now there is a small symbol on the pod screen saying "do not disconnect".....our problem is when is it safe to disconnect this thing, and how do you do it properly??? I have read and read and re-read those instructions and have come up with nothing that resembles a symbol such as what they are telling me to find in my "source list" I actually just took the USB port out manually even though it still said "do not disconnect" What is the appropriate manner in which we should be doing this???--can someone please help me, my hair is already slightly graying and I really don't need it to become totally gray over an ipod----please please please help me
compaq presario   Windows XP   brand new computer, bought in August 05

    Hello Themomofthepodsowners,
The "Do Not Disconnect" and the symbol that you are seeing means that the song/photo files are being transferred or, it is connected to the computer and being charged. If you look in iTunes "Source" window and see the iPod icon flashing, that means that files are being transferred. Once it stops flashing, you can eject the iPod by pressing the eject next to the iPod icon.
For more information on battery status, take a look at this:

    -edit-
I should also mention that for first time use, charge the nano for at least 3 hours or more.
Oh... and since you have more than one nano, take a look at this:

  • My 6th gen nano won't let me put my correct height in.

I'm 5'2 and every other height works. It autocorrects to 5'1. I've tried to restore and update.

I am having the same problem (I am also 5'2") and it has been a nightmare. I was told to return the i-pod nano (which meant having to schedule an appointment and wait a long time for the store staff person to assist). Then when I tried to exchange it for the same color they were out. I received a different color (which I don't like as much) and it still has the same problem. Tech support had me delete and reinstall software several different times and then finally told me there was a fix in the works and it would be available in the next update. It has been months and nothing has happened. I would have rathered that the first time I contacted tech support they simply would have said there is a fix in the works (and don't hold your breath). I spent a lot of time running around trying to fix a problem that presumably Apple already knew about and is "working" on repairing.

  • Help needed please with zen nano p

Hi all I got a new zen nano plus last week and have had a nightmare ever since. I was told that it was very straight forward to use (just cut and paste from windows media player into a bubble!) and I liked the extra features it had over the ipod shuffle. However, I loaded on the software and it loaded on okay, but the media source player went all strange and started to play music at a super fast bitrate. I stupidly thought if I unistalled it and started again, the problem would be solved. It got worse, 5 hours later and after losing loads of music I resorted to a sytem recovery. today i have spent a similar amount of time trying to reinstall the mp3. the player downloads okay however when I put a cd into rip it tells me I have an error and won't play. i have noticed when I do install it it goe's from about 20% to 99% and seems to miss out the rest. My compuetr also dosn't seem to like the fact that the media source won't download properly. however I don't seem to be able to completly uninstall in the control panel . it tells me that setup has encountered a problem and needs to close. anyone got any ideas please - cause i am being dri'ven insane

I use the free version of Music Match(www.musicmatch.com) to get music from CDs to mp3s on my hard dri've. If you want to transfer protected wma files(those purchased one at a time, not subscription music. The player doesn't support subscription music) to the player then use Windows Media Player 0. To Transfer mp3 files to the player, use Windows Explorer(right click on start, then click on explore). Use Windows Explorer to set up folders on the player (File, new, folder) then use Windows Eplorer to drag and drop files to the folders on the player. For music quality almost indistinguishable from the CD use 256 kb
    ps.
That will give you around 9 hours of music on a gig player. If you want 8 hours of music but lower sound quality then use 28 kb
    ps.
96 kbps is between the two. I use 256 kbps for my music.

  • Help! nano not recognized by toshiba

Hello! I know that iPod connectivity with Toshiba laptops seems to be quite a problem here, and unfortunatelly, I have become the next victim of this frustrating issue.
Yesterday I got the iPod nano 1G, installed the latest iPod updater, the latest iTunes, but both of them do not recognize the iPod. I roamed through the discussions here, I tried the 5Rs, I tried HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool numerous times, turned the USB connections off and on, and so on and so on, but absolutely nothing will help. I think there's nothing I haven't tried yet, expect for THE solution...
Windows recognizes the iPod as a F:Removable Disk witrh nothing in it, you cannot format it. If you try formatting with the HP USB Tool, it will say "Device is protected" and if I try to change the drive name, it will not even show up in the Disk Manager.
I came until the point where iPod Updater tries to restore the iPod, but at the end it will say "Cannot mount".
It's a desaster! My iPod Shuffle was working perfectly with this rather new laptop. (I broke it, that's why I bought the nano) I expected to enjoy the nano in the same wyay, just plug and play, but this has become a nightmare since NOTHING seems to be working.
If anyone can help me please, I would regain my faith in apple again... thank you!
Toshiba dynabook   Windows XP   Japanese Laptop PC

    i solved the problem!!
even no one replied to this, i will describe shortly what i did, for every one who runs into the same problem!
the reason itunes could not recognize ipod was that the usb 2.0 drivers for my toshiba dynabook were outdated or just BAD.
so i looked for updates for my dynabook, updated everything i could find.
restarted the pc and boom! - itunes and ipod connect and you find me laughing on the floor.
so, i update your system, your usb drives and see if it works. it solved all the other problems i had with my usb connections before (like with my mouse and digital camera).
i described the same thing in this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=580625

  • Nano no longer recognizable by iTunes on either of my computers

This is a little different from other similar problems I've found here on the forums:
Until 2 days ago, my Nano was working fine (with iTunes 6.0.5 for XP). Then suddenly, iTunes stopped recognizing it. I tried resetting the Nano, same thing (and have read with amusement the suggestion to restore the iPod -- which of course requires its being recognized by iTunes!).
It shows up as a hard drive on "My Computer", so Windows sees it.
AND here's the kicker: This is true both on my desktop and my laptop, both of which worked fine a few days ago.
Any ideas? Or should I bring it into an Apple store?
